The meal was overall really good but I do have a huge complaint about the Pineapple Fried Rice. For $18 plus tax and tip, the dish was really disappointing. Instead of wok-fried rice, pineapple, and vegetables, you get steamed rice with frozen peas and carrots (warmed) and the pineapple chunks come straight from a can that are uncooked. Our first experience at Burma 2 was amazing. Their food was delicious! I was very surprised with how quick they gave us our order. I really enjoyed their Walnut Shrimp however, they do keep the tails on which didn't bother me at all (but may bother some). The fried rice was interesting but good as well, and I also liked their string beans. It had a slight garlic taste on it and they were crunchy. I was hoping the lemongrass chicken was crispy but nevertheless was also very flavorful. One thing that I would have enjoyed is sitting less closely to people. Had a good Sunday lunch here a few weeks ago! Service was really quick. We started off with the samosas and tea leaf salad (the salad's unique, haven't had it elsewhere and it's a treat). For entrees, we got the Burma noodles, eggplant & garlic and mango chicken, plus jasmine rice. My mom thought there'd be more spice to it, but it was on the milder side. Not sure if you can order by spice level here, but it was still a delicious meal, and made for good leftovers the next day. I was excited to try this place with my family, but we were a little disappointed. First of all, the service and ambiance of this place is 10/10. The inside is a bit fancier than I was expecting.....I was hoping for a chiller eating experience, but it was still nice. Pricing was a bit much for the portions though. I've never had Burmese food, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But the simplicity of all the flavors we tasted was quite disappointing. I totally believe Burmese food is much more flavorful and complex than what we had (because I've eaten a lot of other southeastern Asian foods close to these dishes). The dishes we got mostly tasted like food from a mediocre Thai restaurant (I'm really sorry to say!)...the Burmese fried chicken was practically just fried chicken (which was good and crispy), covered in what tasted exactly like the store-bought Thai chili sauce. The mangos on top paired nicely, but overall it didn't feel like a very authentic dish. The moh hin gha was a dish I was excited to try, but again it lacked a lot of flavor and the noodles were soggy. We also got the garlic noodles, which lacked any garlic flavor and was not even salty. The beef was good but nothing special imo. Overall, we got some bland dishes that day unfortunately. What I WILL praise though, is that coconut rice. 100/10. Overall, this is a nice restaurant with decent southeast Asian food. It would be fun for people who have never or rarely eat food with flavors like this. I came here just before closing to meet a friend who flew into town from Dallas. She's also a food reviewer, and this was her recommendation--and it definitely didn't disappoint. I loved that they still served us and let us sit and chat for about an hour after they closed. We tried the garlic noodles, salt and pepper shrimp, and a mint meat dish (I can't quite remember the name). We paired everything with Thai tea, and it was all amazing! I would highly recommend this spot. We sat on the patio since the weather in Walnut Creek was perfect that day. I am so glad that there is a Burmese restaurant out this way now and of good caliber food! Note there is parking right before you hit the restaurant and if you passed it like I did, just turn left at the end of its short block and on the left side another city parking area. Gayle and I enjoyed a very nice meal with our theater friends a few hours after enjoying Mary Zimmerman's Matchbox Silver Flute at Berkeley Rep. We parked at the Library and took an easy walk over to a rather bustling and reservations-friendly establishment. Traffic seemed to bunch up at the door, but one our reservation was confirmed, restaurant staff were very attentive in getting us to our table and getting the drink order down relatively quickly. It was smooth sailing service-wise from there. We dined "family style" as we ordered an appetizer (Palata with Chicken Curry) and 3 entrees (Burmese Pad Thai with Chicken, Burmese Fried Chicken, and Burma String Beans and spread the dishes around our table. Everything was excellent, especially the String Beans. 2 of us ordered beer to go along with all this, while Gayle was happy with her signature Bombay Sapphire Martini. The spice factor was mild, but with welcome glasses of water at the ready. This is a casual dining establishment, including a fairly large single indoor dining room, and an outdoor patio. It was a busy place when were were there, with a number of group tables contrasting against couples and tables of 4. Gayle even recognized a few people, even though they apparently didn't recognize here. In the end, it was a bit easier to slip the door to the patio, instead of navigating the front door area. We split the bill 2 ways, of which we all agreed that the total cost was rather reasonable. I would say though that the dishes are big and this kind of restaurant is better if you eat family style. All the dishes are perfect to share! Last time we were here, we ordered several dishes: - Eggplant and Garlic 5/5: I love eggplant, and they make one of the best eggplants I've had! I can eat this with rice alone. Every bite is perfection. If you like eggplant this is a must! They also have eggplant and tofu but just the eggplant itself is delicious! - Lemon Grass Chicken 4/5: This is also a favorite of our family. The chicken has good flavor, and the lemongrass is not too overpowering. - Pumpkin Curry 2/5: this is a no for me. The pumpkin wasn't cooked all the way and the chicken was overcooked. I wouldn't get this again. - Tea Leaf Salad 5/5: This dish is very refreshing, has lots of flavor, and is overall a delicious dish. It's a must-try, too. - Salt and Pepper Calamari 5/5: I was surprised at how good the calamari was. It was perfectly coated and cooked, not oily, and very flavorful. This is definitely another great dish. - Palata 5/5: I love Palata, and the one here is perfect. I like to order it with the coconut chicken curry. The dish is pretty small though but the coconut curry's flavor is exquisite. - Pad Thai 3/5: this was a "not again" dish for me as well. PARKING, SERVICE, VIBES We arrived when they opened at 5 and were the first ones there. They were super accommodating with my service dog and extremely eager to answer questions and get food out to us fast. All of the waitstaff was very very friendly, kind, and pleasant. They were extremely attentive as well-- refilling our water glasses, checking to make sure the food was good, etc. At one point I had a question so I began looking around to see if a server was nearby, and one immediately saw me looking and came to our table. The service was very welcoming. There are a lot of seats both indoors and outdoors. Inside there are benches lining the walls and backed chairs on non walls. Parking was difficult but not impossible. It's paid, 3hr maximum, all parallel parking. I paid $3 for 1.5 hours. The meters do not take touchless pay. FOOD We got the Burmese pad Thai, coconut rice, tea leaf salad, and mango chicken. The tea leaf salad was good-- very peanutty. The coconut rice was coconutty-- a little soft (a little overdone) but still good. The pad Thai and mango chicken were both good but VERY sweet. There was sugar in everything except the salad. Lots of mango in the mango chicken, ample tofu and shrimp in the pad Thai, but just a lot of sugar. I want to note that gluten free items are marked on the menu. If you read my reviews you know I am celiac (cannot have gluten). Promptly after finishing the meal I started experiencing bloating and pain. Not sure if I was glutened or if it was a result of the high sugar intake or another intolerance-- I have a "delicate" stomach, lol. So I won't say I was glutened but I will say that something didn't agree with me. Would come back, but maybe would order different things that don't have as much sugar. I've been wanting to try this location since I heard it was affiliated with Dublin. Came here before shopping around Broadway Plaza. We got a sea inside as it was 90 degrees out. We were promptly given water and menus but already knew what we wanted to order. They practically have the same menu as Dublin. I had my heart set on the garlic noods (no protein) and Mango Chicken. DD wanted a young coconut and the palata w/ coconut chicken and Hubs was venturing to a new dish. Salmon. The coconut drink was quite refreshing on a hot day. Palata came out piping hot and I couldn't wait to dip it into the curry fast enough to eat. The noods were so flavorful though a bit overcooked. The salmon was surprisingly tasty and not fishy at all. It was moist and had a gingery taste. I am always skeptical with fish whenever we order it at places that don't specialize in it. The dish I was most looking forward to was the Mango Chicken. It took awhile to come out as it came last. We ordered a side of coconut rice, which was tasty. Unfortunately the main dish wasn't. It lacked any flavor and needed some upmh and acidity. There wasn't any of the pungent sweet and sour flavors that I am used to with this dish. Just bland and tasteless. I noticed the table across the way from us also ordered the same and was hardly touched. I didn't bother taking leftovers home. To boot, the restrooms needed some serious maintenance. I've heard excellent things about Burmese cuisine from several people, but I never had the chance to try it out until a few months ago when a friend recommended that we get dinner at Burma 2. I searched online to find a good traditional Burmese dish for a first timer, and multiple sources pointed me to Moh Hin Gha (pureed catfish chowder). It turned out to be so delicious! I loved it! It reminded me of a soup version of this Filipino noodle called Palabok. I would highly recommend it for those not familiar with Burmese cuisine. My friend and I also shared an appetizer plate of Palata which is a flaky flatbread that is served with curry. This was also an excellent choice. I got to try a few bites of my friend's order too. Wow! I feel like it's so cliche to call a restaurant a "hidden gem" just because it's in the suburbs or not upscale or something like that. I'll refrain from using the term especially since the place was packed when we went for Valentine's Day. Add in the eye-catching building it's located in and this place is anything but hidden. That being said, Burmese cuisine in general is a bit of a hidden gem. Not very commonly found in the western world but so delicious. Our dinner at Burma 2 was oh so delicious! We started with samosas and chicken lettuce wraps. The sauces that came with the two dishes were great accompaniments however the dishes were great on their own. For salads, I had heard that their tea leaf salad was something of a specialty and it didn't disappoint. It has some common traits to an ordinary salad except kicked up a notch with nuts for a crunchy texture and the actual tea leaf itself provides a unique bitterness that I've never had in a salad before. My partner got the mango salad which he preferred because of the fresh, bright, sweetness of the salad. Our entrees were the Burmese shrimp and the basil and chile beef. I swear I could eat both of these dishes everyday for the rest of my life. The words: Depth. Of. Flavor. The shrimp had an incredible combo of sweetness and umami that came out so savory and mouthwatering. Also, I have to give props to the kitchen for perfectly cooking the shrimp. I was pleasantly surprised with the flavor of the beef as well. I thought it would be overly sweet like something from a Chinese takeout place however the flavor was so much more complex and savory. The chile came through beautifully and pairing it with the basil made it all taste very well spiced. Finished with a fried banana and ice cream for dessert. My bet is they don't make the ice cream in-house but regardless it was a perfectly sweet pairing with the banana which was beautifully fried. The lychee martini is decent; the wine list is better. One thing that really stood out to me about this place, was how friendly each and every waiter was. They were all smiley, friendly, and would interact with my kids which is always appreciated. It tastes so expertly layered and every bite is an absolute delight. I'm not going to lie, I honestly can't speak for many of the menu items beyond the TLS only because since discovering it, I've never had the need to order anything else. There was absolutely no service provided to us while we were there! We were provided with water when we were seated and everything else we needed, we had to ask for! We had to ask for someone to take our order, we had to ask for drink refills, we had to ask for the check. Two of orders were for green beans. My husband and I ALWAYS order Burma Green Beans, no matter what else we order. They were overcooked and mushy and inedible! Normally, i would ask for an item to be reprepared, but the ambiance, i.e. noise level was so loud, we just wanted to get out of there as soon as we could! It was about 7:00pm on a Friday night. The Burmese curry beef had the cheap tenderized meat that has the general consistency of an old boot. The sauce was flavorful but the meat itself was almost inedible. The only vegetable in the curry dish was about 1/4 of a potato. The coconut rice was sandpaper dry and tasteless. The noodle dish (Nan Guy Dok) was the best thing we ordered. The noodles were decent and the sauce was decent. There was about 1/4 of a chicken leg in there. Our friend got the salmon which was also overcooked, tasteless, and dry. We had lunch at Burma 2 on a Saturday, and although there were many open seats inside and out, the service provided was minimal. It appeared that everyone was running around, not knowing what to do. My companion made several comments to me about how bad the service at the restaurant was. The food was good and fresh. The reason for the one-star review is that I accidentally left my business debit card at the table. 2 days later, while I was far away in another state, I realized it was no longer in my possession. I immediately checked my bank account and saw that the last transaction was from Burma 2, with no other charges. I called the restaurant and, after three attempts, got nowhere trying to talk to someone. No matter what I did, I could not get anyone on the phone, it would just cut me off. However, a man from the restaurant called me back right away. I explained my situation, and he confirmed that the card was there. I explained I was out of town and asked if he would be so kind as to mail the card to me. He agreed with what I noticed was a bit of reluctance, which I found odd. I returned two days later, and it had not come. A week after I'd left it at the restaurant, it still hadn't arrived, so I called again. I spoke to the same person, who chuckled slightly when I explained my circumstances, and, again with a slight chuckle, said, "Maybe it will come on Monday." One week after our first conversation, the card still has not arrived. Today, I had to go to the bank to get a new card issued and complete the hours-long task of changing all my services that used the card to the new billing information. I have no proof that he did not send it, but I suspect he did not, based on his reluctance in the first conversation and the slight chuckles in the second. This is a bad way to do business, and although I really enjoyed this restaurant on numerous previous occasions, I won't go back. This is an excellent place for vegetarians and vegans. You can almost substitute just about any dish with tofu for protein. The service was good, food was also good. The sauces on the side are very small so I suggest ordering extra. The food itself was fresh and healthy. Would definitely come back. read more
