The guy behind the counter (I'm assuming Australian?) greeted us and showed us the menu items. The pies are kept in warming ovens behind the counter. I ordered the ground beef pie and my boyfriend ordered the chunky beef pie. He suggested we eat them with ketchup (my favorite condiment) and with our hands. He graciously gave us two small mashed potatoes also. I tried eating them with my hands. Too messy. The ground beef pie is A+. The crust is incredibly flaky. The meat is seasoned and sitting in some kind of gravy sauce. The ketchup only enhanced the flavors of the pie. The chunky beef pie was also delicious, but not nearly as much as the ground beef. It had chunks of tender beef and a thick sauce also. The mashed potatoes were buttery beyond belief. I can't wait to come back and get another pie. It's the perfect size for one person. MEAT PIE GOODNESS! YES YES YAAAAAAAAAAAASSSS!! Yes, meat pies. They're good. You should go get one. Here's the scoop: park at the lot one block away ($6 flat rate on weekends, holler!). Find the location (so it's just down an alley on Los Angeles St.--that sounds weird, but you'll see what I mean. Just keep walking past the Pizza Hut and you'll see the sign. We circled to find it.). The restaurant itself has a cute, cozy interior--counter seating and a few tables outside. Very clean. Super friendly employees who will actually have a conversation with you past recommendations and payment. I dig. I opted for a ground beef pie and a custard tart. The pie was fantastic--great flaky crust outside, delicious seasoned beef inside. Served so hot that I burned the roof of my mouth at least three different times. Worth it. Custard tart was not sweet and that's exactly how I like it. The consistency was perfect. The price was very good as well. They have vegan options! Rejoice, plant-eaters! I actually was really tempted to get some pies to go, but I was so ridiculously full I couldn't justify getting more. Sadness. The alley tucks the place away from the surrounding downtown area, which I would nicely describe as "sketchy" during the day and "uncomfortable" at night. This place is a bit of a walk from the standard business district. It's hidden in an alley, a charming one, and has a lovely courtyard eating area in the back. The shop is small and is a working bakery, which is great. The owner/employees are friendly and it looks like it gets a good amount of business. We had a chicken bacon mushroom pie and a sausage roll. The absolute best was the sausage roll. The sausage filling is delicious and the flaky crust is excellent and slightly spiced I think. Not to discredit the chicken pie at all, which was also very good, and I would love to try some additional varieties. I've been trying some of the takeout food places in my West L.A / Cheviot Hills neighborhood. I went on Yelp and typed in Chicken Pot Pie. The Bronzed Aussie came up along with Stalking Horse Brewery, The Irish Times and a few others as well. I ordered 3, 5-inch pies; Pepper Steak, Rosemary Roasted Lamb and a Chicken-Bacon-Mushroom pie. I also ordered two Spinach & Feta Rolls and two Sausage Rolls. These are not your normal American pot pies but a flatter version with an incredible flaky crust. The household consensus was that the absolute winner was the chicken-bacon-mushroom. Although I throughly enjoyed the other pies as well. The meat pie was just a touch too salty for me. I also liked the spinach and feta roll (could have used a bit more feta) and the sausage roll was good as well. I would come back again. Came by Bronzed Aussie on Saturday late afternoon around 5:45 pm with my husband. We parked off of Los Angeles (metered parking) and walked down an alley way (this place is hard to find). This place has limited seating (There is also limited seating outside as well in case you want to dine with your four legged friend). When we walked in, we were immediately greeted by the woman behind the counter. Being that this was our first time here, we took a while to decide what we wanted. The woman told us that the lamb and ground beef are the best pies. I wish the menu had photos instead of just being written on a thin piece of paper because I wanted to know what was a Lamington. I assumed it was a dessert since it was written in the same section as the apple and blueberry pie. I asked the woman and she said it is a cake with chocolate and coconut on it. Well after she answered my question, we decided to order: Lamb Pie, $8.90 including tax- This pie was really good. The flavor of the lamb was well seasoned and really satisfied our taste buds. The lamb was tender and an easy chew. The flakiness of the crust was rather nice. The only downside of this pie was the size. I wished it was a little bigger, especially for the price. Vegan Tofu Curry, $7.90 including tax- I decided to order this even though I am not vegan, nor vegetarian (but am a fan of tofu and curry). This pie was really good as the curry flavors were pronounced. But glad that it was not spicy at all (as I am not a fan of spicy food). Usually a place that is not know for vegetarian or vegan offerings usually do not do a good job, but this was delicious. I would definitely order this again. Apple Pie, $3.50 including tax- This apple pie was quite small, probably a little less than half the size of the lamb and vegan tofu curry pies we had but was good. The apple filling was sweet and tender. Lamington, $3.50 including tax- This Aussie dessert is a sponge cake that is frosted in chocolate and shredded coconut. I have never heard of this dessert before so decided to get it. I liked this cake but didn't find it to be memorable. Also wished the size was larger as well. ------------------------------ (Total= $22.80 including tax) After we ordered, the woman who took our order was able to pull out our pies quickly out of the oven warmer. The apple pie and lamington was pulled out of the chilled display case (wished the apple pie was served warm). It was nice that we did not have to wait long for our food and glad that the food was not dry even though it may have been sitting in the warmer all day (?). There is free WiFi here (yummypies) that was pretty fast. Not sure if there is a public restroom. This place is a no frills place where you get your own napkins, utensils and water. You can purchase frozen pies as well to take home and try at another time (5 pies for $32.70, prior to tax). Some closing thoughts: This place is good but a bit pricey. I have had some really good meat pies (in Orange County) that were pretty filling and much cheaper than this place. But if I was in the area, I would consider coming in to pick up some frozen pies to bring home. read more

From the sheer volume of good reviews, I knew my fellow Yelpers were onto something! I ordered the following: *Veggie Brekkie: This was more like a huge quiche with potato, tomato, spinach, onion & mushroom. Hearty and delicious with lots of stuffin' *Thai Chicken (Chicken breast in a spicy, fresh green curry, green pepper, cilantro, lime & coconut milk): I loved this! The green curry was on point. For those afraid of spice, not really spicy at all but plenty of flavor. Both feature crusts that are delightfully buttery and flakey. Marie Callendar's can't even touch this. These bad boys set me back ~$15 ($7.90 each) but they're hefty and can definitely be shared or saved for an addt'l meal! My only complaint is that they have limited hours. I've been meaning to check this place since moving to DTLA. With it popping up on Yelp's 100 best list, I figured I should go before people catch on and lines get too crazy. I can see why they're on the list, this place has legit good meat pies. If you're a no frills meat and potatoes kind of person, then you MUST try this place out. I went with the beef pie and topped it with a sample of their mash potatoes, as recommended by the nice lady who rang me up. The crust is good and flakey, and it was still warm by the time I walked back the half mile to my office. If you're not into meat and you just want some sweets, get their tiny apple pie. Who knew a meat pie could taste so GOOD! I could go on and on, but really this is delicious. They are made fresh and given to you nice and hot. Everything about the crust was flaky/buttery/salty. Yum.. Inside was nice and moist. I could have used more meat though.. but the flavor was really good. The espresso that they make is not bitter at all. It really has a fine rich texture and goes down real smooth. I am just amazed at the combination of food and coffee this place offers. I love that the owner, Samantha mentioned that the crust is vegan too. I feel a little less guilty eating the pies since the crust is not buttery. The food overall was delicious! The pies were crisp and flaky and did not feel as heavy. The spinach feta roll was delicious. Out of the 3 pies we tried the peppered steak one was my favorite. The meat was savory and the pepper gave it a nice kick. We also ordered some custard tart and lemingtons, which I learned is a vanilla cake with chocolate syrup and coconut. I loved the custard tart. I've only had a drink and dessert here, haven't sampled the meat pies for which they are known...but what I had was amazingly delicious. I love the flavors in the Australian Chai. Recommend asking for a whiff of you are thinking of getting one. It smells delicious. I had mine iced, but was told I was the first to do that. So, hopefully it tastes as good if you try it hot. After watching an episode of Fung Bros Foods on YouTube featuring this Aussie eatery, my husband insisted on coming in to try out the meat pies I had the Ground beef meat pie for $6.90 and my husband had the roast Lamb for $9.50. The pies came straight out of an convection oven. Happened upon this place during a walking food tour. This place has been on my list for a while now so I'm so happy that we stopped by here. Cute little store located in an alley. It will be quite difficult to find if you don't know the area. We sampled the lamb pie, which was on special today. The crust was so flaky and crispy. We both thought the pies were tasty but weren't blown away by it. The crust/shell was flakey and buttery but did not have a wow-factor. My GF stopped by here after eating at BrunchDTLA (which was amazing) to grab some pies because we have heard so much about them. Not sure what she got since I was waiting outside but we did eat it right away so it wasn't like it was sitting there all day before we ate it. The meat pies were small. Located inside the alley between two large building, this place is hands down the best meat pie place I've ever had in my life. Given that I haven't had a lot of meat pies in my life, I've still got a lot of experience with pies. I can safely say that this place has one of the best pastry I've ever had in my life. The dough of the meat pie was by far one of my favorite. The crust was crispy, it was deliciously chewy yet not thick, and the filling of the beef ground pie was really superb. It's owned by an actually Aussie, and I'm not sure if she does all the cooking, but she definitely looked like she was running the entire show by herself. I live around the corner from Kitchen 1437 and kept wanting to try it. My friend from Australia was telling me about meat pies and it seemed like a great time to try this place. It was fantastic. It's literally a hole-in-the-wall with a nice woman sitting in the window taking orders. There a few tables on the sidewalk and, surprisingly, it's kind of nice. The food was really good. My friend said the meat pies were exactly like her remembered from back home. While a bit expensive, it really seemed worth the money. We will be back! read more

These are some tasty little pies. So yes, a bit small, one is definitely not enough, but two makes a decent snack. A bit pricey as well for a small pie but it's a small operation and they're baked fresh when you order them. I'd suggest ordering ahead so they're ready when you get there. Finally gave this place a try. What a pleasant surprise. We ordered the ground beef mini, ratatouille mini, and chicken bacon mushroom mini. Love them all. The mini is just the right size. So two minis plus a soup on the side is a good sized meal. We reheated the chicken ones in the oven the next day. Just as good. I have tried similar puff pastry meat pies in other places. But always feel cheated because there is always a lot of pastry and little meat filling. But the ones from Bronzed Aussie do not skim on the filling. The amount of pastry and filling is just right. You know what's better than strolling through downtown early on a weekday and seeing a sign that says "Fresh vegan pies!"? I'll tell you what's better: going inside the shop, snagging a fresh baked vegan tofu curry potpie, getting into work while it's still hot, and finding out that it tastes friggen amazing. I was walking to my tailor down the street and saw the Bronzed Aussie sign out on the sidewalk. "Fresh vegan pie for breakfast? Don't mind if I do." When I finally dug into that flaky tofu curry goodness I went into beast mode and devoured the thing in probably about 90 seconds. Considered the national dish of Australia, Australian meat pies feature puff pastry, diced or minced meat and gravy. They're really meaty, hefty pies (that is, mostly filled with meat) though Bronzed Aussie has some veggie versions including tofu curry. They had 8 kinds of pie. You can get the pies hot or frozen (the frozen ones are cheaper). They also have sausage rolls, feta & spinach rolls and some sweet treats like lamingtons, muffins, cookies and caramel slices. The ladies behind the counter have lovely Aussie accents. * Lamb rosemary & garlic pie: Braised lamb in a Madiera sauce with rosemary and garlic in a thin, flaky, golden puff pastry shell. The sauce/gravy was savory and not too salty, the rosemary complemented the sauce without being overwhelming. The peas and carrots looked so tiny next to all those chunks of lamb. The problem was the lamb...it was dry. The interior of the pie was dry...there was little gravy. * Pepper steak pie: Braised pepper steak in a rich meaty gravy. I enjoyed the flavor but the beef wasn't tender. I think it was all beef with a bit of potato. I thought it could use more gravy and more veggies though that might not be the Aussie way. There's very limited seating inside the shop. Also the entrance is in the alley, not on Los Angeles Street. I wouldn't mind more veggies in my pie and more gravy though that might not be the Australian way. Forget "shrimp in the barbie" the real deal is "meat pie in your mouth." I ducked in today in my desire to try a new place for a quick lunch. I'm so glad I did. The owner, Samantha, was delightful. She greeted every customer with a cheerful "G'day!" and made coffees and doled out pies. I started with the original ground beef pie. It was outstanding! So much so that I wasn't even hungry and ordered the lamb just to give it a try. The meat is flavorful and well seasoned and the crust is flakey and delicious - and vegan/kosher to boot! The Aussie way is to eat it like a sandwich, with both hands, I opted for the American way with a fork, however I wanted to opt for putting my whole face, pie eating style, all up in that thing. There are desserts I will be trying soon, and they even sell frozen pies to heat and devour at home! I can't imagine anyone not loving this place. It's the perfect spot for a delicious hearty meal - especially on a day you are craving comfort food that makes you feel great. I finally did it. I had been hearing about Bronzed Aussie for quite some time. Having lived in Australia for a year, people thought I 'must' try this place to compare. So I went today to meet with a friend who needed to fill me in on her Euro travels. The place is really tiny but no one was really there so it was a great place to catch up. We tried the Beef Chunk Pie and the Thai Chicken Pie. We were told by a couple people to put ketchup on the beef one. I didn't want to because I thought it would mask the flavors. When I bit into the pie I was underwhelmed sadly :(. The texture was great but the flavor was so subtle. I understood why they were telling us to put ketchup on it. So I ended up drowning mine in ketchup the way the others all do. The Thai Chicken was also underwhelming sadly. The reason I gave 3 stars is because they do an outstanding job with their coffee. I'll give them that! Would I go back? Probably not. I had to pay $7 for parking which was almost the cost of a pie! The total for 2 pies and one iced coffee was $22 so it's decently priced, but maybe not so much when it comes to pies. Not really sure how much a pie elsewhere would set you back. read more

And of all places, to find this shop downtown run by Aussies :) :) :) The staff is extremely helpful, personable, and informative. They really go out of their ways to make sure the customer is satisfied. Plus you can really see them busting their tails to make this run perfect. That alone will get my continuous business. They have a really small menu but ironically it's not lacking. It's jam packed with flavor From the coffee and pastries to the meat pies and rolls. My pick of the day was the pepper steak meat pie and I'm sooo glad I did. Lol the owner even noticed that the pie didn't stand a chance. It was literally gone in 3 minutes. The flavoring of the meat is just amazing. And it's cooked to perfection. The meat, not too moist and not too dry. The pie crust crisp and flaky. With the peppered steak pie be sure to add ketchup. It makes it THAT much better. Next time I'm going for the Thai Curry Chicken Pie. They have plenty of seating outside. Inside not that much. You'll be squeezed like sardines especially if it's busy. A FIVE, because it is the ONLY place in LA that you can get authentic Australian and New Zealand style savoury MEAT PIES. Also sells Sausage Rolls, Lamingtons, Custard Tarts etc. PLUS if you want a FLAT WHITE coffee ( Kiwis and Aussies coffee of choice, also popular in rhe UK at Costa and Starbucks) they make them here also. I had a Mince (ground beef) Pie, and it was delicious. Pastry was flakey and had the right texture, meat was well seasoned. Just like at home!! Took another one home plus a couple of Sausage Rolls and one of the best Lamingtons I have ever tasted. Not a very large space, counter seating against the window, and outdoor seating available next door. Free WiFi. I hope more Americans get to find this place and get to love meat pies as we Kiwis and Aussies do. If you want a real KIWI style mince and cheese pie Samantha will do it for you.
