Newtown wins the illustrious prize of being the best restaurant open before 5pm in an area where there is basically no other competition or even options. But it's also genuinely a solid little vegan restaurant with great hummus so it's not like I'm complaining. The folks here are nice and the food is solid -- sure I've had things here that didn't blow me away, but I've never had anything bad. Also the prices are entirely reasonable (especially seeing as getting anything delivered around here in general costs $20 minimum in fees, so what's a stroll to Newtown to pick up a $13 hummus, yknow?). Highly recommend their hummus and Zatar bread, and I like their little burekas that change day by day. Also recommend catching them at a time where they're playing bizarre ominous ambient noise music... always a joy! read more

This is an intimate, all vegetarian/vegan Middle Eastern restaurant serving affordable, flavorful, and delicious food in a quiet, industrial area of Brooklyn's East Williamsburg. There's limited interior seating space and some outdoor seating, but when we went on a weeknight for dinner, it was pretty empty. The inside had interesting vibes-- dim lighting, indie decor, and folk/indie/rock instrumental music playing in the background. You seat yourself and order at the front counter. The night menu is less expansive than the day menu (which ends at 4pm), but it still offered a diverse and delicious selection. I tried the following items: - Pan-fried Halloumi Sandwich: A really flavorful, tasty, and filling sandwich! The bread was so perfectly toasted-- crispy, yet fluffy. The filling had a great mixture of textures: soft roasted eggplant paired with a firmer pan-fried halloumi cheese block. - Masabacha Hummus with 2 pita pockets: All the ingredients in this dish-- tahini, chickpeas, spices, and s'hug-- provided such a delicious combination of textures and flavors when mixed together: earthy flavors combined with creamy and gritty textures. The pita pockets were also warm and soft. Super filling and tasty! My friends ordered the Seitan Chorizo and Vegan Majadra Plate. Both really enjoyed them! The seitan was very flavorful and delicious and the lentil/rice in the Majadra plate had a great flavor and spice profile. The price was also good, especially for how filling and satiating the food is: sandwiches were between $10-14, plates are ~$14, and hummus is ~$12. Such a gem of a restaurant in the border of Williamsburg and Bushwick! All my coworkers at the studio love this spot since it's the perfect takeout meal - it's vegetarian and super yummy. Cannot stress enough that we literally get food 1-2x a week there every week. My personal favorites are the shakshuka skillet (eggs can be a little over cooked) and the majadra plate. They're always super fast with takeout and we've been there so many times we know the people there. They're always great with the service. Newtown has been one of my go-to spots for the last nine years. Wayback, when they only had the small room where the kitchen and register is. Back then, it was quiet and spooky to eat there. It was cash only, and the menu was limited compared to what it is now. I've loved Newtown from day one! I came across it on the Yelp app when I was searching for a hummus spot, so I believe this location was named hummus something before. Anyhow, I've been eating at Newtown for a hot minute now so I can tell you if it's legit or not. As I said, they've come a long way. They've got a second room; it's more spacious. The menu has more options. Now they take credit and debit cards. The bathroom is still down the hallway, the spooky hallway, and (freezing ass hallway in the winter), which is my only complaint about Newtown. All that aside, nothing but great things. If it's packed, it's never too full. At least it has never been out of the many times I've visited. The staff is friendly and chill and is not on top of you. You can sit there to eat and drink your coffee, work on your laptop, and take your sweet time, and nobody is pestering you. When it comes to the menu, the Halloumi Sandwich is my go-to dish, but the falafel is also very flavorful. 90% of the time that I visit, I order the olives and pickles because I am a big fan, and I don't know what it is about theirs specifically, but I'm obsessed. Get the hot harissa sauce to pour on everything because everything is better with hot sauce. I love visiting Newtown during the Spring and Summer months when the weather is beautiful to enjoy your meal outside. I highly recommend this place! read more

Absolutely amazing. Not one thing that is missing. I have eaten at this place three days in a row, and I am already thinking about my lunch today :). When you walk in, you see a cash register with the kitchen in the back, pastry displayed filled with yummy looking pastries! They have a table in the first room as well, but the main dining are is in the room next to it. Long communal tables make it easy to make friends if you come alone! They have a coat hanger along the walls which is a big plus. The menu is simple. They mark all the vegan dishes for you (you dont have to be the annoying customer asking if it's vegan), separate menu for beer and wine and a small specials sign on the table. We have tried the hummus and pita, and oh my god! It was unbelievably good. The pita bread was warm, puffy, crunchy on the outside and super soft on the inside. Their hummus comes seasoned with paprika, parsley, olive oil on top, we even had left over hummus for our sandwiches. Oh, and it comes with Harissa hot sauce. I always get a falafel sandwich-can't go wrong with that. It is served with a mixed greens salad and two pickles! The sandwich is cut in half, each side is topped with onion, tomato, cucumber and tahini on top. On the bottom of the sandwich is hummus, then falafel. It is out of this world. Definitely one of the best falafel sandwiches I have ever had. My boyfriend tried the last sandwich on the menu, She-something :P. It was served with two pickles and a pepperoncini. The sandwich had onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, soft boiled egg and tahini. Soooo good, especially once the yolk mixed with all the veggies. We also tried the shawarma sandwich with seitan, delicious, but probably wouldn't get again. Their beers go from $3-$6, I had Pilsner and it was $5. They offer bottled drinks- Pilot kombuchas $6, San Pellegrino $2, and I saw they had cream soda, coke, etc. Our bill came down to $33 with the drinks + tip. Very cheap. Right off the Morgan stop on the L, very easy to find. The bathroom was clean. Staff was friendly, and I really enjoyed the calming music! I ordered a delivery which came on time, everything was correct, and they added a side of hot sauce in the bag! Just a heads up- the delivery c charge is high, $4 I believe. I highly highly highly recommend this place. Just moved to the neighborhood so I'm obviously on a quest to figure out the best spots. I got the halloumi sandwich and my god was it good. Flavor well rounded, on point. I will say I wish the focaccia was toasted but this isn't enough for me to knock anything off. Every bite was delicious. Falafel sandwich is also great and very reasonably priced. Tahini hummus also is bomb but my favorite item is their harissa. It's herby and spicy and should be sold in larger quantities so I can adorn various food items with it. Def recommend! read more

We ended up here by chance (lucky us) and if I were a local I'd be checking into this place weekly! Another bonus is that this gem was significantly cheaper than anywhere I had gone in my 3 day visit to Brooklyn! My gf and I shared the pickles and olives, tabuleh, the masabacha hummus plate, and the seitan sandwich. The pita, the pita, the pita. Omg. So soft, so warm, so perfect, so pita! The hummus was solidly one of the best I've ever had, if not ever. The chorizo seitan sandwich was also top notch. The seitan was so well executed I felt immediate sadness in realizing that I had to share this dish. Our friends loved the grape leaves as well as their hummus and sandwich. I really enjoy this little place, I probably eat here once a week before practice. Usually I'll order the halloumi sandwich, and it is really REALLY great! Their hummus is yummy and I've had a few of their seasonal soups, and they have always been tasty. I tried their seitan sandwich the other day, I'm not a huge seitan fan, so I suppose that's why I wasn't wild about it. I've been sitting here working a few times, and I like the atmosphere. I believe it's a common company in New York (can't remember the name), but it's better than that $5 you're spending at Starbucks. For appetizers, we've had both the hummus plate and labne with za'atar. The bread they give you comes incredibly nice and warm, fluffy, all that good stuff. I can't say much more about hummus, given that it's delicious, you should eat it all. The halloumi sandwich. This is a MUST have on your first visit. If you've never had halloumi before, it's a type of cheese (non-melting) from the Cyprus region I believe.
