Chicken Makhmali $20.95
Cathrin P C.

Small little restaurant located on a quiet end of Taraval across from Safeway, I was eager to try Sherpa House after reading all the positive reviews. This fairly new restaurant is super cute, cozy and had that authentic vibe upon entry. We were greeted warmly, then scored the awesome super sized table near the window because of our party of 6. Overall, the place felt homey and I appreciated that we were able to have a lively conversation without having music or typical restaurant noise to compete with. Our order: The Momo platter $17 Explosive chicken $14.95 Sherpa mix grill $23.70 Kukhura lamb tulsi $20.95 Chicken makhmali $20.95 Shrimp biryani $20.95 Dudh chiya $3.95 Mango lassi $4.95 18% gratuity was automatically added, which brought our total bill to $165.22 Portion wise, I have to say each dish was small and between the 6 of us, we were really only able to get a few bites of each dish. I also found that most of the flavors were not very strong, as I'm typically used to. I do have to admit that our party had request mild in the heat level but even the garlic naan was pretty bland and it didn't taste or smell like garlic, even though we could visibly see lots of garlic flakes on the naan. My dudh chiya was also lacking in tea essence, ginger, cloves and cardamom -- basically tasted like steamed milk... I wish I was more impressed as I did appreciate the warm service and overall ambiance.

Sherpa House feels like a retreat to the Himalayas. The warmly decorated interior transports you to another world, and the menu takes you on a flavor journey. We were started with small bowls of yellow lentil soup, and we continued with the Momo Platter, which came with three pieces each of veg, chicken, and pork steamed dumplings, served with a tomato sesame achar sauce for dipping. The Sherpa Mix Grill was a sizzling iron plate with pieces of marinated chicken, salmon, and lamb, marinated and cooked in a tandoor oven. This wasn't the best dish, as the meats were on the dry side, and the portion was disappointingly small. From the selection of curries, the Chicken Makhmali (butter chicken) was a creamy tomato-based curry with pieces of tender chicken; the Lamb Tulsi was made of pieces of lamb in an onion curry flavored with basil; but my favorite was the Saag Paneer, a spinach curry with cubes of homemade cheese. Unlike other versions I've had, the spinach in this dish was chopped rather than pureed, such that it retained a nice texture. Each of the entrees came with a choice of side, and the Plain Naan was a simple delight--the freshly-baked flatbread was doughy, chewy, and went perfectly with all of the different curries! Overall, the flavors of the curries here were on point, though the other dishes were average and came in small portion sizes given their menu prices.

Got dinner here for the first time last week after the Stern Grove festival - what a treat! We ordered the momos platter, explosive chicken, sizzling lamb plate, and Kukhra Bhanta (eggplant and chicken). The service was fast and friendly! The space is very large, well decorated, and good for groups. The lamb was a bit dry but we loved the explosive chicken and eggplant chicken the most.

We ordered a Bhanta dip, chicken makhmali, biryani with chicken, and chicken tandoori. We noticed after we ordered that we ordered so much chicken dishes haha Nonetheless, it was all very yummy. I loved eating the chicken makhmali with the biryani. The sauce is so creamy/buttery. The tandoori chicken is always my favorite thing to get, love the Smokey flavor on it and the spices. Honestly, wasn't a huge fan of the bhanta dip - didn't really taste eggplant.

Welcome to the neighborhood Himalayan/Nepalese food cuisine! You have no idea how long I waited for a restaurant like this to pop up on this side of town as I have been traveling to different parts of the city just to eat Nepalese food. It's still had same setup from the Korean restaurant that was here so many years ago that gave the homely neighborhood relaxing vibe, not sure if they will make any changes down the road they did put up some nice decorations of the colorful ribbons of the region. We ordered the Momo Platter $16.00 3 pieces each. Veg, chicken, and pork The veggie was just ok and I would stick with the meat options as it more flavor. Sherpa Mixed Grill-$22.95 Combination of chicken, lamb, and salmon The salmon was my favorite as it was soft and tender and the lamb was good as well. Chicken was just ok. The Must orders that stood out: Kukhura Bhanta - Chicken & Eggplant $17.95 was a Slow-cooked chicken and eggplant in homemade sauce. Served with choice of basmati, brown, or plain rice I could just inhale this dish all by myself if I wanted but I had to be nice and share it. Excellent texture and taste of flavors and food pairing was perfect. This was just a perfect dish A+. Garlic naan and butter naan both excellent Chowmein $14.95 was the Traditional Nepali wok-fried noodles with chicken, fresh seasonal veggies and Sherpa's spices. I was very impressed with this dish as it texture was different from what I was accustomed to and flavor as well. The chowmein was unique in taste and texture very different from typical Chinese restaurants. I really liked this with unique spices, surprisingly. There's so many other items to try and the restaurant was pretty busy for a Saturday night and a line was forming later as the night progressed and there was people just ordering take out standing by the kitchen. I feel this restaurant represents its culture well and I am glad these dishes are gaining popularity. I would like to come back to try other dishes for sure!

Naan with a dip we used on everything else too

Well this was a lovely surprise! Heading to SFO early and decided to stop and eat along the way, so chose a place close to 19th Av that had a great Yelp rating. We had a great omen predicting the dinner - a parking spot directly in front of the restaurant on Taraval. We were not misled! First, the owner/Matre'd was VERY friendly, and a wealth of information (not just about the food either). We asked for some suggestions for our party and were not disappointed with what arrived! Everything from the appetizers to the entrees to the side dishes was dazzling. The mix of South Asian flavors from the chef (who actually WAS a Sherpa in the 90s) was delicious, flavorful, fresh, and abundant. Honestly, I can't wait to get back and try more dishes, the Tibet/India/Burma mix is just incredible.

Yellow lentil soup to start our lovely meal, milk tea, what a beautiful beginning!

What a beautiful place! Great food, relaxing atmosphere, large menu. You can choose your level of spiciest HOT fire to mild. Nepalese / Himalayan / Indian food: excellent curries, several kinds of sauces, milk tea, many other choices. Complimentary soup to start this great meal. Food is beautiful presented by an elegant knowledgeable server. Quiet relaxing ambiance. Well prepared dishes, large portions, slow cooked tender chicken and lamb. There is fish / shrimp curry and veggie dishes too, We will have to try some of the other main dishes / sauces and beverages, next time. We really enjoyed our meals and this pretty restaurant. Location on Taraval St. has very limited parking, it's across the street from Safeway. Try Easy parking on side streets. The LRV street car goes by in front, an easy travel option.

***UPDATE*** It's our 3rd time here and still, it seems like a spot unseen! Maybe their location is too far from other restaurants to be noticed? They have Himalayan decor showcasing their beautiful culture making it a cozy spot to enjoy a meal. We absolutely love all the dishes we've had here so far! Everything is flavorful, delicious, and plentiful! Well worth the amount paid. For 3 people, it was only $53 and we had leftovers! That's why it surprises me that it's always quiet when we come. And service is attentive and food comes out in a reasonable manner. They even give a sampler of lentil soup at the beginning of your meal and rice pudding at the end. I hope others will be curious enough to check out Sherpa House! So if you haven't tried them, you're missing out on GREAT food!!!

Delicious! Stopped by here this week for the first time and it won't be the last time. It was super busy on a Friday night and the service was a little bit slow, but we weren't in a rush and enjoyed sitting back and relaxing. They also started our meal off with a complimentary lentil soup. They were super accommodating and changed the momo platter for us to pork, veg, paneer - they were all so good. We also got the chili paneer and the egg fried rice (medium spice) and damn it was spicy but realllllly good once we got used to the spice.

Nice little Nepalese cuisine house warm deco clean tables and excellent staff serving garlic naan, tikki fries and creamy chicken makhmali. Momo platter dumpling plates are fillings and tasty too.

Vegetarian chow main and samosa
Nilu S.

Food, yummy the samosa was fresh from the fryer and the Indo-chow-main hit the spot perfectly spicy and tasty. Got it to go after my massage next door but will dine in next time as the inside is so cute

Amazing food and amazing service! The staff is super friendly. I came here with a party of 7 to celebrate a few birthdays, and it was such a good experience! The staff played the happy birthday song over the tv/speakers and gave traditional Tibetan(?) scarves to the birthday people. Overall, everyone was happy and we will definitely come back again.

One of my friends went overboard and wanted to order 6 plates of momos. We had to wait a while before the food started to arrive, which was not unexpected considering the size of our group and the amount of food that we ordered. I especially liked the chicken biryani and chicken chow mein. Some of the other dishes like the egg fried rice weren't quite to my liking, but that's why it was nice to have a good variety of dishes. Overall, I felt the food was priced affordably. The experience dining in was net positive and would recommend.

My recommendations: Spicy cauliflower: 5/5. These have a beautiful crispy covered in a vibrant spicy sauce. Delicious, not too spicy. Pork belly: 4/5. Crispy and flavorful. Samosa: 3.5/5. Good but had better. Fried chicken: 4/5. Huge portions of well seasoned crispy chicken. Always juicy and piping hot. The sauce pairs well. Chicken momo: 3.5/5. Very tasty. Once again, a winning sauce. I got the butter chicken as well but wasn't my favorite. I wanted more butter and more cream/yogurt. It's a very tomato-forward dish just fyi if you don't like that. Overall, super cute nice vibe in this restaurant!
