I've heard many good things about this restaurant so I decided to give it a try last weekend. It was surprisingly empty for a weekend afternoon. The space is beautiful: warm and welcoming, yet modern. Their brunch menu has several different options, some with a touch of Japanese fusion. I was intrigued! They also had a limited cocktail menu serving agave wine-based drinks. However, even though the space and menu piqued my interest, my experience left much to be desired. Since there are only three options for cocktails, I ordered a margarita. It was a straightforward drink. I had agave wine before, but this drink was a little weak. A $14 drink should not taste so watered down. The rim packed more of a punch than the actual drink. For food, I ordered their aguachile and tako (octopus) taco. The aguachile lacked flavor. The "agua" (marinade) was missing spice and sour notes. I don't know if this is how it's typically served here or if it was a bad batch, but I've had this dish many times before at other restaurants and there is so much depth of flavor and the marinade is usually less broth and a little more chunky from the blended ingredients. I will say that I at least liked the potato flautas that were mixed in. The octopus in the tako taco was cooked well. I enjoyed the texture. I would've enjoyed this more if it was just the octopus by itself. The menu listed a togarashi salsa macha. I didn't taste any of this on the taco. I love salsa macha and togarashi individually, so I was excited to try this fusion. Either the flavors were so subtle that they were not apparent or they forgot to add it. I hope (and assume) it's the latter because salsa macha has textural components that I would've noticed. Another miss on this was the tortilla. I love blue corn but my tortilla felt undercooked (and my friend's felt overcooked). I'm usually willing to give places a second shot, but after this restaurant was recommended by friends and oversold on social media, I'm unsure. It's possible they had an off-day in the kitchen and failed to cook things properly or add necessary ingredients. I know the server was new, but I don't know if the same applies to the kitchen staff. What a cozy and delicious meal! Came here for brunch on a Sunday. Everything was top tier from the latte to the french toast to the chilaquiles! Highly recommend both but if you're feeling something sweet go for the french toast and if you want savory go for the chilaquiles. The were perfectly crispy! Would absolutely recommend this place for a date, for a brunch with the girlies, you name it! There is a bar, some tables inside and two tables outside. I've been wanting to try this place out ever since it opened. I'm Mexican and I'm always searching for restaurants that have authentic flavors. As soon as I saw huitlacoche tacos on their menu, I knew I had to go. The inside was bigger than I expected with quite a few tables and plenty of bar seating. I ordered the chips and salsa which was a generous serving and included both green and red salsas, a jamaica, a huitlacoche taco and their tlayuda norteña (skirt steak with veggies). Loved the salsa, especially the spicier green one but both lacked salt. The huitlacoche taco was tasty. The skirt steak was okay. The meat wasn't very tender, the entire plate also lacked salt. The service was very attentive even though we were sitting outside, and we were consistently checked on. Interior: clean, pretty standard, nothing to write home about. I would opt for the outdoor seating since it has a much cuter vibe! (There are only 2 tables outside though FYI). I ordered the French Toast and the portion was gigantic. This is an odd little spot on Burbank Blvd. that has some odd hours. The menu, however, looked super interesting, so we made our way in for a Tuesday afternoon 'brunch.' The atmosphere is, honestly, a little weird. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I just never settled in. Service was good, but the layout meant he had to take long walks around the counter to get food, therefore things took a while. The food, however was very good to excellent. My wife got the chilaquiles with the barbacoa and I have to say, probably the best chilaquiles we've EVER had. Salsa Verde was delicious, as was the lamb barbacoa. SO freakin good! I tried three tacos; Huitlacoche, Spicy Tako Tacos (octopus), and the Chino Poblano (pork belly). All were super interesting and I enjoyed them. So, even though I just didn't love the whole vibe inside, the food was really good and I would go back. I usually don't order sweet coffee but this one was made perfectly. The menu is small but has delicious items on it. I ordered the chilaquiles and loved it, shared it with my family. My son got the tortitas de papa and said he will come back just for this. My husband's breakfast sandwich was ok, but my youngest son didn't like his steak sandwich. My son has an avocado allergy, so this was extremely dangerous and completely unacceptable. We asked to speak with the owner, but he refused to come out, saying he was too busy in the kitchen. Alongside that, there were a ton of flies flying around which I understand that it was a hot day and people were coming in and out of the restaurant but c'mon. They were flying amongst the food and our drinks. To their credit, the staff was kind and quickly offered to remake the dish, but the situation had already ruined the mood and my appetite. On top of that, the steak sandwich itself fell apart very easily, making it difficult to eat. If you zoom in the photo, you can very clearly see it. Service was also a bit frustrating. We had to flag down our server multiple times just to get napkins, and each time he only brought one when my hands were messy from the sandwich. I was hoping to find the next best neighborhood taqueria, instead I found something more. Like any hidden gem, Amor A Mi is not located where one would expect. It's not a trendy Magnolia Park eatery or in prime Downtown Burbank real estate...it's not even located in a strip mall like my other finds. Amor A Mi is located on the much quieter Burbank Boulevard, nestled next to a tiki bar, a nail salon, and a liquor store. With the trees in front and their sign blending in with the other businesses, you'd never know some of the best food in town is there. When you take your first steps in, it feels like you're transported to another place...far, far away from this commercial area of town. The earth tones, the tile work, and the wood tables are all perfectly lit with wicker bowl pendant lights and the natural light coming through the ceiling. There's vibrant plants and hints of green throughout that accent the walls, adorned with artifacts, artwork, and even some toys. It may look like any cafe you've been to, but it also feels like you've stepped into someone's home. That's also what makes the food so special here...at its core, yes, it's a Mexican cafe on the verge of fine dining, but it also feels like a home-cooked meal. Like a home cooked meal, there's not a lot of options, but that's a good thing...they definitely practice quality over quantity. My girlfriend and I came on a late Saturday morning in the mood for eggs and coffee. We ordered the chilaquiles with steak and their Mexican version of french toast I've seen all over social media. When the food came out, we knew before taking a bite that we'd love it. Visually the food was stunning. The french toast looked like a whole cake...covered in whipped cream and curd and fruit. The chilaquiles looked like something out of a photograph...the red sauce, the crema, sliced avocados, and a hint of pink from the perfectly cooked hanger steak. What made everything look even more stunning were the plates, carefully curated to match the dish. We were eating artwork on top of artwork. On first bite, I tried the steak and while it was good...it felt under-seasoned. I was slightly disappointed, but I wasn't going to be that guy and ask for salt at a restaurant. Then I took a bite of the well sauced chips and it became quickly clear that the steak just needed to taste like steak...the rest of the items would carry the flavors. Each bite was different...one was spicy, the other salty, another sweet, the next was tangy, sometimes it was all of the above. The avocado was perfectly ripe and creamy and the egg (ordered over easy) dripped yolk to make an even more delicious mess. It was a symphony of flavors and even though the notes were discordant at times, it still sounded delicious. The "Frenchicano toast" was just as yummy, but instead of just being a symphony of flavors, it was a symphony of textures. The crunch of the crust of the large slice of brioche. Then your knife easily slices through a completely soaked cloud of, something I had never heard of before, cebada curd. Apparently it's like horchata, but instead of rice, they use barley...which totally explains the very earthy flavors that tempers the sweetness. There's a passionfruit whipped cream on top that brings a tartness to everything. Instead of fresh fruit, they opt for freeze dried berries. At first we thought that was an odd choice, but when you bite through the moist brioche, the crunch of a freeze dried berry is such a satisfying contrast. Due to a weird timing error, we got our food first and our drinks much later in the meal. We had gotten a rose latte and what they called a Mexican matcha. It was one of the hottest days of the week, but we ordered them hot anyway. It was probably the wrong choice, but like the plates for the food, they were served in these wonderful, handmade mugs which made the experience that much more delightful. The rose latte was one of the better cups of coffee I've had. You could taste the floral notes, but it wasn't too strong...it was sweet, but you could taste the bitterness of the coffee which was perfectly roasted. I'm not the biggest matcha fan, but it tasted good. Mixed with spirulina, it gave some Star Wars milk vibes. The table next to us ordered theirs iced and it came in a tall highball glass so you could see all the streaks of milk throughout. Everything was delicious and we wished we could order more food, but we were stuffed. The waiter offered us some desert and that too had to wait until next time. Then he brought out the check...which came in a tiny tortilla press! They give you the option to pay the check on your phone, so we did and we left, transported back to cement and asphalt tones of Burbank Boulevard. I'm cranky after these chilaquiles. Crispy chips. Salsa with heat but no flavor. One measly little egg. A fork but no knife in my roll-up so I couldn't break into the hard barbacoa or the crispy chips. The menu said this dish had beans somewhere. These alleged beans were no where to be found. The tinga taco we tried was better. A bit more flavor to the sauce and meat but I was already so over the whole experience. Also, in case you're searching on Yelp for this information, this is one of those modern Mexican restaurants that does NOT do chips and salsa for the table when you sit down. read more
