Easy choice for an American burger and fries. Not to mention custard and shakes. Wasn't too busy upon arrival, maybe one or two orders in front of us. Lady at the counter was very friendly and got our shakes out quickly. They were about half empty when our food came out. Maybe 10 minutes or so. Burger and fries were hot and delicious. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and my kiddo got the kiddo cheeseburger. Both were much larger than an average burger from anywhere else. Fry sauce was delicious and was almost completely gone by the time we polished off our fries. They had 4-5 large outdoor tables to sit at and watch the hustle of the Columbia River walk. I think this is an Astoria must-try, for the custard alone! (Is it truly custard? I'm not sure. Tastes similar to soft serve to me.) They also offer burgers, tacos, fish and chips, and other food items if you're hungry. But on a sunny afternoon, after a hike or day at the beach, the custard is the perfect sweet treat. The building's clearly been around for a while so it's not a fancy setup. You order from one window in the front and pickup from another window when they call your name. Went in for a burger today and physically observed the middle aged woman working in the back wipe her nose with a bare hand and then handle multpile orders of fries with the same unwashed snot hands. The young lady also working in the back was aggresivley rearranging multiple orders of fries bare handed then proceeded to wipe her hands on her pants and continue on. Snotty fingers aside, you should definitely be wearing gloves when you handle ready to eat food. Immediately threw my food im the garbage. Wont be returning and ill be reporting this to the county health inspector come monday. YUCK. read more

I'm a big fan of independent burger, places, especially those that haven't tried to become a Gastro pub overtime. I doubt this one has changed much in 60 years, but having only recently discovered it I can only surmise. It's no frills with a walk up counter, and outdoor seating only. But the fries are outstanding and they make a great cheeseburger as well. But my favorite so far, is the fish sandwich, much different than anything you'll get at McDonald's and oh so good! A small location just at the outskirts of downtown, Custard King has been around for years and they've completely mastered their craft. I got the clam chowder and can say its the BEST! I wish I had gotten more as i was spooning every last bit by the end. Their fish tacos are also loaded, I could barely finish my second one. Service was very quick despite the 15-20 people waiting. I'm not sure if I am just too much of a custard connoisseur but this place really did not impress me all that much. We spent the afternoon walking around Astoria window-shopping and saw this place on Google so we decided to give it a shot. We visited mid-afternoon and there was no line. Their menu shows a wide variety of fried treats and hamburgers, which all sounded delicious. I decided to go with my usual however which is a vanilla cone with rainbow sprinkles. This is were they lose the most points in my book. The sprinkles they use are those little spherical ones that are way harder than the longer ones you typically see on ice cream and pastries. They are very hard and difficult to eat. Sprinkles fans will know what I am talking about. This place seems to be an Astoria institution and it can be found in a cool little building right on Commercial Street. For these reason alone, it is worth a visit.
