I was craving falafel and this is one of the few places that popped up in the neighborhood. I ordered a falafel sandwich and it was fresh and flavorful. I would definitely order again. Israeli style with pickles, which I love. The chickpea soup was a standout. So flavorful and nourishing; definitely a nod to the sopa de garbanzos that I grew up with. The generous portion of labane is rich and complimented by herbs and an excellent olive oil. But it only comes with one pita! Personally, I'd prefer a smaller portion with more bread. Ok, first, let's be accurate about a few things. Etymologically, "batata" comes from the Spanish for "potato." This is a nod to "Sephardic" Jews, from the Hebrew word for the Iberian Peninsula (by definition, Spain and Portugal; after "expulsion," this came to include a diaspora more broadly northern African. In order words, western and southern European, not Eastern like Ashkenazi Jews.) read more

Wow! I've never had sweet potato falafel but it might be my new obsession now that I've been introduced to it. It's got a more earthy and sweet taste than the regular chickpea falafels. We got: Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich 10/10 Sweet Potato Falafel Sandwich 10/10 I'm actually quite surprised as I've always thought Falafel Tanami would be my favorite falafel sandwich place but this place is pretty comparable. Their sandwiches have different fillings and they have more options here. They are very generous with the portion size and definitely fill up the sandwich even for a take out order. I love the beets in the sweet potato falafel. If you want meat the chicken schnitzel is delicious and unique option. Definitely give their sweet potato falafel a try! read more

Israeli food is one of my favorites-- the fresh salads and seared proteins all seasoned to perfection with spices and high quality olive oil are the stuff of gods. It's one of the cuisines correlated with the longest life span so maybe there really is something to it and if eating falafel is treating my body like a temple then give me a lifetime supply of it. This is a casual cafe where you order and pay at the register and bus your own table. There's plenty of indoor seating but it was a nice day so we sat at one of their outdoor tables, which was great for people watching along busy Fort Hamilton Parkway. I always have high hopes for falafel but good falafel where not only is it crispy, the interior is full of good flavor. Thankfully Batata's was of the good variety, each bite pairing deliciously with their tahini and hot sauce. The schnitzel and waffle was a great take on a chicken and waffle, with pillowy, fresh waffles and syrup. Hearing longtime raves about this neighborhood spot, I gave it a try. I made a pickup order for takeout on a weekday evening. When I arrived, the staff there was distracted and didn't seem to be aware of my order. They asked me to wait, and though it became apparent that they missed the order on a quiet night (how does that happen?) they didn't inform me and I had to wait there in the restaurant nearly 20 minutes after the estimated pickup time. When I got home, the chicken schwarma sandwich was ice cold. I was confused, both since I waited for them to prepare my order, so it didn't sit around to cool, and schwarma is always hot. I came back the next day and I spoke to a manager who wasn't there the previous night. I asked if the schwarma was supposed to be cold and she said, no, it's supposed to be hot. When I said the one I ordered the night before was cold, she offered that it may have cooled after it was made. I said, no, I had to wait for the staff to make it, and it wasn't just cool, it was ice cold as if it had come straight out of a refrigerator. Her response was noncommittal. I didn't come in to demand a refund or a discount on another meal, but I got the impression that the feedback wasn't going to land anywhere where an improvement would be made. I've worked in food service, and as a manager, I would attempt some kind of gesture to this situation to retain a customer, but no such effort was made. My partner's falafel was almost devoid of flavor, which in my experience is a first. It was my first and last time ordering from them. read more

Small quaint Israeli cafe good for breakfast and brunch. We ordered a mix of the hummuses, falafel salad, and falafel pitas. All we're tasty and fresh. I had high hopes for this spot based on the glowing reviews. I bookmarked this spot for years. When I finally got a chance to try this place out, I was thoroughly disappointed. Stopped by for lunch and ordered a few items and a drink. The food was lacking flavor, mostly bland. Hummus was below average. Had the fries which was less than mediocre. Batata is Hebrew/Arabic for sweet potato, so try their signature sweet potato falafel. At $8 for a whole wheat pita (sandwich), it's a satisfying vegetarian meal for a good price. The eggplant pita is also delicious. The menu is a bit confusing to figure out because the key info on the left is blocked by the drink fridge. Basically you choose your main filling in the top row, the type of packing (pita/salad/plate) in the lower rows. It's not just pita/salad/plate, they also each have their own variations. Maybe I'm the only one but I'm never sure exactly what I've ordered until it arrives... They have soup in the winter but you have to get there early before it runs out. They offer Turkish coffee but it's really what Israelis call (Turkish coffee mixed with hot water and served in a glass, not "cooked" in an ibrik). They also have a wide selection of flavored kombucha. There's WiFi but you have to ask for the password, it's not posted anywhere. That just means more interaction with the friendly employees! Gender neutral restroom is up a few stairs, so it's not accessible. They open up the front in the summer so you can sit outside/inside, and the outdoor furniture stays there through the winter, so you can enjoy those short sunny days. read more

The place was shockingly empty for a Saturday afternoon but, I quickly realized that they have a relatively busy takeaway situation. Good for them. I got the falafel plate ($15), which comes with either white or whole wheat pita. My partner got the tuna sandwich ($9) with an added hardboiled egg (+$1). We also got an order of fries ($5) to share. You order/pay at the counter and they bring the food out to your table. All the utensils and water are self service. The cups for water are kind of laughable. They're literally the size of the cups you get at the dentist to rinse your mouth with. I guess that's one way to try to get patrons to buy a drink instead of drinking the free water. The food comes out very quickly. I asked for hot sauce but the green herb container that they claimed was their hot sauce was barely spicy. It had a nice flavor but I doubt I'd ever refer to it as a hot sauce condiment. The falafel was delicious and so was the accompanying hummus. The tahini was watery and seemed out of a jar. The Israeli salad and the cabbage salad it comes with could have used a bit more seasoning but overall, good enough for a healthy side. I'd try this place again. A majority of The people getting takeaway were getting chicken schnitzel and chicken shawarma so those are next on my list to try. If you live in the Kensington/Windsor Terrace area, this is definitely a good place to try for a casual, no frills meal. read more

But their pitas are packed real inconsistently so the experience truly varies: Sometimes they are packed so weirdly it isn't that easy to enjoy and you end up with mostly a bland beet salad as your majority with falafel on the bottom of the pita. (And also some on your clothes). Other times it's better balanced and actually possible to eat, you are getting the right combo of flavors in your bites. Ever since I moved to the area I've been stopping by this sweet little joint. It's a great place to stop in for a quick tea, coffee or one of their many fresh smoothies. If you're looking for more, you could sit down for a meal. They serve it all from breakfast to dessert. Make sure to order and pay first. You'll also need to get and refill your own water glasses if you're sitting at a table. After that, your work is done. Now all you need to do is enjoy. If you don't know what to order, don't just pick one thing. Get one of each. Or even 2 of each. No one is judging you. You could get anything on this menu and you will not be disappointed. The sweet potato falafels are a unique part of their menu and I usually end up ordering the sweet potato falafel platter which comes with Israeli salad, fresh red cabbage slaw, pickles, heavenly creamy hummus, tahini, and zhoug. Have taken out from here before and enjoyed the food; but not yesterday. Never tried their Hummous before so ordered a mushroom hummous. Turned out to be disgusting!! Never had sauteed (or fried) onions in hummous until Batata's. They changed the taste of the dish for worse. Long, stringy sweet onion pieces couldn't be removed as much of the hummous would be trashed with them. Additionally, so much grease in the dish, and not olive oil like it should be. All the grease from frying the mushrooms & onions were in the hummous. Wound up trashing most of my lunch. After this experience doubt I'll go back to Batata again. Better places nearby for good hummous. Also realized the unhealthy oils being used in what should be healthy food. Bye bye Batata! read more

I've been going to this restaurant for years and the food is always very good! This time, however, my order was prepared extremely late. The cashier was rude and clearly more accommodating and friendly to the "other" guests - many of whom placed orders after mine was supposed to be done and ready for pickup! As a result, everyone else got their food first, and my order was literally skipped over until I walked up and awkwardly stood closer to the register, which I only did after asking the cashier if my order was ready twice before. Ultimately, the cashier finally handed me my order approximately 40 minutes after the listed pickup time. Suggestion: perhaps coordinate some implicit bias training for your restaurant staff so they can learn to treat everyone equally and with respect. I'd rate Batata four and a half stars. We had a late dinner here. The atmosphere was quiet and casual. Only a few other patrons and some folks making pickups. The seating was plenty spacious. We ordered a chicken shawarma sandwich and sweet potato falafel. I would recommend both! The shawarma sandwich was perfect. We opted for the one with yogurt sauce. Plenty meat on the sandwich. The falafel were made with a combination of sweet potatoes and chickpeas. They were certainly unique. We also had some regular falafel with them. All were crispy and flavorful. Not a bit dry either. We had the falafel platter which came with carrot salad, Israeli salad, cabbage, hummus, and tahini sauce. After we finished our meal, we stuck around and played a little backgammon. A very hipster-ish middle eastern eatery that's menu has gotten better and better over time. I remember when I first moved to the Kensington/Windsor Terrace this place had one menu board with some breakfast and lunch options. Then they started adding Kombucha and more deserts a few months ago and now as it currently stands they have like 3 additional boards to select from! The variety of stuff you can get here feels like it really jumped up and they have some unique cool stuff like Kombucha on tap. They even have a kids menu now which I can see from the parents in the place really enjoy it. It caters to a more local, middle class crowd as the food is not 100% authentic and the food options are a little pricey. However if you can afford it this place can grow on you. It is a nice place to try something different with a menu that includes schnitzel and shwarma. The place has good seating and is never crowded. The music is nice and the staff is very friendly. I've had food from here on two different occasions. Recently I placed a Yelp order and we had our first order at the restaurant. My wife is Yemeni so she wanted to give this spot a shot considering it's Yemenite servings. The first time we ordered it was for breakfast. The food was good but not much spices. I had the malawach (which is basically Yemeni Khubz) and scramblers eggs; the breakfast was very filling and the bread was crunchy. I liked it. The second time we had the shawarma sandwich and it was very filling. They were generous with the proportions but I wish they added a bit more spices; it kind of tasted plain. A four star because when went to eat at Batata the chef didn't have her hair covered and her hair was all over the place. We saw this after we ordered, it wasn't a pleasant look. read more

This place is off the beaten path and it's definitely a local spot. I see lots of people hanging out with their laptops and flip flops, very hipster vibe. Schnitzel & Waffle - The waffle was so delicious, that was the first thing we devoured. The chicken was too bland and dry. Chicken Shawarma plate - tasted as good as it smelled but not a lot of chicken (according to my friend) Goat cheese and honey malawach - never had a malawach but it reminds me of roti and I loved it. I thought the goat cheese was a bit much and too gamey. Labane & Zaatar eggplant sandwich - looks like a massive stuffed pita and very messy to eat but it was very good. Sweet potato fries - a miss for me. Too soggy and burnt for my taste. I also got a mint lemonade which was ok. Tasted like fresh lemonade, not a lot of sugar, no mint taste at all.
