I'm so surprised they were empty on a Tuesday night! First time at this location - it's huge. And clean! We were seated right away and helped by Desiray. Ordered the fajitas plate and a few tacos. I tried the steak, carnitas, and Barbacoa (my favorite). They have a special on taco pricing on Tuesday, so the plates come with just the tortillas and meat. There is a self service station for the rest. Worked better for me because I don't like anything on my tacos (weird, I know)! Such a cute restaurant in a great location. The Happy Hour Menu has great prices and options and the drinks are delicious! One thing has been the same every time I visit...service is "meh". I really don't believe it's the fault of the servers. They can get really busy and they are rushing to have to cover a lot of tables and accommodating a lot of guests. Just tried Kalaveras for the first time ever. I know this is a chain restaurant with locations everywhere, but I never got around to going there. I was glad to see this new location open up in Burbank. When walking in through the back, we were just a bit confused on where to go, as there was nobody there to guide us. As we walked through, a staff member asked where we wanted to sit. The service was friendly and it wasn't too busy at the time of day we visited. We tried a few happy hour items and were not disappointed. The carne asada fries were amazing! They had all the toppings you would want. I really like the options for happy hour. Took some friends out for dinner on a Wednesday night, and unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The restaurant was nearly empty, and the staff seemed uninterested and disengaged -- it felt like they didn't want to be there. This was my third time visiting. The first two times, the food was excellent, which is why I came back. However, this time, the meat was full of connective tissue and very tough -- I had to spit out several pieces because they just weren't chewable. Decided to try this recent addition to the Downtown Burbank strip, which used to be Fuddruckers years ago. While the inside had a spectacular atmosphere and our servers were very attentive, the food and drinks were nothing out of the ordinary for a mid-range, Americanized Mexican restaurant. Great place for a group outing or special celebration as their menu is vast. Inside you'll find the walls covered in vibrant graffiti art and Spanish phrases in neon lights, green felt chairs with gold metal accents, silver star-shaped lights that emit a rainbow of colors, and TVs that play a mix of popular Spanish music videos. Food-wise we found the margarita disappointing as it tasted like it came out of a pre-made mix instead of using fresh ingredients. The sweet plantains (maduros) also tasted like the pre-frozen kind you get from Goya, the black beans were average and the meals were somewhat greasy. First off, the wait - had reservation. Second was given menus. Third the waitress said we could not get tacos, we could only have buffet @ $25 each - way higher than the $5.50 tacos on the menu. They ended up charging me $10 & when I questioned the waitress, she said it was because it was a slushee. There was no differentiation on their posted sign out front. I was also charged a 3% service charge for credit card transaction. However there was no notice of such a fee on their menu. I was very disappointed in my experience at this establishment. read more

We have enjoyed the Taco Tuesday special a couple of times now. The first time was to-go and we just settled inside for the second experience. Their happy hour asada fries also made a visit to our table. It's nice the service isn't diminished for either version. You still get access to the salsa bar and for what you're paying, it's hard to complain about the instant gratification of the special. Kalaveras is a decent chain at this point and I'm not mad about its capacity for success, especially as it seems to have some staying power in a space that I'm guessing isn't the cheapest in downtown Burbank. It did replace a chain after all - our beloved Fuddruckers - but the all-ages atmosphere Kalaveras leads with makes this mostly new operation a winning one in our eyes. Like everywhere else, this restaurant is probably not exempt from having to contend with rising food costs. But it seems they do believe in giving you budget opportunities, like $1.50 taco specials, happy hour discounts, and lunch value meals, that ease the tension between the fomo dining out beast and spending more than you'd prefer for wanting to break the home cooking routine. Think their Sunday brunch buffet is the next chapter of our relationship with this place. Right now, as far as we're concerned, they can do no wrong. read more

I've been wanting to come and actually stop by one Sunday to try the nachos, but Sunday has a buffet only, and that was more food than I wanted so figured I would come back another time. That other time was today and it turns out they have a Saturday brunch menu, which was perfect because we just wanted to order some appetizers and graze. The portions are quite generous, the taste of everything let you know it was made with quality ingredients, from the food to the booze. A little out of place, but still quite tasty, They actually have a couple of sushi rolls on the menu. First time visiting this Kalaveras Location in Burbank! Quite frankly we love Kalaveras! We think the business concept is awesome however this location was not giving compared to the others. Upon our arrival we were greeted and serviced by asking us how many in our party and what we were celebrating. We mentioned we wanted a table by the bar. So the host checked us in and told us it would be a few minutes to which she comes back and intends to sit us no where near the are we requested. That was a downer. She then proceeded to take us to the bar are with a hit top table. Chairs were very hard to move with the type of flooring that they have. Our server was nice but did not make a lasting impression. We ordered their nachos but they weren't it. The tortilla was really thin and they didn't taste great! I had their mangoneada which was really sweet and heavy handed with alcohol. Not a very good "Mexican" restaurant. They claim the guacamole is fresh, and maybe it is, maybe they changed their formula (see older pictures when it looks like a store bought scoop) , but it wasn't very tasty to me. I suspect these menu items aren't really made fresh to order. My enchiliada was cold with lukewarm green sauce, the tacos were fine but not hot, so I think a heat lamp or panda express style sous chef is hanging out in the back (premade and just putting things on the plate). The rice was HARD and dry and again, beans were not warm. Our server was great, they have good service so that's good EXCEPT for the hostess who was extremely rude. We made reservatioins and she wanted to sit us at a table when we requested a booth, and when we asked again she refused us. We told her we made reservations (and mind you it was early evening so there were ALOT of booths left) and she rolled her eyes and threw the menus on the closest boothed table. I'm glad she wasn't serving us. I've worked at a restaurant many times and you should NEVER show emotional annoyance, and we weren't even that bad. We saw her go complain to a man at the front and he seemed to have told her it's no big deal (cause it isn't), granted this is all body language at this point. The torta my husband got also was flavorless. The meat was not marinated well, the bread was too much compared to filling. My honest opinion on these two. The chips and the salsa was good so was the service. Very friendly and attentive staff. They have weekly specials looks like and also happy hour menus. Tonight was my first time stopping in for dinner and I have to say that I enjoyed it. The music is a little loud so be prepared to speak up or move closer. Our server Carlos was friendly and helpful. He saved the day with the habanero salsa. He was honest about the two salsa options for the Burrito Mojado not being spicy, so the side of salsa came in clutch. (Rice, beans, salsa aji verde, Mexican crema and queso blanco. Your choice of red or green salsa) I also went for a Chicharron taco. (Pork belly guiso, pickled onion , queso fresco wrapped in two tortillas.) It had a good flavor and I am looking forward to trying their Birria queso tacos or their carnitas next time around. He tries to comp you a couple of dollars today we have a very sweet waitress, but she was asked for the bill and it's now five minutes since we've asked for the bill and she's talking to a girlfriend of hers.
