Came for brunch at the recommendation of friends, and left feeling like we didn't matter. We had a reservation and showed up within a 5 minute window of said reservation. We were seated promptly, but that was the only prompt nature of the day. It took someone almost 20 minutes to even engage us, ask about drinks, etc. We then were informed we had to order quickly as the kitchen was closing. If we'd of been greeted within a few minutes of sitting, this rush wouldn't have happened. We saw three tables seated after us, two which were greeted before us and one that just up and left after about 10 minutes and no greeting from staff/server. The waffle itself was very tasty, albeit lacking a side. Would love if it came with potatoes, fruit, or bacon and we didn't end up with $35 for a waffle and a side + a $20 brunch cocktail. Yes, it's LA and yes, it's an upscale boutique hotel catering to the downtown crowd, but we ain't asking for much here... just a few berries or half an order of potatoes. Upon exiting and trying to take a photo in the lobby, we were greeted by excellent front staff, but some of the patrons were very rude. Again, par for the course but more of a beware to those trying to get a nice photo in the beautiful lobby area! Hopefully things get fixed and, if you have guests with a 1:45 or 2p reservation, they are being tended to quickly to avoid the kitchen closing rush. Ok I went here for my bday and loved it.y husband has been wanting to take here and it disappoint. The ambiance and style are amazing.. I want my house to look like that. We ordered the entire menu and did family style .. everything was shareable ..the burger was the only thing a bit more difficult to cut but we managed. My favorite was the steak tender, juicy, and the right about of sauce. The fish was my second favorite and the sardines with the appetizer was soo good! I'm a salty person over sweet so def the savory was the best. We stayed at the Proper Hotel and it was so convenient having such a delicious place to grab breakfast at in the morning. All of our food was so delicious especially the Carnitas and sweet potato hash and the Piri Piri Avocado Toast. It is on the pricier side but I take into account the high quality of the food, great service and convenience of not having to take an Uber or drive somewhere else. I got all dressed up and came here for a one-night only, dining experience from Chef Carla Hall. This is not my favorite location. Parking is a beast unless you valet. I don't fancy valet. Getting in my car and having the seatbelt smell like a fragrance that is not my own doesn't tickle my fancy. I also haven't really been dining indoors for the last few years. But I risked it for the chance to eat the heavenly delights dreamed up by Chef Carla Hall. And so now listen here-- after this dining experience, I'll park in hell and walk over hot coals to get this goodness. It was a surreal experience. The staff was warm and helpful. I was brave and went all by my lonesome. A four course meal. Delight after delight. I noticed myself slow down so I could enjoy the deliciousness longer. The very lovely Chef Carla Hall worked the room. Her presence elevated the dining experience to ethereal levels. Seranno kale pistou...What? I'm not sure, but I'm certain I want more. Curried sweet potato salad - Growing up, my grandma would bake a white potato for me when it was baked sweet potato night. I'm not in to a potato that is sweet. I know, I know. But I'd eat this curried sweet potato salad errday. Black-eyed pea hummus - Long ago my family revoked my Black card because I side-eye black-eyed peas. I inhaled this hummus like I was a vacuum. Shrimp & grits served in a cast iron number. I live. I love. I almost cried. My great-grandma was about that cast iron life. I still have two of her cast iron pans. They are over one hundred years old and lovely as ever. Oxtail and okra - I don't usually fancy okra. I fancied this version of okra. I fancied the hell out of it. Re: Oxtail - I paused a moment and thought to myself, "Are you really gonna pick this bone up and finish it off like you are sitting in your Aunt's kitchen.?" That bone didn't stand a chance. #Shameless I won't get into the dessert sampler, because I'll start drooling and I have no way to get more at the moment, but a few words...banana pudding with caramelized sugar on the lovely cover piece of banana. Say whaaaa? It was light and fluffy and not too sweet. Yo! Don't do this to me if I can't stop by for one of these jawns daily. This was comfort food without the discomfort. No soul food hangover. The way to my heart, always has been and always will be, through my stomach. My food filled heart belongs to Chef Carla Hall. A+ to the Chef Carla Hall dining experience. Now, I can't speak on the usual Caldo Verde dining experience, but the ambience is lovely. A cute spot, once your inside. I didn't fancy their minty ginger-ale. It was a sugary sweet abomination, actually. And they have the drinkacity to charge 13 bucks for it. I have to recreate the idea of it, without the forest of sweetener they use to kill all traces of ginger and mint. This is not Chef Carla Hall's doing. This is a staple on the Caldo Verde menu. I'm not a big (alcohol) drinker and I wanted a refresher to cleanse the pallet before my next course. This thing almost took me out. I poured water into it ,to make it half drinkable. I was determined to drink this nonsense due to price. And didn't feel like being my usual persnickety self about my fine dining, because the food was most definitely fine dining. The finest of dining. It's a four rating because of the drink. It's a five for the food. I must add, on the strength of Suzanne Goin being attached to Caldo Verde, I have to go back and try the food. She used to have a spot called Lucques, on Melrose. I'd frequently scrape together my starving artist monies to delight in her Sunday Suppers. I miss that place. read more

Beautiful building and design. The hotel and dining room interiors are quite impressive, a bit dark but notable ambiance. There was no host when we walked in, while we stood around for a few minutes as the place seemed to be quite active. The cocktails were Latino influenced libations, pricey but balanced and presented well. We ordered apps, dinner, and dessert while nothing blew us away. The service was very mediocre. Honestly, we expected more with all the buzz... In the end, the highlight would be the drinks-expect to pay $23 a pop. While the Farro dish was tasty. I am curious about the rooftop bar with its views but I doubt we will be back. Alot of hype but nothing memorable. read more

Not being all too familiar with Portuguese cuisine, I was excited to dine at Caldo Verde. This was particularly true given the team behind the restaurant. My wife and I made evening reservations, though truthfully, there were plenty of available seats at the time. Upon entry, we immediately noticed the beautiful ceiling of the Proper Hotel lobby, and then the gorgeous dining space inside the restaurant. We were given a prime table, right next to the tall glass windows. Our server Joe was affable, gracious and knowledgeable about the menu. As with any new restaurant we try, we always quiz the server about what's new, what's popular, and any personal recommendations. After some back and forth, we decided on the Portuguese chopped salad, the maitakes + Bob's polenta, and ended with the caldo verde. Everything was fantastic, from presentation to taste. Beautiful restaurant. The cocktails were great and they even mixed a unique drink for one of us based on her specific taste for something sweet. Service contained to be excellent throughout our meal. We had brunch and ordered avocado toast, Portuguese chopped salad and the cornmeal waffle. What a taste experience with each dish. Just excellent. Even though we were stuffed we could not pass up dessert and had macchiato's with the creme puff. Again excellent. The four star average reviews for this restaurant are quite unbelievable to me. Cruel intentions at cara cara. Considering it was a Friday evening and too late for reservations we decided to wing it and try to grab a seat at cara cara rooftop bar. Bad idea. Host at hotel entrance shot us down and didn't even let us go up. Supposedly he put us on a list and after a few hours our name was never called. Met other patrons at Caldo Verde bar who did the same thing as us but they were called even after showing up later than us. That kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. But we made the most of it. Ended up having dinner and drinks at Caldo Verde. The service is top notch. Very friendly and knowledgeable bartenders. Especially Dasy who made amazing caipirinhas! For starters we shared prawns and shishitos peppers. The prawns were delicious. Well seasoned with an amazing sauce. For dinner we shared their piri piri chicken. More than enough for two people. Very tasty and perfectly cooked.All in all our experience at Caldo Verde was great. Would I go back? Probably not. In a flash... (actually a long drive), I arrived to the Proper Hotel, all decked out for meeting with my fabulous new friends for the evening. The valet, (only $14.00 for 1st 3 hrs), was so incredibly nice and accommodating that I was truly taken aback by how kind and nice everyone who worked in valet was... not typical for most places I took the elevator to the rooftop to scan for friends, especially Namir, but he had not arrived yet so I went back downstairs to Caldo Verde bar area which was as luxurious as could possibly be considering that its all Kelly Wearstler international acclaimed interior design everywhere.. While sitting at the bar, I ordered a champagne, it was fantastic... it was a penedes, raventos, brut rose and after having one glass I wanted another quickly, however, my new friends were starting to show up so I left the area to go back up to the rooftop... to Cara Cara... (more in another review....) Later on the same evening, a group of us were seated around a rather large table in the corner and just about every dish from the menu appeared there. There was so much to choose from that I proceeded to enjoy the feast while having great conversation. The dishes that were THE most EPIC and stole the show were: Bluenose + Fideos Piri Piri Chicken Maitakes + Bob's Polenta however, I can truly say that you can't go wrong with MOST of the items if not ALL of the items on the menu because you can't go wrong with celebrity chef Suzanne Goin. elegant with a minimum of pretense - that's a tough line to walk, but seemingly these folks have done it. the service was extremely attentive without being overbearing, which is also a tough balance. the ambiance was beautiful which should be self-evident from the photos. what i'm really here to talk about is that chopped salad - imagine you're a guy going about life and you feel compelled to talk to the internet about a salad. this is the level of deliciousness i'm talking about - there are only two salads i've ever eaten that were worth committing to memory and this was one. the prawns were also amazing. perhaps surprisingly, the venue's namesake, and also the most expensive dish on the menu, was not especially memorable to me - though surprisingly substantial, it was light on crab and its flavor was overshadowed by the aforementioned dishes. read more

Amazing place. It was a suggestion from a chef's friend to visit this DownTown local in the newly renovated Hotel Proper. The pace was inviting, and we joined for Sunday Brunch: the four of us had a jolly time. Yes, to friendly service, the food was surprisingly delicious, and the atmosphere was great. True to Argentina style. We crisscrossed the menu selection, and the item I'd least expected to impress was a sumptuous Avocado toast. Keep in mind, as a chef; we snicker about this item being a lazy mom's solution to feed three in five minutes... The serving we devoured was on a loaf of toasted, soft pumpernickel bread with sweet tomatoes, fresh herbs, radish, salsa, topping perfectly mashed avocados. The mushroom omelet was delicate; seriously fine!! My pup was welcome to join; even a doggy treat was offered! I'm still baffled why it tasted so good (the avocado toast, not the treat)! While the food was quite good (ricotta dumplings, hangar steak, patatas bravas were all delicious), the service was really poor. The pacing of the food was great by the kitchen and the runners, but the drink service by the waitstaff was so slow (more than 20 minutes to find out the bottle of wine we ordered was out of stock and another 20 minutes to get the bottle they actually had) and it took forever to get our check at the end of the night. read more

The staff and team were also top notch - providing attentive, curated service throughout the meal. While I sadly didn't get any photos, the waitress gave us some great recommendations of the courses we ordered. We began with the Portuguese chopped salad and continued with the bluenose and maitakes and polenta. All three dishes were delicious and thoughfully made. Just sat down and this menu is amazing. The "main chef" is a Beard award winner and there's lots of the usual characters here. The Chef in charge is making Portuguese fare. Don't you? Anyway, the toast is near burnt - so basically perfect and crispy. And with the gooey cheese, nuts and fruit... I've gone to heaven. But that's me. Lisette was - heck I'm not sure what her role was - call it concierge - just stopped by to ask if I had any questions. I'm being pampered. Loving.... While I'm enjoying this - you need some context- I'm solo. 5 hours at Universal Studio enjoying funnel cakes and my wife on her 60th is back at the Hoxton across the street. Ah well, this is how we roll after 41 birthdays... but I digress, back to Caldo... Jonathan has given me his thoughts but contrary to the "recommendations," I'm choosing Portuguese pork and beans. What can I say, it sounded amazing. Now I don't know about you but comfort food is a special thing. This dish is South American comfort food. Sausage and white beans. Maybe pinto. I don't know from beans. Hearty, rich and well, tasty. The sausage is bold as you'd expect but the beans and pork is succulent and Smokey. Hmm. Didn't expect that but what a welcome surprise! This is a little like Cajun gumbo: many complex flavors - but without the spice. David the AD of food stopped by to check in. Ok, so maybe I mentioned I was writing a review on Yelp.. but who am I? I was honored to dine with the Italian food authority, Katie Parla at an event for her new book. This is a Portuguese restaurant, and my first time coming to this establishment to dine on Italian food. The quality and presentation of Katie's dishes were impeccable. I was honored with one of the first dishes out of the kitchen, and the awe that fell on the room was clearly audible. What an experience. I think it would be cruel to comment on the special dishes served at this particular event since you may not be able to order it, so if you want an idea of what we inhaled, please check out Katie's book Food of the Italian Islands (I do not work for this person, I know of her from Eric Wareheim, and this is his go-to-gal, so this is everyone's go-to now, understand?) This space is beautiful, and there is even the option to dine on the terrace of the building. The waitstaff and management were the kindest and most professional individuals I've encountered in Los Angeles in a really long time. This place deserves your attention, if it didn't have it already. Thank you Ms. Parla, thank you Caldo Verde. You can make anyone, going through anything, smile for at least a few important moments. Seriously, everything about Mother's Day brunch at Caldo Verde was fantastic and it started with the lovely hostess and just kept getting better with the excellent service. The place has a casual cool vibe that's very inviting and the food did not disappoint -- but we knew it wouldn't. We are big fans of Suzanne Goin. So here's what we had: Salty Faves - yum. The perfect blend of iberico ham, aloreña olives and Spanish anchovies. Smoked Salmon - with lemon creme fraiche, avocado and potato cakes. Eggs cooked in tomato - with an amazing pesto. It came in a little cast iron skillet of goodness with grilled bread. We ordered more bread to finish it off. Peri Peri chicken - finger licking good! Grass fed burger - beyond juicy. We finished off brunch with a mother's day special dessert offering with small chocolate cakes, macarons, cookies, a special lemonade and small tarts. Oh, and the flan was the best I've ever had. Cannot say enough good things about Caldo Verde. We will be back again for dinner - and no doubt many times more. read more

Great food, great service, great decor, but UTTERLY unauthentic!... ...and that's why I can only give it two stars. TBH, it easily deserves a 4+ rating on face value for the overall experience, but as a natural-born Portuguese citizen excited about tasting some food from the homeland, I was sorely, deeply disappointed and even slightly insulted. Firstly, the creators of this restaurant seem to not know the difference between Portuguese and Spanish cultures, languages and cuisine, as many of the dishes have ingredients spelled in Spanish. The interior design is defined by a palette of soft earth tones and pastels and interesting textures but NOTHING in the decor even vaguely evokes the rich architectural and graphic form language or material character of Portugal, and they couldn't even be bothered to play some Fado or anything that could lend some legitimacy. Nope, they played Latin music...because maybe they think Portugal is in South America. And then there's the menu: only a dish or two seem to have some vague whiff of influence of Portuguese cuisine. The Lemon Chicken Paillard in the brunch menu comes close to emulating a simple Portuguese tradition, churrasco, which is broiled chicken and fried potatoes with piri piri seasonings, but why use a French word to describe a simple Portuguese dish? The most authentic aspect of this restaurant is its name, which translates roughly to 'green soup' or 'green broth', but they managed to even bastardize that concept. Caldo verde is an inexpensive staple of Portuguese cuisine, made with tender, almost sweet shredded kale and potato puree with a string of olive oil on top. It's often served with a few slices of chouriço, (not chorizo!) and a side of 'broa', a hearty, dense, cornmeal bread with a thick crust. It's found in just about every mom-n-pop cafe and restaurant in Portugal. Here however, Caldo Verde is used to describe a dish that uses local rock crab, grilled linguiça, kale, mussels and potato, and inexplicably costs $69!! Did the chef mean to offer a paella, which is Spanish? In summary, it's a good restaurant, just don't call it Portuguese anything. It's a gourmet fusion eatery with some Iberian inspirations. If you want a more authentic experience, try Barra Santos, also in LA or Natas, in Van Nuys. Harrumph, and good day! read more

We had: squid with chorizo (I didn't try but others liked); greens plate (good but not worth whatever the price was); almonds & olives & bread (delicious); mushrooms with polenta (a bit blander than expected but still yummy); roasted carrots (with pistachios & green harissa - un-freaking-believable!!!); sunchokes (delicious); burrata & artichoke (yummy); fish entree (very good, spicy); cocktails (inventive, tasty). My boyfriend and I stayed at the proper for a few days and found this to be an easy win for a delicious meal with low effort after long days of working. Over our stay we ate here for both breakfast and dinner. While dinner is great for a date, I preferred how quiet and intimate breakfasts were. Things We Ordered: Huevos Divorciados - delicious, would 100% get again Farmer's Eggs w. Bacon - delicious and super filling Most Simple Salad - good but overpriced Blood Orange + Cara Cara - delicious, one of my favorite things Prawns - decent Bread and Butter - decent Torta - absolutely wonderful Service was delightful every time we came and made it easy as a guest to come and go to any of their locations. I was invited by friends to Caldo Verde's "Sunday Supper" prix fixe a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed by this DTLA restaurant in the Proper Hotel. As a denizen of Hollywood, I rarely go Downtown, but this place is operated by Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne (of AOC and the now defunct Lucques), so its reputation precedes it and sparked my curiosity. I was not disappointed. It's a lovely space with views up neon-lit Broadway. Everyone from the valet, to the doorman, to the host at the entrance to the restaurant was super welcoming and helpful. Then our waiter, Steven, seated us and continued the friendly but professional service. He was very knowledgeable about the dishes (although this was a Sunday prix fixe and not the regular menu) and readily complied with a couple of small special requests from my European hosts, who were also very impressed with the exceptional service and the utterly delicious food. I plan to return for the regular menu, which promises several Portuguese-style dishes that I look forward to trying. read more

Brand new restaurant in the Proper hotel. The decor is nice and the service is pretty good, which was surprising for such a new restaurant. Rather limited menu but everything punches above its weight. I had the huevos divorciados which consisted of two perfectly fried eggs, 3 tortillas, black beans, and two kinds of salsa. The bean sauce and two salsas were freakin finger licking good. Had a side of bacon fried crispy and that was great as well. I tried my girlfriend's dish which was sweet potato hash with carnitas. I have had Caldo Verde for brunch and dinner. I wasn't a huge fan of their supper, but it was still tasty. First and foremost, they have a pretty good ambiance, despite the fact that the space isn't particularly large. I ordered their huevos and the portion was small; therefore, I believe they are overpricing; yet, it tasted excellent but did not fill my stomach. The eggs were cooked to perfection, although they could have been cooked a little less. Salad is also available, however, it is not entirely vegetarian. Then, for supper, I had the steak and mushroom, which were both excellent--about 4.5 stars. The portions were also quite large. The service was excellent and suitable. We stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant at the last minute on Mother's Day and aren't we glad! The place was packed but we lucked up and grabbed some seats at the bar, completely avoiding the long wait. Bartenders Daisy & Josue, were super friendly and gave us great service, a rare find these days. To start, I ordered the 'Americana' cocktail. It was as delicious, as it was beautiful! Since it was a Chef designed brunch menu, I went with the Grass Fed Burger and it did not disappoint; The sauce was magical and the meat was cooked perfectly. It was such a pretty burger, I had to give it a whole photo shoot before I ate it! lol For dessert, we shared the pistachio flan and my taste buds thanked me! I highly recommend the rooftop, if you want to impress your date l, friends or business associates - this is the spot. Came here for dinner on a whim, and we are so glad we did! From the ambiance, to the design, and most importantly, the food: everything was wonderful! We had the ceviche like dish, patatas bravas and the peri peri chicken. Delicious is an understatement. We also tried the chocolate cake dessert, also rich with flavor and depth. Truly divine. From the food, the service and the beauty of the restaurant, my experience was fantastic. My table ordered the carnitas and sweet potatoes, cornmeal waffle and smoked salmon and it was incredibly delicious. We had a few question about the menu and our server took the time to answer our questions. She was so nice. I look forward to trying other dishes. read more

De-lish. The Decor is inviting - the people welcoming - the Cocktails interesting and oh so tasty and the food? Oh the food is just yummy from the butter served with the bread to whatever coats those delicious string beans and peppers to the perfectly crispy, crunchy bits of the Patatas Bravas to the soft sweet and spicy pici pici chicken to the "oh no we don't want dessert" dessert that our spoons fought over for the last dribs. Excellent meal. Excellent Server who recommended just the right amount (I am so sorry forgot his name - last Sat around 6:30) Even really nice and polite Valets! What a gem! Food, service, ambiance was on point! It was our 2nd time there but our first time having dinner. I recommend their breakfast too, yummm the French Toast. For dinner we had the Caldo Verde and it was delish. You won't regret it, I promise. Everything we had was just really tasteful and just made your tummy feel good. We left feeling so good and couldn't stop talking about how good everything was. Our server, was great and really listened to what we were craving and very knowledgeable on the menu, so thank you Victor for being our server with the mostest! Experienced on a Saturday evening. Everything checked off in this place. Was greeted right away by friendly staff. Seated promptly, attentive and friendly wait service. Food was also prompt, beautifully presented, and delicious. We had the beet salad, patatas bravas, and caldo verde between the 2 of us. The first two were really delish. I've never had a caldo verde before so I'm not sure what it's supposed to taste like, and the broth tasted really clean, but I felt it lacked something. It was still good though, just would probably try something else next time. My dirty martini was perfect and my bf's whiskey cocktail was nice as well.
