This unassuming little restaurant on Irving Park is a SOLID option! I have gone by this place SO MANY TIMES, but today, we rolled in for Cevapci. I love some Cevapci, and had a taste for it today. We got that, along with the Vitamin Salad and some spinach/cheese Burek. EVERYTING WAS STELLAR. The Cevapci - juicy, tender, savory, MY GAWD SO GOOD. Ten little gems, nestled into a loaf of really tasty bread, with onions and a yogurt dip on the side. Oh, and don't forget the Ajar - the savory red pepper dip that is perfect on these little babies. Perfectly cooked. Vitamin Salad! Talk about "eating a rainbow!" This had carrots, cabbage, beetroot, cucumber, arugula, corn, garlic and a nice vinegarette. One salad was PLENTY for two to share, and I'm eating the leftovers tomorrow. Vegans would FLIP for this salad. Vegans or vegetarians would find a lot to love here. Burek. ENORMOUS. A large disc, the size of an average pie, with spinach and cheese. This would easily be enough for an appetizer for four. And VERY tasty, flaky phylo dough, gooey cheese YES. The interior - really modern and cool! Love the Beograd-influenced posters on the wall, nice graphic design. A great bar in the back, suitable for hanging out in the evenings for sure! Bathrooms - I inadvertently used the Men's room, I think (does it really matter, though? NO.) and it was SPOTLESS. Outdoor patio l looked good, but as it was a million degrees on this day, we opted for inside. The staff! Handsome, friendly, attentive, JUST GREAT! Put this little boite ON YOUR LIST. Oh, WAIT! There's also a grocery store attached!! So many Balkan delicacies, Ajar, syrups, picked things, olives, pates, tinned fish, cookies, snacks, booze, grooming items, yogurt, beverages, a meat counter and a dessert counter! We love Cafe Beograd. It's a must when friends and family are in town, plus I love bringing anyone here who is food-adventurous and interested in trying something new. We often order the beef burek - and it is my favorite dish on the menu! It is the size of a dinner plate and cut into 4 pieces. The dough is delicious and chewy and the very outside is so crispy. Inside it's stuffed with flavored ground beef. It's SO good. We also often get the chevapci and/or the bacon-wrapped chevapci. I personally like to eat these with ajvar, a thick roasted red pepper side sauce. Actually, I like to eat everything here with ajvar. Definitely recommend you try it! On my most recent visit we also had the Shopska salad, which was soooooo good and I highly recommend. I love how they grate the feta cheese over everything. I've also had the serbian salad. Cafe Beograd is absolutely incendiary. As a Croat, we share similar foods and this place welcomes you into the feeling of walking into your babica's kitchen. I've also been happily surprised that everyone here is so nice to me and we can talk about the differences and similarities between Serbs and Croats. I think the staff is absolutely lovely and always helpful with a recommendation. So speaking of recommendations, this menu is AMPLE. With most Balkan food, there are minor differences between certain items so I do recommend studying the menu and getting an idea of what you want to order before going if you are not familiar with the food. My go to order (with a group): Shopska $9.75 Garlic Red Peppers $9 Cevapi (10) to share $20 Potato Burek $15 Dimljeni Vrat $20 Treat yourself with some rajika too! This plum brandy is the perfect compliment to cut through the heaviness of some of the food. You also can't go wrong with a Jelen, and keep them coming throughout the meal. The patio is beautiful, with a large mural of the most famous Serbian with a Croatian homeland, Nikola Tesla. I think going to the shop next door after the meal is just economical since you're usually too full to over-buy! I anxiously awaiting the first nice day of the year to come hang out on their patio. I came here with a group of friends and we had a great time! We shared the big meat platter which allowed us to try a little bit of everything. I really enjoyed the bacon wrapped sausages. I will be getting that next time. I also really liked the puff pastry with meat inside. It was perfect. We got a spinach one too, but give me the meats! The only downside was that I wasn't too thrilled with my cocktail. It was ok, but I was hoping for more flavor. The service was pretty good, especially since we were such a large group! I'd been hankering to try this place for many months, and finally found the time to drive over and give it a try. I'm not sure what I think about the cevapi. For my taste, the cevapi themselves are a little too rubbery, and the bread a little too fluffy, but the ajvar was great, and the kajmak seemed to be the real deal if you like that kind of thing. Maybe it's just not my thing, as this place obviously has a devoted following and is one of the few places doing what they do. My disappointment with the cevapi aside, though, the cheese burek was just outstanding -- salty, cheesy, crunchy, and satisfying. I'm not sure how the crust stayed so crisp, flaky, and excellent even after being wrapped in a bag and driven in my car for over thirty minutes before we broke it out, but it did, through some kind of magic. If you are one of the regulars you probably don't need my review telling what you to do. But if like me you're just here exploring, maybe skip the cevapi and focus on the Magic Burek. read more

Cafe Beograd is in the Irving Park area of Chicago. It's northwest Chicago. Also, Horne Park and California Park are just east. I like the neighborhood. The building itself is beautiful. It's a nice historic red brick building that sits on a street corner. I also loved the mural of Nikola Tesla, on the side of the building. The interior of the restaurant has a nice feel to it. It's clean and has a nice bar along with plenty of seating. It's also like stepping into a portal, going over to the former Yugoslavia. After entering the restaurant it didn't take me long to be seated at a table. I was seated at a corner high top table near the bar. It gave me a nice view of the whole restaurant. I started off with a Jelen beer from Serbia. Jelen pivo is a pale lager produced by the Apatin Brewery from Serbia. It has a nice smooth taste. For my entree I ordered the Mixed Sampler Plate. It comes with three cevapcici, two spicy pork sausages, one pork chop and pljeskavica. If you've never had Serbian grilled meat, this would be a great entree to order. I also ordered a Serbian salad as well. Entree was beautiful. Serbians grill meats very well. The salad was delicious as well. It's a lot of food and will absolutely fill you up. Definitely bring a healthy appetite! I passed on dessert or coffee. My only feedback for this place would be to pay attention to patrons when they've finished their entree and it's time for dessert or the bill. My waitress passed by me several times when I was finished, never bothering to ask me if I wanted dessert or the bill. Overall, a good experience here. I would return here again when I decide to visit the Windy City again. I strongly recommend this place if you've never had food from the former Yugoslavia. You're in for a treat! read more

We did takeout recently and ordered a variety of things which were all quite good. Spinach and cheese burek was the highlight of the meal for sure. Huge order, half served as leftovers tons of great cheese with delicious flavor to brighten up the burek. Meat sampler was good, nice way to try everything but without a doubt the cevapcici was the star of the show and incredibly delicious. Schnitzel was just ok. It was well cooked and prepared but felt overly reliant on just lemon to give it some flavor. Including some ajvar would've been better. Speaking of, and this was the main negative, we got ajvar and urnebes as sides. $4 a piece. Ok fine. But to then get just like a tiny little container of so little of each dip was crazy. Where should i begin... It's been 15 years ago when i stepped first time in Cafe Beograd and i am still coming back. Everything and i mean everything on the menu i did try and it's delicious. From cevapi, mix meat platter, beo burger, gourmet burger , sausage , stuffed burger, chicken to karadjordjeva, panini, pizza, crapes, cakes... Staff is always friendly, professional and knowledgeable. They will make your stay pleasant as possible. With few renovations that were done in the past, place is super cozy and has that European vibe all the way - great patio in the summer time. Café Beograd was an outstanding choice for a Chicago dinner. My friend, who is Serbian, suggested a Serbian restaurant, which was new to me. My brother-in-law is also a Serb and a chef, but he rarely makes Serbian food. What a treat! It was a wonderful experience, with lovely service and delicious food. We shared the two dishes pictured, and it was still too much to finish. The meat Chevapchici was lean and tasty. The burek was so savory with feta providing a bright flavor. I texted my brother-in-law and he will be checking out café Beograd the next time he's in Chicago. It was worth the $25 Uber ride from the city. You have a convert in me, and I will be back! I came here on a Friday evening with my cousin to grab a bite and a drink after a long flight. We were able to get a table pretty quickly. The food was good and the service was incredible. I would definitely tell people to come here! First I have to rave about the service here. The entire staff was super friendly and we had several different people stop by to check on us. It didn't matter that we added on extra things with different waiters, everything came out quickly, and correctly. When we asked for recommendations people were friendly and gave us good advice. The menu, people, and experience were very authentic. For drinks we got a hot chocolate, a Serbian brandy, and a Serbian beer. The hot chocolate was huge and topped up with an incredible mound of whipped cream. The brandy came recommended by our waiter and was pretty good. The Serbian beer (Lav) was very smooth. 10/10 would recommend. For food we got the sampler plate and the spinach and cheese burek. The sampler plate was pretty good variety and I liked it a lot. Super cool and neat spot. Cafe Beograd features Balkan cuisine and its very delicious. I've tried other Balkan restaurants before and this is definitely one of my top favorites. My table got two Burek's to share. Burek is a savory pastry/pie baked in phyllo. It's crispy on the outside and filled with a filling of your choice. My favorite one was their meat filled Borek. We also got a sampler meat platter. Our meal came with complimentary house made bread. The waitress was so lovely and nice. I will note this cuisine is kind of heavy, but if you're looking to try something new I highly recommend this place. read more
