If I could put a review labeling this place the best place on earth, I would. And it is. The moment you walk in, atmosphere, aesthetic, mood, general energy, changes. I fell in love before i even saw the menu. Now don't even get me started on that world class water. Best water I've ever consumed. Perfectly cold and delectably drinkable. They have a whole freaking sign for their sauces and dips. I'm in love. I got a Shirley temple and if i could marry a place instead of a person, the Shirley temple would be my reason. It was FANTASTIC. Our server, Isaiah, was absolutely amazing and on top of things, refilling our water before we even hit half glass. Not to mention his energy and vibe was so welcoming and fun. We got the PuPu platter for two, came out within minutes, I could spend the rest of my life eating that alone. Isaiah recommended his favorite sauces, Garlic Chive and Chipotle Citrus, they were amazing. We got the shrimp and lobster roll, I officially entered heaven. The Isles of Club sandwich was the finishing touch that had me laughing from joy. Near the end of our dining we meant Max, another server, who is absolutely fantastic, brought us everything we needed, boxes, sauce containers, bags, to-go dessert. His energy was also amazing and super fun. Broken Compass Tiki is a pirate themed tiki bar in Burbank. They don't having a parking lot, but it was very easy to find street parking just around the corner on a Sunday afternoon. The front of the building is a little vaguely marked, and the entrance has speakeasy vibes, which was a surprise. Upon walking in the front door, there is some tiki décor and a small counter in the rear. I remember thinking to myself "what the heck, this is it?". I checked in at the host stand on the left, and was handed me a boarding pass. She then led us through a hidden door behind what looked like a shipping crate. We were now in the real Broken Compass. The interior is a good size. The two-sided bar seats around a dozen. There is a lounge side of the bar that has two large booths along the wall, and another area with comfortable looking couches and lounge chairs. The main dining room has some tiki hut booths, and two sections of tables with half booth and half chair. The décor is pretty extensive with a good mix of pirate, nautical, and tiki themes. There is a lot of bamboo, thatch, rope, cargo netting, skulls and skeletons, port holes, octopus tentacles, jellyfish, tiki lights, and more. The ceiling is dark with various nautical and pirate markings, and even tied up ship sails overhead. The tiki hut booths have the parrots from the enchanted tiki room above them. Even the two restrooms are nautical themed, with beach and marine sounds playing. There is a lot of great décor to look at. We arrived around 2pm on a Sunday, so it wasn't very busy yet. By the time we left a few hours later, it was starting to get busy. We decided to sit at the bar. We started out with the buffalo cauliflower ($14) for an afternoon snack. The serving size was generous, and the buffalo sauce had a good tang. It was served with some sauces, and was surprisingly filling. A nice feature of the cocktail menu is that each drink displays one to three compass stars to indicate the strength of the drink. Their cocktails use a great variety of liquors including ones you don't often see. Many of the ingredients are made in-house. I started out with Chupacabra's Vacation (Demerara Rum, Jamacian Rum, Pomegranate Reduction, Cinnamon, Lime Juice, Bitters, two-star boozy rank, $17). It is served with a flaming lime on top and a little fire show. It was balanced with a light booziness, some light pomegranate flavor, and a cinnamon sprinkle on top. She started out with the Bittersweet Paradise (Jamacian Rum, White Rum, Campari, Passionfruit Syrup, Lemon, Lime, Pineapple, two-star boozy rank, $18). It didn't drink boozy at all, and was passion fruit forward, with light bitterness. My second cocktail was the Bermuda Dune Buggy (Gin, Overproof Rum, Kumquat Liqueur, Cassis, Orange, Lime, Bitters, two-star boozy rank, $18). It had a very unique garnish of a Chartreuse infused gummy which was delicious. The drink was nicely balanced, and didn't really drink boozy even with overproof rum in it. They have a rotating monthly cocktail and she tried the Tropic Like It's Hot (Coconut Washed Lemongrass Infused Rum, Mango, Lemon, Coconut Water, Amaro, $17) which was created by one of our bartenders Daniel. It was served in a Spam can and was light and refreshing with a nice pop of fruit at the start, and a very nice coconut flavor. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and had great conversation with our bartenders Daniel and Monica. They also provided excellent service. My husband and I visited Broken Compass Tiki for lunch this past weekend. I have Celiac disease and heard about it via the Find Me Gluten Free app. Supposedly they have a dedicated fryer and many items are marked gluten-free on their menu. The inside looks really cool. You get a "boarding pass" and that's used by the staff to put you at a table. Staff was pretty good and on top of refills. Why not a higher rating? I ended up paying $25 for a gluten-free chicken sandwich and a side of tots. I felt like everything had an upcharge - even ketchup costs an extra dollar when you order a side of tater tots! I understand if anything after your first sauce costs extra, but really, not even 1 ketchup is included on a $4 upcharge to add a side of either tots / fries / potato smiles / onion rings? My "Hot or Not chicken sandwich" by itself was $19 and then I got an (undisclosed) $2 upcharge for a gluten-free bun. We didn't end up getting anything but water because even MOCKTAILS were $16 a piece!!! I want to support small, local businesses, especially in this economy but come on! It's a tiki bar and grill. I would give in 3.5 stars if Yelp allowed but I went up to 4 stars as the service was excellent. The inside is unique and setup like a pirate ship. Came for Happy Hour. Food and Drinks- 1) Sweet Potato Fries- They were like crack and I could eat them all day. If you love tiki bars and tiki drinks, and you are ever in Las Vegas, the Golden Tiki should be among your first destinations. It is world class in the world of tiki and I would even suggest it is the Holy Grail of tiki bars. Short of going to Vegas, the Broken Compass in Burbank just may be the next best thing. It is an outstanding tiki bar and restaurant. The decor is fantastic. The drinks are wonderful. The (limited) food we had was mostly great. And they are kid friendly which ranks them higher in my book (although curmudgeons would surely disagree). The deviled eggs appetizer is absolutely stellar. If you love deviled eggs, these are creamy and simply loaded with flavor. They are also mini-belly bombs so it would be best to share this appetizer with others. We also ordered tater tots and, while you cannot mess up tater tots, they were just fine. The garlic aioli dip was, to my taste, a little sour and a little weird. The drinks, including the names of the drinks, are terrific. For coconut lovers, the Wake Me Up Before You Coco is strong and excellent. They also have three special non-alcoholic tiki drinks on the menu or you can always order a virgin Pina Colada. The place is relatively small but the decor is so incredible, you will never get tired of looking around. The surf music on the sound system only adds to the atmosphere. Even the interesting lobby is worth checking out (if only for for the two pinball machines). This place deserves more than one visit because there are simply so many interesting drinks and food items on the menu. The attention to detail, from the menu to the decor, is superb. Completely amazed with Broken Compass Tiki! We had such a blast. We came in Valentine's Day and sat at the bar for dinner. The menu is so fun and they have lots of options, even veg ones! So fun that it has a speakeasy vibe too. The bartender that was taking our order and making our drinks was great. Very personable! Everyone here just seems like they are in the best mood. I love the decor and the tiki vibe, but the food here is AWESOME. We had the Isle of Club Sandwich and the Hot Chicken Sandwich, both were so tasty. I love this space so much because its just a low key tiki bar but the service peeps were ALL a great team working g to make sure we, the customers, were taken care of. For my main, I had the Smashed Burger (it was good BBQ smash burger with a giant onion ring, but it needed more meat as it did not even reach the end of the bun and the salad that it came with was just a handful of spinach and a little balsamic - how about a couple tomatoes or some onion or something. Ended up back at Broken Compass with friends who were visiting and staying in Burbank, so meeting here made sense. We came as a group of 5 and knew the drill: no reservations, expect a wait. It was about an hour, but we passed the time at Tony's Darts Away which is a 6 minute drive down the road. They texted when the table was ready, and everything moved smoothly from there. My husband and I stopped by this tiki bar recently with our friends, and we had a great time. For drinks; I started off with a Mai Tai, which was very bright, refreshing, and tasty. My husband tried the Banana Hammock Slush, which was also delicious, not too sweet, and reminded us of a boozy licuado. A coworker of mine has mentioned this spot to me and I finally went to try it out on Friday! Walking in, I loved the speakeasy feel- you're handed a "ticket" and go through a secret door into the main restaurant. The drink menu was extensive and super fun. My partner and I shared one of the 2 person drinks and it was SO good! The presentation was also perfection. We split the poke nachos, which I absolutely devoured. I loved the flavor. Who doesn't love a hidden tiki spot? With great reviews, I took my friend, a tiki aficionado, who was visiting from out of town. We got there just after 5pm but parking was already not great. Had a great first time at Broken Compass, a tiki bar for the ages on a mild-mannered stretch of Burbank Blvd., just a few blocks East of Buena Vista. Decor is fun and humorous, making for a lively scene when things get jumping to the bespoke playlist on the jukebox. It was a large affair, and my wife only ate half. I ordered Shut It, Polly!, their very creative version of chicken wings. Like everywhere else, the 6 large drummies are fried, but here the usual Buffalo sauce is replaced by the kind of creamy and slightly spicy Thai peanut sauce you might get with chicken satay. This was a welcome departure, and the sauce was very tasty, but I have to say that I did max out on the sauce before the wings were finished. It's a great idea, but probably better as a share dish -- by my lonesome, it was too much of a good thing. We ordered assorted tiki drinks from their cocktail menu, all of which packed a punch and plenty of flavor, our favorite being The Banana Hammock, which was like a banana chocolate milk shake with a boozy kick. Service was a mixed experience. Some staff were incredibly friendly, while others were aloof and bordering on unfriendly. A little training might help bring everyone onto the same page. *Delayed post from July '25 We loved our experience at this hidden Tiki Bar in Burbank! While it took a bit to get a seat because the restaurant is busy, the waiting area is well decorated and includes a Gilligan's island pinball machine to pass the time. Inside the entire space is curated with fun décor and low lighting. The Spam can string lights and octopus tentacles hanging off the ceiling were our favorites. As for food, I was super impressed with everything! We ordered the Pupu Platter for 2, which came with lots of appetizers. The coconut shrimp had a nice thick crust, with a sweet and spicy sauce. The aloha dippers were super soft in the middle, like mashed potatoes, but had a good crisp fry on the outside. They needed more seasoning (garlic and pepper would be delicious), so we dipped them in the remaining shrimp sauce. The battered spam slices reminded me of the light batter in fish and chips, but spam is naturally very salty, so mixing it with the macaroni salad was perfect! It had just the right amount of mayo and sweet pickles. The deviled eggs with miso were fantastic as well, with the toasted sesame seeds adding a hint of nuttiness and seaweed to bring in the salt. Of all the things on the platter however, these poke nachos were the best and I recommend ordering them just by themselves. They rival some of the best I've had in Hawaii! I love how light and crispy the wonton chips are, crumbling easily under the weight of the fish. The Ponzu and spicy mayo is perfectly tangy with an acidic yet sweet taste. Plus the black sesame seeds on time add a toasty nutty flavor that compliments the fish well. I was surprised at how fresh the fish tasted as well - not chewy at all! Lastly we also ordered the kalua pork tacos, which were insanely juicy. The corn tortillas hold the filling together well despite the amount of liquid dripping out. The bar offers the perfect environment for a Tiki bar- they did a great job on the decor. The bar offers an extensive amount of seating at the bar, tables, and booths. The lighting is dim with minimal light to the outside. When you come to this place you will feel like you were part of the Pirates of the Caribbean. We visited during happy hour which is from 2-5pm on weekdays. The bar offers a list of happy hour drinks and food items. Unfortunately, the multiple menus provided created confusion among the group. I think the added confusion was due to at least one menu item on happy hour menu was at the same price as the standard menu- the expectation is that happy hour menus would have food and/or drinks at a cheaper price than the standard menu. Plus, one of the cocktails was not available during happy hour as the punch was being made- the bar should of substitute this drink for another one- to limit disappointment by customers. Beyond the happy hour menu, the restaurant offers an extensive list of creative drinks, that I look forward to trying. Plus, a good size menu of appetizers and entrees. Also, the desserts described by the waiter sound amazing and unique. As for parking, there is plenty of street parking on Burbank and in residential areas. We got there right at 5:00 and the place was almost full but they managed to find us a spot. The food was great! Mai Thai is strong but tastes tropical, the banana hammock is very light but you can slightly taste the rum, I would recommend if you prefer drinks that are easier to drink. The fries were sooo good. I'm believe it's Cajun spice and it was sooo good with their homemade ketchup and buffalo. The popcorn chicken has a light sweet taste that is actually so nice. Our waitress was sweet but the whole staff makes sure to check up on you and gave good recommendations!! The ambiance is so cool and nice to take pictures at!! Came here with my husband for the first time. The ambiance is nice. Good music. Cozy. We enjoyed the orange popcorn chicken and French fries. Those were a delight. Our waiter is super friendly too. Enjoyed two drinks and they were both good. The second one is a little stronger woo. Tastes like a pina colada. The only thing we wish for our first time was that we weren't stuck in the back corner. What a fun spot! They added this new entrance, where you check in and you're given a ticket/boarding pass , then meter the restaurant and hand over your ticket. It's cute. I really enjoy that they went hard on the theme here. Really feels like you're in a pirate ship/out on the sea. it's done well. The decor, menu item names, and lighting all follow suit. Even the restrooms follow the theme, nice sound of waves and seagulls as background noise. Full on immersive experience. I think the main focus here are the drinks/cocktails. There's a huge menu of options with tiki drinks, rum selections, rum flights, cocktail of the month, rotating slush drinks, etc. For Happy Hour, some of these cocktails are about $3 off. I went with the Wake Me Up Before You Coco Cocktail and it was very good/not overly sweet. The tiki version of an espresso martini but better (imo) But don't get me wrong on the food here, it's also very good! Didn't get to try any main dishes as we were here mostly for shareable and drinks, plus it was Happy Hour. We tried the: Cheese Curds Fish Tots Spam Sliders Crows Nest Deviled Eggs Shut Up Polly - Thai peanut wings Cheese curds were CHEESY and had a light crispy fry, the fish tots came with a malt vinegar spray to spray on which I thought was interactive/fun, deviled eggs had a miso "ramen" flavor which was unique and kind of on the sweet side, and the WINGS WERE BOMB. super crispy with that creamy peanut butter sauce and hint of spice. FYI- they also have a kids menu for the little ones It's a nice place to check out and if you are a fan of tiki bars, it's a MUST! First visit in a while and we noticed a few changes. Entrance now gives a little bit of a speak-easy vibe that is fun, and while I don't think there's less seating, it sure feels more intimate. Same great vibe, though. We were able to grab spots at the bar and service, from Britt, was great. In fact, everyone seemed more friendly, so that was nice. Holy WOW... The menu is clearly labeled, and the food is fantastic. The servers are on point, the kitchen is slaying it. Tonight I had there gluten-free fried chicken sandwich. The chicken was perfectly crispy and the seasoning was on point. I had it with their sweet potato fries, which are straight up some of the best sweet potato fries I have ever had. Absolutely fantastic. I got them with the garlic chive aioli, which complimented them perfectly. Wash it all down with a nice dry cider, and I am one blissful soul. If you're in the area, and you got a little pirate at heart and you, you got to try the broken compass. read more

Everyone's nice here, food is a hit or miss I guess it depends when you go... but my friends loved the drinks and mocktails are delicious as well. It can get a little busy so service everyone is friendly but the timing on getting food will vary. The place itself is cute and it is street parking is easy. read more

I guess there were some good and there were some bad at this place. Love the decorations the drink that I did get were good. They have a happy hour and they have a happy hour punch, but apparently they needed to make new syrup for the punch, though during the whole happy hour, they won't give the punch we asked if there was an alternative drink and they said no. The syrup never got ready during the happy hour time. Also there's tots listed on the happy hour menu to me. Happy hour indicates there will be a discount. There was no discount they were the same price as the other tots. We really did enjoy the atmosphere. It was relatively easy parking. They do apparently have an hour and a half rule! I'd heard about this place and was happy to find it so nearby in our city! It doesn't look like the coolest tiki bar from the outside. But on the inside it is! I'll start with the bad things: it's too dark for these over 60 eyes to read the menus well. It was very loud so I couldn't hear the server who stood as far away as possible. AND our bill for 4 was $329!!! Drinks were about $17 each. The POO-Poo platter was $35! The good parts were the food. I had the pork tacos with a green salad. They were yummy. My guy had the Isle of Club sandwich. Add $4 for onion rings. Add $4 for every side. Add $1.00 for every sauce. They gave me a tiny amount of salad dressing. I asked for more and was charged. Drinks were fun and good. But $17 each racks up fast! It was fun. But I don't think we could go often. And they add 20% to the bill "for large parties or large bill". That's forced tip! read more

I'm not a tiki person, not by a long shot, but when I walked in, I was instantly greeted and almost instantly sat down (once they opened at least lol). My waiter was Max, and aside from being insanely friendly, he was the doppleganger of my tattoo artist! :O Whoa! I ordered the poke nachos and damn, they were delicious! Huge portion too! That's not a big deal to me, because I normally eat the stuff on the chips and just nibble on chips until my party is ready to head out lol It was decorated nicely. Honestly, I can't get over this place! It's so cooooool, the theme, the decor, the food and the drinks it was all top notch. I got the buffalo cauliflower wings which were so tasty I finished the whole bowl myself! They were crispy and well drenched with such a flavorful sauce I cannot wait to go back again!
