This bar was awesome. Love the fact you enter one room before you "board the ship". There is decor everywhere from the cups to the ceiling. The bar is subtlety shape like a ship. Broken Compass is a fantastic getaway tucked away on Burbank Blvd between North Hollywood and Burbank proper. We make a point to visit regularly. If you're into tiki drinks these are the best in the area, and there are always creative monthly offerings and fun specials. The food is delicious, I particularly like the Isle of Club sandwich and the deviled eggs. They clearly care about both quality and creativity with their flavors. Service is always friendly and helpful. It's super well themed and decorated, and there's always cool tropical music playing. My only wish is that they took reservations as on weekends it can be a wait to get in. However, if you go on a weeknight and take advantage of their brief but excellent happy hour, you'll get in quickly. We love Broken Compass and hope they continue to grow and expand! read more

I'm not sure if the LA area is having a tiki revival, but it seems more tiki spots are popping up recently. Or maybe I don't get out very much and haven't noticed them open recently either. Either way this place is pretty cool. It was a British pub prior to being the tiki bar so the outside still has a pub feel it. I met a couple of friends here for some drinks. So we we didn't get to try the food on this visit, although the choices sound and look great. Maybe next time. The service was great and we ended up ordering a few of the tiki drinks on the menu. My favorite tiki drink - the Pain Killer - comes in a slushy form. I was a little worried because usually when drinks are in a slushy form, they are pretty water down. But I have to say the drinks are pretty strong here. I also got to try a few other drinks here as well. The drinks were all good and they all were presented well. Just a really fun place to drink and get together. The place itself is pretty chill; it's the type of place where you can meet up with friends and have a great conversation and hang out. It seems The Broken Compass is doing well enough that they can hire a door guard to sit in an empty a room beside the restaurant to tell people to wait (waste their time) instead of welcoming them in to have a drink. Astounding! This door guard actually told us we couldn't enter to see if our friends had arrived and were waiting inside for us. When we finally got in, we found that not only every barstool was empty, but our friends WERE waiting inside for us an HAD GIVEN OUR NAMES to the DOOR GUARD who wouldn't let us in "until everyone in your party has arrived." I just want to know why this bar went to the trouble and expense of installing GREAT TIKI DECOR, and then pays an idiot in an ugly t-shirt to sit outside the door and stop people from entering! The Compass isn't the only thing that's Broken here. Hospitality training needed ASAP! read more

I can't believe I've never heard of this place but I we came here on Saturday and absolutely loved it! I swear all the cool places are in Burbank. First off the aesthetic is aestheticing! From the moment you walk through those doors you're in a different world. It's all wood, rattan, rope and tiki'd out. We sat in the bar area and ordered at the bar. My husband ordered 3 Dots and a Dash and I ordered a Painkiller. We also order Chips and Guac and Seasoned Fries. The bartender was super friendly and the drinks and food came out pretty quickly. The Painkiller was super yum and if I wasn't such a lightweight I'd have ordered another. My husband's drink was also tasty. He wasn't able to finish it as he was our designated so I unfortunately had to finish it for him. Heehee. The Chips were obviously freshly made and they were so light and crispy. Guac was great too as were the Seasoned Fries. Not sure what I enjoyed more the vibe of the place, the drinks for the food. It might actually be a tie. Wow! We are so impressed with this place! My cousin referred us here and this was both of our first time trying this place out. I must shout out our server Isaiah A. who took really great care of us the whole night and we even shared some laughs together. We got a multitude of different things to try: drinks, appetizers, entrees, sides, and desserts. Absolutely everything was delicious! Broken Compass is so fun. It's like walking into a Disney movie. They've decorated it so well. My big piece of advice- ask to go through to wait at the bar while you wait to be seated. We waited for over an hour to be seated (we were told it would be 40 minutes. Then at one point we were told it would only be 10 more minutes, and it was definitely over half an hour until we were seated). We didn't try to go to the bar because there were 4 of us and we thought we were too large of a party, but they have stand up tables that we could have gotten drinks at. The food was really good overall! We got the pupu platter to start. The miso deviled eggs are to die for. Absolutely divine. The poke was also great, had a great umami flavor to it. We all loved the fried spam! The coconut shrimp tasted exactly what you expect from coconut shrimp. And the happy smiley potatoes were delicious as well. I got the Club Isle Sandwich with tots. I ordered the tots with Cajun seasoning but I didn't taste much seasoning to be honest. Because our table had an array of potatoes for sides, we ordered several sauces - the miso aoli and garlic aoli were fantastic! However, I didn't care for the firecracker sauce. I also ordered the Hawaiian bbq sauce - we didn't love it for the fries/tots, but I loved the bbq sauce on my club isle sandwich! It married so well with the flavors in my sandwich! Now I did think the sandwich might have too much going on with the jalapeño poppers, but when I took a bite of the sandwich, I understood why it had so many things on it. It really hits every flavor profile. We didn't order any desserts because the dessert menu has wayyyyy too much sugar. I will say, we all said the desserts looked like something a child made up. First time I've been to this tiki place and blown away how affordable the food is for late night bites. I got fish tots and fries for about $7 each for a nice dinner to soak up the delicious drinks. The fries come with a seasoning and sauce of choice. I went with garlic seasoning and Sriracha aioli, the fries were freshly made and had a crunchy outside just how I prefer them. The fish tots were not over cooked and even came with a malt vinegar mister! Drinks are nice and strong here but since they are so tasty you wouldn't notice. The bartenders are excellent, knowledgeable and friendly. They didn't mind my questions about food and drink and took the time to explain the menu as it was my first time. Mom wanted fish and chips, so I googled and found this place. She really liked her fish and chips and she's picky. I was pleased to find that they also had gluten-free options labeled on the menu. My husband would have preferred more vegetarian options. He only saw one vegetarian entree but several sides. We will return to try some more of their food. Service was great. All servers were very attentive and nice. It felt very welcoming. We came on a Friday night, which was very loud and more of a bar atmosphere than restaurant. Good to know for future visits. From the fun drinks in cool cups and containers (love the Spam can) to the fish tots and that darn tasty cauliflower bahn mi salad, the food is top notch. I was hesitating between giving Broken Compass Tiki a 3 and 4-star review and eventually decided to go with 4 stars because of the Tiki decor and ambiance (made me feel as if I were in Pirates of the Caribbean!) despite not being impressed with the food & drinks (at least the items chosen on the day of my visit as they otherwise do have many other options I haven't tried). For food, we shared a few appetizers and I had shrimp tacos as a main course. Cute place to hang out for the atmosphere and maybe grab a drink but I wouldn't come back for the food at this time. When you arrive you are greeted in a separated room with just the host and (what looks like) a possible future bar - though when we visited it was just for show. We were given a ticket to give to our inside hostess once we passed through the doors. So cute, so fun! Once inside you are treated to all the feels of a tiki bar! We were told before going in we had 90 minutes to enjoy ourselves at a table and if we wanted to stay longer we were welcome at the bar. I ordered a Mai Tai - come on you have to lean into to it! It was very good and strong just the way I liked it. For the table we ordered wings with Spice Thai Peanut Sauce - you can also get additional dips - they have a huge list to select from which is very impressive. We also tried the Orange Popcorn Chicken and a special of tempura green beans. I think the cocktail drinks are the star of the show. I was really excited to try the house made BBQ potato chips with french onion dip - but learned that is only available during happy hour - which i am anxious to return to experience. If you're looking for a fun Pirates of the Caribbean themed restaurant and bar, look no further! Everything from the secret entrance, to the decor, to the food and drinks is tiki bar / pirate themed. While the service was phenomenal, I found the food to be hit and miss. I loved my Thai noodle salad with shrimp. Adding shrimp brought this dish from $18 to $28, and while I think that's a little pricey for a bowl of rice noodles (with some edamame and peanuts) with five shrimp, it was delicious and I would totally get it again. The poke nachos arrived on a huge tray filled with deep fried wontons. The poke was delicious! Unfortunately there wasn't even remotely enough poke to eat all the deep fry wontons with. I think my friend and I each got five or six bites with Poke pieces in them. That's fine, but they should cut back on the number of deep fried wontons. I hate food waste and I would imagine they end up throwing away a lot of deep fried wontons. We also got the key lime pie for dessert. I love key lime pie, but this was so tart that I could only eat three bites. My friend and I both thought it had a slightly grapefruity taste to it. We did not finish it. A couple of things to note before you head here: it's extremely dark and loud inside. If your of a certain age, as I am, be prepared to use the flashlight on your phone to read the menu. Also be prepared to strain to hear the rest of your party speak. Our bill came to a total of $114 before tax. This included one appetizer, two main dishes, one dessert, and two alcoholic beverages. Without the alcoholic beverages are total would have been more like $75. Drinks are definitely pricey here, but they're also very yummy. read more

I would probably give them a 3.5 if I could. I've been here about four times now, so I feel like I can give an honest review. There's a new door system now. The new front door has a hostess stand, a waiting area and place to purchase merchandise. It was very well lit. When we entered the host gave us a "boarding ticket" which I thought was a cute idea. This lets the seater in the next room know where to seat us. The staff is always friendly and pretty attentive given that it's a pretty loud tiki bar. The main room is kitschy pirate inspired tiki lounge. My partner loves it. He really enjoys feeling like he's somewhere else. This go around, we ordered the brussel sprouts, the pork french dip with fries (special menu item), and a tofu sandwich with fries. The brussels were good. The pork dip was BEYOND salty. I tried to eat it without the dip to lessen the saltiness, but even then, I could only take 3 bites. The fries were overly salted too. By the time I left my tongue felt aggravated from the salt intake. The tofu sandwich was mid. It needed more substance. The tofu was soft and needed more chew to make the sandwich feel hearty. The crunch was not enough. The drinks were good. I got an alcohol free drink and my partner got a shark bite. Both tasted fine. Also, what's with starting the tip pricing at 20%? I normally tip 20%, but I find it a bit ballsy to start at 20%. So, we decided that we will only go for the drinks and the atmosphere. No more eating there. read more

I thought it was just mine. But we all had exactly TWO shrimps per tortilla lol. The salad was around $18 plus $8 if you want chicken). Broken Compass is another great valley tiki bar, with an excellent food menu as well. It's like stepping into Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean ride - they are deeply committed to the seven-seas theme with a ship's mast overhead, porthole mirrors in the bathrooms, and a seagull & wave soundtrack. We ordered several tiki drinks and two sandwiches. The drinks were strong, especially the navy grog. The pirate punch with white rum and absinthe was my favourite. They were presented festively in tiki glasses with umbrellas, flowers, plastic palm tree stirrers. The sandwiches were positively stacked. The (not) hot chicken sandwich was giant, packed with slaw and pickles and a flavourful fried chicken breast. My Isle Of Club was a monster: delectable breaded pork, bacon, pineapple, sauces, plus JALAPENO POPPERS on sourdough. It was a delicious beast. When we were seated, we were informed of a 90-minute time limit on our table. We weren't expecting that, but we were fine with it - we understood that there must be a need for it, especially since the place is rather small. We also weren't jazzed about the table we got - a small table for two flanked, very cosily, by two of the same - but again, we didn't make a fuss about it. The place was obviously busy. The older, well-dressed, well-spoken couple next to us, however, wanted whoever thought up that time limit rule to walk the plank! They had been at their table for over two hours and yo ho ho, they were going to leave when they felt like it. Multiple employees reminded them of the 90-minute policy, but avast! Their asses were staying glued to those seats and they would go down with the ship if they had to. They'd been there when we were seated and they were still there when we left. If a table time limit policy would shiver your timbers too, maybe try coming early on a weeknight when it's less busy. read more

We got the poke nachos, fish and chips and a burger. My 18 year old son who is autistic and eats VERY limited things wanted to order chicken strips off the kid's menu. This has NEVER been an issue but they said they have a strict rule against it. Um seriously? Oh yes, apparently the chef will get mad. Um, okaaay... can I get an adult size portion with an adult price? I'm happy to pay for it. Nope. BUT we could have my 12 yr old daughter "fake" order the chicken strips and have my 18 yr old "fake" order the fish and chips that my daughter was getting. Are you kidding me right now?!? So we can still order the same food that NO ONE else will know the order it was ordered in as long as we check off the box that my 18 yr old WASN'T ordering off the kid's menu. Extremely large tropical drink selection. Fish tots were awesome, Chicken Slider was spicy HOT! While the presentation and appearance of the food is not great, they did had flavor and am glad that it is simple, well cooked food that is not pretentious. Regular tots and smashburger were just ok, but still worth the price. Bathroom is very unique & immensely themed. It actually adds to the experience, which sounds odd. Sounds of the seagulls & ocean in a darkly lit setting were amusing. Servers roam between tables, so we had multiple chances to order. Max & Erin were great, frequently checking in. Food & drinks came quickly. Overall, an 'experience' that makes you want to revisit. Great prices for the area, you should not expect a trendy / forward food menu, and the ambience created is difficult to achieve. The drinks looked cool and fun but two didn't drinks tasted the exact same and they weren't good unfortunately. They didn't taste boozy or fruity, just bitter. I've never had a bitter mai tai. My husband and I decided to spot by here after dinner. We had such a fun time. This place truly gives you a "Tiki" experience! Even the bathrooms have an ocean sound and feel to them. We didn't try their food there like I mentioned before, we had dinner somewhere else. I tried two of their drinks and dessert. I had their chupacabra vacation and their bittersweet paradise drinks. Where do i start......(Food Review) Pros: the Tiki theme is really well done. Even the restrooms are appointed and even plays jungle sounds overhead. So to that the Decor gets an A+ Cons: The food was a huge miss. We got the Pu-Pu platter and i got the Thai Noodle Salad. Appetizers: Everything on the platter either lacked salt, near burnt, or was salted to near Inedible. It was such a miss that we were all quiet about the food. You know that's a sign that it can either go two ways. Either the food is so Good you can't talk, or the food is too Bad that you don't want to say anything in a group setting. At the end of the gathering we all walked out and nobody had anything nice to say after it was served. The onion rings and homemade garlic aioli was the only sides i tasted from other peoples meals. Entree: Thai Peanut Salad with tofu Im trying to find something good about the salad and all i can think of was the Peanuts tasted fresh..... The biggest sin was the "Sesame-Peanut dressing" that tasted like vinegar. If its a vinaigrette list it on the menu as such it was so unpleasant i took 3 bite and gave up. Since it was "Happy hour" and i was still hungry i ordered a small caesar salad, so that i wouldn't starve. It came out and it was so bland i didn't even finish it. Service: Was good but not great, no "pre" drops but 2 table touches. *Check you bill before paying, seems a 4 top they already include a 20% gratuity...... In the end we all decided Broken Compass Tiki was not worth a revisit. The prices, quality of food, atmosphere was okay. I don't drink alcohol so no idea what the cocktails are like so no review there. With a bit more attention to the food would make it more viable. read more

What fun! I wanted to take my son out with some family and friends for his 21st birthday. This place did not disappoint! We ate lots of food from poke nachos, Caesar salad to Brussel sprouts, spaghetti and meatballs and much more. We tried many drinks and all had great feedback. I asked the bartender for recommendation for a special drink for my son and she recommended the chupacabra. It was lit on fire and when he went to get it they announced his birthday and rang the bell. So fun! We all loved it and would go back again. The theme is so fun and over the top.
