Someone recommended trying this place. I was in the area and got in line for walk ins. With the cold weather, I was 2nd in line 15 min before they opened. They opened 5-10 min late. They had everyone snake in so people were not standing in the cold. Every item was explained, but they were making more items in the back (pizzas, certain croissants, sandwiches). I got a few items and they were delicious. I had to wait an extra 15-20min for the Gochujang croissant and so happy that I waited. It was so good. Also, based on what others said, I knew there would be a lot of waiting so didn't mind. The staff is busy and moving fast. Inside is simple and clean. Items with tax came out to $10 each. I am picky with baked goods and will be happy to go back. Different flavor profiles and you can taste the quality. Will try for preorder at some point.
Let me start by saying I still adore this place, am so glad to have it in Garfield Park, and wish them continued success. No matter what you get here, it's going to be delicious. That said, there's ample opportunity for improvement on the customer experience side of things. Be prepared to wait! The days of a quick pop in for a pastry are few and far between. The store may open a few minutes late and preorders may or may not be on time. It doesn't bother me to wait a few minutes, but when I went to pick up my Thanksgiving preorder half an hour after my scheduled pickup time and there was a line out the door for *preorders*, I wasn't thrilled. Unfortunately this was repeated for the Christmas preorder as well. On a regular walk in day, no pastries are labeled, so the offerings have to be re-explained as new people join the line and/or get to the front. Just listing regular offerings (Matilda chocolate cake, chocolate chip toffee cookies, cruffins, cretzel, etc) with images on the website/instagram highlights for people to reference and know what they're looking at would be helpful. Cafe Babette has made it clear that this is just part of their vibe, and they're not planning on changing anytime soon. I wish them the best of luck and hope to be a frequent visitor again in the future.
This was my first time here. On Sundays at 7pm they open up their online ordering for the upcoming Saturday. The online ordering usually sells out within 10 minutes. I was finally able to online order. Yay! Today, Saturday, I picked up my order at the time I selected. When I saw the line outside I asked how it works. The line outside was waiting to purchase any pastries they have on hand. If you pre-ordered you go inside to find your box and then leave. The line to order was long so I'm glad I pre-ordered. Once inside it was packed. I wanted to get a picture of what was available to purchase but I couldn't get close enough. The inside was decorated nicely and it seemed the staff was working diligently to get everyone in and out in a timely manner. They also have apparel you can purchase. I opened my box when I got home and let out a WOW. I only ordered two pastries and each pastry could easily feed 2-3 people. . I ordered a coffee cream croissant and a cardamom + cinnamon croissant twist. I have tasted both and they're delicious. Now I understand why pre-order sells out so quickly and why there's a line waiting to get in. You gotta check this place out! They are located near Garfield Park.

We just pulled up, my son ran in and picked up a big box of pastries and then we headed back to their home. I think I tried everything in the box and everything was amazing. I would definitely go there again.
Despite all the controversy they manage to sell out and attract a line of customers around the block every single day. I had to try it and I think their creativity is unmatched. Pastries are quite expensive but huge and unique so you're paying for that value. It's not an every day thing for me but I wanted to support them before they move to Spain and I enjoyed what I got! Coconut cake and cookies were my favorite.
If you have never been here then set an alarm and plan to go when they are open. It is an amazing local business that started in a house, then as a pop up and now as a regular occurring bakery of delicious tasty pastries! Every time I go the service is amazing, the flavors fabulous and the options beyond what my taste buds can handle almost. My favorite so far is the pretzel bread (if I have to pick). Soft and pillowy but yet also crispy with just the right amount of butter and flavor. Yum! This spot is a amazing and so perfect for the community, a bakery as if from heaven in our backyard!
They are only open for a few hours and the line is huge. I was sure it wasnt going to be worth it...but it was. They just make incredible bakery items here. I got the breakfast sandwich on homemade bread and everything on the inside just emulsified into one solid-melt-in-your-mouth bite. Insane flavor on that. I also got some monkey bread which they dolloped with a ladel of caramel which was as thick as toothpaste. I ate that on the drive home and had sticky caramel all over my hands. The line should go much faster but it seems like every customer wants to play their little game of 20 questions with the staff. Come on, folks ! Just point at what you want and pay. You dont need the complete ingredient list and process that goes into every item. Sheesh ! Great place. I wish they were open longer.
As visitors from out of town, we didn't feel comfortable pre-ordering for pickup because we wanted to see the items to help influence our order. We don't regret that decision and rationale, but I'm not going to pretend that I enjoyed waiting in line for an hour on a Saturday morning. But that wait really speaks to the popularity of this weekly "pop-up" bakery, its endless options of sweet and savory baked creations, and of course how scrumptious everything tastes. The highest marks for me went to the savory items. Oversized croissants + heaping amounts of cheese + breakfast meats = heaven. Hard stop. We got two different varieties of croissants + a sausage roll and they were worth every minute of the wait. We got a few sweet treats, and I can't even remember what they were. They were good, but the savories were the winner of the day.
Before Cafe Babette was located off Shelby Street, they made the pastries out of their house in Franklin. You could pick a time and pick them up there. My favorite pastry was a creme brûlée cronut. Fast forward a couple of years and they have a shop within walking distance of Garfield Park. They have pre orders and walk ins lines outside. I wish they had menus of what they had made for the day for people waiting in line to look at to maybe know what they would want before they get inside. We looked on the menu this morning and couldn't find any of the pastries. Maybe some little signs in front of the pastries once you get inside also. Maybe even a tv with a menu on it. They have such pretty pastries that are works of art. I've had the strawberry cream and coffee cream croissants and both were so light and delicious. The croissants are flaky. They have savory and sweet items to choose from. Ham and cheese croissants, Matilda cake, and great soft pretzels with a garlicky ranch dip. That did would be great with veggies and so much more. It's so good!! The browned butter sheet cake slice I got I think is my favorite. Very simple but has great flavor. The owners are very nice and they have a good following as they have a line out the door before it opens. It's hard to choose what to get because they have a lot and it all looks delicious.
I've had Cafe Babette saved for a while, but saw a picture of the banoffee croissant and that was all the inspiration I needed to put in my pre-order for the upcoming Saturday. When I pulled up there was probably already 30 people in line before they opened. But, they came out and separated the lines into pre-orders and the regular line. For pre-orders, we just went inside right away to pick up the boxes. Since the line moved more quickly than I expected, I was actually there about 15 minutes before my pre-order time. I just told them my name and they put it together in the back real quick. You can tell they are used to having a line since they had it under control and everything moved efficiently. I am so glad I pre-ordered. I peeked at the pastries out for sale and they all looked so pretty. I already always have a hard time deciding what to order, I'd still be there trying to pick. The pastries are almost comically large. I actually laughed out loud when I opened the box. I ordered 5 of them so I could try a little bit of everything, but it was more pastry than I could handle. I went for the banoffee croissant and that was good, but my favorites were actually the carrot cake cupcake and the earl grey monkey bread. I read on Instagram that the carrot cake is soaked in a pineapple syrup and I think that's the secret. Unpopular opinion - I don't like pineapple in my carrot cake but it's almost always in there. This had the flavor of pineapple without the huge chunks and it was so good. Plus, I could just eat the brown butter frosting by itself.
They hype is real! They started out as a pop up, then found their location in Garfield Park. There is always a line waiting outside for them to open. Currently they are only open Thurs, Fri, and Sat until they sell out (which doesn't take long). Most items are croissant based. They offer sweet and savory ones. They also offer cake slices, sandwiches, drink specials, and muffins. Their menu is different each day, so you never know what they'll have...unless you subscribe to their newsletter! There is a huge advantage to this, because then you can pre-order and skip the line! The price is a little high (imo) but the portions are large. One reason for the pricing is because the owner orders in small batches; since she is constantly changing the menu. This also makes it hard to return to find your favorites again. It is definitely worth a try, and the experience, at least once. When I went on a Saturday for the first time, I arrived at 10a for a 10:30a opening. They didn't take the first customer until 10:45a and I left with my purchase around 11:15a. So, I was in line for about 30 min and was probably about the 15th customer. One reason I think it takes a while is because everyone has to ask what each item is, there is no signage. This would be super helpful to customers and staff. I know items change often, but having interchangeable signs in front of each item, or even on the wall, would be helpful. In chalk or dry erase. I ordered a sweet croissant (strawberry) and a savory croissant (french onion soup). They were both delicious and full of flavor. The fluff in the strawberry one was perfection!
I recently visited for the first time, on a Saturday, and all I can say is WOW! They're truly doing something special here. Service and product are equally amazing. I found street parking close by, and though the line and wait were long, it was worth it and I appreciate the efficiency while still taking time with each customer. It was so good, my husband went back the same week.
No words! It's insane to think of the flavor combinations and how well they work. The crab Rangoon puff pastry and the French onion soup with goat cheese danish, TO DIE FOR! The mango curd cheesecake danish was my favorite sweet, the mango curd is incredible. Love how creative this place is, it's definitely worth the wait and the fight to pre order. Would recommend 100%. Be prepared to make a line and keep an open mind, they run out of things quickly.

This amazing, quaint pastry shop serves up delicious, flaky pastries, sandwiches, drinks, and even some fun merch. The moment you walk in, your taste buds come alive from the mouthwatering aroma of fresh baked treats. You can truly tell each pastry is handcrafted with care. They are large and perfect for sharing. I tried the pretzel caramel breakfast roll, which was the perfect balance of salty and sweet, along with a twisted cinnamon roll that was rich and buttery.The Chicago-style croissant dog was another standout, it was a good twist on the traditional Chicago dog. If you're planning a visit, pack your patience,especially on a Saturday because th wait time can be a couple of hours but it's absolutely worth the wait. Thursdays and Fridays tend to be less hectic, though the selection may be a bit smaller. I'm so glad I stuck it out for the two-hour wait,it was completely worth it. read more
I know they will be closing soon but I couldn't resist saying how AMAZING Cafe Babette is and how much they will be missed. Went today and got some of the most life-changing pastries and cookies I've ever had and can't believe I won't be able to get them ever again! The owners will be missed - I wish them all the best. Took 3 weeks of effort to get preorder submitted... I drove down from Zionsville and thought..."what am I doing". We make morning buns and croissants from scratch... these are buns on steroids. 1 bun should feed 4 people. The morning bun applecbuttercream has a lemon zest in it and its sitting over the top of a cinnamon brown-sugar crunch filling folded into a fresh philo dough sprinkled with powdered sugar. My notes for this place read: "expensive, worth it" The pastries here may be on the pricier side, but it's hard to get pastries this good outside of France! Additionally, most of these things are as big as your head, or bigger! My only criticism is that ordering is pretty stressful since it's hard to know what everything is called or what everything is! There is just a remarkable amount of diversity in the pastries offered here, just the sights and sounds are an experience all of their own! read more

The place to get pastries when you wand to impress someone. I can't even begin to describe how delicious ALL of the desserts are. I've never waited in line actually but the preorder situation is always really smooth. Highly recommend these decedent and delicious pastries! read more
If you go on the weekend just know you WILL be waiting in a long line. Worth it? Yes. Could it move faster? Also yes. Here is the thing, people picking up orders can add to their order right there at the only cashier and that is what slows everything down. Great idea but Saturday needs a little work. So you are standing in this snake line, people are squeezing past you to grab their orders off the bench, someone is standing right next to you waiting for theirs and honestly at some point you just start making friends because what else are you going to do. There are not many people behind the counter so patience is key. Now the menu? Overwhelming in the best way. Do not be greedy like me because I ordered a whole bunch of things, took one bite of each and barely finished half a dessert. I have no regrets but my eyes were way too big for my stomach. It is a small spot but it is such a cool little place and yes standing in that line is absolutely worth it. read more
Best pastries I've ever had in my entire life. A MUST TRY. Arrive early! We went on a Friday morning and arrived 30 minutes before opening and the line began filling up quickly. When you walk in they explain everything they have. Well worth the price, staff were amazing, and the bakers are extremely talented and creative. We will definitely be regulars here. read more

WHAT INDY WAS MISSING! A family-owned local pastry shop with the fanciest and most high quality desserts you'll come by in the city. I preordered online knowing the lines could get long and was shocked seeing 15 people waiting outside on Saturday morning with another 35 inside waiting eagerly hoping to get one of the last baked goods. I was able to walk right up and get my pink box, cutting through the line. I got the chocolate chip cinnamon muffin which had the PERFECT glaze mix of crunchy and soft inside with melted chocolate on top, the glaze twist which was HUGE and so sweet!, and two chocolate chip cookies that I ate on for the rest of the week (they heat up so well in the oven in just 5 min!). Thank you for making Indy feel like NYC, Cafe Babette you are just AMAZING! read more
I've been a Cafe Babette fan since day one! I've ordered from their house, pick up boxes at Tube Space, and of course their permanent location on Shelby St. When people hear I order Cafe Babette, they always ask what I get and then my first recommendation is to order less than you think because the pastries are HUGE! Second, is always preorder unless you like waiting in a huge line. The banoffe croissant with the Thai tea carmel has my heart! I had it over a year ago and they recently brought it back and now I've had it 3 weekends in a row ...help! The cardamom twist is also a staple. I dislike matcha except in a pastry and theirs is exceptional. You can't go wrong! read more

A 2 hour wait in line for pastries? Yup, and it is worth it. These are not your typical pastries; the flavor combinations will have you thinking, "how can that taste good?"; and they are delectable! Also, the size of the pastries are enough to last for a few days (store in a container, not in the fridge). Staff, too, are so friendly, making the trip to Garfield Park even more worthwhile. read more

Café Babette was ok for me. I don't know what I did. I think I didn't make good choices compared to the raving reviews I saw. I heard it was a pop up shop, but wasn't expecting the desserts to be out on tables out in the open. Just my preference/opinion. I also would've appreciated some parchment paper to separate my items in my box. I ordered the peppermint filled croissant muffin. I think I would've liked another flavor. The peppermint wasn't doing it for me. I did enjoy the lemon cake. The coffee cake was a little dense for me. And not very flavorful. The croissant bagel was also just OK. Guess I'll have to go back and try some other treats. read more
I preordered pastries from here for my friend's bachelorette. They were a huge hit! They were ready exactly on time, pick up was easy, and the pastries were beautiful. All of the flavor combinations of the pastries were so fun and unique. Will definitely be ordering again soon! read more

A bakery that made me think 4 days before what I wanted to order on a Saturday. It sounded insane to my friends but pre-orders for Saturday order ends on Wednesday night, however, walk-in's are welcome. They post the menu on their social media so you can review the options before heading in. Tucked in the Garfield Park neighborhood, Cafe Babette has croissants and desserts better than Paris!!! I pre-ordered online and was able to get 10% off by signing up for emails. There is no line to pickup orders but the line for walk-in's on Saturday could have you standing there for an hour. Once inside, the pastries are not labeled so you either have to go with the appearance or ask someone.. I ordered three pastries - sticky toffee glazed morning bun was #1 for me and coffee cream croissant was a closed second. The raspberry lemon croissant danish was nice but I didn't love the combination of three different flavors in it. Also the raspberry tasted a lot like jam to me. For the size of pastry, they are very fairly priced ($8-9 per pastry). I'd definitely go back - I will still pre-order as I hate waiting! read more

I was immediately inundated with beautiful smells and the most incredible pastries I've seen! They sell the cutest merch! All of the folks were too cute and so helpful! We tried Cafe Babette for the first time last Saturday morning. We got there a few minutes before opening, and there was already a line of people waiting in the cold for the doors to open. Once inside, we had plenty of options to choose from. We purchased eight different items, and I felt they were priced fairly for the size and the flavor. My favorite was the blackberry roll of sorts - I'm not 110% sure what to call it, but it was DELISH. I will absolutely be supporting this business in the future, but will likely place an order online to avoid having to wait in line. Warning; pre order does sell out and close pretty early from what I've found so far. If you think you want items this weekend, I suggest placing an order sooner than later! read more
Go go go and take your friends! Me and my sweet friend spent an hour in line on a Saturday morning and I'd do it again in a heart beat! We got a sweet box and a savory box and there wasn't a bad thing in the bunch! The savory things were out of this world. The cretzel (croissant pretzel) in particular, we also got a spinach artichoke croissant, and a miso corn focaccia bread that I haven't been able to stop thinking about! The sweets were great in their own right as well. I particularly loved the cookies! We had a peanut butter one with marshmallow fluff topping, and a brown butter toffee chocolate chip that changed my life. This place is my go-to for an indulgent Saturday morning and mandatory when I have out of town guests. Highly recommend the cretzel, pavlova cupcake, and honestly most things on the menu but the real surprise for me was the strawberry mochi bun. I didn't even want to order this because it sounded just wrong, but now it's my regular order. The chewy mochi and crunchy pastry is next level. My only complaint would be the size of the pastries. They are absolutely enormous. I would pay the same price for 33% LESS pastry. I know others said they were expensive, but they are on par with other bakeries in the area (like Amelia's). You can find a cheaper pastry, but it will not taste even half as good as this. read more
Clearly the food is the star of the show at Cafe Babette! No frills, just tables with decadent sweets and savory treats and a couple of sheets of fabric hanging to separate the working area from the front of house. I mentioned to friends that they clearly are super successful and I'm shocked they have not done more to "spruce up the place" to which my friend responded: "They don't need to!" Very true! The items I had were wonderful and had amazing flavor and taste. I especially enjoyed the French Onion Soup and Goat Cheese Croissant Danish, as team savory it was pure croissant bliss! The Strawberry and Cream Croissant was huge and had great flavor and was surprisingly not too sweet. I was lucky and got a text message since I'm on their order update messaging texts that come out once a week. I snagged a preorder (they often sell out in 20 minutes or so!) If you don't have a preorder, join the cue that often wraps around the block and hope for the best that they will not be sold out by the time you get inside! read more
Let me start by saying from a food standpoint-the pastries are exceptional. There is plenty of variety between sweet and savory, something for everyone, and all of them are beautiful! Some of the best pastries I've had outside of New York or Europe without a doubt. Staff is also very friendly and happy to answer any questions on the pastries. Now for some suggestions-they are a newer business, so I think they just need some time to work out the kinks. My suggestions are these: stanchions and ropes, which would make the line move more efficiently and eliminate confusion, as there is no real clear line, which creates longer wait times as you just kind of stand in a conglomeration of people. Along with this, I think someone standing outside or at the door, so as to not let the inside get so crowded could help. The other major thing to make things go quicker and waste less time explaining what items are would be to just create some simple labels or signs, so people could know what things are before they get up there. Overall, I think just these small improvements could make the line move so much quicker, as it took us about 90 minutes to get through the line, with likely only 25 people ahead of us. The pastries are top-notch and I think Cafe Babette has a bright future ahead! read more
