Bunna is my favorite place to eat, any day of the week, hands down! I am consistently impressed, even after having been here at least a dozen times! Fabulous, fresh- amazing! Not recommended for people who want real Ethiopian food !! I'm a huge fan of Ethiopian I've had Ethiopian food in New York, California, Atlanta, and Texas and saw this place so I decided to try it...worse mistake ever. The service is terrible I came with a group of three we all ordered tea the waitress came back 14 minutes later after( I timed it) we had to remind her of the tea she comes back and brings only two. Thinking maybe she was getting the other tea she completed forgot about our table I had to again remind her several minutes later instead of a tea she brings back a coffee that neither of us asked for. After we finally ordered our food 20 minutes later we realized the people next to us got there food way before us . After a couple more minutes the server comes brings out 2 dishes the first thing that came to mind was what the heck is this?!?! My food was a mushroom soup with one roll of injera the other was lentil soup with injera and the other was just vegetables with injera none of dishes came with sides very disappointing on top of that the injera is very very thin and they only give you one roll of it and if you run out you have to pay extra to get more. The service here is terrible in my opinion this restaurant is only targeting a certain crowd and it's very disrespectful and Ethiopian person will agree. Also they shouldn't promote live music that isn't even Ethiopian music just a hipster rock band. If you want to be in the crowd to be "different" come here but if you want the REAL and AUTHENTIC food this is not the place to be. This place is only about the look and not about the food. Due to a recent "stop eating meat, dairy, or eggs immediately or you will die" warning from my doctor, I'm currently and permanently on the prowl for good vegetarian restaurants. I'm not talking boring lousy Angelica Kitchen weirdness. I'm talking food. Anyway, my lady-friend was meeting me outside some grocery store on Knickerbocker in Bushwick and it was around 300 degrees outside. I texted her, "Baby, I don't wanna roast veggies or cook in any form, it's 300 degrees outside!" She agreed, so I Google Maps'd "vegetarian restaurant" and Bunna popped up less than five blocks away. We walked in, ordered the "Feast for Two" and the whole damn thing. My lady-friend could be scene licking the giant plate at the end of the meal. Guys, gals, everyone, this restaurant is no joke. It's filling. It's delicious. It's inexpensive. The wait staff is super nice. The food comes to you very quickly. You get to eat with your hands. They have any number of delicious alcohol-based and non-alcohol-based drinks (though I mostly stick with water, you know, as a sober fella). We've started eating here a couple days a week. I'd probably eat here every evening on my walk home from the studio but my no-meat-or-die doctor sent me to a nutritionist who said "Food variety is important." She had a bunch of degrees and mad food knowledge so I try to limit myself to eating no more than twice at any one restaurant per week. Cooking is nice, too, but not as nice as Bunna Cafe. read more

TLDR: Excellent food, terrible service This place has an awesome menu of all-vegan Ethiopian dishes, with a nice little prix-fixe ("feast") for lunch and brunch. The choices are plentiful and the prices just right. The service, however...this is where they lost 2 stars. You will wait forever to even get anybody's attention to place your order, your drinks will remain empty and you will almost feel the need to get up and go to the kitchen to cook the freaking meal yourself, it takes so long. The servers are quite inattentive and even when you're trying to pay your check, they are nowhere to be found, or even better, chilling at the bar and ignoring you. So although I really, really loved the food (don't ask me the names of the dishes because I don't speak Ethiopian), particularly the teff flatbread that can be used as a "fork" to lift your food off the plate, the service leaves a lot to be desired. If you want to visit Bunna, be sure to bring cash (they do have an ATM but it looks shady) and have plenty of time because you'll spend most of your visit being ignored instead of eating. But in fairness, once the food does arrive, it is insanely delicious. One last (gross) tip: Bunna's patrons don't like to flush the toilets, so use the bathrooms at your own risk. read more

I'll start with the good: the food is creative, delicious, affordable, and nutritious. The $8 prix-fixe lunch will fill you up without breaking the bank. Conveniently located close to the Morgan L train. Great neighborhood. And I'll finish with the not so good: TERRIBLE service. Awful, in fact. The servers act like they're doing you a favor by taking your order and bringing your food, they make you wait forever, don't check on you, and if you need anything (water refill, another drink, napkins, ANYTHING), be prepared to wait forever and get a ton of attitude when you finally get someone's attention and ask for something. I was tempted to leave without paying on my last visit, but I didn't want the bad karma. They probably wouldn't have noticed or cared anyway, LOL. Service was horrible, food took ages to come out, and our repeated attempts to get drink refills were mostly ignored. The food, however, was spectacular! The feast for 2 was huge and could've fed a third person, but we ate it all because it was so good. I'm vegan and it's good to know I can eat everything at this restaurant even if I don't exactly know what everything is (the menu items are all written in Ethiopian). I really did enjoy the food and the variety of options on the menu. However, like I said, the service leaves a lot to be desired and the restaurant wasn't busy enough to warrant a 30-40 minute wait for a simple appetizer platter. I came here for dinner last night. Really good stuff. Delicious food, warm atmosphere, and kind service. I love that the menu is all plant-based, and everything is fresh and packed with flavor. I got a Meal, which allowed me to pick out 5 dishes from the menu, and was served on top of and along side injera. The food eats very nourishingly and is filling without making you feel gross or uncomfortable. The injera here is extra good, some of the tangiest and spongiest I've had in a while. I love the kale avocado salad enough that I make a version of it it at home. The only thing I dont like is the injera soaked in sunflower milk. They have gluten free injera, if I can remember to order it a day in advance. If not, I get their perfectly cooked rice as an injera substitute. Even as a kid I was very adventurous when it came to food but i never felt any kind of love for Ethiopian food. I'm not sure why. I just couldnt get into it. That all changed with Bunna. I had a friend order this food and get it delivered to my place and it was UNBELIEVABLY GOOD. its delicous and whenever ive sat down to eat ive felt very well taken care of by the staff. It was my very first time trying this type of food, after walking in and seated the waitress explained everything but I felt a little rushed, after ordering I didn't see my waitress till I was almost finished with my meal, a hot cup of water took about 10 mins to get to me. I didn't get to see the coffee ceremony they do but I did have the coffee and it is really good and really strong.
