    Kali burrito
    Justin J.

Was in Burbank and had never been to this restaurant, so decided to give it a try. Not sure what was previously in the space, but it looked fun. Walked in, didn't have a reservation but was able to get seated right away. Started off with the esquites with a garlic aioli, cotija cheese and chili powder. The garlic didn't come through at all, which was disappointing, really felt it needed that garlic aioli to come though to make it pop. For entrees, we got the combination plate and the Kali burrito. The combination plate, you build yourself with two or three items between tacos, enchiladas , chili relleno or taquitos. The items were decent but weren't necessarily memorable. The Kali burrito, on the other hand, was very tasty. It comes stuffed with asada, shrimp, fries, jack cheese, and avocado, among other things. A lot going on but very flavorful. Also got a cocktail, just can't remember which one it was, but it was good. Kalaveras is a newer spot in Burbank serving up Mexican style food with a California flare. Would definitely recommend the Kali burrito, and the cocktail was decent. The combination plate isn't bad but doesn't pop either. You can skip the esquites.

False advertising right here!! It clearly shows it's $6.99 yet they still charge $10 during Margarita Monday!!

One star for Margarita Monday and the false advertising of this place. They advertised it as $6.99 for Margarita Monday all day yet still charged us $10 for each Margarita! When we asked, the waitress claimed it was because it was a slushy, yet they are listed as the same price on the menu. Please remove the sign on your door that says $6.99 if you aren't going to charge this! Not to mention the addition of extra fees that you neglect to tell your customers about when they use credit cards. This is also an illegal practice, You have the nerve to even have a display of the margaritas and say they are $6.99. The display even features slushies! Please remove this if you aren't going to abide by it! You are luring in customers with the false promise of a deal. Also one star for rude customer service! I will never come to your institution again and will tell everyone I know to not come as well!

Walking down Burbank's Amazing Strip we Stopped for "Taco Tuesday" @ Kalaveras (I do Miss Fudruckers Burger's). It was On and We Basically had the Hole Restaurant to Ourselves. Tacos are $1.99 Street Style but the Salsa Bar Offsets the Smaller Size Tacos. Very Nice Atmosphere and lots of Parking!!! * Definitely worth a Taco Tuesday Visit!

The service was ok. The food nothing spectacular. Not a place I would go back to. Too pricy, noisy and over all not a great experience.

This place has one of my favorite Happy Hours in the Valley! First, I'd like to pour one out for the North Hollywood location, which was my local Kalaveras, until it closed recently. I loved the Happy Hour there, and found myself there several times over the years I've lived in NoHo. That said, this location is still close enough, and since I'm a regular over at AMC, we get to this side of town a lot too. So, like I said, the Happy Hour's where it's at for me at Kalaveras. The frozen margaritas are all excellent, and at $10, who can beat it? We tried the asada fries too (my personal favorite, $8), the taquitos (also $8 and very tasty) and the birria queso taco trio (again, $8 and delicious). The flavors are great, the portions are reasonable, and the vibe inside is fun and colorful. The servers have been good to us every time we go, and they're consistently checking on your food and drink. The music can get a little loud sometimes, particularly towards the end of Happy Hour, so it definitely might not be your vibe if you want to have a lower-decibel conversation. After Happy Hour ends, I'm usually out of there, because it starts to feel a little more dance club-y and not so restaurant-focused (i.e. louder and a tad bit more raucous). See ya soon, Kalaveras!

Another mediocre restaurant in Burbank. We were excited to try this place as an alternative to Don Cuco's, but it was disappointing. We should have known better when we walked in for dinner and the restaurant was 90% empty, employees were just standing around chatting. Our waiter was polite, and asked us if it was our first time - we said yes. After we ordered, I asked if they give chips and salsa (as most Mexican restaurants do when you come in), he said it is upon request.. ok, sure, bring some... he brought one small basket for a party of 6. Food taste was not tasty, children's mac and cheese was a total disaster. Drinks were skinny marg's tasted like a sugary processed juice with barely any alcohol. Unimpressed...

We were hungry and decided to give this place our first try because their menu online seemed to have some decent options. When we got there, we were seated immediately. This is not your typical warm Mexican restaurant. This more a sports bar/club layout with some weird purple neon light inside. At most Mexican restaurants the waiters/waitresses are upbeat with lots of personality. The one we had was cold, displayed no personality but was efficient. The food was surprisingly good. Will we come back? Maybe. The food is worth it but the service needs to improve.

I've been to maybe 6 different Kalaveras; I've had bad experiences at almost all of them except this one and Silverlake. The Noho one is closest to my house, but I had such a bad experience I've not been back and have been reluctant to write a review, but maybe soon. Now for this location, probably my favorite of the kalaveras so far, I came here on a weekday around 3 pm, and it was empty. Happy hour was just starting, and staff was just chilling, waiting for people to come in. Once we walked in, we were attended to quickly; our waiter, a gentleman, sat us down and immediately went to bat for us. This guy was extremely amazing and attended to all our needs. Explained the happy hour menu and got us our happy hour drinks. My wife ordered her enchiladas not on happy hour, and I got my happy hour wings. The food was delicious; I enjoyed my wings. The only downside about these wings in Burbank is that in Silver Lake I get 8 wings during happy hour, but here I got 5, so I was a little sad when I saw only 5 wings instead of 8. But they were still so good, and I got a happy hour quesadilla as well. The waiter kept constantly checking on us, refilling our drinks and removing dirty plates in a timely manner. The food and everything was fresh and was given to us quickly. I must say this is the best service I've received at any of the Kalaveras locations. The whole restaurant is big, the biggest I've seen by far, and they have their usual music playing, and they have a unique menu of food and drinks. Those long yards I have yet to see at the other locations, so getting myself an Adios Long Yard or a Long Island for $10 was amazing. Overall this location was a great addition to the city and so far seems to be the best of the Kalaveras I've visited, so this means I will most likely return to this one more often than the others. Can't wait to be back for happy hour!

It might not be the highest ever quality Mexican food but the vibes always make up for it. Good for a last minute birthday brunch or meal and drinks with coworkers!

    Margarita

I recently visited Kalaveras for their advertised Margarita Mondays, priced at $6.99 at their Burbank location. They ended up charging me $10 & when I questioned the waitress, she said it was because it was a slushee. There was no differentiation on their posted sign out front. I was also charged a 3% service charge for credit card transaction. However there was no notice of such a fee on their menu. I was very disappointed in my experience at this establishment.

I love coming here , it's so nice having Kalaveras here in Burbank. It's a great location, nice and open, the ambiance is lively and friendly. They always have good music that makes you want to dance , and the service has always been good. Friendly and knowledgeable wait staff, and clean. The food always hits the spot. I recommend the potato flautas , and the tacos are my go to. Margaritas are a hit, Overall this place never disappoints.

Was not aware that this was a chain when we selected it as a spot to have dinner. However, nothing was wrong with the place and we did end up having some good food and I had a few tasty drinks while we were there. Nothing was really over-the-top outstanding, but nothing was bad and they had some very interesting fusion foods that were unexpected. The only real negatives I need to bring up was the lighting situation and the volume. This may just be a product of me getting older, but both of these were way too extreme for me and for the rest of our party. Not only was it so dark that we had to use our phones' flashlights to see and then zoom in to view the menu, it was also so loud that having a simple conversation with our long time friend we met was near impossible. I understand the need to have a vibe, but when it is impinging on the basic function and comfort of a social gathering for good food and friends, it seems like something is not right. Our server was also pretty good and took care of all of our needs, with a bit of lack if attentiveness in food delivery and drinks. I don't usually suffer in this department as I am usually ordering a beer or some drink to complement the meal, so oftentimes it will be delivered directly by the bar, or offered to be topped up quickly as there is money to be made. But several of the other people at the table were a bit annoyed that she was absent to critical needs during parts of our visit. Everything we ordered was good with a generic Mexican cuisine-centric flair with nothing really wowing anyone. However, the sushi dish we chose was the highlight for me. Although, again, nothing so earth-shattering to be found here. If I find myself near another Kalaveras, there is an even chance I will try it again or potentially look for something different depending on my mood. But if you like general Mexican dishes with a little bit of exciting flair and a fairly extensive menu, give them a shot!

Kalaveras is a great happy hour place. Definitely a restaurant to go to if you're looking for cheap drinks and good food during happy hour. Came here with a big group and they were able to accommodate all of us and even let us do separate checks. It was easy to make a reservation to accommodate our large party too!

We had two separate servers because one went home during the middle of our dinner and both were equally horrible. Not even exaggerating when I say we waited at least 15 minutes after we asked for the check and there were probably only 10 tables in the entire restaurant. And we had to call her back over to ask for a second time. SMH. The food although flavorful was so ridiculously priced it was not even funny. I got a "ribeye ". Was literally eight thin slices of steak, like 1" x 1" size for $42! No, I will not be coming back here for so many reasons. The view is great. Castaways is definitely not what it used to be in the way of quality but at least you get more and you get the view. But definitely not worth it going to this place. It was quite a frustrating evening. Also, if you do decide to go here, just bring a coat when it's a little bit cooler in the evenings cause it does get cold up here and getting the staff to manage the heaters correctly is a whole other frustration. Oh, and valet is your only option for parking up here. It's kind of crazy because a few years ago you could just go park in the lot or the garage that's available there but now they're charging you $11 and it's chaos. I will say that the view up here is great though so if you're willing to forgo all of that for a view for like a one time date or something like that, it might be worth it

The front of the building is a little vaguely marked, and the entrance has speakeasy vibes, which was a surprise. Upon walking in the front door, there is some tiki décor and a small counter in the rear. I remember thinking to myself "what the heck, this is it?". I checked in at the host stand on the left, and was handed me a boarding pass. She then led us through a hidden door behind what looked like a shipping crate. We were now in the real Broken Compass. The interior is a good size. The two-sided bar seats around a dozen. There is a lounge side of the bar that has two large booths along the wall, and another area with comfortable looking couches and lounge chairs. The main dining room has some tiki hut booths, and two sections of tables with half booth and half chair. The décor is pretty extensive with a good mix of pirate, nautical, and tiki themes. There is a lot of bamboo, thatch, rope, cargo netting, skulls and skeletons, port holes, octopus tentacles, jellyfish, tiki lights, and more. The ceiling is dark with various nautical and pirate markings, and even tied up ship sails overhead. The tiki hut booths have the parrots from the enchanted tiki room above them. Even the two restrooms are nautical themed, with beach and marine sounds playing. There is a lot of great décor to look at. We arrived around 2pm on a Sunday, so it wasn't very busy yet. By the time we left a few hours later, it was starting to get busy. We decided to sit at the bar. We started out with the buffalo cauliflower ($14) for an afternoon snack. The serving size was generous, and the buffalo sauce had a good tang. It was served with some sauces, and was surprisingly filling. A nice feature of the cocktail menu is that each drink displays one to three compass stars to indicate the strength of the drink. Their cocktails use a great variety of liquors including ones you don't often see. Many of the ingredients are made in-house. I started out with Chupacabra's Vacation (Demerara Rum, Jamacian Rum, Pomegranate Reduction, Cinnamon, Lime Juice, Bitters, two-star boozy rank, $17). It is served with a flaming lime on top and a little fire show. It was balanced with a light booziness, some light pomegranate flavor, and a cinnamon sprinkle on top. She started out with the Bittersweet Paradise (Jamacian Rum, White Rum, Campari, Passionfruit Syrup, Lemon, Lime, Pineapple, two-star boozy rank, $18). It didn't drink boozy at all, and was passion fruit forward, with light bitterness. My second cocktail was the Bermuda Dune Buggy (Gin, Overproof Rum, Kumquat Liqueur, Cassis, Orange, Lime, Bitters, two-star boozy rank, $18). It had a very unique garnish of a Chartreuse infused gummy which was delicious. The drink was nicely balanced, and didn't really drink boozy even with overproof rum in it. They have a rotating monthly cocktail and she tried the Tropic Like It's Hot (Coconut Washed Lemongrass Infused Rum, Mango, Lemon, Coconut Water, Amaro, $17) which was created by one of our bartenders Daniel. It was served in a Spam can and was light and refreshing with a nice pop of fruit at the start, and a very nice coconut flavor. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and had great conversation with our bartenders Daniel and Monica. They also provided excellent service. Broken Compass supports payment with the InKind app which gives you 20% back (10% on Friday and Saturday) in InKind cash. We had a really great time here, and the drinks, food, décor, and atmosphere were excellent. I purchased a Hork (Horse-shaRK) mug for $50 to bring home as a souvenir. We would definitely return again when in the area.

Ya'll, this here is a gem! You go in and there's none of that pretentious bs. Don't got to worry…read moreabout others judging you. Everyone is literally there to have a good time, doing their own thing. Like I want to say, this is a safe place (?) I don't think I've ever used those words to describe a bar before! There's an entire wall of board games for you to choose from. We played about 3 or 4 games? And each one had all the pieces, amazingly! This just goes to show you that the people that visit this establishment respect and care for the games, which is a reflection on the clientele itself. And of course, you're welcome to bring your own game as well. We got there a bit after opening so we were able to get one of the multi seater tables. When we left at 3PM, the place was packed! The bar seats were all taken and the outside seating was pretty filled too. So be sure to get here early if you're looking for a table. Got an order of the chicken tenders and sweet potato tots. The chicken tenders was alright. But the sweet potato tots were delicious! We also ordered drinks. The food didn't take long and the staff was friendly. Parking is strictly street parking. So don't go parking at the KFC lot next door. Honestly, this place is great! Check it out if you're looking for a spot to chill and hang out! Good people and good vibes all around!

Not bad. It's sort of a niche bar, but it is welcoming enough. The food is completely inadequate,…read morebut nobody is perfect. Pricey. Friendly. Decent cocktails.
