Excellent little restaurant located within The Proper. This place has a great menu for breakfast and lunch and also has an excellent cocktail bar during the evening hours. Service is prompt and the food is delish!

Tried Cabrillo for the first time today. Every time I went to Cara Cara on the Rooftop of the Proper Hotel, I would peer into Cabrillo and I thought it looked so pretty so when we were trying to find a place to celebrate my sister's birthday, I suggested it. There were 8 of us and everyone enjoyed their dishes. The service was great and most of all, I loved the ambience. It is such a beautifully designed restaurant. We will definitely be back.

What a cute cafe! I loved their take on avocado toast! It was so fresh with all the fixings, I added smoked salmon for protein, the lattes are legit. Their hospitality is superb, our server was on top of everything, thank you!

Came here for brunch with friends on a very hot summer day and their AC saved the day (no issues with cooling the dining area at all). We made a reservation ahead of time but our table wasn't quite set up by the time we arrived. Though we were thankful for the waiting area. Service was pretty good. Our main server was attentive and would bring water for refills pretty frequently and was very friendly. Food: ***** loved the CARNITAS + SWEET POTATO -- delicious flavors of the super soft carnitas. Definitely wished it was a larger portion for $25. *** Bacon side - very salty but crunchy ***** Potatoes - very delicious, a nice balance of flavor but not too salty Restrooms: They're on the second floor - but you can definitely miss it as you exit the elevators bc it's SO dark in that hallway and the signs aren't marked brightly. Parking: They have valet, or you can find metered parking on Main Street which is just a block away (if you don't mind parking next to the tents/encampments)

Very nice place. Service was good. Mezze was an appetizer choice that was a big serving. Someone else in the group ordered the three meat appetizer and it was a great presentation. Caesarea pasta (creamy sauce - with mushrooms, beans, and kale) is a vegetarian dish that has so much flavor. I would order again. Food came out in segments, for our party of six.

Wow wow wow! This place is so beautiful! Def now one of my fav places to come to! And omggg some of the best foods i have tried. Their prawns are so delicious and a must try/get. Do yourself a favor and order a plate for yourself. You will not want to share! lol The flavors are insane & That sauce is ridiculous. I can't wait to go back! Salad was refreshing. Drinks were tasty. Parking: street metered parking/ parking structure next door/ valet ($). Reservations are recommended. They do have a speak easy and a rooftop that you must check out as well.

Great place to get some breakfast if you're staying at the Proper and have time to spare. I tired several things in the menu. Nothing disappointed. That being said, the dishes are not your typical breakfast dishes. So check out the menu before you go to make sure they have something you like. Also, don't go if you're in a rush. Every time I went it seemed to be very slow paced as far as seating and serving, even though there weren't many people there. The servers don't seem to be very attentive and were conversing with each other quite a bit (maybe training), but it's fine because it's all made up with the good food quality. The Egg Frittata was very tasty and cooked perfectly. I would probably prefer some kind of meat in it and would ask for the addition next time. The squash was very flavorful though. It's served in a cast iron skillet. To get some extra protein, I ordered a side of Greek yogurt (which is plain) and a side of fruit to add some depth to the flavor. It was a good choice because the plain yogurt was very bland (as expected). It took a while for them to make the dish (probably around 15 min), which I thought was a little odd. I also tried the Scottish Oatmeal with berries and it was good. A stark contrast to the frittata, the oatmeal came out in just a minute or two! The honey butter was a nice addition and they serve it with milk on the side if you prefer your oatmeal with it. The fruit here was very fresh, but not the ripest at times. There were a few sour pieces that I got both days I had it, but that's kinda how fruit goes. The Fireball Shot has some kick to it! Very spicy, so watch out if you're not used to ginger/turmeric/cayenne/pepper shots. I ordered this each time I went because I enjoyed the burn. Overall, great dishes (while not typical American breakfast fare) and I'm sure I would enjoy every item on the menu.

Caldo Verde is the Downtown LA Proper Hotel's flagship ground floor restaurant helmed by famed chef Suzanne Goin and her restaurateur business partner Caroline Styne. They also oversee the hotel's rooftop outdoor restaurant/bar Cara Cara and the intimate cocktail and afternoon tea lounge Dahlia. This DTLA hotel-restaurant relationship appears to be going swimmingly, much better than that at the Santa Monica Proper (regarding Jessica Koslow). Caldo offers a Portuguese/Mediterranean/California fusion menu in a beautiful and airy space. The restaurant also hosts a Guest Chef/Cookbook Dinner event every month or so, where a guest chef, usually in conjunction with their new or existing cookbook, offers a unique one-night-only multi-course prix-fixe menu. Signed cookbooks are available during these dinners courtesy of Now Serving, a bookstore in Chinatown specializing in cookbooks. Having stayed at The Proper a number of times, usually in conjunction with a Cookbook Dinner (the hotel offers a discounted rate for diners who elect to stay overnight), I have also eaten at Caldo numerous times, not just for the special dinners but off their regular dinner menu as well as for breakfast and Proper Hour (Happy Hour). Fairly recently, the Destination Amenity fee charged to hotel guests translates into a $50 food and beverage credit at Caldo or in-room-dining. Caldo's breakfast menu is not inexpensive, but fresh and diverse. The omelet option has changed ingredients over time but is always a good choice. For Proper Hour, I recommend the mango paloma and crab tostadas. And for dinner, you can't go wrong with their signature Caldo Verde, a Portuguese seafood stew with linguica sausage and potatoes. The cookbook dinners I've experienced have run the gamut from Southern (Carla Hall) to elevated sandwiches (Mason Hereford) to a Zuni Cafe tribute (OG Alice Waters was present!) to the cookie that changed (another OG) Nancy Silverton's life. The most recent dinner was not chef-driven, but was a showcase of Westholme Wagyu beef from Australia. I've caught glimpses of chef Suzanne, but she is not one to schmooze with guests. Ms. Styne, however affably makes her way around the front of the house. The table next to me took a photo with her, thinking she was Suzanne, but I did not correct them. Shout outs also to my regular waiter Steven and hostess Oksana. And kudos to the pastry chef Irene. I'll be missing the next dinner (Le Sud, recipes from southern France) because I'll be in New York trying to achieve the impossible dream of securing a table at Tatiana by Kwame Onwuachi.

I was not too hungry but ordered the avocado toast with a Cab. lots of options at this hotel all a little different but nice the hours vary. Nice relaxing vibes. The bartenders were nice and informative to question.

    Matcha chia seed pudding
    Anh N.

Super cute place for breakfast and brunch. If you have time to spare, come here and enjoy the decor. I've had a handful of things from their menu, and the repeats for me are the matcha chia pudding and diosa verde smoothie. Here are my thoughts on the dishes I tried: 1) Smoked Salmon - Beautiful and tasty. I liked the base of johnny cake, because it gave the dish a bit of a sweet flavor. It was a good blend of sweet and salty. I prefer this construction to Republique's smoke salmon over a potato pancake. Potato + salmon = too salty for me. 2) Carnitas and sweet potato hash - I enjoyed the flavoring of this dish as well. The poached egg and avocado can be a tad rich, but I liked the spices on the hash. 3) Matcha chia pudding - I loved the layers and the coconuty flavor of this pudding. It's a good blend of sweet, but you can still really taste the matcha. 4) Diosa Verde smoothie - Almond butter and chia seeds make this smoothie so filling! I like the mild banana flavor.

The ambiance is amazing the moment you walk through the door. Moody lighting and overall great interior vibes. Wine selection and other beverages are great. The server was great and recommended a better wine than the one I selected (he knew I wanted more of a full body red). We ordered the fruit and cheese plate to start, the cheeses were exquisite, as were the cherry preserves. There were intentions to order more than one entree off of the menu, BUT, we had to order the Caldo Verde (duh). It was beautiful, full of comfort and nostalgia. It brought me back to being a child on a cold winter night, enjoying a bowl of stew. The richness and depth of the broth with the potatoes was delightful. Let's not forget that this also has. A fine selection of seafood, which was very fresh and amazing as well! Bottom line... Plan your next trip to LA or your next date night downtown if you're local, and make a stop at Caldo Verde!

Came for Christmas dinner and it was my first time there. I was concerned that with it being a holiday, we would have subpar service and experience but I was way wrong! It was perfection. The restaurant is located on the first floor of a hotel. The waiting lounge was cozy and elegant. The valet and front desk were all super nice and kind. Very attentive. We had a large party but our server was very patient and provided so much knowledge on the menu. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and omg so delicious!! I could've ordered two more! My main dish was the steak and also perfectly cooked at medium rare. Great flavor. Great size to share too. My martini was also delicious. I really enjoyed it all and would love to come back.

High ceilings, Natural lighting, classy decor, comfy couches... Yeah, take your time with that room, we'll wait! Looking back at the Photos, I can't exactly recall what we ordered... Was it a whiskey sour? Was it a paper plane?? Honestly, Who cares! They tasted great. After being seated 40 minutes later, service took 20 minutes to take our order, and another 30 minutes to be served. Food was 'okay', there was no entertainment, and multiple customers were unhappy with similar slow service... but some of them were comped parts of their meals.. we didn't even get a sorry until we spoke to the manager on our way out, expressing the reason was they had no idea it would be this busy on a Thursday (they take reservations, so...), and also blamed an 'all you can eat promotion' they promoted earlier, and they only had two serves on staff that night. 4) We were late to Mr. Wanderlust, but were luck to get two seats at the bar after another couple left. We order two cocktails and a coffee... and were charged just over $140. Then, we were asked to move because they wanted to take our seats. We asked about the bill to the bartendar, and she expressed that since she didn't take our original order, she couldn't help us. She simply just had us stand there. We were not going to pay since it seemed way off... until finally we spoke to a guy walking by. We showed him our ticket/receipt and said out loud, "this isn't right". He came back quickly with a revised bill of almost $120. This was still far too high, but no one else seemed interested in helping us find resolve, so we ate it since we didn't want to be late for part 3 of the night. 5) Hoping to salvage the night with drinks and dancing... we tried to find the entrance to Sinners and Santos for their advertised Latin night. We had made reservations here too, and had full confirmation of the reservation... BUT, after finally being directed to the entrance (outside on the patio), they were closed. No sign of why and no one who worked at the other locations had a reason, but they were just simply closed. 6) So, after paying $35 for parking, about $140 in cocktails and food while waiting for our initial reservation at Golden Hour and Que Barbaro, $150+ for dinner at Lucky Mizu, and $120 at Mr. Wanderlust... approximately $500 total... we didn't even get to dance. Maybe this place had a bad night, but based on what the workers said, and how they treated us... it sure seems like the norm. Don't get me wrong, the place is cool... some really great experiential elements and nice photo ops... but I would have had a much better time somewhere else. Super disappointed in this place.

On another night, I go for Happy Hour and a few pints of Guinness on draft that are surprisingly proper and go well with their excellent and, I'm told, homemade Hummus & Veggies Plate. The music at this current Library Bar is pretty much on point and is never so loud as to interfere with the conversations that patrons seem to come here for... something you should come here for too, and maybe at Happy Hour specifically if you're looking for a nice bump in your day and to spend an hour, well, happily.

I finally was able to check it off, thanks to a hotel offer with a dining credit. Dahlia is the gorgeous petite space behind the larger ground floor restaurant space now called Cabrillo (formerly Caldo Verde). Dahlia opened as a bespoke cocktail lounge, then began to offer tea. Now it's just tea. There are five 2-tops and two 4-top tables. All food and beverage venues at the Proper used to be under the auspices of famed chef Suzanne Goin and her business partner/sommelier Caroline Styne. They are no longer affiliated with the Proper, but many of their dishes/contributions remain. The last named vestige of them is on the tea menu, "Suzanne's Deviled-Egg Sandwich". The tea menu has several options: Classic, with a seasonal mocktail, or with different champagnes. I opted for the Classic experience, because the mocktail had mocha, not my fave. Server Lluvia was clearly a Dahlia veteran; she offered a tea-smelling of all the teas that interested me as well as crowd favourites. I ultimately chose one of these faves, Mad Hatter's Tea Party, which had passionfruit and vanilla. I declined milk/cream, but did get lemon. There were rock sugar sticks on the table. It seems the selection of tea sandwiches and sweet treats changes every so often, although the vanilla bean scone, dried currant scone, Devonshire cream and apricot orange jam seem like constants. The sandwich selection at my visit were: cucumber, crab/creme fraiche, beet hummus on pita, smoked salmon and Suzanne's deviled egg. All were delish, the beet, crab and deviled egg especially. The sweet treats were: orange fig butter cookie, spiced apple brown butter crumble, cranberry frangipane hand pie, chocolate mocha macaron, pumpkin madeleine, plus the 2 scones. All were excellent. There were no leftovers. A bit pricey, but a relaxing and lovely experience. The room was not crowded when I visited, adding to the calmness of my visit.

It's not surprising given the neighborhood and decor, but I think they lean towards more Japanese spirits and beers. For someone like me who's never been to Japan I feel like there's a traditional Japanese theme going on inside with lots of wood. A few friends and I came here on a holiday before dinner. Happy hour specials were still going on. I'm not sure if they thought they were gonna get that much business on a holiday but I think there's only maybe one or two people behind the bar. Since it was early when we got there, it was still not that crowded. I got the special which was a shot of Japanese whisky and a beer. Great price! Haha. I've walked by before where this place is really crowded so I assume there's a lot more people working behind the bar during the regular busy hours. Just a great place to grab drink drinks.

No exceptions, as I witnessed a family who really wanted to come in but had an 18 yr old so they weren't allowed in and because they had a minor with them they couldn't even sit outside in their seating area. Always good to know. Inside the bar got super busy. The inside was a bit dark but again it is a bar. I like the decor and the bar seating was packed. The drinks were good if you like whiskey they have it along with lists of beer options. Nice spot to try out.

My girlfriend and I ordered two Old Fashioneds made with Ilegal Mezcal. The bottle being used was nearly empty, and as professionals in the hospitality industry, we are very familiar with proper pour standards. It was clear there wasn't enough product left for two consistent drinks. The bartender, Bryan, prepared both cocktails without using a jigger. When I politely asked why one drink appeared noticeably lighter than the other and why he wasn't measuring the pour, he smirked, gave a slight laugh, and responded that he "knows the exact measurement of his glasses." The tone and gesture felt dismissive and mocking rather than professional. Instead of addressing a reasonable concern with transparency, the response came across as defensive and condescending. To make matters worse, a 20% gratuity was automatically added, bringing the total to $71.12 for two inconsistent Old Fashioneds. Precision, consistency, and respect are basic standards in this industry. Unfortunately, this experience did not reflect that. We won't be returning.

A group of my friends and I have come here three different times, really wanting to like this place because the atmosphere is beautiful and lively. Unfortunately, each visit has been consistently disappointing due to the same bartender--a shorter male with visible tattoos and facial hair, who seems to regularly work one side of the bar. On all three occasions, we experienced being ignored while trying to order, even as other guests who arrived after us were served first. The first time, we were eventually told "you guys can wait" in a rude tone of voice while he continued taking other orders. The second time, we were never helped at all and had to move to another part of the bar, where a female bartender provided much better service. The third visit was the most concerning. When we tried to get his attention, he responded in a dismissive and rude tone, and as he walked away, we overheard him make an inappropriate comment about us under his breath calling us out of our name and we felt very disrespected so much so that we just left. We completely understand that weekends can get busy, but consistently dismissive and disrespectful service--especially across multiple visits--is not acceptable and we've also seen him be rude to other guests as well. Aside from this issue, the venue itself is great, which is why we gave it multiple chances. I really hope management can address this, as it impacts the overall appearance and experience of the establishment. Thank you.
