    Steak Suya Bowl
    Camille G.

This was too good! It tasted so fresh and was filling enough but not heavy. The bowl is huge and packed with veggies and meat. I wish I lived in NYC, they would see me every week! I'm happy there were places to sit outside too, because I couldn't wait to get to my hotel to enjoy this meal. Service was nice as well!

I've been waiting to try this place since my last visit to New York but didn't have the chance to get it last time. This time, I made it a priority to stop by. The tiny shop had a beautiful mural outside, and the inside has so much character. The employee behind the counter was so amicable with an infectious smile, I loved talking with her and was laughing while I waited for my food. I got a medium chicken bowl with medium spice, kale base, vegetables, and a plantain (which was an extra $1.50). I got the sauces on the side, but the employee recommended that I get it on my bowl because of the kale base since it would otherwise be dry. I followed her advice but she also gave me more of both sauces on the side -- so generous! This bowl was so filling and everything I needed it to be. The chicken was great, and I loved the veggies. Kale can be a hard base because of its toughness, but it was perfect here. The plantain was rather dry and was only half of a plantain, so next time I would ditch that. The sauces were so good and each brought their own complementary elements to the bowl. I would definitely come here again and try some of their other protein options because they all look great!

While I've never previously had Nigerian Suya, it's part of a greater tradition of West African grilled meats which includes Senegalese dibi, the powerful scents of which encode my memories of nights spent walking along the VDN in Dakar. I was thankful that Brooklyn Suya offers a vegetarian recreation of its namesake dish with tofu so that I could finally partake in this tradition. The suya rub itself is phenomenal. It's heavy on peanuts, which goes perfectly with the smokiness of the grilled tofu. They marinated it sufficiently so that there was not a hint of blandness, a frequent issue with tofu on the BBQ. The suya is served in a Chipotle-esque bowl format - I opted for a rice base and an egg as an add-on. I didn't expect the egg to be boiled - it was definitely overcooked, so I think next time I'll opt for the plantains.

First time trying Brooklyn Suya and I got the Chicken suya bowl with kale (alt rice), plantain (alt Egg, Mushrooms, or for addtl $$ Veggies or avocado), and both peanut & sweet sauces. The bowl is topped off generously with a topping of their dry/powdered suya seasoning (which they also had in bottles to sell) & a side of fresh cucumbers/onions. It was giving African Chipotle in the best ways esp since you could choose your spice level. I couldn't finish my bowl. Nice flavors, but next time I'll do less wet sauces because the peanut sauce was giving hollandaise. Now, this is not a 5 star establishment or a Chinese spot. It has character. The staff are nice enough, but you can tell they're fighting for their lives because there were ~ 6 delivery guys waiting for orders, 5 walk-ins and the waiting space only fits around 4. I waited outside and ended up eating on the convertible benches in front of the restaurant. You can't tell if the benches are there by happenstance or intentional, but overall I'd recommend. The bright colors on the exterior and the outdoor seating area definitely gives that Brooklyn summer/quick stop and go vibe.

Came here with my cousin and the service was great. The establishment is very small just take your order and go. They do have 2 benches outside if you want to sit and enjoy the new york breeze. All the bowls are made with fresh ingredients which I love. I had the eggplant bowl and it was delicious the cashier reccomended the sauces for me to add to my meal. If you like spice I say go mild it is very tasty. I would go back to try more.

shrimp and tofu bowl, lago spice. Kale and rice base.

Its spicyyyyyyyyy. I got a bowl with shrimp and tofu. Kale and rice base. The shrimps size I loveee, tofu taste like firm but got mushy chicken. Sounds weird but taste right. We both order the Lago spice, did not regret it. Perfectly heated and leaves your mouth tingling. I love vegetables so I appreciate the tomatoes and cucumbers. The rice in my bowl tasted just ok, in my opinion it was a bit mushy and grainy. Kale is salad style.

Steak suya bowl with eggplant, veggies, and plantain

Rating: 3.5 based on 4 delivery experiences First encounter: I did a lot of research before trying them out. I couldn't find adequate descriptions about the sauce profiles, what type of veggies came with the add-on veggies, type of rice, etc. Eventually, I figured some of it out & winged the rest. It was a great winging. My first delivery was with a friend: 1 steak and 1 chicken bowl. Their chicken was dry dry, so disappointing, but my steak was love. The flavors were great. The eggplant was chef's kiss, and the plantain style was interesting, but it worked. We were down to try it again very soon! Downhill: The 2nd delivery I stuck with steak & decided to try shrimp. It was cool but not like the first time. 3rd delivery: steak only bowl tasted like liver. It was a weird consistency. I could tell it was the quality of meat but decided to give them another try. The 4th delivery has almost sealed the deal. All 6 or 7 pieces of the steak were pure fat. I have never encountered that anywhere before. Poor steak quality is going to mess up a good thing. Final thoughts: The seasoning sauces & veggies are great, but the meat has to match up. Sadly, Idk if I'm willing to try them again. I hope it gets more consistent. These 4 deliveries were over a 2 week span, so much opportunity to see improvement, but sadly, it just got worse. I gave it 4 chances because I really wanted to support them.

Unfortunately that meant the bread got the microwave treatment instead of proper defrosting and toasting. If you've ever tried microwaved frozen bread, you know the texture I'm describing. The crispy honey bean (akara) burger itself was quite tasty. The patty had a crispy exterior and creamy bean paste interior, dressed up with vegan cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and pickles. It's a nice alternative for vegetarians who dislike fake meat substitutes. They don't purport the beans taste like anything but beans. The jollof rice completed the meal. It had a rich tomato base with great depth of flavor that made everything feel more substantial. The owner was genuinely sweet about the whole rushed situation, and based on reviews, I know this is the kind of place that shines under normal circumstances. This is primarily a takeout spot with a few high-top tables by the window if you want to eat in. I'd definitely give it another shot during regular operating hours when they're not scrambling to accommodate early birds.

STEPH JUDGEMENT: A unique vegan fast food experience…read more I'd read about them in the New Yorker and was intrigued. A vegan Nigerian fast food joint in Brooklyn? Why not! We'd never had Nigerian food but were game to try. We took a bus to a decidedly unglamorous part of town, to a humble storefront with a couple of small outdoor tables. Inside was very small, with just some bar seating by the window and a bench. We were a bit early for the lunch rush, so had the place to ourselves. The nice owner came out to greet us and take our order. The hubby ordered the Classic Akara Burger, which was their signature deep fried honey bean fritter patty on a bun with tomato, lettuce, cucumbers and vegan mayo. It was good but a bit bland. My Oyster Mushroom Wrap with bean fritter pieces and veggies had more zip, courtesy of their Nigerian red sauce, and was quite sizable--I really enjoyed it. It was a very hot day and they had no AC inside (just fans) so we opted to eat at one the outside tables, which turned out to be much cooler and quite pleasant. If you're vegan/vegetarian or just curious about what Nigerian flavors are like, I'd say it's very much worth a try.

I always get a combination dinner. This time I tried the Siga Wett beef stew with Ethiopian spices - very delicious! Spicy but not too spicy. Ethiopian food can be addictive, years ago I was definitely into eating a lot of Ethiopian. New York City has some great Ethiopian. If I were a tourist here, it would be on my list under "things to try." Or at least to try once ! I also had 2 vegetarian dishes - the Shiro Wett and the Messir Wett. The Shiro was made with beans. The Mesir was made with lentils. I've had the Shiro and Mesir Watt many times before - both at Ghenet as well as other Ethiopian restaurants (Awash Ethiopian on the upper west side). I think Ghenet has some of the most flavorful dishes in the city. They don't overdo it - just the right amount of spicy hotness. Overall, my favorite dish from the combination platter was the Shiro Wett. It had a light touch of smokiness that went really well with the beans. Very filling and delicious with the injera. I wish they offered fitfit salad - the menu has Ethiopian tomato salad but there are no photos of it on the online menu. There are photos of some of the other menu items but not all. I think they'd sell more stuff if there were photos since not everyone is familiar with all of the various dishes. Just a thought.

First thing- The family deal states that it feeds a family of 4 (which is a complete lie because it feeds 1 person!) and comes with all of these things. My order was missing the jollof rice, suya, puff puff, and the 2 sides of spinach! Second thing- They lied and said that the fish is Tilapia fish but it is NOT!!! The fish that they used is cheap and nasty Swai fish. It has a completely different taste from Tilapia fish as it is fishy tasting with a really soft soft texture. The "Tilapia " was disgusting! It was flavorless and barely cooked. Third thing- The Egusi was the worst that I ever had in my life! It did not even taste like egusi! There was no maggi, crayfish, or flavors added and it was drenched in palm oil. They also did not cook the Egusi all the way through and it had huge huge chunks in it. Fourth thing- The sauce or "stew" that they put on this fish was also terrible as well! I completely wasted $70 on this restaurant! I would NOT recommend ever buying anything from this restaurant. They lied about the portion size and what came with the meal and the food is gross! I don't know how this restaurant is in operation. I'm not even sure if the people who made this food is Nigerian because none of this food tasted right! DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE! You've been warned!!!! BTW - I threw everything in the trash!
