Sooo good. Oh my gosh! I was annoyed at first with this establishment because I walked over only to find the doors locked. Instead of leaving I decided to put in an order online. I was annoyed again when I saw that the price was around $24 dollars. When I completed my order I became annoyed for the third time when I saw the order would take more than an hour (and I was going to be picking up the order). I immediately called and they assured me that the food would be ready in 20 minutes. 15 minutes after the call I got a text message informing me that the food was ready. I went to pick up my food and walked home. Once I got in, I pulled the bowl out of the bag and was amazed by what I saw and smelled - a full bowl of food that smelled so delicious my mouth watered! I've been waiting to try this place since my last visit to New York but didn't have the chance to get it last time. This time, I made it a priority to stop by. The tiny shop had a beautiful mural outside, and the inside has so much character. The employee behind the counter was so amicable with an infectious smile, I loved talking with her and was laughing while I waited for my food. I got a medium chicken bowl with medium spice, kale base, vegetables, and a plantain (which was an extra $1.50). I got the sauces on the side, but the employee recommended that I get it on my bowl because of the kale base since it would otherwise be dry. I followed her advice but she also gave me more of both sauces on the side -- so generous! This bowl was so filling and everything I needed it to be. The chicken was great, and I loved the veggies. Kale can be a hard base because of its toughness, but it was perfect here. The plantain was rather dry and was only half of a plantain, so next time I would ditch that. The sauces were so good and each brought their own complementary elements to the bowl. I would definitely come here again and try some of their other protein options because they all look great! read more

Love this place! It's one of our go-to places for take out and delivery. I love the shrimp bowl--lots of shrimp, really flavorful! The rice is delicious. Just a really great meal overall. Two complaints: the staples on the lids feel a little dangerous--I feel like a staple could accidentally end up in the food. Maybe use tape instead? And then, the kale! I love greens, and I love kale, but the kale in the bowls is really tough. They need to be massaged more, or perhaps cut into strips or sauteed? read more

While I've never previously had Nigerian Suya, it's part of a greater tradition of West African grilled meats which includes Senegalese dibi, the powerful scents of which encode my memories of nights spent walking along the VDN in Dakar. I was thankful that Brooklyn Suya offers a vegetarian recreation of its namesake dish with tofu so that I could finally partake in this tradition. The suya rub itself is phenomenal. It's heavy on peanuts, which goes perfectly with the smokiness of the grilled tofu. They marinated it sufficiently so that there was not a hint of blandness, a frequent issue with tofu on the BBQ. The suya is served in a Chipotle-esque bowl format - I opted for a rice base and an egg as an add-on. I didn't expect the egg to be boiled - it was definitely overcooked, so I think next time I'll opt for the plantains. read more

First time trying Brooklyn Suya and I got the Chicken suya bowl with kale (alt rice), plantain (alt Egg, Mushrooms, or for addtl $$ Veggies or avocado), and both peanut & sweet sauces. The bowl is topped off generously with a topping of their dry/powdered suya seasoning (which they also had in bottles to sell) & a side of fresh cucumbers/onions. It was giving African Chipotle in the best ways esp since you could choose your spice level. I couldn't finish my bowl. Nice flavors, but next time I'll do less wet sauces because the peanut sauce was giving hollandaise. Now, this is not a 5 star establishment or a Chinese spot. It has character. The staff are nice enough, but you can tell they're fighting for their lives because there were ~ 6 delivery guys waiting for orders, 5 walk-ins and the waiting space only fits around 4. I waited outside and ended up eating on the convertible benches in front of the restaurant. You can't tell if the benches are there by happenstance or intentional, but overall I'd recommend. The bright colors on the exterior and the outdoor seating area definitely gives that Brooklyn summer/quick stop and go vibe. read more

Came here with my cousin and the service was great. The establishment is very small just take your order and go. They do have 2 benches outside if you want to sit and enjoy the new york breeze. All the bowls are made with fresh ingredients which I love. I had the eggplant bowl and it was delicious the cashier reccomended the sauces for me to add to my meal. We both order the Lago spice, did not regret it. Perfectly heated and leaves your mouth tingling. I love vegetables so I appreciate the tomatoes and cucumbers. Rating: 3.5 based on 4 delivery experiences First encounter: I did a lot of research before trying them out. I couldn't find adequate descriptions about the sauce profiles, what type of veggies came with the add-on veggies, type of rice, etc. Eventually, I figured some of it out & winged the rest. It was a great winging. My first delivery was with a friend: 1 steak and 1 chicken bowl. Their chicken was dry dry, so disappointing, but my steak was love. The flavors were great. The eggplant was chef's kiss, and the plantain style was interesting, but it worked. We were down to try it again very soon! Downhill: The 2nd delivery I stuck with steak & decided to try shrimp. It was cool but not like the first time. 3rd delivery: steak only bowl tasted like liver. It was a weird consistency. I could tell it was the quality of meat but decided to give them another try. The 4th delivery has almost sealed the deal. All 6 or 7 pieces of the steak were pure fat. I have never encountered that anywhere before. Poor steak quality is going to mess up a good thing. Final thoughts: The seasoning sauces & veggies are great, but the meat has to match up. Sadly, Idk if I'm willing to try them again. I hope it gets more consistent. These 4 deliveries were over a 2 week span, so much opportunity to see improvement, but sadly, it just got worse. I gave it 4 chances because I really wanted to support them. read more

Suya has become my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. Every time I've ordered takeout from here, I've gotten delicious food and great value. For under $15, you can get a pretty huge portion of food that can easily last you two meals. My go-to order is the shrimp Suya bowl. The shrimp are always cooked perfectly and coated in a generous dusting of Suya (peanut spice). As sides, I've tried the egg, plantains, and avocado. The egg is fine, it just a hard-boiled egg. The plantains are good but a little tough in my opinion. The helping of avocado was pretty small the one time I got it. When you order in person, they'll ask you if you want their aioli and honey sauce. My personal recommendation is to get both of them and get a lot. They both add a ton of flavor and texture variety to your bowl, in addition to making it even more filling. Random tidbits: The menu in the store doesn't mention that avocado as a side and kale+rice as a base cost extra. The Suya spice ranges in spiciness from mild to extreme, and in my unseasoned palette's experience, the mild is still decently spicy. Lastly, kale is one of the side options but the bowl comes with kale anyways, so maybe better to pick a different side for more variety. read more

In all honesty, I visited this place with my Nigerian fiancé, and we both did takeout here. I opted for the salmon suya, and it was truly exceptional. On the other hand, my fiancé, being Nigerian, didn't find the lamb suya quite up to par with what he's accustomed to back home, so that's why I'm rating it 4 stars. They've gotten a little pricier and unfortunately it's $1.50 more for half rice half kale as the base. But it's still super affordable at $15 for a medium bowl with shrimp. They're usually pretty busy at dinner time (anytime after 6pm) but they'll tell you the approximate wait time which is helpful. They still have some seats outside but honestly with the park so close (a little less than a mile away) it's a great park picnic food. read more

Glad I finally tried this! The flavor of the suya is delicious! I got shrimp and my husband got chicken. The rice was flavorful, the kale was fresh, and the egg was literally an egg lol but I like that you get an entire egg! The sauces that come with the food were both delicious and really complimented the flavor. I'd recommend getting extra on the side. My only complaint is that the chicken, shrimp, and plantain were all quite hard like they had been over-grilled or overcooked. Forgot to get the person in the front name but she was so nice and she told me how everything works since it was my first time. Then I told her that she can just pick for me her favorite. She picked a shrimp bowl and it had kale, rice, cucumbers, red onions, avocado, tomatoes, and some spicy spice. It also came with a sauce and Aioli. I ran home and forgot to take a picture of my bowl first because I couldn't wait any longer but they do pack that bowl up with food. I've made all kinds of questionable life decisions, but ordering delivery from Brooklyn Suya for last Friday night's dinner is not one of them. In fact, wish I had done so sooner. The steak suya and chicken suya bowls we ordered were fabulous. Each one was generous in portion size, with a tremendous amount of meat, so much that we were able to save leftovers for another meal. The meat and additional peanut sauce were truly the stars of the meal. The grilled chunks were bursting with spices and heat. I liked the charred texture, though they could have been a bit more tender. We ordered our bowls with rice, kale, and plantains. While we have enjoyed Nigerian cuisine in the past, this was our first time having suya. Apparently it is a typical Nigerian street food with origins from the northern nomads who herd cattle.
