During my most recent stay (the latest of many) at the DTLA Proper hotel, I enjoyed breakfast for the first time at Cabrillo, their ground floor restaurant. Mind you, I have enjoyed many a meal in this gorgeous space in the past, when it was the hotel's signature all-day restaurant named Caldo Verde from chef Suzanne Goin. With her departure, the space got a new name, revamped menu, and now just serves breakfast. Other meals can be had on-site at the rooftop Cara Cara. My last meal at Cabrillo was actually last fall during a rainy spell when the Cara Cara menu was being served here due to the weather. I recognized my server, Carlitos, who has been with the restaurant since the hotel opened. The menu was and still is a bit bougie, certainly not your "basic diner" or prefab Holiday Inn Express breakfast buffet. I ordered the Proper Breakfast--eggs, potatoes or tomatoes, an arugula salad and toast--and it was very good. Note there is only one omelette choice (oyster mushroom), and not every egg dish comes with potatoes and/or toast. The pecan sticky bun I've had in the past is also nice. Service was a bit sparse at first because they were setting up for an event in the Dahlia space. Overall a fine and convenient breakfast choice, especially for hotel guests. Other nearby options are Moonlark's Dinette at the Hoxton Hotel across the street, and Pine and Crane, a Taiwanese spot that's a fave of mine for any meal. read more

The food quality is not so stable. We ate here for two mornings, the first day the food was good but second day the food was a bit disappointing. Açaí bowl was perfect the first day but second day it was watery. We had to send it back to the kitchen. I was staying at a neighboring hotel and decided to go to Cabrillo for breakfast after seeing the reviews. And I was not disappointed. I got a seat immediately after I arrived. The service was pretty good. I ordered oyster mushroom omellette, which is rarely found anywhere else, and toast. The food came pretty quickly and was awesome. The omelette had just the right amount of oyster mushroom. The toast, somehow, was extremely tasty. The food was plentiful as well. I took some of the toast with me and ate later in the day. The total bill was somewhat on the high side (at about $40), but I thought that the food was worth it. I would gladly go back there again. read more

During my visit, I tried the PROPER BREAKFAST from their menu, which offered a satisfying start to the day. The spot also has a tasty selection of pastries, fresh smoothies, and coffee beverages--all ideal for a leisurely morning meal. However, the service was a disappointment. Despite only a handful of guests at that early hour, the server was inattentive and didn't once check on my table or offer to refill coffee or water, which took away from the overall experience. Tried Cabrillo for the first time today. Every time I went to Cara Cara on the Rooftop of the Proper Hotel, I would peer into Cabrillo and I thought it looked so pretty so when we were trying to find a place to celebrate my sister's birthday, I suggested it. Had a delightful morning breakfast as Caldo Verde. we got $60 credit daily bfast credit as part of the Cap1 Venture X benefit when you stay at the hotel hence why we chose this place. Came around 9am during LBW and only 3 tables with 3 waiters around. Service was awful because none of the waiters were attentive, they were talking to each other in the corners and i even saw one of the lady from another table had to approach the waiter to request for something. Food was awful and super pricey for the portion. The omelette was $26 and it was super bland, came with salad on the side and my goodness it was super salty and sour, just awful overall. they automatically charge 6% additional on your final bill as part of "wellness charge" (please look it up, its common around LA restaurants) and in addition to that they expect additional 18-20% tips, even with the poor, awful service. read more

I've had a handful of things from their menu, and the repeats for me are the matcha chia pudding and diosa verde smoothie. Here are my thoughts on the dishes I tried: 1) Smoked Salmon - Beautiful and tasty. I liked the base of johnny cake, because it gave the dish a bit of a sweet flavor. It was a good blend of sweet and salty. I prefer this construction to Republique's smoke salmon over a potato pancake. Potato + salmon = too salty for me. 2) Carnitas and sweet potato hash - I enjoyed the flavoring of this dish as well. The poached egg and avocado can be a tad rich, but I liked the spices on the hash. 3) Matcha chia pudding - I loved the layers and the coconuty flavor of this pudding. It's a good blend of sweet, but you can still really taste the matcha. 4) Diosa Verde smoothie - Almond butter and chia seeds make this smoothie so filling! I like the mild banana flavor. read more

The ambiance is amazing the moment you walk through the door. Moody lighting and overall great interior vibes. Wine selection and other beverages are great. The server was great and recommended a better wine than the one I selected (he knew I wanted more of a full body red). There were intentions to order more than one entree off of the menu, BUT, we had to order the Caldo Verde (duh). It was beautiful, full of comfort and nostalgia. Great place to get some breakfast if you're staying at the Proper and have time to spare. I tired several things in the menu. Nothing disappointed. That being said, the dishes are not your typical breakfast dishes. So check out the menu before you go to make sure they have something you like. Also, don't go if you're in a rush. Every time I went it seemed to be very slow paced as far as seating and serving, even though there weren't many people there. The servers don't seem to be very attentive and were conversing with each other quite a bit (maybe training), but it's fine because it's all made up with the good food quality. The Egg Frittata was very tasty and cooked perfectly. I would probably prefer some kind of meat in it and would ask for the addition next time. The squash was very flavorful though. It's served in a cast iron skillet. To get some extra protein, I ordered a side of Greek yogurt (which is plain) and a side of fruit to add some depth to the flavor. It was a good choice because the plain yogurt was very bland (as expected). It took a while for them to make the dish (probably around 15 min), which I thought was a little odd. I also tried the Scottish Oatmeal with berries and it was good. A stark contrast to the frittata, the oatmeal came out in just a minute or two! The honey butter was a nice addition and they serve it with milk on the side if you prefer your oatmeal with it. The fruit here was very fresh, but not the ripest at times. There were a few sour pieces that I got both days I had it, but that's kinda how fruit goes. The Fireball Shot has some kick to it! Very spicy, so watch out if you're not used to ginger/turmeric/cayenne/pepper shots. I ordered this each time I went because I enjoyed the burn. Overall, great dishes (while not typical American breakfast fare) and I'm sure I would enjoy every item on the menu. read more

Came for Christmas dinner and it was my first time there. I was concerned that with it being a holiday, we would have subpar service and experience but I was way wrong! It was perfection. The restaurant is located on the first floor of a hotel. The waiting lounge was cozy and elegant. The valet and front desk were all super nice and kind. Very attentive. Ngl, I had some reservations about here because you know, hotel restaurants. Caldo Verde is the restaurant located on the bottom floor of the Proper Hotel. We opted to dine outside because the weather was nice, but it was a bit noisy being so close to the street, so that's something to keep in mind. I loved my huevos divorciados ($18). Huevos divorciados have two types of chilis, black beans, queso fresco and tortillas topped with two eggs. Presentation wise, it's kinda pretty because everything just kind of chills on a plate, but it tasted better than it looked. Functionally, the tortillas aren't meant to wrap anything up, but instead, you just tear into them with your knife and fork as you make yourself a bite. They're simmered in some kind of fat because man were these tasty. I also had bites of the carnitas and sweet potato hash ($25) and this dish was tasty as well. Piri piri fries ($9) for the table and this was an almost perfect brunch. Caldo Verde is on the pricier side hence the almost perfect brunch. My gal pal and I came here for one of the events held by NowServingLA for this culinary author's book debut called First Generation. We had a reservation for 8:30 but wasn't seated until we checked again after 40 mins of waiting. We were greeted with dessert right away, which was interesting. We ordered everything to share: grilled snapper, baby back ribs, Caesar salad w/pickles & an open faced bao stuffed with delicious bbq beef. Portions were good enough for us to bring the rest to-go. In comparison to our experience at Cara Cara, our brunch visit at Caldo Verde left us on a disappointing note on our last morning at Proper Hotel. - PARKING - Valet parking is available at the hotel, although public parking nearby is much cheaper. - SERVICE - When we arrived, we were told by the hostess it would only be 5-10 minutes to wait. There were several tables open and available, so we believed it. As time went on, we weren't given an update at all but overheard the hostess say to other guests that wanted to dine in that the kitchen was backed up, so the wait would be longer. I understand there are reservations so a larger party went ahead of us, but there was another 2 person party that came after us and they were seated before we were! By that time we had already waited 30 minutes, so we were pretty upset about that. When we got seated, it wasn't to a very comfortable table either. We were hungry so we still stayed and ordered. Food came out not too long after ordering which we were glad about. - FOOD - Farmers Eggs ($17.00): Standard breakfast plate with Eggs, Greens, Bread and Potatoes. We asked if the Potatoes could be prepared in the Patatas Bravas fashion, and they obliged. The Potatoes were definitely my favorite part of the dish, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The Greens were a bit bitter unfortunately. French Toast ($19.00): We were quite excited for this as we love French Toast, and they had Mascarpone as part of it! The presentation was beautiful, and the first bites on the edges were delicious... until we got to the center. The center was COMPLETELY RAW, with the custard/egg mixture still soggying up the bread. It was inedible at that point, which soured the meal experience even more. The hostess did end up taking it off the bill, but at that point we were just not happy with the entire experience. - OVERALL - Not sure if they had several hiccups this single time we went, or if Cara Cara is just the better option between the two for this Hotel. read more

Lower than Cara Cara in the same Proper Hotel but higher on the food scale. While there is not the spectacular city view, the food was spectacular in itself. The staff provided excellent guidance. Everything we ordered in tapas style to share was incredibly delicious, a great spectrum of full flavors and decent spiciness. My favorite was the "Chanterelles and Bob's polenta" and the Piri Piri chicken. But other items like Leeks burrata, Prawns, Patatas bravas, or Roasted carrots were outstanding. Speaking of ...standing or sitting, some of the chairs look nice but are unbearable to sit on the whole evening. Before I tuck myself to sleep - I had to write this review while my tastebuds are freshly reminiscing dinner a few short hours ago. Taking a short trip to Los Angeles from the Bay and was fortunate enough to enjoy dinner at Caldo Verde. We are fortunate to catch their fall menu and very much delighted with everything we ate! We started with the small plate of salty favorites and just as it is named on the menu, it is a favorite! The iberico ham and chorizo were definitely the show stoppers of the plate! We then paired it with Three Portuguese Cheeses - and the Estrela, ugh - absolutely divine!! Every cheese paired deliciously with the dates, apricots tomato jam and bread! We moved on with shishito peppers and string beans, and they were a happy couple on a plate - peppers not spicy and string beans with bite still on them, the bite is always well desired with string beans and they came with a black mole aoli that I wish I could buy a bottle of and have at home! Of course we got patatas bravas because, potatoes are always a comfort starch and we had the spiced tomato on the side, and that was great for the kiddos! Now for our proteins, squid... Not just any squid - CHORIZO STUFFED SQUID!! It came on top a bed of mustard greens and that first bite was pretty intense! I'd never imagined that chorizo in a squid was the kind of surfnturf I'd ever be able to partake, it was unique and an enjoyable moment for our table. Up next was of course - the prawns! The bread absorbing the sauce and having it in a bite with the prawns... Just an absolute delight to have. Now. The showstopper of the evening was the epic Spiny Lobster dish. OMG. I have never had lobster that was cooked to perfection like that, full of meat from the head to the tail. It was then topped with a tomato sauce that I could slather on every dish during that meal! The lobster dish was the star of the night for us, we all were able to enjoy a sizeable amount and even after the meat was gone, we continued to dip our bread into the tomato. Don't skip out on the lobster y'all!!! Overall, this was such a divine and delicious meal, taking place in a beautiful setting with kind hosts and wonderful service. I was please to find this restaurant a new flavor in the downtown area. Located below the Proper Hotel. First impressions are everything for me.. I was greeted and waiter and waitress checking on me periodically to make sure I had what I needed. Very Pet friendly ! I was offered doggie treats for my Lucy and she was very happy and they gave her five star treatment with several bowls of water I ordered a side of for me and Lucy to share since it was her Birthday! I loved how the staff made my dog feel comfortable and taken care of before I placed my order. I ordered Huevos Divorciados .. I loved the flavors of this dish .. a lot going on the palette. From the decor to the vibes and the food, this place made for a great Saturday night. This restaurant is located inside the Proper Hotel which is a beautiful hotel within itself. What an amazing feast we had at Caldo Verde. I had a chance to try the portuguese chopped salad, three portuguese cheese, piri piri chicken, caldo verde, weiser melons + nectarines, a grilled fish (name escapes me) and a pistachio flan to wrap up the evening. The salad was delicious! It was refreshing and definitely set me up for the rest of the night. To start off, I tried their Purple Mariposa as I'm a sucker for all anything with egg whites in my cocktails. Presentation and taste was fabulous. It contained pea flower vodka, lemon, simple syrup and vegan egg white. Our table ordered family style to try a little bit of everything. We went crazy and ordered the following: -Three Portuguese Cheese (THE BEST EVER) -Bluenose + Fideos - Oh my? The best fish dish on the menu. Perfectly seasoned and that garlic aioli amplified the flavors. -Piri Piri Chicken - A dish you can't go wrong. Arugula and lemon on the side blended this dish harmoniously. -Maitakes + Bob's Polenta -Caldo Verde -Flan Presentation was stunning. Every dish was delicious and overall, one of the best evenings was spent here with friends. It's good to be back in DTLA for the dining scene after COVID and is a place that shouldn't be missed. Opened in October 2021 by legendary restaurant duo Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne, Caldo Verde offers a sublime immersion into Portuguese-Spanish-Californian cuisine! An innovative menu + unique wine list + beautiful Kelly Wearstler-designed space + impeccable hospitality + convivial company = a memorable evening! As a longtime regular at two other Goin-Styne restaurants, when Yelp Elite member Namir reached out with a group dinner invitation, I was happy to join. A very special thanks also to Suzanne Goin, Food and Beverage Director David Eaton, and the entire team at Caldo Verde! We will be back soon! AMBIENCE (5/5) Comprising the ground-floor centerpiece of DTLA's Proper Hotel, Caldo Verde fuses elements of Moroccan, European, and Mexican design for an environment that feels refreshing, inviting, and chic. Tables are well-spaced, and the bar is beautiful! FOOD (5/5) Talk about a feast for the senses! While our group sampled nearly every dish on the menu, top highlights included: Three Portuguese Cheeses: yum! A lovely grazing plate with flavorful cheeses, nuts, apricots, and grilled bread. Weiser Melons + Nectarines: I am not typically a huge melon fan, but the slices of cantaloupe, honeydew, and stone fruit were deliciously sweet! A perfect summer palate opener. Portuguese Chopped Salad: this savory + sweet dish, which included chorizo, São Jorge cheese, and greens, quickly shone as a group favorite. Piri Piri Chicken: beautifully presented with crisp French fries and greens, the chicken was incredibly flavorful and tender. Quite possibly our group's favorite dish! Grilled Flat Iron Steak: juicy sliced steak with chickpeas and tapenade - yummy! Duck Breast: tender sliced duck + crab apple mostada. A solid win! Caldo Verde: the restaurant's namesake stew, this popular Portuguese soup arrived packed with rock crab, mussels, grilled sausage, potatoes, and kale. In the inimitable words of a delighted US Southerner guest, "It tastes like an extra fancy Low Country boil!" Dessert Sampler Trio: pistachio flan + fruit crostada a la mode + blueberry truffles were all divine! A perfect cap to a stimulating evening! Wines: a special call out for master sommelier Caroline Styne's wine list is a must! Both the alvarinho and tempranillo were delightful! I'm a fan of vinho verde and related styles, and Caldo Verde is the only restaurant I've come across in LA that offers both albariño and alvarinho. SERVICE (5/5) WOW! Especially given the severe labor shortages that restaurants have been facing, the Caldo Verde team was flawless! David was *enormously* gracious and thoughtful, and every single staff member was friendly and attentive. RUN, don't walk, to Caldo Verde for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and/or dinner!
