We came here on our Astoria stay. The first time we stayed in Astoria 3 years ago, this place was newer. After 3 years, this spot has been here for at least 5 years. So we had to give it a try. Positives: -reasonable prices -friendly service -the fried rice was good and drunken noodles look to have been cut from scratch. Negatives: -khao soi was a little salty. -location is smaller so you might not be able to get larger parties in that easily. Overall 4/5 We are very seasoned Thai food lovers. Really good food here. This is a charming, quirky little place tucked into a side of a building downtown. It's a one woman operation, so bear this in mind. The owner is the waitress and the cook (and presumably the dishwasher, etc.). The restaurant's interior has a Cuban decor, often with Caribbean music playing. Super cozy and intimate. Despite the Cuban decor, however, the food is Thai. Like I said, it's quirky. It's not your standard issue Thai restaurant food either. It's got a hard to define uniqueness to it. Super fresh and flavorful. It's really good! The main frustration with this place (and why I gave 4 rather than 5 stars), is the irregular hours of operation. It's hard to tell when it will be open. I wouldn't count on posted hours, because they're not always reliable. Understandable for a one woman operation, perhaps. But it's well worth a visit if it's open. Our approach is to aim to come and eat here (we live here in Astoria), with a back up restaurant in mind. We fully expect that the back up destination is where we'll end up eating. If Curry&CoCo is open? Great. We eat here. If it's not, we move onto the second option. I get that this might be annoying to some folks, but it is what it is. TL/DR: don't expect a lot of interaction, she's a one woman show, handling the phone orders, the cooking, and the tables. Presumably, she also does the dishes. The food she brings out of the tiny kitchen space, however, is worth the missing socializing. In the tiniest of spaces, with four tables and a few seats at the bar, this place might be overlooked from the, what, 20' storefront? (see picture) You step in and there are a couple of four tops, a couple of two tops and the bar around the middle of the place and the kitchen in the back third. That's it. We had been noshing our way through Astoria so we were going to split something. We spotted Coconut Shrimp on the menu, and added that as an appetizer. We opted for the Sweet Basil Salmon. Over-fried shrimp are a war crime, if you ask me, so we were delighted that these were perfectly cooked. The sauce was nothing special, but we're used to the spicy Marmalade at the Fly By Night Club, so nothing else compares. A good way to start. The chef/owner/waitress/hostess/phone-order-taker/everything was in constant motion. She had her ingredients all withing arms reach and she moved from fryer to wok burner, to big stove with efficiency and fluency that bespoke her mastery of her craft. When it arrived in a cloud of aroma, it was just delicious. I cannot speak to the authenticity, but it was damned good. The salmon was fried. I assume that the fryer is used a little more here as it makes quick work of already seasoned food, and if it is used as expertly as it is here, then that's just fine with me. As I said, the salmon was tender and moist, and blended seamlessly with the sauce prepared for it. Fried Basil. In the deep fryer. Seriously. Crisp, with an almost tea-leaf flavor, when added to a bite they changed the whole experience. Teeny-tiny, even though there's no social social interaction, this is a gem in Astoria. side note, I was taking the dog out for the last piddle of the evening and had occasion to speak at some length with the aforementioned renaissance woman who owns this place. She's quite charming, which makes the lack of a social element a little more frustrating. read more

Ok I am a little salty about my trip to Curry and Coco. We stayed at the hotel across from it and we were starving. Reviews looked great so we thought why not we love curry. Think Again!!! This place was tiny inside so they had zero space for us but they did offer to sit us outside which we happily took. After that everything went down hill. Water, napkins, silverware ect were all brought out as well as menus but then we were forgotten. It took another 15-20 minutes for them to come out and take our order. We order our drinks and our food at the same time. I ordered two different things because I really wants Tom Kah Soup but knew it would not be enough so I also got yellow curry. We got our salad rolls about 20 minutes later which seemed like a lot of time for a salad roll. That is also when we got our drinks.. again that is a long time. The food came out 5 minutes later which sucked as we were still enjoying our salad rolls but it wasn't a huge deal as we were starving. Sadly they never brought me the Tom Kah Soup. Honestly they didn't even have it on our bill. When I went in to pay because 20 minutes after being done eating we still didn't have our bill I went inside. They seemed surprised that I came in and asked to pay. I asked them to remove the Tom Kah Soup as we never received it and the response was oh yeah.. I forgot to put that in. No apology or nothing. My yellow curry was suppose to be with out onions which it wasn't as well. When I went in to pay there weren't a ton of people in there so I was shocked by the continued lack of service. My son and I have recently done side by side taste tests of our favorite Thai items in the space between CoCo and that other place across the main street on 14th. Each time we discovered the same thing. CoCo's food tastes like he wanted it to be delicious, and the another place gave someone instructions on how to make it. If you want good food in Astoria you go to CoCo. This should really be common knowledge at this point and I'm a bit offended that anyone would come to Astoria and not eat here. If you bet me $100 who could make the best American sausage-waffle-n-egg breakfast in Astoria I would put that money on CoCo without hesitation. I have no idea if he's ever done it in his life, if he has ever eaten it himself, but that doesn't matter. I'd bet on him because any food he makes is delicious, and I trust him. I could hand him bread or a cup of rice, and he would hand it back delicious. Imagine this man, a man who can create deliciousness from nothing - and he's going to cook Thai food for you. Imagine that it turns out he has decades of training in Thai cuisine. If I learned that as a tourist I'd barely be able to wait until he opened. I've learned to jump on local restaurants that have come recommended to me by locals. If you've ever loved a Thai dish in your life this man can give you everything you ever needed and more. Never hesitate to eat this food, and stop expecting sweetheart table service, those times are long gone. Stop whining. As you pull up the first thing you notice is the quaint curb appeal of this amazing Thai and Cuban restaurant. The second thing you notice is the neighboring business who's sign logo distinctly resembles a chic-fil-a. Weird. As you walk in one is greeted with a flavorful aroma and an almost boutique style dining room with the gentle sound of bossa nova playing in the background. The person who takes your order is a kind patient man named Alex who always seems happy to be there and is willing to make suggestions from the menu. His friendly demeanor is relaxing which is a nice contrast with the personality of the chef. He will usually make eye contact with each guest and sometime, if they are not too busy, the owner will come out and make conversation. While the chef is from Cuba, his wife is from Thailand and they visit her home country at least once a year. (Check for winter closures.) The food comes out and it looks amazing. The flavors crafted from a blend of authentic ingredients and well practiced techniques. Each item on the menu is worth trying and the charm of this restaurant keeps people coming back. Stumbled into unexpected food artistry. This chef knows how to cook Thai! Wow! Support this business! The nice decorations caught our eye as we passed Curry & CoCo. We walked by on the way to another place we've been a few times. Thankfully the thing we wanted wasn't on the menu anymore at our original (pub & seafood) destination, because we found something way better after the friendly man took our order. Drunken noodles were beautifully and artfully done. Colors popped when you opened the container and fresh basil, peppers, mushrooms and tomatoes were accented with a perfect sauce and spice level. A new high mark for Pad Kee Mao. The yellow curry was exactly what I hoped for. The fresh veggie/tofu rolls made the wife happy. read more

Worst hours and confusing when they're open. Online will say one thing and then they will have something posted on the door that differs from when they're actually supposed to be opened. The two times I was able to eat there the pad Thai noodles were hard and burnt and the coconut shrimp was so hard it was almost inedible. Some of the best Thai food I've had in the PNW. Tried two different curries and both were super flavorful. Big chunks of lemongrass, pieces of kaffir lime leaf, a chunk of galangal, scads of Thai basil. Ordered it with some "prik nam pla" which really caught their ear. "Oh, have you been to Thailand?" Well, sorry, not yet but I hope to...but the prik nam pla was some of the tastiest I've ever had anywhere. Hope they aren't mad I'm spreading the news but a little bit of that will put your curry over the top!
