Red Velvet, red velvet, red velvet. With icing? Absolutely! Best red velvet I've had. Blueberry solid but not as good as Schneider's blueberry in Westerville ;-). Long John enjoyed by my daughter. The money for me is absolutely the iced red velvet and my son agrees. Parking can be a pain but patience will be rewarded. It can be crowded at times but again, patience. Open 24 hours. I could just end the review there, but I won't. I love Buckeye Donuts. Call me a fanboy. My first memories are dear to me. Something like this: It's 4am, and I'd been cramming for that engineering midterm all night. I'm hungry, and need quick food to continue. Walk across High St, and smell fresh donuts frying. I take a bite, and suddenly I'm rejuvenated. I eat some cheesy fries and listen to the homeless guy talk about the Buckeyes football season. I give him two bucks-everyone deserves these donuts. I ace my midterm. Time for another bacon maple. This place is tiny, often jam-packed, sometimes uncomfortably busy, but always delicious. I love their seasonal cake donuts, and they have surprisingly good gyros. Don't forget to try a breakfast sandwich. Even though I'm not at OSU anymore, I still make a pilgrimage once in a while. My laptop had done all my work for me. I stopped in here on National Doughnut Day, but they did not seem to be celebrating the occasion. That is, I did not see any signs about it or hear anyone mention the holiday. But that's okay, because the only thing that you need to celebrate National Doughnut Day is access to fresh, tasty doughnuts, and Buckeye has 'em in spades. My first mission was to acquire an apple fritter. I am a connoisseur of these delightful pastries, and Buckeye's version is very good but not quite the best. My only complaints are that is was too soft and moist--almost gooey in some spots--and that it was too sweet by about 10%. Otherwise, it contained plenty of apple chunks and presented a nice cinnamon flavor, as well as some other spice that I couldn't identify. Maybe clove or allspice? Interesting and effective in any case. Overall, it was a good package which I will seek out again the next time that I am in town. My secondary mission was to bring back a dozen for the family. (Nobody ever goes into a doughtnut shop and walks out with just one, right? How sad that would be.) So I was pleased to try a few other varieties. The coconut was my favorite (A-), and I would grade the cinnamon powdered and devil's cake at B+. Clearly, you can't go wrong with whatever your favorite doughnut happens to be. read more

I am relieved to finally break the chains of the Dunkin Donuts monopoly in Chicago. Freedom has never tasted this good! Let me explain. You would think such a metropolitan city patrolled by Chicago's finest would have great donut havens throughout the city. The problem is the most honored donut shops are all the way in the south part of the city, and usually there is no reason for me to drive that far unless I'm leaving Illinois. I went to Buckeye Donuts tonight after class to grab some carryout. I was excited that they had a vegetarian gyro and I had been wanting to try it for awhile. I also ordered a buckeye donut, which was a chocolate covered glazed donut with real peanut butter (not frosting) in the center. The "gyro" disappointed me because I thought there was going to be seitan or something instead of lamb, but when I got it, I was surprised to find out that it was cold. The sandwich was "just" vegetables, feta and dressing on a pita. Don't get me wrong, it was good. I just don't think it should be called a gyro. The donut, though, was awesome! If the scene at Buckeye Donuts isn't the epitome of the self-proclaimed "alternative" crowd at Ohio State University, then me and the hundreds of people that have called this place home for countless years have been living a lie. From fresh donuts to coffee to the best gyro combos on High Street, Buckeye Donuts has it all. Your reasons for going here may vary from day to day, but luckily everything that's offered here, right down to the surly regulars that can be found whiling away their day here around the clock, is top of the line. The donuts are baked fresh almost hourly, come in around 30 different varieties, and are cheap enough to keep you coming back more than your body would like you to. As for the other baked goods, I've always had good experiences with the muffins and cookies as well. Buckeye Donuts quickly became one of my favorite places to stop for a quick lunch as well. The gyro combos, which come in a variety of options starting at $5, offer a ton of great food for an unbeatable price. I don't know how many times I ambled up in this direction with Wendy's in mind only to get a gyro and fries combo at the 'Donut instead. The fries can be overboard with the seasoning at times, but that's nothing a dab of ketchup can't counteract. And like I said, no other takeout place in Columbus can touch the gyros here. They come bursting with delicious lamb meat and topped with a cool cucumber sauce and the freshest cuts of lettuce and tomato that you'll ever find. Dousing them in hot sauce is rarely a necessity to get maximum flavor out of this dish, but it's always an option if you're interested. A lot of people talk about the pseudo-intellectual banter that's always being perpetuated by the laptop-wielding regulars that vegetate on a stool with the same cup of coffee for hours. I've had many debates about politics and music here, and for the most part it's always been light-hearted and in good taste. I've never run in to a crowd that isn't content with agreeing to disagree on certain issues, the most prominent being the legacy of The Beatles for whatever reason. that might have something to do with the corresponding posters that decorate the walls., I suppose. The inside of Buckeye Donuts is small, but the majority of their business comes from takeout orders so it's rarely hard to find a spot in the corner to keep to yourself while you dig in. A ragtag collection of vinyl chairs outdoors provide additional seating and room for the smokers to sit and banter idly until they think of something better to do. A late night trip to Buckeye Donuts is essential to the OSU experience for everyone, and I can't think of a single time of day that a quick stop for even a donut or a coffee is unmerited. I went in the morning to grab a sausage egg and cheese on a croissant sandwich. You're given the choice of croissant, bagel or Texas toast. The sandwich was delicious and it was only $3.50! It came out nice and hot. The tater tots were also extremely good. They weren't super greasy or oily and were perfectly crunchy. Best part? It was only $1.50 for a decent sized portion. The store it's not that big but it always crowded during weekend. You'll get overwhelmed by the amount of peanut butter/donut ratio you got on your donut. It's heaven! The rest of the donuts I would personally say just okay, they're average. The regular french fries, I had them once. It's a good amount of portion but nothing special. I mean, what else you expect from french fries? They're just fries.. The breakfast sandwich tho. Contrary to the name, they serve much more than donuts, and their menu consists of an all-day diner breakfast and Greek dinner entrees. I tried their traditional gyro, which was lamb meat served with Tzatziki, onion, tomatoes and lettuce. It was good, but not spectacular. There was a fair serving of meat, and the gyro combo came with a large helping of fries and soda (though their soda machine was broken). For dessert, I tried the Buckeye donut and a fresh chocolate eclair. The Buckeye was alright, just a chocolate donut filled with peanut butter. Meh. I've never had Buckeye Donuts before but students swear by it. My wife "really wanted a donut" so we stopped since it was across the street from my class. The location is convenient but parking is a bummer (this kind of applies to most places in this location, however). I sat outside in the car so I didn't get any inside sight. She ordered a Buckeye donut, a Boston cream and a powdered. Overall, the Boston cream was disappointing in that I had already taken 3 bites before any cream. The fondant was fairly thick and could be scaled down a few. My wife said that she was disappointed. She goes there all the time. The filled donuts were flat and the donuts overall felt old and hard. There was no customer-service feel. I'd probably not go back. I feel that they weren't much better than Dunkin'. read more
