Chicken Mango Chutney, Thakali Thali Chicken
    Amber G.

Ordered as take out, giving 4 stars because the chicken momo are fantastic, taste super fresh, and they're huge!!! One order comes with 8 very large momos and sauce, I'd definitely come back for this! I didn't love the thakali thali chicken, the rice and chicken were a bit dry and the included sides were okay. Not necessarily bad but just not my favorite. The momos alone are very filling and worth going for though.

Sagamatha is the official Nepali name for Mount Everest, meaning "Godess of the Sky". Tried this restaurant recently for delivery and dined in. What's good: *butter chicken - it was delicious. *saag paneer - good. Even tho hubby ordered this mild, it's still spicy. *garlic cheese naan - it tasted good, thought it would be more cheese stuffed but it's not. What can be improved: *shrimp chow mein - chow mein was delicious but the shrimp was overcooked and dry. *tandoor chicken - too salty, maybe dial back the salt a bit. *mango lassi - tasted a bit off, maybe bad batch? Service was nice but a little slow and we saw lots of delivery orders, so maybe that's why.

Was in the area and decided to give this new Indian/Nepalese restaurant a try. Overall the dishes were delicious and flavorful, seemed very authentic. The ambiance of the restaurant was very casual and had plenty of seats available when we went there for lunch around 1pm. Service was quite friendly and quick. The waitress brought over waters as we sat down along with menus. She did come over a few times to refill waters and to check on our table. We got the: 1) Pani Puri(golgappa)(7/10) - This was very good! The pani puri exterior was light and crispy along with the fresh and aromatic fillings. The spicy mint water did a good job of complimenting the filling. Overall a good appetizer! Came with a total of 6 pani puris. 2) Garlic Naan(7.5/10) - Light and fluffy naan and the garlic was present but not overwhelming. A very good naan to accompany our main dishes. An order comes with 4 pieces of naan. 3) Chicken Chhiola Set(6.6/10) - My friend order this to give it a try and it was just okay. The curry/sauce that came with the chicken was flavorful and decent. Chicken was cooked well and still juicy. It comes with a Chiura(beaten rice), which kind of resembles oatmeal. There isn't any flavor to it, until you mix it together with the sauced chicken. Texture wise, it reminded me of small corn flakes without the corn flavor; it was an interesting dish. There were also 2 sides. A curry spiced cucumber salad; this was lightly spiced with curry and was refreshing as a palette cleanser. The cucumbers were still crunchy. The other side was a sort of black soybean salad; we weren't a fan of this given how hard the beans were. The flavor was good, but those beans felt like that can break a tooth. 4) Chili Badel(7.8/10) - This was my favorite dish that we had! Very flavorful and spicy(I opted for spicy level and it was just the right amount). The wild boar was pretty good, not gamey at all. It was on the leaner side for certain portions and resembled jerky a bit, but was still chewable. The savory spicy sauce pepper sauce that accompanied the wild boar was what made the dish! 5) Kheer(Rice Pudding)(7/10) - This was given to use as a complimentary dessert by the waitress. A decent dessert, lightly sweetened a with a hint spices(I think it was cardamom). My friend wasn't a fan given she didn't like the spice, but overall I did enjoy it as it was a nice refresher after a somewhat heavy and savory meal. Overall, an interesting dive into Nepalese dishes that were more authentic and less known. Would come back to give their other specialties a try when I'm feeling a bit more adventurous such as their buffalo or goat intestines dish!

    Thakkali thaali with chicken curry.

We went there for an early dinner on a Saturday afternoon and parking was I ordered the Thakkali thaali with goat curry. The sides were all as good as I had hoped and although they served the chicken curry, I didn't mind it so much as the wait staff was sweet enough to acknowledge their mistake and offered to take the food back and bring back what I had ordered in the first place. Of all the sides, my favorite was the lentil soup, also known as daal. The mustard and potato pickle, a uniquely Nepali dish usually served cold, also tasted quite authentic. If you're looking for an authentic Nepali meal, definitely do stop by.

I felt like I was back home in Nepal again after eating at this restaurant. My sister and I checked out this restaurant and we were shocked at how many authentic dishes they served and they tasted just like how it's made back home in Nepal. Definitely will be coming back and would recommend checking this place out!

Thakali Thali Mutton (after I'd eaten a few bites and remembered I wanted to take a picture)
    Sanae R.

A new restaurant on Geary! I don't know a ton about Nepalese food but I really liked it. Like Indian food but different in ways I have trouble describing. I got the Thakali Thali Mutton, I wanted to try a bit of a bunch of stuff because it was my first time there. It was a *lot* of food. Even more than it looks in the photo because those slices of cucumber were also unusually large. But though it was a lot of food it wasn't too heavy either, not very oily. There was a little dish of what seemed like oil that I wasn't too sure what to do with, maybe it's for people who like more oil on their food? Prices overall seem very reasonable. Next time I'll try some of the more unique dishes they have, there was a lot that I'd never had before. I usually get food medium spicy, I had a feeling I should get it mild here and I was right. It's very quiet right now, hopefully it gets busier because I hope it sticks around.

Lamb Tikka Masala (rice included), Chicken Biryani, Garlic Naan x2
    Rachel H.

The lamb was incredibly tender (unlike my experience at some other places!), and the tikka masala sauce was super flavorful and delicious. Garlic naan was good overall, though a bit too soft and oily for my taste. The chicken biryani was solid and satisfying! The yogurt sauce was a nice touch. Service was decent--not overbearing, which I appreciated! Very humble storefront, no wait on a Saturday evening, and overall an excellent meal. And super reasonable price! Would definitely come back.

No other place offers Dhido! Very unique.

I was walking by Sagarmatha this morning and noticed that the restaurant owners along with friends and family were performing grand opening rites. So I had to come back for dinner and drop the first Yelp review for this new Nepali restaurant on Geary! BTW the restaurant name "Sagarmatha' is the Nepali name for Mt. Everest. The menu is very legit and they have several unique Nepali dishes. Dhido for example is reminiscent of Fufu but millet flour based and is eaten instead of rice in many parts of Nepal. Never seen it in the US! And then they have the obligatory Momos and Chowmein items which I will come back and try. Today I decided to go with a classic mutton Thali and a completely unique goat intestine dish called "Khasi ko Bhutan" that I've never seen at any other Nepalese restaurant. Both items were very authentic and perfectly spiced and cooked just right. Reminded me of my home stay in Nepal. Bone in mutton curry which is the centerpiece of the thali was as good as it gets with the fluffy rice. Accompanying daal and mixed vegetable thali items were also fantastic. And the Kheer dessert that comes with the thali was also excellent with the right level of consistency and sweetness. There have been a half dozen Nepali restaurants that have popped up in SF over the last year or so. Most feel obligated to overwhelm their menus with classic North Indian fare rather than Nepali dishes. I really appreciate that Sagarmatha dares to offer truly unique and authentic Nepali fare. Can't wait to go back and explore more of their menu.

    Chicken Tikka Masala
    May N.

We've been looking for a good Indian, Himalayan/Nepalese restaurant in the city and after trying so many disappointing ones, so glad we found this one! Ordered a light lunch -Baingan bharta, chicken tikka masala & garlic naan. Everything was so flavorful! Chicken was very tender, eggplant had the smoky flavor you want and the naan was so crispy & light. The owners opened 4 months ago and have definitely improved the interior of what was formerly Bistro Caliente. And they're super nice. Can't wait to return & try other dishes!

Enjoyed my fav buff sukuti & buff chili over the weekend. Did not like momo so much but good service made it up. Made my day with day complimentary dessert. Can't wait to go back.

    Thakali Thali Mutton

We went for lunch last week when we were in sf and everyone was starving, so we decided to try this place based on a recommendation and I'm so glad we did! The food was amazing. We ordered four Thakali chicken sets, one Thakali mutton set, and some naan. Everything was cooked perfectly. I've been to places where the meat has a really strong tomato taste, but here it was seasoned just right and had that perfect chewy texture I love. The service was awesome from start to finish, and the interior was super nice too. I'm not from SF, but I'm so happy I got to try this new Nepali restaurant, definitely recommend checking it out! The buff momo and mutton khaja set were outstanding, and the service was excellent. This restaurant has officially become one of my favorites. Highly recommended!

Starting off with what was good though, their mango lassi is tasty and momo chili dumplings are so flavorful with great texture. I would say they excel at their doughs in general because their naan was also great (especially the onion stuffed naan). Their Sewa/kale chaat was also passable (but would love if the kale pieces were bigger so that beans don't cause it to be as soggy after a while). That being said, it seems like they could do a little better with packing a flavor punch for their other dishes. Their shrimp tandoori was good but nothing to write home about. Lamb biriyani was also good but could've been stronger in flavor. Chicken tikka masala seemed like it was lacking something (but not sure what...), and the artichoke pakora didn't taste like artichoke? Thought it was still decent... I also think their tamarind chutney could be a bit thicker in consistency (maybe like that of the mango lassi), the mint chutney was nice.
