This was our first time here, but we will definitely be coming back again!! The owner was so friendly and the ingredients are local and fresh

Constantly changing menus for variety!

Yes, busu means ugly in Japanese, but the name is in no way repereserntatice of the beautiful and delicious food here. (Apparently it's just the chefs last night in romaji/Japanese pronunciation). At this walk up counter, you can order from a daily changing menu. On our visit we had crab bao buns, the delicious pickle plate filled with kimchi and pickled radishes, and a sweet potato noodle salad with plenty of cucumber, shiso and Yuzu tofu. Everything was delicious and well seasoned. I'd come back here again to grab a meal and to go sit somewhere where I could watch the sea lions.

What was once yakisoba...

Mind. Blowing. Food. It's that good. Proportions are monstrous and mushrooms plentiful. This place is the place that you take your food friends. Soulful food. Genuine.

Red lobster mushroom curry soup

There's a counter top for 4 people with two other benches to sit at. No take out boxes, the only ambiance is what you see looking into the kitchen and only outdoor seating. Red lobster mushroom curry soup was light and refreshing. Busu corn tasted like it was topped with Korean corn cheese and some spicy sauce..so butter, cheese and mayo and maybe some sugar with sesame seeds for texture. Shoyu quail eggs were soft and flavorful. Can be eaten just fine without rice. Also got to try the chilled noodles with chili oil, sesame oil, flaked salt, lemon cucumber slices, grilled Japanese eggplant with foraged mushrooms. I can see why they sell out. This place is Japanese fusion and donation based so the prices are just suggestions. No excuse to complain about the prices since the whole menu is donation based.

Took a little trip down the coast and stopped here to get some food. It was highly recommended. We got the pickled veggies- he does it himself, the yakisoba with pork belly (you had a choice of that or shrimp), veggie miso soup and the fried spam donburi. The portions are pretty good - 2 people can easily share an entree. Loved the flavors. He does a different menu for the day. Literally a window that you walk up and order. Give him time to make your order fresh- it's a one man show. So glad we had the food here- we are fans!

noodle soup with some sake from next door

Were staying in the area for the night and saw this place online had five star reviews everywhere. It was nearby to our hotel, so we walked over to check it out. It was a chilly night and a bit rainy, so when we saw it was a takeout only window, we were like oh no Then we saw the menu.. only 4 items, all of which looked super cozy. We both got the pork noodle soup, then ducked inside next door at the coffee shop to stay warm while we waited. Bought some sake + ordered another dish there for our toddler, then I walked back over to the window and our food was already ready- so fast! I started eating at the bar while we waited for our toddler's food to be ready. He saw me slurping noodles though and demanded that I share, so I used my to-go lid to share some- toddler approved. The soup itself was soooo good.. rich complex broth, pork belly, thick noodles.. there was also some seemingly random sausage in it that I almost didn't eat, but it was seriously one of the best parts.. very unexpected. The guy working (maybe owner?) was also a good vibe. Definitely took the edge off the cold night. Would come here often if I lived in the area.. Not to be missed, if you are passing by!

Wow a hidden gem for sure! Small little place with a window to order (takeout only). Menu is limited, but the portions are HUGE!! We were craving some Japanese food in the area and was so pleasantly surprised that we found this place. We ordered takeout, walked around for 15-20 mins, returned to pick up our food, and brought it back to feast on while watching TV. Definitely recommend! If you're unsure what you want to eat/try, staff and Chef are SO friendly and they'll give you honest opinions about what you may like. Dishes are made-to-order and you can customize it if you don't like a particular topping/ingredient. Love it!

Busu is literally a hole-in-the-wall, with one very ornate doorknob. The food is fantastic, with layers upon layers of different flavors. It's greasy, salty, and addictive - everything you'd expect in good street food. My favorite is the yakisoba, which has a nice smoky flavor without the burnt taste. I like okonomiyaki to be just a tad fluffier, but this one is still enjoyable. The portion is not huge, but very filling. Two normal people could easily share one to-go box.

This hit the spot! Yakisoba and Okonomiyaki are a match made in heaven and Busu knows how to deliver! Takeout only seems perfect for this covid time, but once this all passes don't let it sway you. Order to go to bring back home or enjoy outside as you watch the sun set. You won't regret it. Everything is made to order and took around 15-20 minutes. Perfect amount of time to walk around before you get your grub on. Lots of street parking on all sides of the street. Oh and did I mention the portions are gigantic! You will not be left hungry ;)

Burnt bottom of okonomyaki

I was kinda excited to try something other than your fish and chips takeout since we had our dog with us. The kimchi was good. My okonomyaki was really burnt on the bottom side and it did impact the flavor. The general flavor was good, and it wasn't overcooked inside. The amount of katsu sauce was a bit more than I'd like. I wonder if perhaps he would do better with a helper to take the orders so he could concentrate more on the food. My boyfriend ordered the yakisoba. It had good flavor also but had weird crispy spots that were so burnt they were crunchy like top ramen. He was really generous with the Bonito flakes and they were good quality.

Yakisoba with tofu and made vegetarian by taking off the tuna flakes.

This is a cute little walk up window with a strong game. I have always believed when someone has a small menu it leads to greatness. Everything is done to perfection each time. Busu was no exception. There's also something for everyone. I'm a vegetarian and was greeted with flavorful, sauted, tofu, The texture was on point. The soba noodles were dripping with flavor and the crisp fresh veggies were mouth watering. It's a dish to share because the serving is out of the park. I ended up having noodles for 3 meals and it was a divine joy every time.

Tofu yakisoba

The cliff notes: grab some delicious Japanese food to go and enjoy it by the pier. 10/10 for authentic, thoughtful Japanese food with high quality ingredients. There are rotating dishes each day and vegan/ vegetarian options with labeling of so ( I appreciate this so much) ; make sure to stop by before they sell out! I was thoroughly impressed with my tofu yakisoba that came topped with microgreens and chili threads!! I appreciate this the added touch that not only make it aesthetically pleasing but add flavor and nutritional value too! This came jam packed with flavor, and an abundance of food. The noodles had that perfect wok char that I'm always looking for in an Asian noodle dish!! My only suggestion would be to garnish with a lime for a bit of acid to bring out the salty flavors! I really enjoyed my experience with Busu and I hope I get another chance to stop by and try some other dishes.

The okonomiyaki and seaweed salad were amazing! As was our conversation with the chef-owner. Ask about his mushroom foraging!

Best place in Astoria hands down. Uses local fresh ingredients and has a new menu every week.

And…read morean accidental favorite, the pork fried rice that we accidently received (instead of Pork Teriyaki) when we called in an order (remember to speak succinctly and distinctly, ordering the way the menu describes it), anyway this pork fried rice is unlike any other we've had, delicious chunks of pork, veggies, bit of whole fried egg, YUMMMM, we get it every time now. If you go in for sit-down, try the bento box. They really do it right. You might have to wait a bit, but its wonderful and executed delightfully. To-go is served in earth-friendly boxes; but they'll put it in a plastic bag unless you bring your own. Serving portions are a bit on the small side, prices a bit higher than typical. But the quality is worth it to us. Admittedly, havent tried much of the sushi selection here apart from whats included in the bento box. The owner/operator is gracious and friendly. And BONUS, unlike MANY teriyaki places across the northwest they are OPEN on SUNDAYS. Yes you read that right. OPEN. :)

Since my wife always picks the best places, she stumbled upon another gem in Soon Yi. Let me tell you why. Great service, easy to find location and large portions of Sashimi- fresh Sashimi. My wife and I decided to order the Maguro which came with 6 thick pieces of tuna. The minute you put these slices in your mouth they will melt in delight. Probably one of the freshest and tastiest sashimi I have had in a while. It was in fact so tasty that my wife and I ordered another 6 pieces afterwards. We were in Tuna-Heaven. Our waitress, Jenn, was so kind and attentive. She took care of all our orders and also had a friendly chat with us. She also mentioned that a friend of hers had a fresh Bao Bakery in Long Beach just across the Astoria-Megler bridge where we crossed the next day just to check that place out (see my other review). We had a fantastic dinner here and went home with full bellies. Did I forget to mention that we also had the Sukiyaki soup as well. My 7-up soda was served in a large glass which greatly complemented my food. We also tried their Xiao Long Bao but didn't like it as much. Highly recommend this place if you're staying near the Cannery Pier Hotel which we did. The Holiday Inn is also right across the street from here if you folks are staying there. This place gets a 5 out of 5. There's also a tv in the corner showing a video of the tuna fishing process. Something to appreciate while you're enjoying this great fresh fish.

I can't speak to the non-sushi offerings. Everything is fresh, delicious, and gorgeously prepared. Prompt and friendly service too. There is one other sushi place in Astoria (it's downtown). It doesn't even come close to the quality of this place. This is THE place for sushi on the North Coast.
