Barragan's is the BEST Mexican restaurant I have ever been to! I have enjoyed their food and service since 1984 (Glendale location), and have NEVER experienced anything negative about it. When I am sick, I order the Cocido Soup. OMG! The NEXT day I feel well and fortified. It is delicious in every way. I order their hot sauce, corn tortillas, rice, additional onions and cilantro, and pico de gallo. As an additional treat, I get some tortilla chips and salsa. Mmmmm! First of all, I'm a SUCKER for a great deal, and on Mondays, Barragan's offers $1.75 tacos. How could one resist? It's one of those places that's an easy, comfortable, family restaurant, with a lovely patio perfect for summer evenings. The service was swift and efficient, immediately bringing out warm chips and salsa. Margaritas there are delicious, not too sweet, and pair nicely with the thin salsa. While the tacos were a great deal, they seemed to lack flavor (save for the soft shell carnitas taco, which was cooked excellently). I met friends here recently to have dinner and listen to live music. Everyone was raving about how great the food was, so I was excited to try a new spot. Upon arrival, we were quickly seated out on the patio. There was ample room and, although there was a large crowd, the seating was comfortable. There were plenty of heaters to keep everyone warm. The band was fantastic, a nice nostalgic stroll back in time. The service was decent. The food, however, was likely the worst Mexican food I've ever had. There was very little flavor and everything tasted the same. The texture of the rice dish felt like it had either been way over cooked or prepared from frozen, as it had a strange, mealy texture. The beans were bland and the entire dish was drowning in cheese and sauce. The hot salsa was way too hot and the mild tasted like marinara sauce. At least the chips were hot and crisp. I would return to listen to the music, however, I'd only order drinks or apps. I definitely wouldn't order a meal. The quality was subpar and the prices were on the steep side for what it was. Est. 1961- I'm spending some time, revisiting spots that I first experienced during the covid shutdowns. Most of these were places where in-door dining was not allowed. Barragan's is one such place. I enjoyed the food here, and the patio dining was as good as it was going to be in November of 2020. Now I'm back to sit inside, and to see if it is just as good as I remembered. To start, the salsa is still good and spicy. The Mexican Split Pea soup is still tasty, and the main dishes are still large and hearty. The food is solid. We had the #1 combination (Beef Taco & Cheese Enchilada) $24.95, and the #3 (Beef Taco, Cheese Enchilada & Tamale) $27.95. Everything was good. Not the best Mexican food I've had but still solid. A two plate lunch with a cup of soup and no alcohol was $64, with tax (before tip). They are definitely more expensive then I remember, more so than similar places. Nevertheless, The dining room is comfortable and there is a nice vibe inside. The bar is cozy and this looks like a good spot to watch a game. Had the honor of being invited to an event that was hosted here and was super excited to finally try this place. This family-owned restaurant has been around for many decades and I can see why. The ambience, the service and the food were all so great! We sat on the patio which was perfect for a warm evening, shared some appetizers that were all so delicious, and had a couple of margaritas that were made just right. Bonus tip: there's live music on Wednesday nights and a great happy hour menu, and was also told there's also a DJ (or other live music) on Thursdays or Fridays. The food is usually very good here. However, when I took my two out-of-town sisters to Barragan's, it was very disappointing. Two us ordered off there Lunch Special Taquitos, whereas my other sister ordered a Tostada Salad. The taquitos were underwhelming, but my other sister really enjoyed her tostada salad. I usually order their chile rellenos, which are very tasty. Our server was very nice and accommodating. The ambiance inside is nice if they don't have a sports game playing., which is not often. I'm giving this place 3 stars. The food is delicious but the service is really bad here. I felt like they paid no attention to my table. I had to stop the waiter several times just to ask for water. We went on a Friday night around 7 pm. It wasn't too busy considering it was a Friday during a holiday weekend. The check in is right by the parking lot (a little different than it used to be when it was by the front door). We were given the option to sit inside or outside (which is also new since the pandemic). We chose inside and were seated right away. Service was great. Our server was prompt and helpful. Food was okay. Not great, not bad. It was standard Mexican fare. The steak picado was well flavored and cooked well. A little dry but nothing some beans and salsa wouldn't take care of. The vegetarian burrito was piping hot when it came out. I'm glad I got it with the green sauce as it would have been somewhat dry w/out it. The servings are enough so you'll have leftovers to bring. Definitely returning as we are confident in the service that we'll get and that we won't be too disappointed in the food. Maybe Barragan's was having an off day or terribly short handed. We were seated immediately (party of 8 of a woman's organization) The busboy brought us chips and salsa where he dropped half of a salsa dish on one of the ladies pant legs.. She said 'oh,oh, and he replied that it is not hot only hot sauce and left. No apology, did not offer to bring her a napkin or water to wash it off. Got our order in a timely manner but two ladies orders were not placed. Everyone was nearly finished when they got their order after the waiter was told we were short 2 orders. One other lady and I ordered a blended Margetita which was so watered down, no tequila could be tasted. We told the waiter about it and he brought us another margarita and told us to share it. Ewwww I did not know this woman well enough to share a drink and that was far from being appropriate!! We had to ask for water refills. Barragan's is old-school Mexican. It's been remodeled over the years but certain sections still have that old charm. I got Enchiladas Suizas and they were solid. It was nice to bring back childhood memories when I use to visit the echo park location with my family. Barragans in Burbank was just as tasty and wonderful to visit. We sat outdoor by the fountain enjoyed margaritas and the tasty chips and salsa, we shared a small albondigas between my date and I and I had the ropa vieja (shredded beef with onions and bell peppers)which was very good . Found this place totally by accident! we yelping for restaurants near us at hotel stay that served good menudo. We drove by this place and decided to yelp it as it didn't show up during our search. We went in and were so happy with the awesome fast, great service, delicious margaritas and ice tea, the best homemade thin crispy tortilla chips and salsa and the yummiest menudo and cocido!!! I'm disappointed in my last experience at Barragans. This place has never been awsome or special, just convenient and average. I've been going to Barragans (Glendale and Burbank) for 30 plus years. This last Visit sealed the deal for my last time. For starters, everything on the menu is way excessive on price. 2 item combo is $21. If you go to Taquilas down on Magnolia, you can get a 3 item combo for $21. We ordered the steak fajitas but they were too salty so we wound up returning them and ordered basic taquitos. And on top of everything else, the place was packed! I'm thinking Burbankians are getting charged too much for their Mexican food. Go up to Montrose where your average 2 item combo is still in the mid-teens. read more

A female staff full of charms, blamed me for not complaining ahead of time. I was told by the server what was in the burrito, and was told they had beans, rice and chicken. When finally my order arrived, there were no rice nor beans, all I could find was the bones. This is safety hazard and this restaurant staff is very irresponsible. When I asked for more chips, they never provided. Save your live and your money and find a better place. You don't want to be in a restaurant where staff is irresponsible and there is poor management and they get away with that. How chicken bones could appear in the burritos, I don't know. After patriarch Ramon Barragan passed away in April 2015, I suppose it was inevitable: quality slipped at the landmark Mexican restaurant he had owned and operated, successfully, for 64 years. For my wife and I, Barragan's offered the best chile rellenos in Burbank, maybe in all of Los Angeles. But when we dined there this evening the standout, crispy egg batter in which the chiles were fried had been replaced by some kind of bland, flavorless egg substitute. Had the high price of eggs tempted chefs to make the switch? Maybe. But we would be happy to make up the difference, rather than be even more disappointed at another restaurant. Which was ok .. just seemed to be heavy seasoned .. the taquitos were the really good I have to say .. and the downside was the menudo.. they definitely did not wash it very well prior to cooking and it definitely needed to be cooked longer and this was Saturday night we ate there .,drinks were very generic. Guess the original Barragan owner passed last year. RIP. The prices were on the higher side. Got a "Lunch Special" fish taco plate, about $15.00 , Confirmed with waiter that fish was NOT Tilapia. He said it was "White Fish" . Although the tacos had plenty of fish on them, I could only eat one taco, they were so terrible. After getting home, I called to verify what kind of fish it actually was. They use Swai, a dirty, low-cost farmed fish. AND charge $24.95 for this on regular Menu! Now, the beans were good. The Lentil soup was good. Chips/Salsa OK. But, If you are going to charge top dollar, don't use garbage fish!! read more

I've come to Barragan's different locations for over 45 years. Sunset being the best location food and service wise!! I have been coming to Burbank now for a few years often on for a while now. If I come later in the afternoon during happy hour, I always will drink a margarita, which is normally delicious. I have never ordered from the happy hour menu before today. Today I decided to try a well drink that is noted for $6. I also decided to buy some taquitos off the happy hour menu. They had two taquitos for $10 or they had four taquitos for $15. I could not decide whether I wanted beef taquitos or chicken flauta. They were both listed at $15 each. Upon ordering I asked my waiter a gentleman with white hair, whether it would be possible to switch them up and get two beef and two chicken on the happy hour menu and he said yes he could do that. There were a few other friends that joined us and they ordered the same. Upon checkout time we were charged $10 for two beef and $10 for two chicken taquitos or flautas. My well drink of a Mai tai was now $12 instead of $6. Buy definition of a WELL DRINK indicates: Well drinks, also known as "rail drinks," are mixed drinks made of one or more liquors and a combination of soft drinks. Rum and coke is an example of a popular well drink.  What differentiates well beverages from other cocktails is that they're made with the bar's cheapest liquor. These liquors are kept at the bartender's waist height in what's known as a speed rail. The rail is a rack that resembles a well, which is where the name "well drink" or "rail drink" comes from. The well typically holds a cheap brand of vodka, tequila, rum, gin, and whiskey. Your bar should also be stocked with various juices, sodas, grenadine, triple sec, sour mix, and garnishes like cherries, lemon wedges, and lime wedges. when I asked why I was being charged $12 for well drinks when the happy hour indicates $6 for a well drink. The waiter told me that what I ordered was not a well drink, and I told him that the menu does not specify a specific drink that falls under their well drink category. I asked to speak to the manager, I am unfamiliar with a woman's name that she's a short woman with blonde hair and glasses, and she told me that my drink was not a well drink which I beg to differ. She said that only tequila, vodka or gin would fall under that category but nowhere on the menu does it specify that. Nowhere does it indicate this. We had a little discussion about me asking for two chicken and two beef taquitos and she said that it's either or. I explained to her that I asked the waiter prior to ordering them off the happy hour menu if that could be done and he said yes. She was very appalled that I was questioning the charges and said that she's never had this problem before which I find difficult to believe. I feel this establishment should have told me upon ordering and asking to switch two beef for two chicken and let me know that I would be paying $20 for four taquitos at that point, but I wasn't. In the end, she gave me a five dollar credit so I did end up paying $15 for my taquitos and $12 for my well drink. Please understand that it's the principal that counts here. If I did not order from a happy hour menu that specified these specifics then I would've never questioned it but Barragan's happy hour menu does not indicates their interpretation of well drinks nor does it indicate no substitutions. It's unfortunate that you find long-standing establishments quality and personnel changing. read more
