Aunthetic Ghanaian food that's conveniently located in Flatbush, which is lucky for me. It's a bit strange for the area, since the neighborhood is predominantly Carribean, but thankfully Akwaaba graces us (the name itself means, "Welcome", in Twi). I was told you know it's a legit place since inside, there's hanging one of the most common Ghanaian house decorations, the wall mat with the famous woman smiling from ear to ear, holding a vessel and a large bowl. This place is definitely a hole in the wall, resembling more of a closet on the side of a building than an actual eatery. It's cash only, be prepared, and also you might have to ring the doorbell since the guy isn't always there attentive waiting at the door. Prices were fair for what they were offering. We got the Banku with okra soup and Waakye with goat meat. Both were legit, according to my friend, and reminded him of home so much that he closed his eyes. I found Akwaaba on Yelp specifically because I was craving fufu. As it was my first foray into Ghanian cuisine, I definitely left satisfied. The vibes of the restaurant and the food itself felt as warm and comforting as a homemade meal. The space itself is mainly for takeout, so I would not recommend sitting as there is only one table available. We ordered the fufu with okra soup with goat ($25) and the jollof rice with meat ($20). The portions are quite generous and these two entrées were enough to feed four. I am a big fan of okra, and this soup was definitely hitting all those texture points but I did find the goat meat to be a little too gamey to handle. The fufu was soft and a little denser than I expected-- I always thought it had an almost whipped texture but it was a pleasant surprise nonetheless. For the last 6-ish years, Akwaaba Restaurant has been my favorite Ghanaian spot in Brooklyn. I only get one dish but I have never ever EVER been let down after ordering it: fried beef, Jollof, plantain, and a mixture of sautéed peppers, onions, and carrots. It's about $20 for this but the portion of Jollof and beef is large enough for me to split into 2 meals (once I add my own greens to it, because broccoli goes with everything lol). The food is spicy but so full of flavor that I don't mind. As far as the service, I am always happy to see that the chef / owner(?) is there and well. He's cool and really takes pride in the food, which is beautiful to see. The orders usually take a long time to be ready but it's worth the wait. So I recommend placing your order over the phone ahead of time because it's not really a dine-in type of spot. I love the food at Akwaaba Restaurant dearly and look forward to visiting whenever I'm in the area and have a craving for Jollof. This was my first time trying fufu and West African food in general, and I was not disappointed. The owner was the sweetest man who chatted with my friends and I. While the wait for the food was around 20 minutes, the soup was well worth it. The goat is gamey, but the okra was so well cooked I forgot how much I disliked okra on its own. The seasoning was so flavorful and paired perfectly with the soft fufu. Everything came to us hot and steaming, even after thirty minutes. We had ordered the fufu and okra soup with goat meat which was $25. The price was a bit steep, BUT this meal fed four people so it was very much worth it. The store itself was quite small, with little to no seating except for a couple of bar stools. However, this is no problem since the restaurant is so close to prospect park. A friend and I visited Akwaaba on a recent spring evening. Though the lights were on, the door was locked and we didn't see anyone inside. We reached the owner via phone and he kindly came to the door and let us in. We sat at Akwaaba's one table and shared one of the dinner plates, which included a bowl of stew, lots of rice and peas, and vegetables. We tried one of the bottle malt beverages, too. My husband is West African and was excited I found this place in the neighborhood. As we drove up, I was pretty proud of myself, but it was so dirty and smelly inside that he decided to leave. The service was unclear and he got ignored at first and after a few minutes of waiting in the ambiance decided it was not worth the risk, no matter how much he wanted the food. He is about 800% less concerned about the setting of the restaurant than I am, so I know if he departed, it was bad news. Well. It is my first time eating at this restaurant. I enjoyed it. I have been craving Ghanaian food for weeks... specifically banku and okro stew... so the verdict. I believe it is good. I had the pleasure of having dinner here last night and I'm counting the days til I can handle another large portion of carbs and red meat. I called 20 mins ahead of time to order goat light soup with fufu. The person on the phone was sweet and even remembered me when I arrived at the restaurant to pick up the order. The restaurant is small and the lighting wasn't the best but this food was RIDICULOUS!! $14 bought me enough food for two people, I've never been given so much fufu in one sitting before and the soup was spicy but still full of flavor. It traveled well in its plastic container. I'm going back in exactly two weeks to try their jollof rice next. I've been looking for an African Restaurant everywhere, and I finally found one. It was very close to home. It was my first time trying Okra Soup and Fufu. When I came to the store, I thought it was closed. I didn't know I had to ring a doorbell. I rang the doorbell and a man approached. He was very sweet. I said it's my first time here. He said I can tell. I said do you have Fufu. He said yes. I said okay and what do you usually eat with it. He said we have peanut butter soup and okra soup, but people mostly eat Fufu with okra soup. I said okay. It was $20. I said okay that's not as cheap as I accepted it to be. The okra soup was in a big bowl. It wasn't in a small bowl. When I tried it, it taste really good. The goat meat was so tender. I didn't like the cow skin. Was too tough. I don't know why they don't cook the cow skin. My poor teeth. I didn't like Fufu. I thought I would like it, but I would come back for the okra soup though. It had fish bones, goat meat, and cow skin. Also, they should update the place. It looks depressing in there honestly. Originally from London, UK in which there's an extensive amount of Ghanaian restaurants to choose from. Very different from New York, so when I came across Akwaaba restaurant, my heart was full. Authentic Ghanaian food at its finest. I got the banku and okro soup and cried with happiness whilst eating it LOL !! It was magnificent. Wanted to give this place a few more yelp reviews! It's an unassuming restaurant with only a few tables -- most of their business is take-out. Don't be shy ringing the buzzer when you get in. The cook seemed surprised that we were there, since we'd never eaten Ghanaian food, but she gave us some great suggestions for fried fish with rice and black-eyed peas and vegetables, and we were very satisfied! The prices were reasonable (two very large entrees, two bottles of water - $30). FYI: I also have a gluten sensitivity, and found it easy to eat there with no reactions. Excellent food! We stopped by Akwaaba after craving Ghanaian food. It's quite the hole in the wall, but we like it that way. There are a few tables for sitting so we dined in. It's typical Ghanaian style, bowl of water to wash your hands. My husband and palm nut soup and banku and I had jollof rice. We were more than satisfied. My husband was able to speak with his fellow Ghanaians in Twi and just for an hour or so we felt like we were back in the motherland. Staff were nice and friend, service was quick. You have to be buzzed into the place and there is only one man there and he made it difficult to figure out what I would want to eat.
