My wife and I have been getting takeout here for years at this point -- best butter chicken and garlic naan I've ever had. My wife's choice is their lamb biryani and also has never been disappointed. We'll get their momo sometimes and they're super soft and flavorful. Also, one time they forgot to put the butter chicken into our takeout bag so we called once we got home and realized. The owner or manager then personally delivered the butter chicken to us himself (we did offer to come by but he insisted). So, very thoughtful service as well. Delicious food and our server (Yuzin?) was very sweet! Standouts from our meal were the buff (water buffalo) momo, ajwain paratha, and the mixed grill. Momos: delicious - the flavors were beautifully balanced and the sauce helped tie the whole dish together. Ajwain paratha - this has such an addicting crisp and chew and a lovely subtle spice to it that I ended up enjoying it plain. Mixed grill - came with chicken, lamb, salmon, and shrimp. Salmon was a tad overcooked for my liking, but everything else on the plate was cooked to perfection. Chicken and lamb were juicy and tender and I loved the smoky char from the clay oven. We will definitely need to come back to try some of their other dishes. We admittedly ventured over here for the restaurant next door, but with a 2 hour wait we looked up the other restaurants close by and decided on this one. I was not disappointed and am glad we ended up here. It was a happy accident for real. It's sweetly decorated on the inside, you can tell it was done with care and intention. The service is just as nice. Friendly, warm, and welcoming. Our food was delicious. Everything was fresh and seasoned well. Many restaurants tend to go overboard with salt and this one does not for sure. Our favorite dish was the tandoori chicken. It was honestly the best we've had in a long time. The skin of the dumpling was thicker than I preferred. The meat inside lacked flavor. The Mixed Grill consisted of salmon, chicken, lamb, and shrimp. The salmon was my fave - it was so tender! We found this spot because it was located right next to San Tung. We were looking at the menu since we were waiting anyways (luckily they had it on their window haha), and we were pretty interested so we went for lunch the next day! The staff were all really friendly and quick. For example, when we asked if they'd be able to cut the samosas for us, they gave us mini samosas and cut them in half that was perfect amount for our party of 5. We ordered so much food that I don't entirely remember what we got, but the standouts were definitely the curry, samosas, and there was something lamb that we liked that my aunt who usually doesn't like lamb, really liked as well! Our party of 12 stumbled upon this place as we originally intended to eat at the place next door. The decor was pretty. We were seated immediately. Service was great, the server constantly cleared plates, filled our waters and was very attentive. Food was amazing! Filled with flavor and fresh. Our entire group loved it and were all so happy that we chose to eat here instead. We honestly enjoyed it more than our normal Indian restaurant in our hometown. There are several Indian restaurants in our neighborhood, but Gurung Kitchen is now one of my favorites. It's a little bit of a walk for us so we haven't visited despite walking past it many times on doggie walks. We got the gobi machurian to share and I got the thali with goat. The gobi machurian was okay. I prefer dry manchurian, whereas this one has a thick sauce, so it was a little soggy. But the flavor was good. My thali was great, the main reason I want to come back again. I feel like when I get thalis at other places, it's just a few items plopped together and made hours ago. This thali had small portions of 8-9 things. I liked the couple of pickled vegetables that I've never had. There was rice as well as a crispy cracker (I don't know the name). Having spent time in many villages in the Gorkha district and having close Gurung friends, I can say with confidence that Gurung Kitchen is absolutely perfect. The food is incredible -- traditional, authentic, and beautifully prepared. Every dish feels like it was made with care and love, just like in Nepal. We felt like trying a new restaurant in the neighborhood, so we decided to try Gurung Kitchen. Heads up! Prices are a bit high and portions aren't big. But food is flavorful and filling especially if you order stew and naan bread. So despite smaller portions, it's rich that you'll feel full quicker than expected. We ordered chicken vindaloo, lamb tikka masala, garlic naan and onion naan. The vindaloo was a bit salty and chicken was kinda dry. 3/5 The tikka masala was good, flavorful and not salty. Though the lamb wasn't soft and tender as I would have liked. 3.5/5 Garlic naan was good and had perfect texture and chew. 5/5 Onion naan was tasty but soggy. 3/5 Maybe we ordered wrong? But it seemed they missed the mark on most of the things that we ordered. When making stews, I've learned to cook the meat and set it aside so the meat doesn't overcook. After the stew is done, you would add the meat back in and then serve. I think the meat got overcooked in the stew and was in there too long. The onion naan had onions that might not have been sweated out before being in the naan which the juices would come out as it cooked making the bread soggy and less likely to crisp up. Hopefully the cook will improve on his techniques to give customers a better experience when dining here. I wish I could have given them a rave review like many others, but our experience wasn't quite the same. Service was ok. I can't say she was friendly nor was she rude. She just took our order. She wasn't chatty or friendly. We didn't get refills of water. Though the water cup given was pretty large. But it was empty after our meal. Food took a bit since naan bread was prepared fresh. This place is lovely. This is a family run joint - husband, wife and brother they care and it shows in the quality of food and service. The staff were friendly and happy to discuss food options and to make suggestions. The lassi and chai - all home made with subtle hints of cardamon. The food is really good. All home made. I came here on a whim since San Tung was closed since I was also curious about trying Nepalese food. We ordered the pani puri, jhol momo, chicken korma curry, and lamb biryani. I was a big fan of the jhol momo soup because of how nutty it was. I've had jhol momo elsewhere and I thought the soup was always tomato based but I preferred it sesamey and creamy like this place! All the other food was good but not impressive. I wasn't a big fan of the curry. It was too creamy and heavy on the dairy and wasn't as flavorful. However I liked how there chicken was tender and initially pan fried. What impressed me most was the service. The waiter was really friendly, and noticed that I preferred to eat spicy food so he gave me a little sauce cup of spice from their kitchen. The lamb vindaloo was both medium spicy and flavorful. The seafood curry was packed with tender calamari and other seafood; it was medium spicy and flavorful. Both curries are relatively smaller portions. We ordered two kinds of naan: regular and a cherry/coconut filled naan. Both very good and especially the latter. Also, a bowl of basmati rice was summoned; it was well made and tasty. $56 with tax and tip. Tip: two light eaters could skip the basmati rice. Bathrooms: ok barely. Was curious about some nepalese/indian in the sunset as there aren't many options. This used to be where san tung's seconds restaurant was to be located. The place was somewhat quiet. We sat down immediately and service was pretty standard and not very talkative and had plenty of time to order. The decoration is really vibrant. The food was decent. I made the mistake of ordering the johl momos which were too citrusy in my opinion. The garlic naan was well seasoned and went very well with the palak paneer which was pretty balanced. Rice is an extra charge of 2-3$ which is a little disappointing considering the small size of it. The mango lassi was satisfying but the paper straw really melts into it with the texture. Overall it was an average experience. It's great having another Indian restaurant in the sunset. I will try the dhido next time I come in. read more
