I was surprised at how good this beef was! People have always talked about how good Buona USED to be, and less about how good it IS. On the contrary, Buona IS good. The beef was so tender, the juice had a great beefiness, even if a little salty, the giardiniera is quite good with a nice olive-y character that I like from my giardiniera, and the roll was perfectly soft with a slight chew. The interior looks no different from your Portillo's or other Chicago based chain. We were looking for a Mexican place and stumbled on Buona. Honestly it was out of sheer desperation that we stopped bc we had been driving for 7 hours and were exhausted, cranky, starved and had to pee. Anyway, we took a long time ordering since we had never been there before and the girl at the register was really patient which I appreciate, instead of her being annoyed which she easily could have been. One of us got a burger which was above average, the other 3 of us got variations of the Italian beef. It was way better than we had anticipated. I got the sweet peppers and cheese which were perfect, but the hot peppers were good too. My only thing is the bread gets saturated with beef juices and that's not really my thing. Ultimately not my favorite part, though I understand that's how it's supposed to be. I'd definitely go back, even if I didn't get the same thing because the menu is a lot more expansive than just beef sandwiches. read more

This place never disappoints. They're quick, friendly, and they have a big menu. If you're there for what their famous for, that would be their Italian beefs. If you're opting for a healthier option- their salads are so succulent, you'll have a new found love for them. The employees here always go above and beyond when you are dining in the restaurant and the food is great. My only complaint is that EVERY time I order online, something is wrong with my order. My God Parents lived in Hillside and they use to take us to a place called Charger Inn for the best Italian Beef ever but sadly they closed down so when Buona Beef opened up down the road we were glad that there was a decent place to get an good Italian Beef sandwich again near us. They also serve deep dish pizza by the slice which is pretty good and their thin crust pizza is not bad either. The problem is that every time I'm in Chicago I gain about 10 pounds. read more

Buona is one of our regular places to eat, at least once every couple of weeks. Beef is very good as are the fries. Portillos might be a tad better, but not by much. The service here is always friendly, but I do suggest you check your order before leaving. The brownie shake is delicious. I come here for the low carb options, which is great that they actually have as menu items. The food is good. The service is some of the worst I've seen. I eat at buona...A LOT (top tier on their rewards program) the people are generally rude, undertrained, and just flat out don't care. I order two things off the menu, the easiest being a beef and sausage bowl with hot peppers instead of sweet peppers. I ordered that today and they got it wrong AGAIN. I got a beef bowl.....no sausage..... with sweet peppers. The only way you could get my order more wrong is to just give me an empty plastic container.I mean, it's not like I'm reading a laundry list type of order from Starbucks with 20 different exceptions. It's one substitution...To a main menu item. If the drive thru line is up to the order screen, you will almost always wait a minimum of 10 minutes in line. I actually kept count one week and they got my order wrong 70% of the time. I used to work in the service industry and the service here is awful. The buona in Frankfurt where I work has not gotten my order wrong once and they've been open for only a year ish. Get it together. read more

I want to love this place! I've been there over 20 times and the food is usually very good. It's hot and tasty, but that's not my issue with them. I'd say every few times I go there they screw up my order. Whether it's an item they forget to include or they give you a different item then you ordered. It's always something...now I'm confident they would refund/replace my item but no one has time for that. I usually just grunt and tell myself I'll never go there again.
