Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich and Sweet Potato Falafel Sandwich
Anna S.

Wow! I've never had sweet potato falafel but it might be my new obsession now that I've been introduced to it. It's got a more earthy and sweet taste than the regular chickpea falafels. We got: Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich 10/10 Sweet Potato Falafel Sandwich 10/10 I'm actually quite surprised as I've always thought Falafel Tanami would be my favorite falafel sandwich place but this place is pretty comparable. Their sandwiches have different fillings and they have more options here. They are very generous with the portion size and definitely fill up the sandwich even for a take out order. I love the beets in the sweet potato falafel. If you want meat the chicken schnitzel is delicious and unique option. Definitely give their sweet potato falafel a try!

Israeli food is one of my favorites-- the fresh salads and seared proteins all seasoned to perfection with spices and high quality olive oil are the stuff of gods. It's one of the cuisines correlated with the longest life span so maybe there really is something to it and if eating falafel is treating my body like a temple then give me a lifetime supply of it. This is a casual cafe where you order and pay at the register and bus your own table. There's plenty of indoor seating but it was a nice day so we sat at one of their outdoor tables, which was great for people watching along busy Fort Hamilton Parkway. I always have high hopes for falafel but good falafel where not only is it crispy, the interior is full of good flavor. Thankfully Batata's was of the good variety, each bite pairing deliciously with their tahini and hot sauce. The schnitzel and waffle was a great take on a chicken and waffle, with pillowy, fresh waffles and syrup. They have some amazing looking breakfast sandwiches, salads, and sandwiches so I'm bound to find myself here again soon.

The waffle was great, as was the honey butter. The chicken schnitzel was the thinnest chicken I have ever encountered. No chicken flavor at all. It was like I was eating breading. I'd rather have just ordered the waffle alone. The cashier was super sweet though!

I love this place! We been going there for years and never disappoint. We love falafel plates and the favorite is eggplant zatar!! And I think the service is excellent always!!! Thank you guys for a unique great place in the neighborhood

Small quaint Israeli cafe good for breakfast and brunch. We ordered a mix of the hummuses, falafel salad, and falafel pitas. All we're tasty and fresh. The falafel pitas did fall apart easily so we just ate them with forks. Service was good, very friendly staff. Food and drinks came out fast, and overall we had a nice brunch.

A good spot for brunch, or to pick up a smoothie. The smoothies were healthy and refreshing, and I had no complaints about the food either. The egg and cheese malawich was definitely the highlight, and we got a plate of hummus which was smooth and flavorful, paired with freshly made pita. The chicken and schnitzel was good, but not my personal favorite as I'm not big on chicken and waffles. Overall- definitely try it out if you're in the area! -Navya J @nyconthetable

Batata is Hebrew/Arabic for sweet potato, so try their signature sweet potato falafel. At $8 for a whole wheat pita (sandwich), it's a satisfying vegetarian meal for a good price. The eggplant pita is also delicious. The menu is a bit confusing to figure out because the key info on the left is blocked by the drink fridge. Basically you choose your main filling in the top row, the type of packing (pita/salad/plate) in the lower rows. It's not just pita/salad/plate, they also each have their own variations. Maybe I'm the only one but I'm never sure exactly what I've ordered until it arrives... They have soup in the winter but you have to get there early before it runs out. They offer Turkish coffee but it's really what Israelis call (Turkish coffee mixed with hot water and served in a glass, not "cooked" in an ibrik). They also have a wide selection of flavored kombucha. There's WiFi but you have to ask for the password, it's not posted anywhere. That just means more interaction with the friendly employees! Gender neutral restroom is up a few stairs, so it's not accessible. They open up the front in the summer so you can sit outside/inside, and the outdoor furniture stays there through the winter, so you can enjoy those short sunny days.

Falafel Plate ($15) with whole wheat pita and an order of french fries ($5)

Came here for a quick lunch on a Saturday afternoon. They had 2 tables available for outdoor dining. The place was shockingly empty for a Saturday afternoon but, I quickly realized that they have a relatively busy takeaway situation. Good for them. I got the falafel plate ($15), which comes with either white or whole wheat pita. My partner got the tuna sandwich ($9) with an added hardboiled egg (+$1). We also got an order of fries ($5) to share. You order/pay at the counter and they bring the food out to your table. All the utensils and water are self service. The cups for water are kind of laughable. They're literally the size of the cups you get at the dentist to rinse your mouth with. I guess that's one way to try to get patrons to buy a drink instead of drinking the free water. The food comes out very quickly. I asked for hot sauce but the green herb container that they claimed was their hot sauce was barely spicy. It had a nice flavor but I doubt I'd ever refer to it as a hot sauce condiment. The falafel was delicious and so was the accompanying hummus. The tahini was watery and seemed out of a jar. The Israeli salad and the cabbage salad it comes with could have used a bit more seasoning but overall, good enough for a healthy side. I'd try this place again. A majority of The people getting takeaway were getting chicken schnitzel and chicken shawarma so those are next on my list to try. If you live in the Kensington/Windsor Terrace area, this is definitely a good place to try for a casual, no frills meal.

batata OVERALL: 8.9/10 5 stars on yelp. The food is amazing. Not a single bad dish. Although I would have liked the shepherd salad to be done a little better. FOOD: 8.9/10 Chicken coconut waffles, shepherd salad, falafel on a plate, and some like egg and cheese on their type of panini. The chicken and waffles came with a yummy chili honey butter which was very unique. The waffle itself was made with coconut, VERY appetizing and delicious. The falafel on a plate was well balanced and the pita with everything on it was simply amazing. The shepherd salad could be more sour and seasoned. SERVICE: self service place which is really weird. They didn't have a utensil stand on every table so what am I supposed to do.. If the next time I go back there's no utensils on every table I'm dropping the review. CLEANLINESS: 10/10 Clean ATMOSPHERE: 10/10 Cool simple place WILL I COME BACK? Yes, food was delicious. #mediterranean #fun #food #nofilter

The falafel sandwich was messy. It wasn't what I expected it to be. It was not worth the price.

Ask the Community - Batata

Is Batata kosher?

No. They serve meat and dairy together and I don't imagine products are hechshered. However, they do have several good vegetarian/vegan/dairy options.

As I walk in, the friendly lady behind the counter asks me what I would like. I respond: A cappuccino please. Then, I carefully inquire further for what baked goods are available with a smile. In her reply, she tells me sadly that there is only croissants. So not being picky, I tell her: Great, I'll have one. Next, she brings me a cappuccino on a glass saucer and my croissant on a dish. Also, there are numerous napkins, sugar, long stemmed spoon given to me as well. I felt like a sports lounge vibe with many tables and chairs (probably enough to seat 35 people at least). I found the service impolite and dismissive. And the coffee pod, yes a COFFEE POD AT A CAFÉ is outrageous. Well aside from me noticing a bit to late to stop the process I watched her make it and seen the liquid coming out beige at best. I actually thought she was running a cleaning of the machine, because the color just wasn't the color even a blond roast would be. I mentioned it looked light, to which she replied it's not light it's black coffee it's dark. Well I took my sip, left a dollar tip and left the coffee on the counter. With the myriad of cafes in Brooklyn these days, I would have been better with mud from the bodega.

I ordered the Journey to Baku salad, the Turkish bread, and the Guru Khingal. The salad needed a pinch of salt, but there was a shaker on the table and with that addition, it was a decent refreshing appetizer. It's sort of a spread so I would recommend ordering some bread to eat with it. The bread came out steaming hot and smelling amazing. It was soft and fluffy on the inside and delicious. I took the extra home and ate it all immediately when I got there. Delicious bread. The Guru Khingal is honestly one of the best things I've ever eaten in New York City. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, as I have never eaten this type of food before. The tender, handcut pasta seems to be layered with flavorful lamb fat like the most decadent possible buttered noodles and the ground lamb topping is rich and perfectly seasoned. The yogurt sauce gives the dish balance. It's a fairly large portion that could easily be shared between two. I highly recommend this spot, the glowing reviews are not exaggerating at all. I often like to try new and unusual restaurants, and sometimes I enjoy them mostly for the novelty. That was not the case at Village Cafe. My meal here was delicious and I am eager to return, even with the 75 minute commute from north Brooklyn.

Food: (4/5) - rated New York Times top 100 Best Restaurants in New York City in 2025 Every dish came with a small cup of sour cream / Tzatziki based sauce that went with every dish. This was a must and this was mastered very well. Kutaby with chicken and lamb (4/5) - we ordered one each but the lamb was far superior than the chicken. Guru Hingal (4/5) - served in a warmed bowl with a lid in a bed of soft pasta and minced lamb. The pasta reminded me of chow fun (Chinese rice flat noodles) and then some seasoned minced lamb. While overall there were flavors in there, it was still lacked flavors and required to be drowned in the Tzatziki sauces or perhaps a order of table hot sauce. Finally we got the Lamb Lulya Kebab (5/5): this was by far the best dish of the meal! The meat was so wonderfully seasoned throughout, juicy, and complemented well with the rice, onions, and tomato based dip. The wraps themselves were way too small to enjoy using hands so we definitely reconstructed on our plates and attempts with our hands.
