I heard Custard King and I thought that sounded like a pretty cool name so I had to stop here and check it out. I tried their Philly Cheesesteak with sauce and fries. It took about 10 minutes to come out but it was really good. It had a good amount of bell peppers and a nice zesty sauce. It was a little heavy on the salt but otherwise it was a great sandwich. My wife had a small vanilla custard cone dipped in butterscotch. It was way too sweet for me but she liked it a lot. There is some patio seating but it was full. We were told custard king was a must visit when we were in Astoria. The line was long but we decided to wait, but the line moves fast. We wanted to try the custard but went with their burger and fries, which were really good. They also get food out pretty fast considering how busy they are. Parking is a little tough but Astoria isn't usually too busy. This place is REALLY good! The custard is creamy and delicious. I can see why it has been around for so long. We have been coming here every day of our trip. They have regular cones, waffle cones, or waffle cone bowls. The shakes are on another level. They have a ton of toppings but my favorite is the homemade lemon curd. It is fantastic! Whether you go classic or try one of their specialty combos, you won't be disappointed. One of the best parts? They offer solid gluten-free options, which is a big deal for my wife and I. The gluten-free buns actually hold up and taste great--no dry or crumbly texture here. It's nice knowing there's something safe and tasty for everyone in our group. The portion sizes are also worth mentioning. Whether it's a burger, fries, or one of their sides, you're definitely getting your money's worth. We often find ourselves full before finishing everything (but we power through because it's that good). The only reason for the 4-star rating is the fryer oil. About one out of the last three times we've been, the fried items had a noticeable burnt oil flavor that really throws off the taste. One of the staff saw my little furry friend and took it upon herself to pour a fresh bowl of water for him. The custard is very creamy and taste great. We enjoy stopping here when we drive through Astoria. Staff isn't really friendly. I still give it three stars because I think the quality of the custard is really good. Nobody seems to be happy to work there though. I previously had gotten a shake here so I'm not sure if they've changed their menu. I didn't see any options and in fact, asked someone if they can blend the toppings with the custard and I was told no. There is no inside, so we need to sit outside or bring home This is custard, and they only had one flavor, which is why I gave 4 stars.
