Sunset Indian Cuisine is situated in the heart of dozens of restaurants. So many options, but I recommend this one. We went in for an early dinner, at about 4. We were instructed to sit anywhere, so we took a table by the window. We ordered vegetable pakora, and they brought it along with papadum! Complimentary papadum is an East Coast norm, but never out here. There was a third hot chutney, along with the standard tamarind and mint. The tamarind was definitely superior to most others, not as vinegary. The pakora tasted far better than they looked. The Wife ordered vegetable korma very mild, while I had vegetable biryani, medium. The biryani came with a generous amount of raita, which was thick like good tzatziki. I wish the biryani had cashews, but otherwise was very tasty. The korma used obviously fresh veggies, not frozen. I also got a glass of Chardonnay, a generous pour for only $7! We ended with pistachio kulfi and gulab jamun, and some masala tea. The kulfi was fabulous. They tried to give us our check early, when we still wanted dessert. When they came back with the check, it was missing the desserts, so I pointed that out. With everything, the total was $78.72. I still don't understand why City Indian restaurants are so much cheaper than out here in the East Bay. Most veggie entrees were $13-$15. Some cleaning would be helpful. The spherical light fixtures were pretty dusty on top, and the one above The Wife was falling apart a bit.

I ordered dinner from this place through DoorDash because of the high ratings on both Yelp and DoorDash. I was super disappointed when i got my order. I feel like it's hard to mess up dal tadka, which is lentils in cream or butter. I couldn't eat it because i felt like i was crunching on spices. It wasn't just peppercorn or large pieces that you can remove. It was small pieces that were mixed in that were hard, and physically hurt to chew. I had to throw out my whole order. There were also pinto beans mixed in, which tasted rotten.

If you ever find yourself wandering down Irving Street with a craving that only rich spices and fluffy naan can cure, The Sunset Indian Restaurant is your answer. Their paneer tikka masala is a star - creamy, tangy, and perfectly paired with warm naan that seems designed for scooping up every last drop. The curries here range from gentle, cozy mild (like a warm hug on a foggy Sunset evening) to spicy enough to make you question your life choices--but in the most delicious way. Order a steaming cup of chai to cool your senses (yes, somehow it works!) and let the flavors carry you away. It's one of those spots where every dish feels like comfort food, whether you're a heat-seeker or spice-shy. Cozy, flavorful, and full of character--this place is proof that the Sunset knows how to do Indian food right.

TLDR - I was absolutely floored by this place. Will be back again for sure Right on Irving street, I had seen this place multiple times over the last two months walking in my neighborhood but never really thought to check it out. This weekend, I had some friends in town and I was showing them around. We happened to walk by Sunset Indian cuisine and it smelled incredible. After checking out some stores around the corner we decided to go back and it see what it was about. The restaurant itself is fairly quaint - lots of tables to seat groups of 2-4. We sat right by the front , and promptly had our order taken. For our meal we shared an order of veggie pakoras, chicken momos, an order of garlic naan, daal makhani, and lamb vindaloo. Prior to our order being dropped off, we were given some pappadums and chutney. All three chutneys provided were awesome. I particularly liked the red chutney. Everything came out promptly and fresh. Pakoras were crispy on the outside and fluffy/ light on the inside. The momos were a highlight for me and were served with a cumin lentil sauce. The lamb in the vindaloo sauce was very tender. To top off the excellent food, the price for this meal was super reasonable. Having Indian/ Nepalese this good so close by is definitely a treat. I will be back again or ordering take out from here very soon.

I'm a sucker for an Indian restaurant with crispy white linen tablecloth, red napkins and a red rose in a vase - a sign for authenticity for me. Accompanied by Indian music, we ordered papadum, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer and garlic naan. Service was friendly and efficient. Large portions, reasonably priced, we boxed enough to have it for lunch the next day - still yummy!

Date: Monday, March 24th, 2025 Party of: 2 Meal: Dinner Delivery Time Ordered: around 8:30pm Time Delivered: about 30 mins later How Ordered: DoorDash Delivered to: Outer Richmond *Somosa ($5.99) *Chicken Tikka Masala ($15.50) - Spicy *Garlic Naan ($3.95) *Chili Naan ($3.95) *Chicken Vindaloo ($15.50) - Spicy *Onion Naan ($3.99) *Spinach Naan ($4.95) I was craving Indian food and wanted to try a new spot. The hubby was down, so we ordered from Sunset. They were close to us and had pretty good reviews on Yelp. The samosas were tasty. A good size. The shell was crispy which the filling was soft and flavorful. I enjoyed the tikka masala. It was creamy and comforting with the naan. The vindaloo I found overly acidic, probably due to all the tomato. We actually ended up mixing the two and it turned out fine. The naan were all soft with a good chew. Both curries could have used more heat for me. I didn't find either very spicy at all. For more moderate spiced curries, this could fit the bill. I'll probably stick with my usual spot since they really amp up the spice level. REVIEW #3745

    Himalayan Chicken Momo

Been here 3 times this week. Despite being a late night restaurant, this place is on top of their service and the food comes promptly. Samosa chaat 8/10 A bit too sweet for me. Wish it were a little bit spicier Palak Paneer 10/10 Super delicious, exactly what I wanted. The cheese is cut in nice large chunks. Chicken Bryani 9/10 Chicken wasn't dry at all, rather perfectly cooked. Good flavor in the rice. Vegetable Bryani 9/19 I wasnt expecting the amount of vegetables that were packed in here. Eggplant, onions, carrots, and potatoes (which I thought was a bit odd) Himalayan Chicken Momo 10/10 Super flavorful and delicious. Came with 6, all for less than 15 dollars. The dumplings were perfect, didn't even need the delicious sauce that complimented them. While the ambiance isn't the most romantic, the orange walls and himalayan portraits make it somewhat comforting. Sometimes they play pleasant music but often it's silent. One unique aspect of this place is their robust alcohol selection, including a wide selection of large beers for around 5 dollars. I certainly see myself coming here for a beer or two given that they are cheaper than getting a dive bar pint!

Soya Chaap. Amazing taste. I have never taste like this in my entire life. Their service is awesome. Good environment.

Amazing food. Wonderful service. Me and my friend try first time here, its very great experince. If you guys looking for indian food near golden gate area sunset is the best.

tldr neighborhood joint serving up indian and nepali classics with spacious seating and friendly service friends and i ordered pakora, goat curry, butter chicken, saag paneer, okra, garlic + potato naan, and side of rice, mango lassi overall food is great value for what u get! pakora 4.5/5 - very crispy and tasty with a soft interior and dipping chutneys went well with it goat curry 3/5 - it was really gamey which i didn't like but the flavor of the sauce was good and meat was tender butter chicken 5/5 - really like the depth of flavor for this! it was my favorite of the night and one of the better ones i have had in the city saag paneer 3.5/5 - it was just okay i have definitely had better at other restaurants but wasn't too bad naans + rice 5/5 very fresh and tasty, each order comes with two big naans so order less if u have a small group and rice was cooked well with some fennel mango lassi 4/5 tasted like the usual but i did wish it was colder overall service was great and we could tell that food was made fresh! we will come back to try more nepali food next time :) food 4/5 service 4/5 ambiance 3/5 value 4/5

    Lamb Shank
    Victoria T.

I've been to Sunset Indian Cuisine after their renovations and I say it's pretty decent! I've tried their Lamb shank, butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, lentil soup, and garlic naan. I would say I was let down by the butter chicken as they only included 4-5 small cubes of chicken breast in it. I was really shocked when I got it because I am paying almost $17 for a portion of butter chicken but only a small amount of chicken? Lentil soup was also decent, it didn't wow me but it wasn't bad. Their highlight for me was their lamb shank. It was super tender, flavorful, and didn't taste gamey. I would go here if I was craving lamb but I would skip the others. Also restaurant felt a little dirty as it smelled like mildew and they just change out their table tops w/ a paper.

Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Coconut Curry
    Anh T.

My friend and I came here on a weekday night and were seated immediately. There were several other tables filled in the restaurant decorated in a red-orange setting with nature paintings on the wall. We ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Coconut Curry, along with a side of Basmati Rice. Both the Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Coconut Curry had strong, delicious seasoning, and the coconut curry had a nice, creamy texture. The proportion of meat to curry was appropriate, and we were both full with leftovers to take home for one more meal for one. Many of the Indian restaurants in this area have a diverse menu with quality dishes, and this manages to be one of them! I would love to come back and try some other specialty dishes in the future.

    Chicken Biryani

I'm a huge biryani fan when it comes to Indian food and I have tried biryanis from many places all over the Bay Area. Sunset Indian Cuisine biryanis in my book would be a 7 out 10. The rice or biryanis were rather too wet or too oily. Of the two biryanis, chicken was ordered with mild spicy and lamb with spicier than mild. Both tasted like not even a little spicy at all. Portion size was and ratio of meat to rice were good but taste wasn't exactly outstanding. Would I go back there? I don't believe I would for biryanis but perhaps for other curried and naan.

Amazing food and great experience The food was delicious and full of authentic flavors. Everything was fresh, well-cooked, and beautifully presented. The momos and curries were especially tasty, and the rice was perfectly cooked. The atmosphere was warm, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I would definitely come back and highly recommend this restaurant!

I realized I had not added seating accommodation to my reservation and tried to call, but no one answered. When we arrived, the hostess told us we would not be able to sit in any of the currently empty booths because reservations were coming in later. We were seated at a table off the dining space near the kitchen, my mom was a little too chilly and the booth didn't have enough neck support. I expressed to the host that though I was sorry I had forgotten to add accommodation, that this was just not the way to handle the problem. I was able to speak to the manager, who had been outside taking orders and was clearly working very hard that day. (Her name is quite uncommon so I'm just going to call her M, but I really appreciate your help!) She asked me what my concern was, and I told her, at which point she asked me to wait nearby while she figured out if she could rearrange some tables for us. The bartender was incredibly kind and served me while I waited, and distracted me from imminent tears by sharing intricate details about each drink he was making. I learned do they have a myriad of health oriented cocktails, with ingredients like turmeric, ginger, and aloe liqueur. The manager returned and said that she had already seated my mother in a new space and escorted me to the table, which allowed me to relax and enjoy the meal. At the beginning of the menu, they list the ingredients that are currently in season, and at the back of the menu, there is a color wheel, telling you the benefits of the colors of food. (Purple foods can assist with memory and brain function!). We ordered the asparagus, which was in season, spicy cucumber, and the Aji grill for two. The tofu that came with the grill for two was my favorite thing that we ate. I think you can judge a vegan / vegetarian restaurant by their treatment of tofu. Perfectly seasoned with a crispy outside and I would come back just for this. The cauliflower steak was also pretty tasty. The cocktails are excellent, we tried the BLACKPINK and my mother tried the espressotini and we were really happy with both. I don't know how popular their bar scene is, but I imagine it would be a nice way to meet other vegan and vegetarian folks over light bites. Our waiter Daniel made sure to give us the Mother's Day special dessert the restaurant had created, which was an avocado Grenache with fresh berries. If the experience had started with less stress, this review would be five stars, but I'm very grateful to the staff for doing what they could to correct it and ensure that we had a great Mother's Day! I would love to visit again and update my review :)

The roll had spicy tofu, cucumber, avocado, seaweed pearls, shichimi, and it tasted just like California roll no joke! I was shocked! The roll has tempura spicy tofu, green onion, sesame, spicy aioli, sweet soy. It's crunchy and the sauce was super flavorful, even better than some regular sushi I've ever had. Yes, in addition to IKEA's viral food court, there's so much more. Saluhall opened with all-vegan vendors but things have shifted back to meat and dairy. Case Borinquena is the last standing all-vegan stall. This is Caribbean soul food and it's so good. If you're looking for a salad or something light, this is not for you. This food will fill you up and leave you wanting more. Loaded Tostones is pumped up with nacho-ish toppings. Served with a thick and tasty mama sauce. I was dunking everything into that sauce. I opted for the side of tostones because I was craving the crunchy plantain. It was crisp perfection! Lulu's Famous Pastelillo filled with vegan beef or chicken was another winner for me. The dough was fried perfectly and I loved the chicken filling flavor. Chef's kiss. Coquito cake is on the menu! If you love eggnog, get this right now. I want to return for the sampler plate. At $20, it's cheaper than a flight to Puerto Rico. Pro-tip: first hour of parking is free!

We ordered a variety of dishes and were definitely full by the end of the meal. They don't really specialize in a specific cuisine, so it's an assortment of different types of food. Would recommend the fried cauliflower (my favorite of the night), the falafel platter, fresh conchiglie pasta (second favorite), grilled polenta, and the cauliflower fattoush. Solid dishes. Would definitely pass on the butternut squash pizza and hodo tofu brochettes. The bread basket was fine, the butter was a bit interesting with corn, miso, and honey flavors. Overall, the food was flavorful and some dishes were just better than others. Service was solid the entire night - the workers are very friendly. Inside is quite nice with wood furnishings and a good view looking out.

I ended up ordering a mushroom rueben with pastrami spiced roasted maitake, sauerkraut, and gruyere. Loved everything about this sandwich from the crusty bread to the gooey cheese and super flavorful maitake which felt like a substantial protein substitute. It's served with a side of housemade chips. The rueben was large enough that I was full eating just half and got the rest to go. After finishing my meal, I also got an oat cappuccino for an afternoon pick me up and was happy to have a boost of caffeine. The espresso was surprisingly good for a restaurant coffee bar. Would definitely recommend for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. I'll have to come back to try their dinner menu which seems more creative and unique!

We understand Chinatown restaurants may not always provide "fine dining" service, and honestly we were not expecting that. But the attitude from the short-haired lady server was extremely unpleasant. While we were still ordering, she already looked impatient and annoyed. We had two elderly people with us, so yes, we needed a little more time to order, but the restaurant was not even busy. What made the experience worse was that the staff were loudly chatting back and forth in Cantonese the entire time using rude language and gossiping nonstop. Customers come to enjoy a meal peacefully, not sit there listening to staff complain and bitch about things across the restaurant. The atmosphere felt uncomfortable, unprofessional, and stressful the entire meal. After this visit, we definitely will not return to the Chinatown location again.
