Parking is a bit scarce at this location, especially around lunch time. I parked around the corner in a 1 hour spot, luckily didn't get a ticket because I think I went a little over. I had a very pleasant experience with my work friend out front on the Don Cuco patio. Our server was very attentive and constantly checked on us, offering refills of my Coke, and so on. I was super happy with my chicken flautas, which came with rice and black beans (by choice). The flautas were lightly fried and not over-done. The chicken inside was very tender and fresh, and came with yummy guacamole and sour cream for dipping for an added bonus. The rice was also soft and fresh tasting, while the black beans were hearty and not overly runny like some places. This is my old school location when I used to work in the building behind and lived in the neighborhood, but I don't get to this particular location often anymore. Still has the same charm to it, the salsa and chips are always super tasty and I can never figure out exactly what I want to eat because I always want four or five different things on any given evening, but easily always settle on something and always happy with the quality and flavor, not to mention being completely stuffed once I'm finished. The look, the color, the lighting of this place is straight out of a 90's Quentin Tarantino movie... and I was here for it! I believe this is the original Don Cuco's location, built in 1969! This location offers a small outdoor patio, bar area dining, and small dining room in the back. We sat in the back and immediately got served chips and salsa, yes! I ordered Chile relleno and cheese enchilada combo, which came with rice and beans. This was a huge plate of food and I liked everything, but it was a little bland. The plate was missing some flavor. Not in spice, but lack of salt and maybe some cumin? My kids really enjoyed their rice and beans and my wife did like her sopes, but also said they were lacking in flavor. Great first time at Don Cuco! Attended with a group of co-workers for dinner and it was the perfect spot for a casual meal. We came on Monday during peak dinner time and were seated immediately despite it being busy. We ordered the Mexican Pizza for the table and I was pleasantly surprised by how tasty it was! It would definitely recommend it - it was my favorite thing we ordered. It's basically a loaded open faced quesadilla topped with beans, chorizo, olives, guacamole, and sour cream. Super tasty and easy to cut apart to share! For my entree I ordered a Taco & Enchilada combo plate which also came with beans, rice, and soup. The quality has gone down over the years. The only thing that has remained consistent is their salsa and alcoholic drinks. My mother is a huge fan so I have no choice but to come here for family celebrations. I used to love the chicken fajitas. Overall I enjoyed this place . Me and my boyfriend were looking to grab a bite to eat after the Superman experience and one of the worker there recommended this place . When we arrived we got sat right away and immediately after we had water chips and salsa brought to our table . The chips and salsa was delicious and the salsa had the perfect amount of spice . For drinks I got the skinny margarita it was just okay it tasted kind of watery to be honest and didn't have much flavor . Food 4/5 This is classic "California Mexican" - it's not street food. But it's really good. I get the fajitas and they are fresh and plentiful. The soups are usually really good too! I have worked near to this place and always wanted to try it but never got the chance. Now that I was in the area prior to a movie I said fuck it let me check it out finally. So I dont know what the parking situation is here but it pretty much non existent unless theres something in the rear. I got luck and snagged some street parking in the front. Upon entering the decor is old school mexican american vibes. Vibrant colors and subtle lighting. Intimate booths perfect for date nights. However the place as a whole a very small. Its hard to pass through the one aisle due to limited space. Our server was very nice and fast. They took our order and food came out promptly. Chips and Salsa - The salsa has a good flavor and is a little on the spicier side. Good and on par with other spots. Carne Asada + Enchilada - The New York strip was ehhh. The seasoning was missing. The cook on it was aight. I was not impressed by the steak at all. I ordered whole beans but got black beans? Oh well. And the rice waqs a bit over cooked but I really liked the flavor and I dont mind overcooked spanish rice. Michelada - I order mine with Bohemia. Decent. Needs more of a kick in my opinion either lime or spice whichever direction you want to take it in. Don Cuco is a nice and subtle mexican restaurant with your basic mexican food fare. We've been here twice, I want to highlight the best parts of both nights. The customer service was absolutely AMAZING! They were very serviceable and always checking up on us. The food came out quickly and hot. However, the flavors were a bit lacking. The first time we got the macho burrito and the tacos dorados plate. The burrito portion was big, enough to share between two people. The burrito kind of tasted like a chimichanga and didn't have a strong flavor that stood out. The tacos dorados were flautas, so you can't really mess those up. We decided to come again for a birthday and ordered a parillada for two. This was a huge disappointment the meat portion was so small! We got 5 strips of steak, 5 strips of chicken and 4 shrimp. It didn't feel like a lot of meat for the price we were paying and unfortunately there also wasn't a strong flavor profile. The ambience of this restaurant is amazing & private enough for a date. We had a great brunch one Sunday at Don Cuco's. We haven't been here in years. Great place for an intimate lunch or dinner. We decided to have a relaxing day at Don Cuco's after a round of golf. Everyone that visits a Mexican restaurant knows it's all about the salsa. They have the most delicious and addicting salsa. I wanted to eat everything with it. It's super light and refreshing. I made sure we had tons of salsa so when our entrees came out, I can eat everything with it! LOL We started with the Guacamole. Our entrees came with a choice of soup or salad. With my Shrimp Yucatan, I chose the Albondigas soup and with his Plato de Carnitas, he had a salad. The Albondigas soup was heavenly, just like my mother-in-law's! Just a savory meatball sitting in it's juices. It couldn't have gotten any better. Mainly meat and not much filler - you can tell by the texture. I love how lightly seasoned the meatball was. The Shrimp Yucatan came with a side of beans, rice and garlic bread. The Plato de Carnitas came with a side of beans, rice and corn tortillas. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the shells came out of them effortlessly. They are perfectly drenched in butter and garlic. Delicious! The side of beans were my favorite. They were not refried beans! So happy for that! They were stewed to perfection and tasted great with the rice. His Plato de Carnitas were moist, tender and juicy. He was in love with the Carnitas. The juices will seep into your tortillas making each bite rich and delicious. We had the best server, Alfredo, and he was a lot of fun. He was such a pleasure to meet. We hope we see him again next time because he was a lot of fun and was so attentive. With that being said, he offered a couple of great Happy Hour drinks. I had the Patron Skinny Margarita and he had a Pink Cadillac Margarita. The vibe is so romantic so we made it a point to hit Don Cuco's for our special date nights! We really can't wait until we visit again. Next time we'll get the Queso Fundido. It is melted cheese, which typically has chorizo, mushrooms, or poblano peppers. It also takes about 15 minutes to make and is usually served in a sizzling hot plate. We made the mistake of not ordering and ordered the Guacamole instead. There is plenty of seating inside, as well as some seating outside. The restaurant is so dark that I struggled to read the menu. There were a lot of options, though, so that was great. Our food was out promptly, and the staff were very friendly. I was annoyed by our neighboring table, whose two girls kept making wretching sounds -- this made our experience unpleasant. We came here on a Saturday night for a party of 11. They were able to take reservations which we felt was great, until we got to our seat. I was about to sit down til I noticed water splash marks on the seat and table. Not a big deal I figured they just cleaned the tables, until.. I was shot at by water. When we told them about it, their solution... place a to go container with a rag to catch the water. So instead of moving us, they kept us there. The seat I was sitting at, had water dripping from the ceiling so I literally had to eat away from my food. Soda was flat as if it came out of a 2 liter. I had asked for a salad with ranch that they forgot about. It was nothing fancy but I expected better. It was your basic bag of lettuce with watery ranch. We had all gotten our food except my child. It wasn't even a packed night. They hand wrote our total to include a 20% tip for what? The service was pretty mediocre. We stared at the bill wondering where the decimal was supposed to be at. GUSTAVO it was absolutely wonderful! So hospitable so kind so classy! Also the Hostess has the front so sweet. The Bartender was wonderful. The whole staff was great. Food was delectable. I had a lobster surf and turf burrito and I would highly recommend the cucumber margarita or the coconut margarita. This old School joint almost 60 years old is a classic. What an awful experience. From now on I'm making the extra drive out to the Simi location, truly the only location with good consistent food and service. How many things can possibly go wrong on a slow Sunday lunch? We sat in the very back, the very last booth, and completely forgotten about all throughout service. I had to walk over to the server station area to flag someone down to take our order. Even after that, impossible to get anyone to swing by to check on us. Ordered a beer and they didn't bring a glass for it. AND the beer was WARM. Food came out warm at best with missing toppings. Service was just unbelievably bad. Get up to ask for literally everything, and they never came to check on us. Water refilled zero times. Then we get up to get someone to bring us boxes, and they plop it down, no bag. Get up and ask for a bag. Lol. Literally self service. Never, NEVER coming back here again. They were good pre-pandemic but fell off completely since then. I'm nearly a 20 year Don Cuco patron, mostly Simi Valley's location. And my recommendation is to make the extra drive out there for a legit experience. Not this trash.
