Excellent food and experience! The staff was super nice and we felt like it was a true hidden gem. They knew it was my friend's birthday so made a special effort to wish her a happy birthday and include a candle on top of one of the pastries. The DTLA Proper Hotel is beautifully designed by Kelly Wearstler, a former athletic faciliity. Although I've done several staycations here, tea at Dahlia remained on my bucket list of experiences, since it's only offered on weekends. I finally was able to check it off, thanks to a hotel offer with a dining credit. Dahlia is the gorgeous petite space behind the larger ground floor restaurant space now called Cabrillo (formerly Caldo Verde). Dahlia opened as a bespoke cocktail lounge, then began to offer tea. Now it's just tea. There are five 2-tops and two 4-top tables. All food and beverage venues at the Proper used to be under the auspices of famed chef Suzanne Goin and her business partner/sommelier Caroline Styne. They are no longer affiliated with the Proper, but many of their dishes/contributions remain. The last named vestige of them is on the tea menu, "Suzanne's Deviled-Egg Sandwich". The tea menu has several options: Classic, with a seasonal mocktail, or with different champagnes. I opted for the Classic experience, because the mocktail had mocha, not my fave. Server Lluvia was clearly a Dahlia veteran; she offered a tea-smelling of all the teas that interested me as well as crowd favourites. I ultimately chose one of these faves, Mad Hatter's Tea Party, which had passionfruit and vanilla. I declined milk/cream, but did get lemon. There were rock sugar sticks on the table. It seems the selection of tea sandwiches and sweet treats changes every so often, although the vanilla bean scone, dried currant scone, Devonshire cream and apricot orange jam seem like constants. The sandwich selection at my visit were: cucumber, crab/creme fraiche, beet hummus on pita, smoked salmon and Suzanne's deviled egg. All were delish, the beet, crab and deviled egg especially. The sweet treats were: orange fig butter cookie, spiced apple brown butter crumble, cranberry frangipane hand pie, chocolate mocha macaron, pumpkin madeleine, plus the 2 scones. All were excellent. There were no leftovers. A bit pricey, but a relaxing and lovely experience. The room was not crowded when I visited, adding to the calmness of my visit. read more

Came here to celebrate my birthday and it was absolute perfection. From planning and coordinating to the day of the attention to detail and care from the team was amazing. When booking the spot, all my questions were promptly addressed via email and calls. The Proper Hotel is stunning and Dahlia is another layer of it. The ambiance and decor was aesthetic with beautiful lighting and art. My party of 7 had the space to ourselves for majority of the time and only shared the space with two others towards the end. As for parking, they do offer valet, though no validation. Theres also a few lots walking distance. It was a modern tea experience and the tea selection was incredible. Many of us were conflicted on which we wanted just from the description but Lluvia guided us through the tea selections, letting us get a whiff and giving us insight into the offerings which was a lovely experience. It helped many of us finalize our decision. Lluvia's knowledge and passion for tea was absolutely inspiring. She was our server for the day and her attention to detail and sweet personality really did elevate the experience to another level. A few of us paid the additional fee to add on the Laurent-Perrier Rosé Champagne and it was beautifully colored, delicious, and well worth it! The tea tower was beautifully composed and the flavors were such a delight. Visually stunning & just as appetizing with a wonderful assortment. A few of my favorite tea sandwiches would have to be the smoked salmon (Lemon Crème Fraîche, Aleppo) and the Artichoke Hummus (Maitake Mushroom, Cilantro Pistou, Aleppo). The dried currant scone and blueberry pistachio tart are also honorable mentions! Had such a memorable and wonderful experience that I got to share with my friends. Came here to celebrate my sister's 30th birthday with some tea! We had a group of 7 and we were seated in a separate room. I love the interior of this spot and it was aesthetic. We started with a tea smelling where we got to smell the different tea leaves from the menu. I loved this experience because it definitely helped me decide on which tea I wanted. For my tea experience, I chose the Himalayan tea. It was rich in flavor with scents of floral. We each got our own pot of tea and were able to get more refills of hot water. I ordered the vegan menu (menu attached). I loved the vanilla bean scone, avocado bruschetta, cucumber basil, and the yuzu madeleine. Huge thanks to Uvia who made this a very fun experience for us! If you're looking for a gorgeous and unique afternoon tea I can't recommend Dahlia more highly. My sister and I came for the winter tea. Firstly, the restaurant is impeccably designed. So many beautiful colors and textures and the tea room feels cozy and intimate yet luxurious. I love that you get to smell the teas before making your selection and they were seasonal curations. I got the gingerbread black tea, and my sister got the apple pie green tea. Both were absolutely delicious. Our server Lluvia was so friendly and attentive and made the whole experience feel extra special. Both the vanilla, and black currant scones were incredible. Crispy on the outside, almost like a donut, and fluffy and light on the inside. The accompanying jam and Devonshire cream were the perfect accompaniments. I loved the variety of the savory bites which were all delicious especially the cucumber, and egg sandwiches. The seasonal patisserie selection really knocked it out of the park. They steal your money!! I reserved on open table for a Mother's Day brunch tea experience here. I was charged $170. When I dined, I was told this would be refunded as I placed my card down and was billed $197 for the brunch tea experience. It has been over a week and I have spoken to TWO representatives and was told my information was taken and the $170 will be refunded immediately. I now have to inconvenience myself to make my way downtown and try to reach someone IN PERSON. This was barely worth $200, let alone a double charge to nearly $400 for two pots of tea and some tiny sandwiches. I am SO DISAPPOINTED in what was supposed to be a lovely Mother's Day treat for families. I was sorely mistaken by what seemed to be a high caliber establishment. I love a good afternoon tea so when I saw the afternoon tea here, I decided to give it a try. It's very easy to find parking downtown. There are lots everywhere and several very close by. The lobby is very small and gets crowded easily. As soon as you enter, the restaurant is to the left. We were seated in a small waiting area i. the restaurant. The coffee table in the seating area was dirty with lots of crumbs and dried up spills. My first impression being a dirty table had me worried. We sat in the area for a couple of minutes then we were taken back to the beautiful tea room as far as tea rooms go. This is one of the most gorgeous I've been in here in the Los Angeles area. Service was great. they really take their time and don't rush you at all. I appreciated their unique tea selection. I had the mad hatter tea and it was very unique. I really enjoyed the fruity bouquet the tea presented. I wasn't a huge fan of the rock candy stir sticks. They're cute and a good concept, but it's hard to use on multiple cups of tea and doesn't get the flavor where you want to be all the time. The food was good, but there were two things that stood out for me that had the most flavor. The first was the prosciutto and radish on pumpernickel. This was one of the most delicious small bites. Normally I don't go for restaurants inside the hotel I'm staying at but everything at The Proper is an exception to that rule. Dahlia is a quiet, soft-spoken, and meticulously detail-oriented space in the very best way. It's romantic and everything in the space feels soft and well thought out. The service compliments the space perfectly as it's amazing and very attentive. The food is delicious and I'd happily go back anytime, it's just small bites and it looks like the menu rotates seasonally so what I ate isn't on there anymore but we had a pasta dish that was so delicious. The star of the night for me was my drink, the down and dirty. It was the most delicious martini I've ever had, I don't normally have two of those at dinner but this time I had to make an exception! We decided to try this place as it just opened! Very cute romantic vibes. The design of the interior is really beautiful. We waited in another restaurant before they brought us in. There was about 2 other people in there. Music was really soft and a little bland. It would be a lot better with a little more vibrant music and a little louder. We felt as if we had to whisper so no one around us could hear. Dropped a star purely for the vibes. I'll start with the eggplant! Honestly for the price it was worth it for the incredible flavors. But it was just such a small portion. You definitely won't go there for the food that's for sure! But great for a light snack. We got two drinks. The vodka martini which my friend said was amazing. Pleasant and solid afternoon tea at Dahlia for Valentine's weekend. My 4-year old loves going to tea ever since he experienced all the bells and whistles at the Fairmont Empress in Victoria, Canada. While the setting at Dahlia is less traditional, I enjoyed the modern, muted colors of the small tea room and the Asian teapot. The Proper Hotel's interior design is beautiful and transportive in a wholly different way than your usual English or Garden themed tea rooms. My son was thrilled with the heart themed dessert presentation for their Valentine's tea and service was friendly, if not always prompt or particularly attentive despite the small number of parties (there were three parties at most at any given time). The sandwiches were good enough, but the bread felt just a little stale and the flavors normal. The desserts were more exciting to taste, but I don't have much of a sweet tooth so I always focus more on the sandwiches. I was happy enough with the experience, but I can't say that for the price tag (well over 400 dollars for 4 people including tip, but no champagne) it felt like I got my money's worth. Also, while very pretty, the tea room felt very much like a place I'd like to have a drink rather than nurse a pot of tea and leisurely munch. I would visit the lovely location again, but for a cocktail. BTW - they do not validate and you have to valet. We all have our off days, including businesses. How we respond speaks volumes. Let me explain. I made an appointment in advance for the afternoon tea at Dahlia. I arrived early but ended up waiting around 30 min. to be seated. The hostess kindly informed me that they were understaffed & I thought she said that the afternoon tea would be on them. Now the food & tea + ambience were fine. The issue now is that they did not follow through with what they said. When I received the bill, it was the full price along with a surcharge to help them pay for employee health care. If I heard the hostess wrong & they weren't going to comp the afternoon tea, that's fine. But if making your customers wait when your business was at fault & offering a trivial apology for wasting their time is your way of rectifying the situation, I'm not ok with that. After posting the above review, Kambree from Dahlia reached out and invited me back, this time truly on them. I took her up on the offer and they were true to their word. We were seated right away and the service and food were great. They even provided some additional treats to take home. Shout out to Kambree from Dahlia and the waitress (I unfortunately forgot her name), I appreciate y'all's hospitality and will be back to support y'all as well as recommend you to family and friends. read more

A very elite experience - the private room bar in the back of the Hoxton Hotel in DTLA. Highly recommend this place for something slightly off the beaten path. Our server was very jovial and one of the cocktails was prepared table side. I got the Ultima Palabra - the Mexican gin was a new experience for me and the drink was excellent. My friend and I have done a LOT of afternoon teas, from Bel Air to Pasadena, and we both agreed that the food and service at Dahlia were the best we've experienced. I finished everything on my half of the tower for the first time in my afternoon tea career, yet I didn't feel bloated or over-sugared. Came here for afternoon tea. Found out they just started serving that last week. Good food and service. We liked especially the cucumber sandwich and smoked salmon sandwich. My husband and our friend loved the crab sandwiches because it was real crab meat. When the food came out on the tiered server, we were impressed with the presentation. I read somewhere that $60 is including tax and tip, but actually, it's not. They also charged a wellness surcharge of $3 per person. Valet parking is $17 plus tax for 3 hours.
