I came for one free donut... and left with a box full of bad decisions. I'm originally from Connecticut and was driving through Indianapolis on my way back to Louisville when someone told me, "Don't leave Indianapolis without stopping at Long's Bakery." Whoever you are... thank you. You changed my life. The sweet woman behind the counter heard where I was from and handed me a complimentary glazed yeast donut. Let me tell you... WHEW! It wasn't even fresh out of the oven, and it still melted in my mouth. Light, soft, perfectly glazed... I knew right then I was in trouble. I ended up buying a box with blueberry cake, applesauce cake, cinnamon sugar, Bavarian cream, glazed yeast, and a few others. Everything was incredibly fresh, and at those prices, I had to double-check the menu because I thought I was reading it wrong! When I got back to my parents' house in Louisville, we warmed a few up for just a few seconds. Game over. They somehow tasted even better. My plan was to take some to church tomorrow to share... but judging by how fast they're disappearing, I may be testifying about them instead. Before I left, the woman smiled and said, "Make sure you come back when you're in town." Oh, I'll be back. I may even create reasons to drive through Indianapolis now. Long's Bakery doesn't need fancy displays or trendy flavors. They simply make outstanding donuts with friendly service and prices that make you wonder if they accidentally forgot inflation. 10/10. First timer here as I just moved to Indy. Went at 8 pm and so I was fearful the donuts would be stale. Boy was I wrong, they were delicious. I asked the young Man working whats his favorite and told me blueberry cake so I got that and a cinnamon fry. So so so so good. The blueberry cake was so light and moist. It was perfection. The cinnamon fry had a bit too much icing for me but was good. I put it in the toaster oven the next day and scraped some icing off and it was so good. This place is outstanding as proven by lines out the door late Friday afternoons. Everything is made from scratch on the premises. We tried breakfast pastries, donuts and even bought a whole cake. Most donut shops/bakeries put out their items in the morning and when they are gone they are gone. Not here, they keep making donuts throughout the day. You can go late in the afternoon and the selection is just as good as when they opened that morning. I like that. The cashier thought this was too few. I like that. Lab results came back in record time... Long's is a shoe-in. First in, last out build. She's really got it all. It warms my heart to know that amidst every race, color, and creed these sweet treats are common ground in Indianapolis. Amidst my brief queue, Doug laid some insight into his order. One cinnamon fry, taken home and microwaved. He drove down twenty some minutes just for that! I love the friendly reccs, really do, but that breakfast disc isn't surviving the parking lot. Don't expect a seat, frills, or pastel frosting. Instead savor the price and modest excellence of this storied grounds. History is written by the victors and it tastes pretty damn good! I stopped for donuts on the way to see my daughter because I knew she'd appreciate the treat. I don't remember what day it was but it was pretty busy so maybe a weekend. I was still able to snag a parking spot right out front so I got lucky. The workers were very friendly and helpful in helping me decide what to get since it was my first time. I ordered a cinnamon roll/honeybun, regular glazed round and/or twist, brownie, and I think I also got a chocolate chip cookie. Everything was delicious, I just can't remember if they have buttermilk bars so I couldn't give 5 stars. The fact that I can't remember tells me if there was one it wasn't memorable. If you're in Indy, you have to try Long's bakery. They have the most amazing, light and fluffy yeast donuts that just melt in your mouth. I went in the afternoon and there was a line of maybe four people ahead of me but I was able to get my donuts pretty quickly. A few things to note, they are cash only so come prepared with your stack of bills. And also the interior is pretty small, there wasn't anywhere to sit and eat inside so it might not be the best place if you're looking to meet for breakfast.
