Came here for dinner and the restaurant was easy to find, they have a giant sign facing the street lol walking inside it is a very quaint Japanese restaurant, it has plants and nice seating all around and still very open and bright. I decided to order a variety of items, hot matcha tea, a tuna roll, miso soup and a donburi. The food and service was amazing. The fish was the freshest i've had in a while, everything was great! The miso does have a shrimp base that i was not a huge fan of, i don't like the shellfish flavor is all. The only other critique i had is the roll was a little heavy on the rice vs fish ratio, however the freshness of the tuna was worth it. I was expecting to have leftovers for lunch the following day and i ended up eating my entire meal lol if you're visiting the area this place is a must try! My wife and I arrived in Astoria late in the evening after a 2hr drive from Portland and wanted to get a bite to eat near our hotel. Since my wife always picks the best places, she stumbled upon another gem in Soon Yi. Let me tell you why. Great service, easy to find location and large portions of Sashimi- fresh Sashimi. My wife and I decided to order the Maguro which came with 6 thick pieces of tuna. The minute you put these slices in your mouth they will melt in delight. Probably one of the freshest and tastiest sashimi I have had in a while. It was in fact so tasty that my wife and I ordered another 6 pieces afterwards. We were in Tuna-Heaven. Our waitress, Jenn, was so kind and attentive. She took care of all our orders and also had a friendly chat with us. She also mentioned that a friend of hers had a fresh Bao Bakery in Long Beach just across the Astoria-Megler bridge where we crossed the next day just to check that place out (see my other review). We had a fantastic dinner here and went home with full bellies. Did I forget to mention that we also had the Sukiyaki soup as well. My 7-up soda was served in a large glass which greatly complemented my food. We also tried their Xiao Long Bao but didn't like it as much. Highly recommend this place if you're staying near the Cannery Pier Hotel which we did. The Holiday Inn is also right across the street from here if you folks are staying there. This place has fantastic sushi! It took me a while to pop in, even though I live here in Astoria. I finally did and was surprised to see how high quality the sushi is here. I can't speak to the non-sushi offerings. Everything is fresh, delicious, and gorgeously prepared. Prompt and friendly service too. There is one other sushi place in Astoria (it's downtown). This place was soooooo good. Right across the street from my hotel (Holiday Inn). I rarely go out to sushi anymore because so many places are all about the special rolls, and with my egg allergy I have to avoid mayo based sauces and tempura, which are prevalent on those items. While they have them if rolls are your thing, their sashimi/nigiri/donburi type choices are extensive. The fish was high quality, fresh, and carefully prepared. I wasn't super hungry, but didn't leave anything on my plate because it was so delicious. 10/10 would recommend! read more

I CANNOT say enough about this joint. The flagship USA location, this is one of the BEST sushi spots I've ever found in my travels, and to have it located in the Goondocks is amazing. This isn't the more Americanized versions with highly sauced/breaded/fried, so don't expect to see a lot of rolls. DO expect some of the freshest tuna, friendliest staff, and value you're likely to find. To put this place into context, I visit it a couple times a month, at least, and a friend of mine when visiting for work literally ate it for 2 meals per day for almost a month. This spot is a fairly large open restaurant with friendly service and good sushi at an affordable price. Both the toro combo and the 'just tuna' combo were very good quality. The toro combo comes with a tuna roll, three types of tuna nigiri, and a seared tuna nigiri. The 'just tuna' combo consisted of a couple types of tuna nigiri, seared tuna nigiri, and gunkan-maki (nori wrapped around rice and chopped up tuna topped with onions and sesame seeds). Started with the simple but delicious Miso soup. Followed by several different 2-portion nigiri. Shrimp, eel, Toro tuna, Albacore tuna. All were terrific! The food is fabulous, I'm so happy we have a new sushi spot in the area and close to home ( literally 1min wall) the service is top notch, servers are lovely and are kind and welcoming. They give you a menu in hand and when you are ready to order you can either order in person or they have you scan the menu through your phone and order in their app, you can add on as you go aswell. The wait is short, they start bringing your plates of goodness out and you just eat and enjoy. The ambiance is comfortable, they have tables for groups and smaller tables if you are on your own or a couple. Highly recommend this spot!! read more
