I stopped by Kalaveras while visiting the Jackalope Art Fair in Downtown Burbank. After walking around in the heat, I wanted somewhere with seating, shade, and A/c. I had passed by this restaurant before but had never been curious enough to actually stop in. This time their drink menu advertised outside caught my attention so I figured "hey, why not?" From the moment I walked in i was trying to figure out whether I liked the atmosphere or not. The music was excellent, but the décor took me a second to process. It felt like an 80s lounge crashed into a neon Día de los Muertos inspired art gallery. It's most definitely not a quiet, cozy restaurant. It has more of a loud, colorful, party style personality. I was seated promptly by a kind hostess but I wasn't attended to by a waiter for nearly 10 minutes. Once my waiter did come by he was kind, quick, and professional. Now, I'm going to be honest.. I'm pretty picky when it comes to Mexican restaurant food, so I didn't have the highest expectations. I ordered the potato taquitos, a Jarrito Loco made with watermelon purée, vodka instead of tequila, and chamoy on the rim, plus chiles toreados and one carne asada taco. Laugh all you want, but I was half expecting the food to come out looking like a cafeteria lady had splattered it onto a plate... I was genuinely impressed by the presentation instead. The potato "taquitos" were bigger than I expected so don't let the "itos" fool you. They were crispy, flavorful, filling, and honestly so delicious. Those get a 5/5 from me. My drink was also incredible. It was refreshing, especially with how hot the day was, and had just the right amount of alcohol. The presentation was so cute I almost felt bad ruining it. Easily one of the best drinks I've had in the Burbank area -- 5/5. The carne asada taco wasn't as impressive as the potato taquitos, so I'd give that a 3/5. The chile toreado was definitely spicy, it just needed to be salted a little more but otherwise no complaints! I need to remind myself not to be too quick to judge because I was genuinely surprised by this place. The décor wasn't fully my personal style, but the food and drinks more than made up for it. Very sadly I'm just in the end of May and please know that the top of my photo 10:32 PM, when it's listed online they were open and they admitted that they knew this... Till 11 PM considering it at least took me five minutes to get back to my car from parking I! very busy Burbank media district....... Yes of course means I was there at 10:20 PM long before... Our experience was disappointing. My friend and I stepped away briefly to use the restroom and specifically told our waiter that we would be back and asked them not to clear our table or throw away our food. We were gone for less than 7 minutes, and when we returned, our entire table had been cleared and our food was gone. The staff did offer to remake our meals, which we appreciated, but by that point the experience had already been ruined. We felt frustrated because we had clearly communicated that we were coming right back. Instead of waiting for the food to be remade, we decided to leave. Walked in, didn't have a reservation but was able to get seated right away. Started off with the esquites with a garlic aioli, cotija cheese and chili powder. The garlic didn't come through at all, which was disappointing, really felt it needed that garlic aioli to come though to make it pop. For entrees, we got the combination plate and the Kali burrito. The combination plate, you build yourself with two or three items between tacos, enchiladas , chili relleno or taquitos. The items were decent but weren't necessarily memorable. The Kali burrito, on the other hand, was very tasty. It comes stuffed with asada, shrimp, fries, jack cheese, and avocado, among other things. A lot going on but very flavorful. Also got a cocktail, just can't remember which one it was, but it was good. Kalaveras is a newer spot in Burbank serving up Mexican style food with a California flare. Would definitely recommend the Kali burrito, and the cocktail was decent. The combination plate isn't bad but doesn't pop either. You can skip the esquites. read more

Made reservations for Cinco De Mayo and was super excited to try this new place! Loved the atmosphere of the restaurant when I walked in. Plenty of big screens on the wall to watch your favorite teams. Music playing loud enough to still have conversation at your table. Our waiter was very kind and attentive. The hubs and I ordered the beef fajitas and my kids ordered the $1.99 tacos ( taco Tuesday special) They have a table full of tacos garnish and sauces for everyone to serve themselves. Which i thought was clever. Ordered a couple of drinks for happy hour, they were pretty delish! Our fajitas came out in a small skillet with onions , bell peppers and jalapeños. They looked really good! Came with a side of refried beans and Mexican rice and corn tortillas. I was a little disappointed even though they fajitas had a great taste they were tough to bite apart. Got here at 11:40 was told last call is at midnight. We ordered fast before you know it we were being told to pay, but not to leave. Never have we ever experienced this at this location and we are locals I don't recommend coming at what time we did. The servers were talking nonsense among themselves as if they wanted everybody out they also turned the lights on pretty early. My wife and I realized the place is ugly and is need of renovation. This place has one of my favorite Happy Hours in the Valley! First, I'd like to pour one out for the North Hollywood location, which was my local Kalaveras, until it closed recently. I loved the Happy Hour there, and found myself there several times over the years I've lived in NoHo. That said, this location is still close enough, and since I'm a regular over at AMC, we get to this side of town a lot too. So, like I said, the Happy Hour's where it's at for me at Kalaveras. The frozen margaritas are all excellent, and at $10, who can beat it? We tried the asada fries too (my personal favorite, $8), the taquitos (also $8 and very tasty) and the birria queso taco trio (again, $8 and delicious). The flavors are great, the portions are reasonable, and the vibe inside is fun and colorful. The servers have been good to us every time we go, and they're consistently checking on your food and drink. The music can get a little loud sometimes, particularly towards the end of Happy Hour, so it definitely might not be your vibe if you want to have a lower-decibel conversation. After Happy Hour ends, I'm usually out of there, because it starts to feel a little more dance club-y and not so restaurant-focused (i.e. louder and a tad bit more raucous). One star for Margarita Monday and the false advertising of this place. They advertised it as $6.99 for Margarita Monday all day yet still charged us $10 for each Margarita! When we asked, the waitress claimed it was because it was a slushy, yet they are listed as the same price on the menu. Please remove the sign on your door that says $6.99 if you aren't going to charge this! Not to mention the addition of extra fees that you neglect to tell your customers about when they use credit cards. This is also an illegal practice, You have the nerve to even have a display of the margaritas and say they are $6.99. The display even features slushies! Please remove this if you aren't going to abide by it! You are luring in customers with the false promise of a deal. Also one star for rude customer service! This is not your typical warm Mexican restaurant. This more a sports bar/club layout with some weird purple neon light inside. I've been to maybe 6 different Kalaveras; I've had bad experiences at almost all of them except this one and Silverlake. The Noho one is closest to my house, but I had such a bad experience I've not been back and have been reluctant to write a review, but maybe soon. Now for this location, probably my favorite of the kalaveras so far, I came here on a weekday around 3 pm, and it was empty. Happy hour was just starting, and staff was just chilling, waiting for people to come in. Once we walked in, we were attended to quickly; our waiter, a gentleman, sat us down and immediately went to bat for us. This guy was extremely amazing and attended to all our needs. Explained the happy hour menu and got us our happy hour drinks. My wife ordered her enchiladas not on happy hour, and I got my happy hour wings. The food was delicious; I enjoyed my wings. The only downside about these wings in Burbank is that in Silver Lake I get 8 wings during happy hour, but here I got 5, so I was a little sad when I saw only 5 wings instead of 8. But they were still so good, and I got a happy hour quesadilla as well. The waiter kept constantly checking on us, refilling our drinks and removing dirty plates in a timely manner. The food and everything was fresh and was given to us quickly. I must say this is the best service I've received at any of the Kalaveras locations. The whole restaurant is big, the biggest I've seen by far, and they have their usual music playing, and they have a unique menu of food and drinks. Those long yards I have yet to see at the other locations, so getting myself an Adios Long Yard or a Long Island for $10 was amazing. Overall this location was a great addition to the city and so far seems to be the best of the Kalaveras I've visited, so this means I will most likely return to this one more often than the others. We were in the Downtown Burbank area and starving so we decided to head in here because we checked out their menu online and seemed to have some decent options and they didn't have a wait. Like a lot of reviewers have said, the space is more of a club than a restaurant and the music was loud so don't expect to have much of a conversation. Immediately, we saw that the printed menu was completely different than the website and more limited for vegetarians. The server mentioned he usually works at a different location and when asked what we could do with fish we were given misinformation: first he told us everything was fried and then when he came back to take our order, he said he could add grilled salmon to the salad so I ordered that. Then he came back saying it was not salmon but a white fish and at that point, we just didn't care anymore. The food was okay--the salad was nothing special and the white fish was bland. The margaritas were just okay and [in my option] too sweet and more expensive than expected. My partner mentioned his tacos were pretty good, but based on the chaotic ordering experience, I doubt we will be back. read more

Was not aware that this was a chain when we selected it as a spot to have dinner. However, nothing was wrong with the place and we did end up having some good food and I had a few tasty drinks while we were there. Nothing was really over-the-top outstanding, but nothing was bad and they had some very interesting fusion foods that were unexpected. The only real negatives I need to bring up was the lighting situation and the volume. This may just be a product of me getting older, but both of these were way too extreme for me and for the rest of our party. Not only was it so dark that we had to use our phones' flashlights to see and then zoom in to view the menu, it was also so loud that having a simple conversation with our long time friend we met was near impossible. I understand the need to have a vibe, but when it is impinging on the basic function and comfort of a social gathering for good food and friends, it seems like something is not right. Our server was also pretty good and took care of all of our needs, with a bit of lack if attentiveness in food delivery and drinks. I don't usually suffer in this department as I am usually ordering a beer or some drink to complement the meal, so oftentimes it will be delivered directly by the bar, or offered to be topped up quickly as there is money to be made. But several of the other people at the table were a bit annoyed that she was absent to critical needs during parts of our visit. Everything we ordered was good with a generic Mexican cuisine-centric flair with nothing really wowing anyone. However, the sushi dish we chose was the highlight for me. Although, again, nothing so earth-shattering to be found here. If I find myself near another Kalaveras, there is an even chance I will try it again or potentially look for something different depending on my mood. But if you like general Mexican dishes with a little bit of exciting flair and a fairly extensive menu, give them a shot! read more

First off, the wait - had reservation. Second was given menus. Third the waitress said we could not get tacos, we could only have buffet @ $25 each - way higher than the $5.50 tacos on the menu. There is a self service station for the rest. Worked better for me because I don't like anything on my tacos (weird, I know)! Such a cute restaurant in a great location. The Happy Hour Menu has great prices and options and the drinks are delicious! One thing has been the same every time I visit...service is "meh". I really don't believe it's the fault of the servers. They can get really busy and they are rushing to have to cover a lot of tables and accommodating a lot of guests. Decided to try this recent addition to the Downtown Burbank strip, which used to be Fuddruckers years ago. While the inside had a spectacular atmosphere and our servers were very attentive, the food and drinks were nothing out of the ordinary for a mid-range, Americanized Mexican restaurant. Great place for a group outing or special celebration as their menu is vast. Inside you'll find the walls covered in vibrant graffiti art and Spanish phrases in neon lights, green felt chairs with gold metal accents, silver star-shaped lights that emit a rainbow of colors, and TVs that play a mix of popular Spanish music videos. Food-wise we found the margarita disappointing as it tasted like it came out of a pre-made mix instead of using fresh ingredients. Very lively location on a Friday evening. It's very spacious, high ceilings with lots of tables, several TV screens highlighting sports and loud music in the background. We sat outback because it was warmer & quieter. Alba was our server and she was fabulous.
