I celebrated my birthday with two friends at Café Beograd. We started with Burek, filo pastry filled with cheese and spinach which was very good and filling, good for 3-4 persons. We placed our order which included a slaw salad (big portion) then a Beograd sampler special, eight chevapchichi, traditional homemade sausages (similar to Gyros meat), four gourmet sausages, two pljeskavica (serbian hamburgers), two pork chops, & bacon strips on top, perfect for three-four people. Two orders of fries one with lots of Feta and their special bread that they make to order as well as the Burek which takes 15-20 minutes. My likes and dislikes on the Beograd special are the hamburgers were nothing special that appeared to be average hamburger patties, that were plain, the pork chops were so-so a little too tough for me. What I liked the best was the gourmet sausages and the chevepchichi, the bacon was a little undercooked for me. $5.00 for a side order of fries is too much, they're just regular fries you'd get anywhere. The Jelen beer is a must-try, it's a pale lager and the bottle is bigger than American beer, it's definitely worth $6.00. read more

Great cozy place for legit Serbian food (as far as I can tell!). Came here with a Serbian friend who heavily recommended this place and was not disappointed, I wish I knew how heavy Serbian food is on grilled meats and carbs because if I did I totally would've come sooner! He ordered me the Karageorge's schnitzel, which is a rolled chicken cutlet filled with a cheese mixture, breaded and deep fried. It came out hot and fresh, with cheese oozing out as I made my first cut; it was as satisfying and indulgent as it sounds. However, I think the sausage platters my friends got were even better; they were so simple, just a couple sausages and also some heartier spicy sausages, with sides of chopped onions, sour cream, and eaten with bread. There isn't a ton of meat but the sausages are packed with flavor. To finish, my friend got a crepe filled with "Eurocrem"- it's like semi-Nutella, but instead half is cocoa flavor (like the Nutella we're used to) and the other half is a creamy white hazelnut mixture, which together taste like a super sweet, richer and less chocolaty Nutella. The crepe was perfectly thin and delicate, and surprisingly long. Great end to a super satisfying lunch! I would totally come back to try some of their other meat offerings (the combination meat platter with sausages and pork chop sounds amazing), as well as their other traditional entrees. read more

We love Cafe Beograd! My sister in law is Macedonian so we originally learned about burek and cevapi and all the other goodies but Cafe Beograd is our local go-to for beef burek. We absolutely love it and the employees are always so nice in there! The best!!! We continue to get takeout beef burek and will never stop. Entering into a Serbian restaurant, you might think there would be no vegan options...and you'd be wrong! They have very clearly labeled options on the menu that are vegetarian/vegan. My friends and I delighted in the cabbage borek and it was incredibly flaky, I couldn't believe it was vegan! Beograd is no frills, just good food, and a ton of it. Our table of four split the Beograd Special and a spinach and cheese Burek, and we all left full, even with some leftovers to spare. What's better is that even with a few rounds of drinks, our bill was very reasonable at the end. The space is modest and homey feeling, completely unpretentious, which was kind of a refreshing change of pace from other restaurants, and also made it feel more authentic. The food was also very, very solid. The Special is essentially an all-you-can-meat platter (heh), with a couple of types of sausages, pork chops, and hamburger patties, topped with a pile of fatty, thick cut bacon that drizzled juices down over the rest of the meats. Incredible. Our Burek was also very tasty, and definitely didn't skimp on the cheese. The service was also very fast and friendly. Beograd's menu is giant, and there are a lot of other items that looked fascinating, so I'll definitely be back. This place is great if you're ready to eat. read more

The waitress was attentive and helped us order everything we wanted, and also made some other recommendations! It was all amazing - took a bit for the food to come out, but they state this on the menu, and we didn't mind waiting since it was all made to order! The Serbian salad was amazing and all of the bread was extremely fresh. The sarma was one of the best stuffed cabbages I've ever had - the meat inside was smoked and so flavorful. I can finally say that I experienced Serbian and Regional Balkan cuisine! I truly can finally say such a thing. I never knew that I wanted to say this, but thanks to Beograd, I am happy to say as such. I am convinced that long standing families that cook together will produce the most delicious food. Beograd has been a family owned and operated business since 1984. Just a look around the facilities and you will see family photos as well as influential history icons of the Serbian and surrounding cultures. There service is top notch as well. Maybe I am weird, but I do not mind a person that comes around to check to see if my glass needs refilling, while also allowing me to actually eat my food. They do not rush you out, because it seems as though they enjoy having a person eat their food more than they are interested in making a dollar off the person that walks through the door. My service was simply of this nature: 1. What would you like to order? If you do not know, I have some suggestions for you. 2. These items will take X number of minutes. Would you like a drink until then? 3. Here is your food, is there anything I can get you before you start your meal? Would you like the drink refilled. 4. Many minutes later, after several staff passed by and ensured the drinks were filled: How is the food? Please stay and enjoy it more. That is a great dining experience. Drink full without me having to flag down a person to do as such, plus a competent server that truly knows the best items on the menu for a person that has never been to the area before! Learn how to hook in a potential return customer! The food is grand here. I mean that texture, portion and most importantly, taste are prevalent here. I had the following items: Appetizer: Shopska - tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, onions and feta cheese. Think of this as a really fresh salad. Spinach Burek - Filo pastry filed with a blend of ingredients. This is a House Special, and I recommend this to anyone that is a fan of quiche or any quiche like items. The main dish was a meat extravaganza. I was presented the mixed sampler plate which comprised of three chevapchichi, two spicy pork sausages, one pork chop and pljeskavica. All items consumed at Beograd are made in house. All of them. Every item. There is a meat market on site, so even they cut the meats themselves. Freshness is an understatement. As a fat man, I am telling you that the salad, Shopska, is phenomenal! There wasn't even salad dressing on it. The salad blended together so well to whereas you did not need anything more than the light olive oil that they placed on it. If eat continued to eat this, I would lose my fatness, but it is so good, to whereas I am not sure I would mind! The spinach Burek had a nice balance of cheese, spinach and love. This dough present item had nice flakiness and was very pleasant to eat. Being a fat man, I prefer to munch of meat filled, meat grilled or meat of some form items. All in all, you got what you came to expect from a meat mixture, but in my opinion, the spicy sausage is the true winner out the entire platter. The delicate blend of spices did not add unnecessary heat to your mouth, while providing your taste buds with happy times of chewing bliss. The dessert, The Ice Cube, was a great blend of cake, custard and love. Not sure what to say about it besides that! Was not heavy at all, and very well balanced with texture and taste. There are not enough positive time and energy to truly explain how happy I am with this place. I have never physically been to Serbia, but my taste buds have. My taste buds says that I will be happy if my Southern Soul had to stop in that cold place for a little while! The mixed grill plate, just like all their BBQ, takes 20+ minutes to prepare because of them not precooking anything. I was shocked to see how much food you truly get with your order, and how little the food actually cost. You can get a fat stomach here, if you don't live on Shopska, and maintain a fat wallet here. I showed up to this place VERY LATE night, and the inside was still half full, and the plenty of outside seating was completely full. That is how good the food is and how good of a value this place is. I never heard the staff ask anyone to leave once! For all of my readers that drink alcohol, they have Serbian brandy that is supposed to be really good. This place is Fatman approved and frugal meter approved. Get here now! read more

The bread is incredibly fresh, the Cevapi and other sausages are juicy and freshly cooked and hot. Bring a breath mint for the onions but if you like simple but delicious .... On a random morning, I stopped by since I was just down the street fixing my car and decided to try the crepes while busting my study on at the same time. I got the Crepes Eurokrem which is essentially a Serbian version of nutella. Weirdly enough...I also had a banana with me, hence the decision to try the crepe. Holy goodness - SO good. What a steal at just around $3! The mixed fruit tea was delicious too and it's so nice that they bring you honey with the tea. Beograd has quite the eastern Europian look to it inside, especially the gorgeous ceilings. Around late morning, a bunch of families also came in and no one was speaking any English. I wish I could tell you whether they were speaking Serbian, but alas, I have yet to master most of the European languages...but if it was Serbian, it only speaks for the authenticity of Beograd! Great service, very cool and new ambiance for me. Lovely outdoor area to dine as well. Wow this cafe is amazing. They have a full bar, an attached store, and a delicious menu! They also have yummy coffee drinks and an outdoor patio. All your Serbian favorites are offered. They have a good sopska. Burek is a good size and a good price. My favorite is the pizza. It's European style - first the toppings, then the sauce, then the cheese. Seriously so good, one of my favorite pizzas. My only complaint is the service. Most servers are pleasant but some are not very welcoming. I visited Beograd last night and have to say that I wish it was closer to where I live so I could come back! I had salmon with grilled vegetable and it was awesome. My friends had some salty crepes called "palačinka" or something along this way (I am spelling in my native language, Czech but it sounded very similar in Serbian), I tried a bite of that and it was super tasty! All the food was absolutely delicious and the service was nice and fast which was surprising because you would not often expect that at an authentic Eastern European restaurant. Lol, sorry for the honesty, but being from Europe I feel like I got the right to say this since customer service here in the U.S. is totally different level. Anyway, my favorite thing is that the place has an outside patio and it is dog-friendly, so bring your furry friends! The only reason why I am not giving five stars is that they only have bottled beers and I am a draft beer fan. Come on, I am a Czech girl, you gotta understand! Half grocery store and half bar/restaurant: Both are worth the trip. The cashier is always nice. If I lived closer I'd be in this Slav/Euro grocery store every week. The products seem higher quality than big chain grocery stores with their food factory sameness. Beograd has marks of human discretion that generate a warmth that other stores lack. Burek, chevapi, plieskavitsa are all memorable. But the best is...the bakery. Cakes and cookies that I have not seen anywhere else in Chicago. Holy moly, maybe it's good that I don't live closer. The cake flavors go beyond the standard American chocolate and yellow. Come to Beograd and cultivate your palate. I crave burek, sausage(chevapi), and cake now. read more

My first time trying Serbian food but I loved it. Yum yum! Our server was brand new but very friendly and gave us really good recommendations. Ordered the cheese and spinach burek (reminds me of a spankopita but with thicker and chewier pastry) and chevapchichi (looks like breakfast sausage links but tastes kind of like beef/lamb kofte). The chevapchichi was definitely my favorite thing - looks so simple but tastes SO good. I love that it's served with onion and yogurt to add some brightness and balance. We (3 people) went late at night (9 or 10pm on a Friday night) and we were seated right away. Restaurant is nestled within a residential street. I visited Beograd with a colleague of mine, for a late lunch. I had never tried what he told me was Serbian food, and was interested to see what exactly it was all about. We ordered a few starters - a cucumber/tomato/feta cheese salad, that was very fresh and "crisp" to eat. We then had a meat and cheese sampler tray - where i was educated on how pork was aged and what all of the different types of meats i had, what was available back home and how it was prepared. Lastly, we ordered a hot meat sampler, which had some chicken, pork sausage, and a pork patty. I didnt mind any of it, but he said that it was missing some of the char flavor that made him think of food from home. Throughout the meal we were sipping a plum brandy. Apparently this is commonly made by families in eastern european culture in their yards. Everyone makes it... very strong plum flavor, and a whiskey like burn going down. Lastly, for dessert we had a crepe. This thing alone would be enough for me to go back. It had sugar on top with what i think are graham cracker crumbs. Filled with a nutella like spread. The batter was the perfect consistency for a crepe. Amazing. I enjoyed trying out a bit of a different style of food, and may be back in the future. read more
