First time here, we had a party of 12. We were sat at two separate tables. The experience started a little rocky with the original server and there was an incident where we had an extra chair and so we moved it to the end of our table and a gentleman came by and was pretty direct and said "you can't put that there". Instead of approaching it in a helpful manner, it was pretty rude. Not the best way to start your dining experience. The experience did take a positive turn when our new server greeted us, he was super positive and attentive and knowledgeable. We did not go with the prefix menu we ordered family style off the regular menu and I'm so glad we did. We got to try so many wonderful foods with magnificent flavors. My favorites were the dumplings, ribs, crab dip, naan and the flaky bread that came out with the naan bread. Everything has such great flavor and I would love to come again and try more off of the menu. This visit was a really mixed bag. I liked the butter chicken, but it was a very tomato forward butter chicken and a medium spice level. Based on the texture, I thought the chicken might have been cooked on the bone and then deboned before plating which I really like. I liked the Bombay Pav Bhaj, and the bread it came with was amazing with a bit more density to it than your usual pav. The masala jackfruit tacos were good and quite spicy. The saffron rice might be my favorite. It is as saffron as saffron gets. Very aromatic with a distinct flavor. I've never had saffron rice this concentrated. It was delicious. The wheat roti was also good with a nice texture but quite greasy. I think they melted ghee or butter on eat piece. I usually, they brought missi roti even though we ordered wheat roti, but they fixed the mistake quickly and gave us the missi roti at no cost to us. The missi roti isn't something I would ever order. It was like a soft cracker rather than a bread. The lamb Korma was okay. It was a bit gamey for my taste, but Ameya and his parents liked it the best, probably because it wasn't spicy. They also liked the tamarind prawns. I did not like my cocktail. I love a good clarified milk punch, and the Tulsi Twilight is supposed to be yogurt washed. I couldn't tell it was washed with anything. All I could taste was acidity, and it gave me heartburn. Also couldn't taste any basil. They are known for their dahi Puri, but I don't understand the hype. Reviews online describe it as a burst of flavors and describe the yogurt as tangy. The yogurt I had was only sweet, and the seasoned potato and green apple at the bottom tasted like a Mexican green salsa. The presentation was sad. I was a bit disappointed by the desserts. The texture of Milk was just rasmalai topped with a crispy milk on top that reminds me of how milk dries around the top of your milk jug after some time in the fridge. The Khubani Ka Meetha was nice, but the menu said it had a cardamom mousse. I absolutely love cardamom, but I couldn't taste it in the dessert. Unfortunately my experience here did not match the quality of food I tasted for dinner at the Rooh in Palo Alto several years ago. We ordered: - Dahi puri: unfortunately they came pre filled, so you couldn't do the fun poke-and-fill that makes this snack fun. The filling also seemed to be just pure yogurt. No potato, no mint chutney, no tamarind chutney. Bland, I'd skip - Bombay pan bahji: an artisinal take, with butter brushed soft rolls and a pile of lemony and buttery mashed filling (with a slight kick!). Delicious but requires assembly - Vegetable kofta: the dumplings themselves (falafel-like) were pretty bland, but the gravy/sauce was a heady mix of saffron and cardamom that addicted your tastebuds with its sweet and savory combo. This place is so good! This was our second visit, but the first time we had food. Last time, we just had drinks and the food looked so good that we knew we would be back to try it. Our server was very friendly. He made great suggestions to help us with the selection process. We ordered the Dahi puri for an appetizer and it was delicious. I recently went to Rooh to celebrate a friend's birthday and it could not have been more perfect. From the start to finish, the entire experience was phenomenal. For starters, we had the Lamb Chops and the Chicken Meatballs in Truffle sauce, absolutely heaven. Perfectly cooked, rich and so full of flavour that they set the tone for the evening. For the mains, we ordered the Butter Chicken, Paneer Pinwheel and the Lamb Shank Nihari. While everything was delicious, the Nihari was hands down my favourite. Visited Rooh a long time ago with a friend for Happy Hour, and had some great experiences with the cocktails. We made the reservation a few days before our visit, and we sat right away. All drinks were put on a wheel and separated with different tastes, including sweet, sour, bitter etc. Ramu's Fizz $17 Husband got the sour selection which was made with Vodka, Citrus Gin, and Grapefruit Juice, Cranberry, Passionfruit Water. On top it was Mascarpone Cheese and Egg White. Mango Tango $12 I got the non-alcoholic drink that was made with Mango, Yogurt, Green Cardamom, and decorated with Toasted Pistachios on top. Very creamy and smooth, and was great as a non-alcoholic drink. Box Office $17 Our friend got the bitter section, this cocktail was made with Popcorn Bourbon, Popcorn Syrup, Angostura Bitters, and Amul Butter Wash. Kumoan Swizzle $17 Last one is the sweet option, made with Vodka, Dom Benedicitins , Lime, Orange Juice, and Fig Jam. Dahi Puri $16 For appetizer, we got the Dahi Puri whith was made with semolina puff with yogurt mousse, containing flavors of avocado, tamarind, raspberry and mint. ROOH gets one star for the ambience and one star for the service. The restaurant itself is absolutely beautiful, very high class, and thoughtfully designed. The service was also solid and attentive. Unfortunately, that is where the positives end. The biggest disappointment by far was the food, which should obviously be the star here, and it completely missed the mark. We ordered the butter chicken, and it did not taste like butter chicken at all. It genuinely tasted like tomato soup with chicken in it. It was technically edible, but the flavor was completely wrong and honestly pretty nasty. We asked for a dessert recommendation and were told to try the Texture of Milk, which was a huge mistake. That dessert was really bad and genuinely disgusting. I would strongly advise anyone to skip it. The only dish we actually liked was the dahi puri, which is similar to pani puri but topped with yogurt instead of a juice filling. That dish was flavorful and enjoyable, but one decent appetizer does not save an entire meal. What makes this even worse is that the food is extremely overpriced for the quality. For how much they charge, the food should be exceptional, and instead it was some of the most disappointing Indian food we have had. At these prices, there is absolutely no excuse. They really need to replace their chef because the execution is just not there. Overall, I would never go back and would never recommend this place to friends. A beautiful space and decent service cannot make up for food that is this bad, especially at such a high price point. read more

The black daal was honestly my favorite. Rich, perfectly spiced, and super satisfying. Paired with the garlic naan? Obsessed. I didn't enjoy the khubani ka meetha as much because it had too much cardamom, and the order of cauliflower pakoras was very ordinary even though it tasted fresh. the rest of them were amazing. Absolutely loved this spot- as fans of Indian cuisine, I loved their unique taste on the classic Indian flavors and dishes. We were sat promptly and our waiter was very friendly and accommodating. We got the chai old fashion and the ramu's fizz- both beautiful with great, light flavor. For our food- we started with the aloo tikki and the dahi puri- both some of the best bites of the night. The presentation and flavors of both were absolutely insanely tasty. The crispy potatos with the aloo tikki will stay in my dreams for the end of time. We also got the chicken tikka kulcha and the chili cauliflower- both flavorful and light. For our main we shared rice, garlic naan (get two orders), and the butter chicken- it wasn't too sweet or overly spicy but was a great round out for our meal and the chicken was good quality. Reminds me of the Thai sweet chili sauce in a bottle. I loved the crispiness of the lotus stem chips but found the glaze a bit too much. The Maddur Vada was a huge disappointment of the night. It was doughy and under seasoned. The black truffle items barely had any truffle aroma to them. The Mali meatballs were a bit salty. I've been here twice and I now have an idea what items I'd order again and which I'd pass. Service is still great. Items came out fast. However when I inquired about a particular ingredient in a dish the server had no knowledge of it and had to go into the kitchen to ask. This was not until after telling us the wrong thing first. It was a type of red pepper but he told us it was a pomegranate. If you like unique flavor combinations, Rooh will certainly please your palate. Last night we enjoyed the Dahi Puri, Butter Chicken Kulcha, Potato Tiki and Crispy Okra. To accompany the food we opted for the Mumbai Chai; I recommend at least one person at the table order this for its spectacular presentation. I love chai anything, so this is also my fave drink. Take note-- on a Monday night there was a wait at the door. Being two of us only, we were able to walk and seat ourselves at the bar; you want to ask the host first before doing that. Friend came to visit the bay and said this was her favorite restaurant when she used to live here so we had to come back! It was my first time at Rooh and I see what she means. We ordered the dahi puri, chicken malai meatballs, paneer pinwheel, and kerala beef. I think we ordered more but I can't remember since I was just savoring every bite. At first, I wanted to give this place 4 stars because I did enjoy my meal but Indian food is my favorite food so, for sake of relativity, I adjusted to 3 stars. The food definitely came out concerningly fast and I think that already established some uneasiness for the meal. However, the mango lassi was very good and I liked the pistachios sprinkled on top. Starting with the butter chicken, this butter chicken had a pretty tomato forward sauce and I was looking for something creamier. It was delicious, as it's butter chicken, but it's far from the best I've had. Chicken was moist but not as tender as I'm used to, sauce could've been much creamier. The paneer pinwheel didn't blow me away either. The sauce on this one was better and actually tasted creamier (I preferred this sauce with the rice and naan) but the paneer was pretty standard and other than the chutney, I wasn't getting strong flavors from the other two in the trio (saffron and I forgot the other flavor). A bit disappointed but still had a great night. The ambiance is beautiful, great location in the lively SoMa, good and attentive service, and I would like to give it another try one day! When we complained to manager they mention main chef will call us in the morning to discuss. I believe chefs name was Akash he apologized and said their chef had left and they were left stranded. Horrible way to handle situation. I asked for refund 1/2 amount. They denied. So I disputed with my bank. Butter chicken the worst dish I have ever tried. Chicken was so hard. As a group of 6, we ordered family-style which was plenty for us to share. My group raved about the tender and flavorful lamb nihari as it practically fell off the bone. The chicken butter masala had a surprisingly delightful flavor profile as it had more hints of ginger and masala - this stood out as I've never had a butter masala base that was this good. What a beautiful experience this meal was! I had heard so much about Rooh before coming here, I was a bit afraid that it would all be just over hype. (Which did happen with Pippal in my case. Huge disappointment) But man, food and ambiance here was one of the best in the Indian restaurant scene of the bay area. Every dish was flavorful, with beautiful combinations of textures and tastes. We also loved the drinks we tried here. I will definitely come back here to try more items on the menu. (The only sad moment was, our friend's car was broken into when street-parked outside the restaurant... But that's SF for you) read more
