i tried the iced strawberry matcha latte with oat milk, no sugar and no toppings. the drink came with noticeable chunks of strawberry puree at the bottom, pretty with its green, white and red layers, which mixed in easily and tasted closer to strawberry jam than fresh fruit. it added a soft, natural sweetness and tartness that balanced the drink without overpowering it. the matcha itself was subtle and smooth but didn't have the depth or brightness of higher quality matcha, so while it was enjoyable, it wasn't a standout.
cha yuan focuses on premium teas sourced from taiwan and avoids powdered milks and syrups, making it a healthier choice than many other bubble tea shops. prices are reasonable, especially for yaletown, and the shop works well as a low key stop for a drink and a bubble waffle while wandering the area. they offer eight flavors of bubble waffles, a wide range of drinks including milk tea, fruit tea, smashed lime, fruit slush, brewed tea, latte slush, cheese foam, smoothies, the bubbly tea series, matcha, tea lattes, specialty hot drinks, and a variety of toppings.
for extra fun, there's a pokémon vending machine ($1 per play), and if you're a collector, they will even buy your pokémon cards. the shop also has an all day special (limited time only) of taiwanese minced pork on rice for $9.99.
overall, cha yuan isn't a destination for matcha purists, but it's a pleasant, clean, and calm spot to grab a drink, enjoy a bubble waffle, and soak in the yaletown vibe.
