It was a long time ago (in high school) that I was a regular for the beef cantonese at this little Chinese restaurant called Golden Star. Recently, I got a craving for this specific dish (I don't really know why). Later, I was visiting my mom, and we ended up at this restaurant. Not much has changed, almost exactly the way I remember it. The portions may be a little smaller (understandably, I guess, given the times we live in), but the food still tasted pretty good. I appreciate the waitress being willing to bring the veggie fried rice (it was not listed on the menu), and I liked the amount of vegetables in the rice (along with some egg!). My mom enjoyed her meal and also ate some of my rice, which she said tasted good. read more

This is my go-to to-go. We have never thrown out leftovers from this place so there you go. I have sampled through quite a few of their dishes. Some highlights...General Tso's is very flavorful and the chicken is always tender. Saucy without being too saucy. Very much one of my comfort foods. The egg foo young is not like the slimy kind with all the extra bean sprouts. It's a disc of flavor. Straight up delicious. I also really like their lo mein because they use the really skinny lo mein noodles instead of the like spaghetti noodles that some places use. The crab puffs are my most favorite crab puffs from everywhere. And the bbq pork is usually super fresh. Might have to get some noodles for dinner read more

I was really surprised to see four stars at a Chinese place, so I was very hopeful we were going to get a good meal. Unfortunately that wasn't the case at this establishment. It's our last day in Astoria and we decided, after a day of sightseeing, we would order takeout. We got the curry chicken and two egg rolls. The curry chicken was okay in flavor, but the curry flavor was very mild. Not a whole lot of flavor. My biggest complaint was there was hardly any chicken in our dish. Like maybe 2 ounces at best. It was saucey with a lot of bell peppers and onions. The egg rolls were massive and hard with mushy veggies inside. Basically I didn't eat my meal. It's a no go for me at this place. :( read more

Aw who knew I would find a nice Chinese restaurant that would taste like the food my mother makes. MIND BLOWN! I honestly thought I would find nothing but seafood in Astoria but this place is the best. It's not much outside but once you go inside it would feel like you have taken a trip to China. Most Americans won't do a trip to China in person for almost their lifetime but this place takes the cake. In terms of food I have no qualms except that they could step up to the plate a little bit. I had the curry chicken and the chicken is not at the quality as I would see at home. It's okay because the price of food is a lot lower than what you would pay in California. Yes large portions indeed. Good for the Oregonian or California who's looking for a quick getaway in Chinook Washington or any of the nearby Oregon beaches. read more

Okay again the city of Astoria shows what's wrong in Astoria as far as restaurants are concerned. No consistency! I used to blame the restaurants but if you can only list two or three restaurants as good to great, it has to be environmentally caused. Case in point The Golden Star on Bond and 5th or 6th. We've eaten there since 2012 off and on and it's been a roller coaster of events. Once or twice fabulous, outstanding, wonderful even. Not so for quite sometime. But my wife and I after having a dreadful night out the night before decided to give it ago once more. Should have saved the money! Wife ordered Kung Pao chicken and I ordered the Golden Star Special Chow Mein . ChowMein , wait let me go back. We also ordered Hot and Sour soup to begin the meal, not too bad but could have used a bit more white pepper. I asked the server and was told no white pepper only black pepper! The finer Oriental restaurants put white pepper in the shakers on the tables! Not a big strike but a strike nonetheless. Back to the main courses, Kung Pao total miss, not much chicken, not much heat, just plain blah! The chicken was cut so small it was difficult to distinguish it from the vegetables, and it was dry or over cooked. We usually go to Kalama for Chinese food and it is well worth the drive, but not in 90* weather. Okay now the Special Chow Mein, lots of celery but otherwise not too bad. The stock was weak but the other components were okay. I would have liked more Bok Choy than celery and more meat, chicken, beef, or shrimp. Alas inconsistent product! We'll take a drive next time we want Chinese food! I advise you to do the same. read more

Used to come here a lot when my dad lived in Astoria. Haven't been here for awhile but stopped in for dinner on our way back to Portland. Ordered pecan shrimp and green beans with beef. Good sized plates and flavor was good on both. Noticed I didn't recognize anyone here and found out the former owners retired a couple years ago and there's different owners now. Food was still very good but felt like the warmth of the staff was lacking. Not much personal interaction at all. It was much better than a burger would have been though. Ordered take-out and the staff was very friendly and the food was delicious. I particularly appreciated the add-ons that they provide for take-out. All the sauce and crunchy noodles that you need to complete your meal. Would definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for good portions at a great price. Looked like good reviews so we tried it. On the menu it says "we are not responsible for stolen items.". The reviews showed colorful mixed vegetable plate and noodles which is what I expect with chow mein but my meal came and I thought there was a mistake. It was mainly bean sprouts and a bland sauce that filled the plate the chow mein was the deep fried kind you get in a can at the grocery store and the pork was flavorless ground pork. The "special" sesame fried chicken was also flavorless but at least they served it with the dipping sauces for the BBQ pork which clashed in the mouth but at least made it tast like something. The waiter was friendly but not knowledgeable about the menu. We will not be going back. read more

Their wonton soup is the absolute best in Astoria! Their lounge is perfect. Just what you would want on a rainy day. Cozy, corner booth, 1950s decor, what more can you ask for .... Orange chicken is better at Hong Kong, but outside of that, Golden Star rules! read more

We traveled to Astoria from Oahu , Hawaii we just decided to give it a try it was great we ordered the two choice pork fried rice and sweet sour chicken. They also gave us hot tea which was good with the food. Our food was excellent my husband finished all his I wasn't really to hungry because we had pizza earlier at Geno's. Traveling is great and it's good to find a great place to eat when you really don't know where to go I give them five stars because we also got egg flower soup before our food came it was delicious. If you haven't tried their food I'm telling you it's worth every penny. Give them a try you won't be disappointed . read more

Some of the worst Chinese food ever....place was crowded when we arrived.... We ordered 2 plates of chow mein chicken/beef plus a ginger beef dish and a combo plate... The chow mein was basically a large dish of mung bean sprouts with minimal meat and a type of crispy fried noodle..... The ginger beef was tasty but mainly a plate full of onion .... The combo plate had fried rice which was dry rice with a few morsels of bbq pork no veggies and a miniscule scrid of egg.... Very very unappetizing....... read more

Decidedly not a fan. My friend and I came in for cocktails while the restaurant was almost entirely empty. My friend waited 18 minutes between his empty cocktail and any further service. Dying this 18 minute period, a server checked on every customer but skipped us for some reason. Then another server came in, stood behind the bar we were sitting at, immediately turned her back and worked on dishes, counting money, etc before finally turning around 5 minutes later to ask if we'd like our (obviously empty) drinks refreshed. Maybe a fluke but I'm not coming back. If you can't take two seconds to check on your very few customers, I'll spend my money elsewhere. read more

Great little lounge area with great drinks at good prices. I got the the wonton soup which was very tasty and had ordered a large amount of food todo to bring home to family. I feel as though the food would have been a lot better eating at the restaurant while it's hot and fresh. Once I got it home it was a bit soggy (to be expected). The one thing I did not expect was the chow mien I ordered had noodles in it, it's was literally just sprouts with a bunch of other veggies in a sauce. Also ordered a shrimp dish and the shrimp were tiny and there was maybe 6 or 7 in the whole container. I will go back but will eat in person in the future. read more

Oh how I love love love midcentury interiors. The lounge is amazing! It's a roomy space with big corner booths, awesome period lighting and great woodwork all in keeping with theme. Nice wood plank ceilings. Such a cute little gem preserved in time. The owners have a lot pride in their establishment and it shows. They could turn down the sound on their video poker or play a little music to drown it out, but that was the only thing amiss with the ambience. The food is great! Doesn't look like much from the street but if you want some delicious Chinese food at a good cost I'd say it's one of the best options around! We always enjoy the food and service when we dine in! Our go to order usually consists of a mix of sweet-and-sour pork, beef lo mein, pork fried rice, sesame chicken and lemon chicken. Each of these are seriously delicious and come in large portions. We love that if we make an order to go they keep the sauce on the side so our meat doesn't get soggy. Would highly recommend! read more

We were visiting Astoria and craving Chinese. We read the reviews (the better reviews are older) and thought it would be worth a try. The waitress was friendly enough, but the food left a lot to be desired. I ordered the almond chicken combo. The egg flower soup was more like having a runny nose and swallowing... the almond chicken was prepared like I've never seen it: battered chicken tenders with gravy over the top. The bbq pork was cold and stiff, and the pork fried rice was very dry and obviously left over from who knows when. There is no excuse not to serve fresh, hot food. The pot stickers and egg rolls were delicious! I ordered chicken chow mein. It was not good. This is the second local restaurant that used rice noodles (over cooked) rather than egg noodles so the chow mein was soggy. Is this a local thing? At any rate I'll definitely try another dish because the rest of the order was tasty. read more
