I've eaten here several times and a review is overdue. If you're seeking Burmese cuisine then this is the restaurant to try. The food is very tasty and authentic compared to the other popular Burmese restaurants in San Francisco. The owners are really nice and service is pleasant. Their outdoor seating is in the back of the restaurant away from the exhaust and noise from the street traffic which is a huge plus. We ordered the following: 1) Makyee Ywat Thok which is a salad made with Tamarind Leaf. It's so tasty and better than the common Tea Leaf Salad that can be found at other restaurants. 2) Chin Baung Hin Yay which is a sour soup that has a chunks of tender white fish. 3) Chicken Chana Dal had a strong cinnamon flavor. The dish is tasty but a common dish. 4) Spicy Pork Jerk - has Balangchuang sprinkled over the jerk pork. Balangchuang is a fried mixture of ground dried shrimp paste, chili flakes and fried shallots. It adds a nice texture to the chewy jerk pork texture. The photos of the first two items doesn't do justice to the taste of the dishes and you must try them if you like sour and authentic Burmese dishes. read more

Perfect place if you want outdoor dining, that is NOT on the street. They have a back patio - it is not the absolute cutest thing, but very outdoorsy/socially distant safe and there are heat lamps. The appetizers were the stars for me - the Tea Leaf Salad and the Samosas, and the Roti (though I wish there was a dipping sauce for the roti). My husband and I split the pumpkin pork curry which was dry and needed more sauce. Just wasn't up to the caliber of Burma Superstar or Mandalay. Our server has issues with understanding questions about menu, that we wanted a glass if ice (not bucket of ice for the bottle of wine) - etc, but really it was fine. Really flavorful Burmese food in a very homey setting! Currently (as of May 2021) they only have outdoor dining in the backyard of the restaurant. They have a cute tent covering setup with lights and plenty of heat lamps. There were lots of beautiful plants by the tables and in the outdoor space. We got the garlic chicken, garlic noodles, potato curry, and tea leaf salad. The garlic chicken was tender and the garlic flavor wasn't overpowering. The chicken is in a very soupy/watery sauce and the portions are generous. The potato curry was a savory, not at all spicy curry and it was flavorful. A very thick curry that wasn't runny at all. The garlic noodles were a great, chewy texture. They came with a generous portion of meat mixed in and had a strong garlic flavor. The tea leaf salad was definitely on the bitter side, but still good. It has a really interesting mix of textures. All the dishes were priced really cheaply, especially for the portions and in comparison to other Burmese food places in SF. The parking is easy as it's in a quiet part of Richmond. I love Burmese food and always love trying new spots! This one I thought would be really great but it was ok. I've tried Burma superstar and mandalay and this one would definitely be #3 for me. It's not that anything isn't good, it's just not as good as the other options. Fiancé and I started off with the roti, which as a starter is always a winner! The roti was incredibly flaky and came with a great curry dipping sauce, it did have one too many potatoes for my liking so I didn't eat the potatoes. Fiancé got the mohinga and usually he loves it but this one he felt like it wasn't as flavorful and he didn't like the noodles that came with it. I didn't try it so I can't comment. I got the Khao soy which had a pretty decent curry flavor and I liked the noodles in it. Some pieces of chicken were a bit on the dry side but overall, a solid dish. Outdoor dining opened in SF again so I wanted to go out, enjoy the rain-free weather, and eat at a mom & pop shop. I ultimately decided to come here because I enjoyed the food last time but their private patio sealed the deal. You used to be able to walk-in for outdoor dining but now they require reservations. Make sure you do that online before heading over! I really wanted to get the fish chowder again but I also wanted to try something new, the struggle!! I ended up deciding on the mix vegetables curry with a side of roti. The curry was packed full of a variety of veggies - bamboo shoots, carrots, potato, pumpkin, okra, cauliflower, and green beans. It was perfect because I wanted something on the healthier side after eating so much junk yesterday. The sauce was nice and thick which made it perfect for scooping up with the roti. Granted, I got some of the more popular items, so that might be a biased selection, but yum! Signature Tea Leaf Salad: You can't eat Burmese food without getting a tea leaf salad. There's just something magical about the funky fermented tea leaves and all those various crunchy bits. It doesn't feel like a boring leafy salad at all. Garlic Egg Noodles (Sei Jyet Kau Swel): Just as garlicky as Vietnamese garlic noodles, but a much nicer texture A thin, flat and chewy noodle. Much more fun than the lo mein style noodles. The pork appeared to be medallions of a slow and tender roast. Full of flavor at not tough like quick stir fried pork. Fish Chowder (Moh Hinga): Not too fishy, but that's perfectly fine in my book. The broth seemed more like a light and spicy Thai soup than a thick New England chowder. Tons of flavor, but kinda sparse on the fish bits. What I really loved were all those deep fried toppings, adding tons of flavor and crunch. Super flavorful and delicious cuisine! I can't speak to the authenticity since I have little experience trying Burmese food and have never been to Burma, but I can vouch that whatever flavors they served were just out of this world, very unique blend of spices that is hard to describe, mostly savory, some spicy, some tangy. Bursts of flavor is what comes to mind. I was too excited to try one of my favorite items, the tea leaf salad, which did not disappoint although was somewhat different than the usual, less tea leaves and lettuce and more nuts , beans and grains. We also got the ginger spice pork, delicious, the sour leaf bamboo (great if you like sour), the shrimp garlic egg noodle (great fragrant garlicky flavor) and basil fish (fish was unexciting but basil curry sauce interesting). Coconut rice was delicious. For once, I forgot to pay attention to the price, so opinions here are based only on taste without consideration to value. The portions did seem on the smaller size, though, so unless the prices also matched which I sort of doubt m, I would probably have thought this place was on the pricey side, but that's not confirmed give that I forgot to pay attention to the price. We were there at 5pm when it opened so service was prompt although wasn't checked upon much. Casual ambience was fine, we had the restaurant to ourselves from beginning to end. So happy we decided to walk into Burmese Kitchen after walking along Geary for a little bit. It's a smaller restaurant but it's very nicely decorated with beautiful umbrellas hanging from their ceiling. We were greeted and sat immediately. We ordered the roti and potato curry and it was delicious. The roti was fresh and super soft. We then ordered the chicken curry with potatoes and string beans with biryani rice. Literally all the dishes were delicious and packed with flavor. My favorite was the biryani rice, you could literally smell and taste all the spices and flavors with every bite. Love Burmese Kitchen! We used them for a large gathering of family and friends (16 people, originally 18). They are perfect for a casual get-together with delicious food. The manager took such great care of us and my event, double-checking to make sure we would be happy. Because I had a large group, I called in about a reservation and then had a few check-ins with him before the day. He guided me on how much to order to ensure there wouldn't be excessive or too little food, that they had everything we wanted in stock, and to make sure that the food and drinks were ready to go quickly. The menu pleased those of us who were gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan (and meat eaters), and they have an outdoor patio large enough to safely hold us all and have us sit together at a long table, which is no small feat in these COVID-y times! They have several heat lamps too (tip: dress warm and do ask them to turn the lamps on somewhat early on a chilly Richmond night!). You can ring the bell for quick service outside, they were very attentive. Parking is challenging in the Richmond district so most of us Uber-ed in or carpooled. The food was excellent with generous portions and everyone loved it. My favorites are the tea leaf salad and the pork with pumpkin. Cannot recommend them highly enough! read more

Wife and I decided to go visit my brother for his, and my wife's, birthday so I asked him to recommend a restaurant that could accomodate our gluten allergies. He suggested Burmese Kitchen so we went. We live in Walnut Creek and we have quite a few Burmese restaurants that are excellent, but this restaurant is hands down the best Burmese my wife and I have ever had. The owner, who is such a nice man, was a joy to talk to as well. We opened 2 bottles of wine that we brought, and with corkage as well as 6 dishes, the bill was ridiculously low. If you are in the City, and want incredible Burmese food, this in my humble opinion, is the best. I would actually drive from Walnut Creek to have dinner again. read more

I love Burmese food and have been to a couple in Irving and Sunset and didn't disappoint. I rarely write bad reviews because usually it's things that are acceptable mistake and was an off day. After reading the reviews-both good and bad, I really need to leave a note here. I placed an order with them via ubereats because of the ratings on the app, but am very disappointed upon receiving my order. 1. They lack a reasonable portion size--dishonest. It looks really like someone has taken bites out of it. The portion size I received are ridiculous for charging $15.95 for the Lemongrass beef and $14.95 each for the Garlic Chicken & $14.95 for the tea leaf salad. The first two dishes I ordered make up little less than half of the small take out box (6in length x 4.5in width x 1in deep) and the salad seems to be more appropriate size as a lunch special for the size. Perhaps they should consider making that an option for a kids menu, maybe? 2. Service I ended up calling the store about my one of a kind experience and they educated me that there portion sizes are standard and no ones has EVER complained about them (well, the reviews do have a common theme). They told me to call uber eats to pick up the order because that's the way it is. Really either " take it or leave it". 3. Flavor I am speechless. No flavor to the beef and the chicken is dry and literally served in soupy water bath. The salad im not going to eat (after reading review about having worm in broccoli). They gave me shredded cabbage lol. Ones I've eaten in the past have way more ingredients and served with shredded Romain lettuce. Pure disappointment. Really an eye opening experience for me. She has many traditional specialities on the menu I have not seen anywhere else like the tamarind leaf salad. At the moment they only have outdoor seating in the back. You don't have to worry about it being too cold though, because there is a heater next to each table. We ordered the crispy pea salad with chicken, chicken curry, and prawn with pumpkin. As well as two orders of coconut rice to go with our entrees. After a real disappointing dinner the night before, I just knew I needed something special. At home, we don't have any Burmese restaurants so I knew they would at least serve me up some food that I don't get at home. True enough, I ordered the coconut chicken soup with noodles, and the tea leaf salad. Both really appropriate choices and legit "I can't get this" options. This was for delivery, and they arrived snappy and things were piping hot and wrapped up well. The portions are not massive, but the prices are pretty reasonable so with the two entrees I was mostly full. The tea leaf salad was really solid, with complex flavors and textures. The coconut chicken soup wasn't too sweet, but also lacked a lot of depth or seasoning, but only just. I wanted a little more punch to it, but it was still pretty tasty and I liked that I got to add the noodles in myself for optimum freshness. Positive experience, for sure. Out of the many Burmese restaurants in the Richmond District, Burmese Kitchen is one of my top two. It's funny that they were so close to my office, and then they moved to my neighborhood.. I guess I was meant to dine here! My friend from NYC never had Burmese food, so this place came to mind as Burma Superstar always has a long line, and we were already on the 38. We started with the roti and potato curry. The roti is so good, especially with the comforting curry. I wish there was more roti for the price (plus there was a lot of curry left over), but that bread is pretty filling. I got the eggs in tamarind sauce, and the coconut rice per recommendation. It was delicious! You get three hard boiled eggs in a savory, tangy curry, and it goes really well with the coconut rice. I couldn't finish it, but I wish I did because it did not fare well as leftovers (except for the rice). So if you order this dish, make sure you eat it there. I would order this dish again though, because it's $8.50, much cheaper than the $13.50 for two eggs with curry I've had at another restaurant. The food is quick, and service is friendly. And I have to give them props for their decor. The wall is lined with paper plates that are dyed in different, bold colors. A good diy option for decor on a budget. The space is small, but it's never crowded, which I like. I can't stand having the feeling of being rushed to eat dinner. I read some of the other reviews regarding the tea leaf salad, and I will have to try that next time I'm here. I'm not an expert on Burmese food, but it seems like that salad is the key indicator for what makes a Burmese restaurant great. read more

Went with a student I mentored who immigrated from Burma in 2014. He said this is the most authentic Burmese food that he's had and that Burma Superstar was like the Chipotle of Burmese food. We came here last weekend for a late lunch. Though it was closer to 2pm they were still somewhat busy... so I can imagine that they would be crowded during peak time. I loved that the restaurant labeled all their items that had gluten in the menu, which made my experience a lot easier. We decided to go with the veggie soup (which was like a thinner yellow curry with all kinds of veggies ( okra, eggplant, pumpkin, peppers, carrots, potatoes, etc.). The flavor was good, but not something I would order again. We also shared the chicken biriyani. That was delicious!! We're really glad to have ordered it. Though the dish was shareable, I thought it would have come with more and was slightly disappointed because of it. However, the two chicken pieces that it came with were sizable and beautifully marinated. Same with the rice, some bites had a lot of great sweet masala and onions. I am curious to try out some of the other chicken dishes that I saw on the menu, though I don't totally agree with the pricing. Yummy! Roasted ginger chicken and tea leaf salad was spot on perfect to share on a cold August Thursday early evening right after work. We were hungry. My friend enjoyed a glass of wine, I enjoy a cup of hot tea. A patios is always preferable, however, we were cold, tired, and hungry and we were ready to order and eat. We were looking for a quick bite that was still open in the area while we were in Richmond and this was such a happy find! Their food tasted really authentic and was well priced for what you get. We were so hungry I didn't get a chance to take a picture of my food but I got the Nan Gyi Dok which is my go-to Burmese food order.
