Gumbo Brothers made the night.... Stumbled into this portion of level 8, after the vibes were mild near the carousel rooftop bar. Good size crowd, but it was easy enough to get a drink from the bar. Vibes were good and got better when the Gumbo Brothers came on. They are a cover band, but specific to hip hop and RnB, and they killed it. Jay on the sax was amazing, and Apollo on the mic was perfect. We will be back on Friday or Saturday, since I believe that's when the Gumbo Brothers are there. read more

Gonna try to paint the picture in as few words as possible. Sorry for the long narrative: 1) I planned out a special night for my wife throughout all of Level 8 2) Had reservations set at Lucky Mizu for Dinner to Mr. Wanderlust for Cocktails and Entertainment and then to Sinners and Santos for Drinking and Dancing for Latin Night 3) Showed up for our 6:45 PM reservation at Lucky Mizu but was turned away 3 times stating they didn't have seats available. After being seated 40 minutes later, service took 20 minutes to take our order, and another 30 minutes to be served. Food was 'okay', there was no entertainment, and multiple customers were unhappy with similar slow service... but some of them were comped parts of their meals.. we didn't even get a sorry until we spoke to the manager on our way out, expressing the reason was they had no idea it would be this busy on a Thursday (they take reservations, so...), and also blamed an 'all you can eat promotion' they promoted earlier, and they only had two serves on staff that night. 4) We were late to Mr. Wanderlust, but were luck to get two seats at the bar after another couple left. We order two cocktails and a coffee... and were charged just over $140. Then, we were asked to move because they wanted to take our seats. We asked about the bill to the bartendar, and she expressed that since she didn't take our original order, she couldn't help us. She simply just had us stand there. We were not going to pay since it seemed way off... until finally we spoke to a guy walking by. We showed him our ticket/receipt and said out loud, "this isn't right". He came back quickly with a revised bill of almost $120. This was still far too high, but no one else seemed interested in helping us find resolve, so we ate it since we didn't want to be late for part 3 of the night. 5) Hoping to salvage the night with drinks and dancing... we tried to find the entrance to Sinners and Santos for their advertised Latin night. We had made reservations here too, and had full confirmation of the reservation... BUT, after finally being directed to the entrance (outside on the patio), they were closed. No sign of why and no one who worked at the other locations had a reason, but they were just simply closed. 6) So, after paying $35 for parking, about $140 in cocktails and food while waiting for our initial reservation at Golden Hour and Que Barbaro, $150+ for dinner at Lucky Mizu, and $120 at Mr. Wanderlust... approximately $500 total... we didn't even get to dance. Maybe this place had a bad night, but based on what the workers said, and how they treated us... it sure seems like the norm. Don't get me wrong, the place is cool... some really great experiential elements and nice photo ops... but I would have had a much better time somewhere else. We got VIP. But it was so crammed with all the exaggeration of furniture- stools and benches. We moved some around to dance in our area and staff was very rude. Told us not to move the furniture. We won't be returning and paying for two bottle services as we were the only ones that overpaid for our stay to not even be able to enjoy dancing in our area. Although those stools, benches and chairs could be a definite hazard in case we need to evacuate the building. Definitely over crammed and staff was very unaccommodating. We realized that we could wander around "level eight" and see what other clubs, bars, and things that they had. If I could give 1,000 stars, I would!! I had the most incredible experience at Mr. Wanderlust for my birthday. I tried making a reservation for a large party online and the general manager, Robert, reached out via text to assist. He explained that it's an $80 minimum per person for table service, which includes cocktails starting at $22 and a limited food menu. I was concerned about the food menu because it had really expensive items ($100 and up), seafood and salad. I asked if it would be possible to get some starchy foods like fries and pizza. Robert said he "can make that happen." As more people confirmed they were going, I updated Robert on the party size. He said, "the more, the merrier!" Soooo nice and accommodating! When we arrived, we were brought to a roped off section in the middle of the room with perfect view of the revolving piano player above the bar. Robert greeted me and introduced me to our server and chef. The chef explained that he was going to send out waves of small bites. I was so blown away by the food that came out! Rihanna inspired chicken nuggets topped with caviar!! It was actually really good and the caviar wasn't even that salty. Excellent quality. They also sent out towers of beef sliders, fries, chips, truffle pizza, cream puffs and sushi!! It was more than enough food for my party of 30 and everything was delicious! They even brought out a sweet birthday dessert for me. Our server also suggested we get bottle service so it's easier for everyone to help themselves to drinks right away. We got a bottle of Haku Vodka and some blanco tequila for about $400 each. When the bill approached the $80 minimum per person, the server let me know. I was really appreciative of that because by then, we were pretty much done and we just wanted to order a few extra drinks. I get to the front of the bar. The guy next to me gets the bartender's attention to help me. I order an IPA and a Casa Migos with soda water. He asks if my drinks were on the other guy's bill, we both said no. He then hands me a bill for $139.00. I argued that a beer and a drink does not cost that much and that he had put the other guy's drink on my tab. He argued and said that's what it costs for 2 drinks at Mr. Wanderlust. It was not. He said he will need a manager to overturn the incorrect bill. We asked the front and they informed us that they don't have a manager currently. We then asked if he can compensate and give us more drinks to match the bill he charged me. He said he couldn't and then told me to go get the other guy. I do. It turns out he charged the other guy for his drinks and then put the other guy's bill on mine as well. They charged us twice. He then says, it's not my problem, you guys work this out. It was a blast celebrating my friend's birthday here. We reserved tables for a big party. The staff are friendly to take our orders of drinks and small plate meals. They surprised us with a lit up banner announcing the birthday when they brought the drinks. The real treat was watching the singer Desmond Roberts perform, who was a finalist from American Idol. A band named The Gumbo Bros followed and they played some really cool OG hip hop that got us all dancing and singing to it. There were also some professional dancers that came out. It's a speakeasy vibe, so you are immediately brought in through a bookshelf to the bar. I would definitely suggest getting there early if you can because it can be difficult to get a spot anywhere. We were finally able to get a few seats at the bar, but it still took awhile to get any service. We got the Break In Oaxaca ($20) and Passionate Affair ($22), which were both delicious cocktails. When we immediately walked in, there was a piano player at an actual piano at the bar. He was in a hidden compartment that was behind the bar, which was so cool! We tried waiting a bit longer to see if he would come back, but then ANOTHER performance with burlesque dancers started instead. I just want to start by saying that really the only reason that they are getting a four-star review is because of the Gumbo Brothers band. They were the reason that I had such an amazing time. The venue is very nice. I love the variety of entertainment. From the piano singer to the burlesque dancers to the live band. This is a great venue and a great concept but unfortunately there were several things that I was not fond of. I went for my birthday so I made a reservation for five people. I was aware that there was a minimum span of $75 per person, but I didn't read the fine print to know that gratuity would be added to that. The minimum spend ended up being almost $100 per person. Their drinks were on average $22 a piece. That comes out to about a three drink minimum per person which is a lot. Especially if you have to drive. If there were appetizers I did not see any food on the menu. There was only one menu for us to share as we were told they ran out of menus anyway The service was also very poor. I paid $75 in gratuity for a waitress who barely came to check on us. Every time we needed something someone had to go and find her. I spent the total of $461. When I checked in with our waitress to ask where my total was, she said it was about $260. When she came back with the final bill it came up to 461. Definitely not what I expected. I also met some new friends and allowed them to order a drink under my tab since I still had to meet the minimum. The waitress came back with four drinks and it was three of them. They said that they didn't order the 4th drink and she said they did. She basically refused to take the drink back and handed it to me and said happy birthday but I was still paying for it. I didnt make a big deal out of it only because I still had a minimum to meet. But I thought that was a little rude. The table that was reserved for me was in the back of the venue. In the corner. We couldn't see the band. We were away from all of the action. For that kind of money. It would have been nice to At least be closer to the front or at least have a view that wasn't filled with people standing in front of me.. I also noticed there were lots of people who didn't pay for a table but sat at an available section. My friends and I still had a great time in spite of everything. I will be back. I strongly advise AGAINST booking here. My experience was chaotic from the start and I, being the optimist, still hoped for the best, but in the end my reservations and efforts proved to be futile as this venue and manager (I believe her name is Clara) booked a private event on the night of my reservation and essentially rendered myself and my guests without a place to celebrate my 40th birthday nor an apology or any type of accountability for their mistake. Thankfully Toni from Que Barbara was extremely helpful, I'll write a separate review there. But let's start from the top. On their website you're advised to submit a request for events, I submitted one. Days passed without response or reply or confirmation. I called, several times. Essentially you get through to a "concierge" but this is just a fancy name for a message taker. She advised me to send an email. I did. Again days passed with no reply. Finally I went to the venue to speak with someone directly. I asked to speak to a manager. No manager ever came. The host asks me if I booked through open table. I had not, there's no open table reference on their site, I followed instructions on their website. I pull up open table as she informs me that a group of ten would warrant bottle service 2 bottles to be exact. A group of five would warrant one bottle. Bottle service was about $450/500 on the low end. Meanwhile I'm on open table and see that I can reserve a table for four without bottle service requirements. Fine. That's what I will do. I made reservations for myself and three others and would tell anyone else that wanted to join me that they could meet me there and do the same. Settled. Fast forward, three days before the event I received an email from open table saying wanderlust canceled my reservation. This was followed by an email from wanderlust stating they were changing their reservation process but "Any existing reservations you may have will still be honored for entry. However, please note that tables and bar seating will now be available on a first come, first serve basis." What ensued after this was a back and forth exchange of emails with changing policies and overwhelming inconsistencies. I'll post screenshots of those emails. The final message essentially saying we're sorry for confusion we will comp you some drinks and bar and high tables will be first come first serve. Fine. I planned to arrive rather early, it will all work out. Instead, upon arrival I was told the entire venue was rented out for a private party. And the manager, Clara I believe, told me my reservation was canceled. I showed her the email thread confirming my reservation and she essentially shrugged and said the venue was closed to us. I was standing there in my full 20s themed garb ready to celebrate my 40th birthday with friends and the manager essentially shrugged me off and had no remorse or empathy whatsoever. I was completely distraught and felt so invisible and dismissed. I've never experienced such lack of professionalism and human decency at an establishment before. I asked multiple times to speak to her boss, I was instead ushered toward a manager of another venue in this conglomerate. First the gentleman who manages golden hour (which was closed due to rain) and then to Toni who was the only person who truly expressed empathy and accountability and tried to make it right by having us at her venue Que Barbara, as mentioned I'll be writing a separate review there. There needs to be some extreme changes at this place in regards to reservation processes and professionalism. A brief assessment of other reviews show similar issues and my presumption is that until they make some serious changes, more reviews like this will persist. read more

Ok...so, first thing to understand about this spot is that it is a bar/lounge. It's an upscale lounge that caters to hipsters (not saying this is a bad thing...it just does). Mr. Wanderlust is a location within a consortium of restaurants in DTLA's Level 8 complex. The complex is dripping with vibes, and not much else. The bar requires entry through a hidden bookshelf wall...cool. Bar is ornate, with a standard bar in the middle, flanked by very close tables/booths. The menu is a selection of small bite, re-imagined bar foods that will set you back a pretty penny. There's a slider (a single slider) named Le Petit Mac which is roughly the size of a whitecastle burger, boasting "2 all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese". (Sigh) served with a small bowl of string format potato chips. $25. Ordered a Truffle Cavatappi that was roughly 20 pieces of pasta (sauce was good though!)...though not $42 good. Note: if you are reserving a small table, (for 2) you'll be required to clear $160 on your bill... For those of you who follow me, you know that if there's an Old Fashioned to be had, I'm drinking it! Mr. Wanderlust's O.F. is decent, though far from the best I've had. Service is meh. Every interaction with service was a "flag down". Flag down for silverware, more water, to order another drink... If you're looking for a bar, but "something different", would recommend (though, understand that the price tag is above that of a typical bar). After having dinner, my friends and wandered over to this speakeasy. I HIGHLY recommend coming here early around 7ish. By the time it was 9p, it was PACK. This bar is amazing! The bartenders really know what they're doing and they're really quick. Their drinks are delicious. Also throughout the night, the wall against the bar opens up to a pianist. Came in her to check out the new Level 8 venues on a Sunday. Ambiance in Mr Wanderlust is pretty cool. You enter through a bookcase, very speakeasy vibe. Kinda dark inside but again a lounge vibe. The menus say small bites and believe me they are small. They say they are shareable but don't come hungry. Pretty pricey too. About $20 for the apps but they are so small. Don't let the sliders photo fool you, it's the size of hockey puck and you only get one. Drinks were tasty but honestly I couldn't get any alcohol feel from it. Pretty weak for a $30 drink. A highlight was some entertainment appeared later in the evening. A magician walked stand did close up card tricks. Pretty good too. After, the wall over the bar rotated around and revealed a piano and pianist. He was wonderful and had a great voice. I've been here twice & both times I was just in awe. The performance behind the bar is incredible. The pianist is really good! And the other burlesque performers are amazing. I'm not broke just reasonable lol I think if they had more app options people would stay and drink longer. But maybe that's not the vibe they're going for. Spent quite a bit of time at this spot last night (Saturday) . I'm mixed about this review because I had three diff experiences all in one night. Came to mr wanderlust and it was pretty early hours we had a really nice server athena who was so helpful and friendly and gave us the rundown of the whole level 8. Also had a pleasant experience with the bar - Alex made up a drink for us that was absolutely delicious and exciting to just tell him what we like and don't like then have it made on the spot. So very cool. Our server helped get us a spot at Que Barro for dinner and she said to come back after. When we came back we had another server- latina with straight hair (didn't catch her name) and the experience was very different. She was not attentive and hung out In the corner chatting with who I'm guessing was security and vapping right by our table. My husband had to get up to call her over to order which was annoying. Then she never came back with the drinks she just went back to her corner. We flagged down our first server ( who was running around busy) and asked if she could get our drinks and she opened up the tab and didn't see our drinks so she put them in and delivered them. I get it to a certain extent but when the drinks are 25 plus you would expect better service all around. It wasn't a total bust but service should be consistent.
