My mom, daughter and I went for our September birthday celebration tonight. Our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable. We started with the artichoke dip appetizer. It came with a salsa, sour cream, and chips. It was very tasty and the perfect amount for an appetizer. My mom and I both got pizzas, a margarita pizza and a pepperoni pizza. Single serving size was perfect. They both were very good. My daughter got the wedge salad and black bean chili. The salad was tasty but the chili left something to be desired. It was rather bland only tasting like plain black beans. She was rather disappointed. She ended up sharing some of our pizza. We then had dessert to celebrate our birthdays. Creme Brûlée and an ice cream brownie dessert. Those did not disappoint. We all left happy and full. When you're trying to please picky parents in a crunch and find your self in need of lunch then make your way to 501 cafe. Food: cafe style yummies. Does that make sense? I guess when I go to a cafe I realize it is hit or miss on food quality, but when I walked in 501 I immediately noticed they'd be hitting it out of the park. Everyone's food looked amazing, my dad almost asked a women what she was eating so he could order it. Then of course we got out food and I'm salivating now just thinking about it! I split a salad and a sandwich with my mom and not only was it a TON of food but I might want to eat that California Club on my deathbed. Atmosphere: it's really cute inside, and there is plenty of seating. The bathroom is giant and has a love seat, but it's only one stall.. Which I clearly find notably odd. Next time you want someone to watch you pee, in a luxurious bathroom then I guess you know where to go! Service: the cashier was great and our food came out quickly for the size of group we had! I'm almost always going to pick meat on sandwiches, but my friend told me to get the grilled veggie sandwich and oh my gosh it was a sandwich sent from Jesus himself. Great food, great bakery, but last I went, they did not place my Togo order properly. Make sure when you place orders that you absolutely make sure what you want so they don't mistake Togo's for dine-in and vice versa. Hosted a bday dinner that grew in size to 21 last minute. The team at 501 made it happen and took care of all of us beautifully. Chef Joel and his team are making some exciting and delicious food that is worth the drive to Edmond. Shay took care of us tonight and let me tell you that she is a pro! What a way to set the pace of our experience Shay and Dylan made some of the best well balanced drinks and made us feel cared for the whole night. Why 4 stars? Because as Sarah said, "this place is just lovely." --- --- --- CM's think alike - she took the words right out of my fingers. The drill at Cafe 501 is that one person in your party goes hunting for an open table, while the others wait in line to order at the counter. Or at least, that's the most efficient way to do it :) My Thai burrito was solid, but my favorite part of the experience was found in the desserts. This place is just lovely. This is the original 501 location and is still my favorite. From the hole in the wall feel to the comfortable yet nice ambiance this place is has it goin' on. Grab a menu - looking at the board can be overwhelming. There are so many great menu items and ingredients featured you don't want to miss. You order upfront then grab a seat to your liking. However, there are still servers so make sure you tip! The menu is a smorgasbord of nice salad, sandwich and soup options. I highly recommend the portobello mushroom sandwich. It's hearty with excellent flavor. PRO TIP: Get a bag of granola and I apologize in advance for the addiction. We made a reservation here for our wedding night in Hot Springs. We are not from here. they graciously greeted us and walked us to our table that had an actual reserved sign on it! They took away the grilled vegetable sandwich a couple of years ago. It was a lot better than the vegetarian sandwich they have now (portobello sandwich). It was probably my favorite sandwich ever. Anyway, the manager was helpful enough and said to simply add Swiss cheese and zucchini to their portobello sandwich to make it similar to the grilled veggie sandwich. Sure, no problem. BUT, without fail, every single time I order it, the employees say they don't have zucchini. They always seem very put out by this request and argue with me. It's a frustrating experience every time, especially since I always order this and they cannot seem to remember that they do, in fact, have zucchini. It's even in other dishes on the menu, like the Mediterranean bowl. I wish the employees were a little less rude and a little more helpful. It seems pretty standard that employees should have a solid grasp of their menu. Several employees have been working there for multiple years and still cannot recall their menu. I wish they would just bring back the grilled veggie sandwich. With all of that said, it's a nice ambience and every menu item I've tried is of quality. This is obviously quite a specific complaint, but after almost three years of this, it's gotten pretty old. Editing to add: this is a problem in particular with an employee named Angela. I'm starting to think she just intentionally lies about it so that she doesn't have to go through the effort of pressing a button. I don't know. The pasta salad side that comes with the sandwiches is kind of just filler, not remarkable. But, we went to the Edmond location for brunch on a Saturday morning and it was great. We got pancakes that were great and the avocado, sausage, egg English muffin with hashbrowns that was so good! I love Cafe 501. The food is delish, although their prices are a bit steep. I guess I should preface this review by saying I have only eaten here for lunch and continue to order the same thing because I like it so much. My favorite thing to get is their pick two combo: for $11 you pick between salad, soup, or half a sandwich. There are multiple options, but I seem to always gravitate towards the spinach salad and club sandwich. The spinach salad is spinach greens, tossed in a creamy vinaigrette and topped with an abundant amount of thick cut, good quality bacon, big chunks of creamy blue cheese, and freshly candied, wonderfully sticky pecans. So yummy! It is an explosion of flavors in my mouth. The club sandwich is pretty straight forward: ham, turkey, bacon, but then they get crazy and add guacamole and sprouts. I love sprouts, and not too many places offer them. They are the red headed step child of sandwiches; no body includes them, but yet they are amazing. Although the food is great, I still think $11 is still a bit too expensive for salad and a half sandwich, because it doesn't even include a drink. They offer your basic sodas, plus delicious fresh brewed flavored tea (both green and black). Cafe 501 has some pretty amazing looking desserts, although they are also pretty pricey. My dining companion pointed out that an entire carrot cake costs $55! What?! Carrots are crazy cheap, that kind of blows my mind. Regardless, the desserts are good. They offer pretty tasty cookies, cupcakes, slices of cakes, and cake balls. I guess I think it is odd that Cafe 501 is so pricey considering it is a counter service restaurant. It would be one thing to pay $11 for a combo for a fancy, sit down restaurant, but Cafe 501 makes you do most of the work. You order at the counter, get a number, go get your own drink, find a table, and then someone brings your food. Just a bit high, but it is definitely worth it every now and then. Cafe 501 is the sister restaurant to Boulevard Steakhouse. It is a reasonably priced upscale family restaurant that consistently adds new and inventive dishes. Their 501 salad and homemade dressing is to die for. And the deserts will blow you away from the Velvet Cake to the Flourless chocolate tort it is impossible not to find something to satisfy your sweet tooth. We have been regular patrons for 6 years and on the rare occasions an order is mixed up, it is immediately remedied. A must for expertly prepared dishes for all budgets. My husband picked Cafe 501 in Edmond to celebrate his birthday as well as his dad's birthday, who recently moved to Edmond. The primary reason for his pick: a twice baked potato. The item they no longer serve: a twice baked potato. Despite the disappointing news when he was looking at the menu, his birthday dinner was still enjoyable. He ordered the filet, his dad ordered the short ribs, and I ordered the shrimp and grits. The filet was cooked to his order and was tender and juicy. The short ribs served with mashed potatoes were good but the mashed potatoes were the star, from the one bite I had from my father in law's plate. The shrimp and grits were good, nothing spectacular but no complaints. The desserts really are spectacular and definitely worth saving room for and worth the calories. The service was excellent and the cocktails delivered in good time after we were seated. The waiting area is super small but it was a Wednesday evening and they weren't super busy, plus we had a reservation. A few days later I had a lunch meeting here and instead of getting a big meal, I opted for the vegetarian black bean chili so I could have a cookie.
