Charming speak easy like hidden bar in Downtown L.A. where you have to go in back of the building through the garage to see a canopy and burgundy colored drapery framing a reception desk & dark, open door. The entire bar is dark, mysterious with twinkle lights overhead. Like Las Vegas, once inside, it's hard to know if it's day or night outside. Only exception is in their outdoor patio mirrored on the sides like the hall at Versailles and sunlight coming in from above where smoking is allowed. We came early before 8pm during Happy Hour when non-members can enter with a person with a membership which allows 3 additional guests, and all guests are free to enter without a membership until 8pm. [$30 initial membership fee for a year and $20 annual renewal.] Caña (kahn yah) means cane in Spanish referring to sugar cane from which rum is made. Our bartender was helpful and personable welcoming us and taking our orders. Under advice from Caña member Elite Yelper, Isobel L., who graciously took us under her wing, we ordered a shot of Nicaraguan Flor de Caña Rum aged 12 years that came with a cigarillo. The high point of this place is the energy and the vibe. The dj, the people, and the bartenders are all a vibe; fun, upbeat and very positive. The down side to me were the drinks. I expected alot from a rum bar, but my Paloma was weak and watered down, and this is coming from a non-drinker. I'm from Texas so I've tried many versions of the drink and this one wasn't good. I made it due to a DJ who i've been wanting to see live for the longest was performing there and it was my one opportunity to meet her. Long story short, Caña Rum Bar is definitely a vibe. Latin Vibes throughout the evening, I was wishing it was a Friday or Saturday night. Nonetheless, I am writing this review mostly due to the service I received by one of their bartenders, Alex! Alex is a mensch, he not only has great service but has the best attitude and is very welcoming. I will definitely be re-attending soon because of his excellence. I've been coming to Caña Rum Bar in downtown LA for several years now, and my partner even longer. We've always loved this place for its consistently friendly staff, great bartenders, and professional security. The drinks are still top-notch, and I really appreciate that they offer cigars stored properly in a humidor--always fresh. That said, we've noticed a change in the crowd over the past year or so, and unfortunately, it's affected the overall vibe. Caña used to feel like a more exclusive spot--a place where people dressed up, the crowd was a bit more mature, and the music made you want to get on the dance floor. Lately, though, it feels like that atmosphere has shifted. The crowd seems much younger and more casual--sandals, backpacks, and all--and it just doesn't match the upscale feel the venue used to have. It also raises some questions about how strictly security is vetting at the door. The music this time around was disappointing. We tried putting in a couple of song requests--cumbias, merengue, salsa--the DJ nodded, seemed to agree, but never played anything close to that. The set leaned heavily toward hip-hop and techno, which might be great for some, but it didn't seem like most people were even dancing. I'm writing this not to bash the place but to share some honest feedback. Caña has always had a unique identity, and I hope they can lean back into what made it special in the first place. We went here on a whim after having dinner right next door. I am not sure about parking as we walked over. But there is a parking lot right next-door to El cholo which is right next-door to the bar. It is South Park so don't freak if you don't see anyone there signs there was a barcode for you to scan the pay for your parking. We went about 8:05PM which was perfect as it is members only before 8.This was on a Monday by the way. Out front there is a huge neon arrow with the bars name on it so it is easy to see. As you go in the direction the arrow is pointing it is through a parking lot and the bar is in the back. There was a gentleman there to greet us. He was very nice personable and professional. The bar was not crowded at all we were actually the only ones there at that time, being it was a Monday night. When you walked in the place it was such a chill, cool, hip, and laid-back relaxed vibe it was kind of dark but it was real sexy for a romantic mood. It's a dive bar, so that's usually the vibe. It's also a cigar lounge we discovered as we walked in. They had ambiance upon ambiance upon ambiance. It was so romantic as it was just myself and my dinner companion so it felt exclusive and intimate, which it was. As we sat at the bar we were immediately greeted by the bartender. He gave us detailed description of the signature drinks to help us decide. We decided to go with the bars signature drinks and they were "off the chain" ( outstanding) lol. They weren't too sweet or too weak or strong, they were just perfect. I was looking around the place when i discovered the outdoor patio with fire place for cigar smoking, very cool. Cozy for a relaxing drink after dinner as well. The fire place is such a nice touch. We like the bar so much we inquired about how to become members. We were informed by the bartender and the manager as he walked in. They informed us that all we needed to do was to give our name and email and pay $50 for the whole year and we can become members and come anytime we want. When you are a member you get more exclusive services such as being able to drink after 2 AM if you pleased because the bar is able to serve until 5 AM being an exclusive members only bar. So we decided to become members. I am looking so forward to going back to this place and trying other drinks and enjoy the ambience. There is music playing but no too loud for your listening pleasure. As we were leaving we saw a DJ setting up. We didn't inquire about it so I am assuming after a certain hour they may have a DJ. This has become my safe, go to spot whenever I want to go dancing in LA. The type of music ranges from Cumbia, salsa, merengue, Reggaetón and sometimes hip-hop. The venue is pretty small and does have an outdoor patio section where many people smoke cigars. Cigars are sold on the premises. Drinks are all rum-based and are typical LA prices ($16-$18). You do need to pay a membership fee that is good for a year in order to get in. You are able to bring three other people with you everything you go. This was a bit unexpected and not something I've encountered at similar venues before. It made the night start off on a slightly sour note, especially considering the already overpriced drinks. While the vibe inside was enjoyable, the surprise entrance fee left a bit of a negative impression. I LOVED this bar! I'd been wanting to go for YEARS, but I don't live close and I'd been daunted by the "membership" I'd heard was required to go. But then I received an invite to a book release party hosted by Angel City Press, so I figured that was my chance! The event promised $5 parking in the attached structure, from which I took a cool vintage elevator up into the lobby of the historic Petroleum Building, where Caña Rum Bar is located. The lobby security guard was very nice in pointing out where to go to enter the bar. The cocktails are carefully crafted, so there can be somewhat of a wait at the bar, but I just adored all three drinks I had: the Havana daiquiri (my favorite of the 3), the Cuban No. 2, and the El Boricua. I was impressed with the variety of their rums and the inventive spins they offer on traditional drinks. The book event occurred in the atrium area -- which I was delighted to find out was where Mrs. Doheny grew her orchids. It's a very charming space, one I'd love to see in the daytime or at magic hour/dusk with a little more light outside. I can't wait to go back! read more

Incredibly disheartened and disappointed by the way I was treated here. I had been here in the past and even celebrated my birthday here recently. Brought in a crowd of nearly 20 for someone else's birthday. There was a situation where I stepped in for someone who's card got declined due to a large charge being marked as a fraudulent charge (should have been a red flag). I went ahead and tried paying for them and my card was also declined, because it was also marked as a fraudulent charge. When I asked the bartender for the itemized receipt they immediately got defensive, as I suspected something was off with a seemingly large bill. Rather than continue a very calm conversation the bartender got security involved immediately and specifically kicked me out. I can't help but to conclude that this specific bartender was trying to dupe my friend to pay more. Will not be returning here. Otherwise, the DJ was incredibly friendly, the people at the door were friendly, and the ambience is constantly very chill and fun. Be careful with the bartenders. read more

I had a great time in a recent rum tasting. They recently changed tastings to Monday nights and I'm so glad I went. I learned so much and it was such a chill, fun experience. The bar itself has a dark, moody and sexy vibe. The entrance is inside a parking lot. But you can't park in that lot. It's street parking and can be tricky in the area. Indoor and outdoor seating. The back patio is outside and has fun lighting but people smoke out there so I tend to stay inside. They have a strict policy on shoes for safety reasons so ladies, don't wear sandals without straps in the back. Big shout out to the awesome manager, Calvin. He made me feel like family. Cana Rum bar is a unique place. First, it is a members only bar. I believe the reason for membership is so they can sell cigars because it is a private club. This makes sense here because rum pairs well with cigars and the theme is very Caribbean. Would lean Cuban (I believe) if Cuban brands were legal here, but we settle on the rest of the Caribbean which isn't bad. Membership is $50 per person for the year and you can bring up to 3 guests. However, they waived the membership at the door and let me in as a guest. Very nice customer service! I was prepared to pay. Second, it is somewhat geeky. In fact, I hung out at the bar to learn a few things myself and found that many of the customers were in the same situation. That is, they asked for recommendations for the rum in their drinks. I started with the classic Mojito. Didn't need help picking this as it was at the top of my list coming in. The rum choice was Dominican and was very good. I have had it with Havana Club in other countries but never Dominican rum. I enjoyed this combination. The Rum Old Fashioned is served with 1888 Rum, also from the Dominican and I must say it was also very good. 1888 is a very smooth and aromatic rum and I will be sure to look for it in the future. I had an extra shot on the side so I could taste the rum solo. Third, if this was not a specialty bar, I would call it a Dive Bar. But somehow, despite the dark divey ambiance, this bar gets past that. Probably because it is purposeful and deliberate. Drinks are ok-good, place is clean, even has a patio, lighting is great, not too dark, not lit up, and we'll the DJ is pretty good too! A place where you actually see people dancing and not participating in a staring contest. Maybe cause girls feel more comfortable to dance with other girls and less guys around This place is great, BUT, it sucks that the door is often closed and you can't tell when they are open or not. That must hit business hard. Unless "the ladies" are the only ones that get the correct number to call to enter seriously, barely any guys. Leave the door open and you get that 5th star.
