I'd always wanted to try Broken Spanish but could never make it to downtown. So excited to see that they opened an outpost on the Westside! Convinced my family to bring me here for brunch to celebrate my birthday (kiddo is not generally a fan of Mexican food, so the brunch menu looked much more accessible for her). Lots of outdoor patio seating, though at one point when the sun peeked out we had to ask someone to move an umbrella so we could get a little shade. The food was fantastic, and everybody was very happy with their dishes. Child and I both ordered the ponche, which she described as a fruity horchata. We loved it. Hubby didn't. Child ordered the tres leches French toast, which she zeroed in on as soon as she read the menu, even before it was enthusiastically recommended by our server. It was amazing - so soft you didn't need a knife to cut it. Even my husband who hates goat cheese was a fan (there was just a hint of it in the caramel). I got the chicharron hash, which was beautifully presented in a small skillet - the perfect portion for me since I wasn't overly hungry. Kiddo stole a good portion of it. The potatoes were perfectly crispy and the crispy pork belly was perfection. Hubby ordered the weenie & eggs, which also had the endorsement of our server, and it was delicious as well. The sauce with the sausage over the eggs was perfection. We also ordered a side of bacon and it was nice and smoky. Parking was easy for us but could be challenging. We had an 11 o'clock reservation so arrived before the restaurant opened and just parked in the lot (no valet for brunch). There weren't many spots, though, so it filled up quickly. 4.5 stars! Went for happy hour around 5 on a Friday and there was plenty of space at the bar. They have valet, and there's street parking if you don't mind walking a few blocks. We tried the HH enchiladas, quesadilla, flauta, and also ordered the ceviche off the regular menu (this was by far our favorite dish, though be warned it's pretty high on the spice factor). The margarita was unique with a fun salty foam, but very weak. I am visiting from out of town and had to stop at Broken Spanish after seeing it on my news feed. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was great, and the service was exceptional. We had a vegetarian in our group, and there were several options available, including two vegan dishes, which we really appreciated. What made our night truly special was the hospitality, especially from the manager, Kelly. She greeted us warmly and graciously accommodated us while I played musical chairs between indoor and outdoor seating. She also took the time to share the story behind the restaurant and its chef while being personable and making us feel completely at home. She even checked in and chatted with us again during dinner. That level of care truly elevated the entire experience and made us feel genuinely appreciated. Now, the food! Some of the dishes are spicy but worth the sweat afterward. If you're sensitive to spice, be sure to ask your server for guidance. My favorite dish was the enchiladas, although I do wish they came with a side. For dessert, we had the chocolate dessert, which I loved because it wasn't overly sweet. The tres leches looked incredible, but we were too full, so we'll have to save it for our next visit. We visited Broken Spanish Comedor for a weekend double date and enjoyed our experience. The restaurant serves a modern Mexican repertoire in the rustic former A-Frame building. The atmosphere is relaxed with high vaulted ceilings, whitewashed boards, and low lighting, reminiscent of an island setting. For drinks, we all had the Destilando Amor, a passionfruit mezcal cocktail that was nicely balanced and not too smoky. We also tried the ponche, a non-alcoholic mixed drink with a licorice undercurrent that pleasantly surprised us, as none of us are big fans of black licorice. When it came to food, the small dishes and sides definitely stole the show. The aguachile had a nice kick of spice, and the bay scallops were plump and tender. The queso fundido was rich without being too greasy. The refried lentils were comforting, and the flautas were crispy and flavorful. The esquites were also a hit - you can't go wrong with corn, cotija, and aioli. I was a bit disappointed with the main dishes. The trucha was quite salty (and I love salt), and the mole almendrado was lacking the typical depth of earthy chocolatey-ness you would expect in mole. What a charming, cozy restaurant. From the moment we walked in, the warm atmosphere and thoughtfully curated music set the perfect tone for the evening. My favorite dishes were the Refried Lentils and the Chicharron. The lentils were cheesy and unctuous, while the pork had a great contrast between tender meat and crunchy skin. Though the Refried Lentils are typically served as an appetizer, our server suggested we have with our entree as they come with tortillas. This was the right call, as the Chicharron wouldn't have worked without them (and at $60 you shouldn't need to pay separately!). I didn't love the Tamal or Camote (sweet potato) despite a lot of hype. These four dishes were plenty of food for two and I didn't find the portions particularly small. After months of passing by this A-frame building that has housed quite a few restaurants over the last couple of decades, Boyfriend and I decided to make a reservation here, as it always seems quite busy and packed. We could only get a reservation for 5:15 p.m. since it's that popular. As I'm not 80 years old, it felt rather early to be eating dinner, but we took what we could get. Honestly, this "elevated Mexican" restaurant feels like a place that is trying to be too "bougie" and different. I'm not usually one to criticize a menu for having rather limited options; however, there are literally only 5 dishes under each category, and most of them are nothing I've ever heard of before as relates to Mexican cuisine. The front-of-house staff and our server/s were very friendly and efficient. We opted to sit outside on the patio, which is surprisingly cramped and narrow for the restaurant being on such a large lot. It was a breezy and slightly chilly evening, and unfortunately we found the rather loud music not to our liking. In fact it sounded a whole lot like a Zumba playlist (and since I have been a Zumba instructor for nearly 20 years, I know these things). I feel the whole dining experience would have been better accentuated by some soft Spanish guitar instead of the weird mix of reggaeton, merengue and annoying Latin pop, but that's just me. We opted for the guacamole and the scallop aguachile for starters, plus the barbacoa and the chicken enchiladas. The guacamole and aguachile were good and packed quite a bit of heat. We enjoyed the tostadas that accompanied each. The enchiladas were ok, but not special. The barbacoa was tender but very very greasy. The house-made blue corn tortillas were a nice addition and recommended by our server. The meal was diminished somewhat by sitting outside with screaming firetrucks and emergency vehicles zipping by and an extremely annoying car alarm that went on for what seemed like forever, but I understand these things are out of the restaurant's control. It's pricey ($20 for a single glass of rose'), and portions are pretty small. Plus valet parking is very steep at $15, since there's no lot and street parking is nearly impossible to find. Went to Broken Spanish for the first time and had an absolutely wonderful time! Excellent food, ambiance, and service. I've been to the many iterations of restaurants that have been at this location and by far this is the best. Our server Kenneth was friendly and knowledgeable with great recommendations. We ordered the flautas, ceasar salad, sweet potatoes, trout, refried lentils, and homemade tortillas. Everything was excellent but the standout was definitely those sweet potatoes!!! Delicious Mexican food in Culver City! I cam here with a small group of girls for dinner, we made a reservation in advance. We had to wait approx 10 mins or so until we were seated but there was space for us to hang out by the bar area. Really nicely decorated, feels comfortable and inviting. Perfect for a date night out or meeting up with friends. They have an outdoor patio with seating as well, with heat lamps - this is where we sat. We ordered a number of dishes and split everything: -Ceviche: This came with wide & salty tortilla chips. Tasty! I wish there was more in the bowl. -Shishito Peppers: These were delicious. It isn't your standard shishito peppers appetizer, these are coated with pepita seeds and a ponzu sauce. -Albondigas: Duck meatballs in a thick chipotle sauce that resembled mole to me. These have a spicy kick to them! -Camote: Japanese sweet potato. These were lovely, covered in a slightly spicy and creamy sauce. Delicious! -Trucha: Trout. Pretty good but I think the appetizers were better and more memorable. -We also ordered rice, refried lentils (they're topped with cheese btw), and an order of tortillas. The tortillas were blue corn and warm, they tasted fresh, but I wasn't entirely sure what to eat it with since they came after we ate the appetizers. So good we celebrated two birthday in the span of ~2 months! After mourning the closure of its DTLA location and dreaming of the chicharron for many years, we were beyond delighted for Chef Garcia's return of Broken Spanish Comedor to Culver City! We celebrated my birthday in November and the chicharron was as amazing as we remembered. Every dish and cocktail was complex and divine! We found the decor beautiful and not too dark inside. We came back last weekend for my husband's birthday with his parents who visited from NorCal and enjoyed the Dine LA menu this time with a couple add one (the chicharron (obviously) and the refried lentils (another must)). This time we sat outside and the only issue I had was the grass tickling my arm on the patio. Service was excellent both times and we felt well cared for! Those chips were perfect-- crunchy, tasty, and the perfect touch of salty flavor. I loved this! - Tamal en Cazuela: this was such a unique combination of cooking a tamal on a skillet. The tamal is savory and on the spicy side, yet it is exquisite! We shared this dish with my family, but honestly I could eat this all by myself. - Camote: I am not a fan of sweet potato, but this dish really surprised me! I loved it! It includes a mix of salsa matcha butter, adding spice to it, and pork rinds, creating a nice crunchy blend. - Tarta de chocolate: made with Mexican chocolate, this dessert was perfect!! I loved that it's not overwhelmingly sweet, so you can enjoy an entire slice by yourself. - Cebada drink: if you like horchata, then there's a high chance you'll enjoy cebada! I know they're both different drinks but I truly enjoyed a refreshing glass. It's made with toasted cinnamon, piloncillo, and toasted barley. I had the enchiladas as my main dish, but they were just fine, nothing espectacular. I would recommend the dishes I mentioned above instead. Our server was very kind and helpful, explaining every dish. My only complaint-- it was rather odd that she was insistent on us getting dessert because it was my birthday, yet she charged us for it. Usually, for special occasions, many restaurants I've been to offer a complementary birthday dessert. I was not planning to order anything, to be completely honest, since we were planning on having cake at home after the restaurant. However, our server insisted and spoke highly of the tarta de chocolate, so I went for it. The restaurant is spacious and they offer valet parking, too. This place has been on my place for sometime now and when I found out this resturant was participating in Dine LA, I got reservations right away. The servers were AMAZING! They were so nice, prompt, knowledgeable and went above and beyond. The place is charming. I got early reservations so got prime street parking right out front but they did have valet in the lot for $15. It's a little tricky to find parking around there and some of the street are permit only. So make sure to read the signs. Now the drinks! I got the Rebelde to start. I was going back and forth with the Corazone Salvaje (which i ended uo getting after). Both were delicious. The Rebelde did taste like boozy jicama fresca which was how my waitress described it. It was strong, too! The Carazone Salvaje was on the sweeter size but still great. I love guava and prickly pear so it was perfect. The apps: I got the ceviche and omg let me tell you about the carrot-habanero clamato sauce! It was spicy, citrusy and delicious! The Kanpachi is light and the tostadas were perfectly crispy. I also tried the smoked salmon flautas. Ok, the presentation was fabulous! I wasn't sure what to expect, and the first bite was a bit of a surprise. It didn't taste bad but I have never had smoked salmon rolled up in a flauta before so it took me by surprise. Not sure if I'll order it again, but it was good. Main: I got the Rainbow trout and it was swimming in garlic butter. It was very flakey and delicious. I love garlic so it was perfect for me. It doesn't come with anything so I ordered the half size tortillas, and made it into fish tacos. The tortillas as so good. Highly recommend getting those when you go. It was soft, and chewy and it was probably one of the best tortillas I have ever tasted. Dessert: I got the Tres Leche Bundt cake to go and even the presentation in the to go box was impressive! I traveled to Mexico City this spring, and we didn't make it to all the overpriced cheffy spots there, so this felt like the next best thing. This is not street taco territory. This is a chef-driven take on traditional dishes using top notch ingredients, techniques, with a beautiful presentation. I came with my partner and another couple to celebrate 2 of our birthdays. We ordered cocktails and 1 Mexican dark beer and a bunch of the dishes across the menu for sharing. The dishes are small, but mighty. We were concerned we may have ordered too much food, but each plate is only a few bites if you're splitting it with 2-3 people. The lentil app was delicious. The homemade blue nixtamalized tortillas were perfect for scooping up every last drop of sauces. We also tried the mole, the esquites (exquisite!), the ceviche (shareable!) and the flautas. Our cocktails were La Intrusa and the Soy tu Duena (a Mexican take on the negroni) and they were complex and well executed. I'd love to try all of them. I'm also curious to try Sotol by itself (I know I could buy a bottle for $30, but that's a commitment). We ordered both desserts, which were divine and beautiful. Yes, they were small, but at least we didn't feel stuffed. We were close to our neighbors, but you can't blame a restaurant for maximizing the space. The service was excellent. The servers were clearly coached to highlight the ingredients as they presented each dish. I didn't mind. I think they want us to appreciate it, which we did. Our check with tip, tax, and other gratuities was about $120 per couple, so that's closer to $60 per person, not $100 as another reviewer said. Depends on what you order! No need to go crazy to try a bunch of cool things. If you want large portions and cheap prices, there is no shortage of Mexican restaurants and trucks in this big, wondrous city. Since we live nearby, we walked over. Yes, the valet is pricey; I encourage you to bike, take an LA Metro bike, bus, walk, or park at a meter on the street if you don't want to valet. We have so many amazing restaurants all over LA, but how lucky are we to have so many good places in Mar Vista! If you are local, check it out. Broken Spanish is cozy and has a nice patio with heaters (be warned the side that faces the street can get really windy, we were fortunate that we were able to switch to a table closer to the parking lot thanks to the kind staff). The food and drinks are amazing and some dishes have quite the kick. Highlights for us were the roasted sweet potatoes (can be quite spicy), tamale and roasted fish (perfect crispness yet still tender meat). The Comote (sweet potato) was definitely the other highlight. Lastly - loved the Carajillo especially because of the cup it came in! Otherwise the Enchiladas were also a big hit on our table. Came here for the first time the other night. There were 4 of us. We waited to be seated inside (our choice, outside was available). The space is very attractive. Menu offerings looked great, although my personal pet peeve, not limited to this restaurant is the enforced shared plates. I want to decide if I want to share, not have to, but that's the way it is. We got ceviche (very good, just the right amount of spice), duck meatballs (fine), sweet potato (way too spicy/hot - I like things somewhat spicy, but that hurt), lentils w/ tortilla (excellent, flavorful), pork belly (too small a portion for the price. For dessert we spilt the two options, tres leches cake and chocolate (both very good). For a drink, I had the one with mezcal and passion fruit - it was good and packed a punch. Service was attentive. Overall, good experience but not memorable. read more

Nobody provided menus until we asked for them - The food was good BUT the portions were ridiculously small - not aligned with the prices. - The drinks were ok - also pricey The Ugly - Establishment tacks on a 4% "Healthy LA" employee wellness fee to your bill. Enjoyed a late brunch here with friends. There was a decent selection of items and both alcoholic and no alcoholic drinks. Service was attentive and it was a good space for a small group to enjoy indoor or outdoor dining. read more

Unacceptable wait time for a weeknight dinner despite having a reservation -- the unprofessional, rude blonde hostess did not seat us until 45 minutes later than our res time, misled us 20 minutes in saying "they're setting up your table now!" (a lie), then loudly gossiped about us to other guests, calling us "angry customers waiting for their table in front". We were not visibly angry, and we were not offered any apologies by anyone at any point. We received a couple free drinks by accident as a result of a mix up lol, and at least the food was pretty good. But that was a terrible way to start a dinner. read more

We came for happy hour. We sat at the bar. Fantastic food, drinks, and service. Ambiance was nice. We will definitely be coming back. My fav thing I had was the dessert and Ceaser salad. read more

Fancy plates of Mexican cuisine. The food is good, a bit pricey, but is aligned with the style and atmosphere the restaurant is going for. There is valet private parking for $15, otherwise you can find street parking if available. Great place to catch some drinks and enjoy delicious food. read more

My friends and I stopped by here on a whim and were lucky enough to get seats at the bar immediately, so we didn't have to wait. This place is slightly chaotic as its quite narrow (despite being on a pretty big lot). There's a lot of ambient noise, so you have to raise your voice to be heard for sure. At one point, the side door was open which opens directly to the parking lot and someones front car beams were pointed right in our face for a while. As far as ordering, we asked for some recommendations. In my opinion, the servers did an okay job with it but didn't really walk us through the menu, and in retrospect I wish we had ordered some other things that people are talking about in their reviews that we didn't get a chance to do. We got: - guacamole: very good, but overpriced - tortillas: good, but its one of those places that charges for it, which is fine - ceviche: decent - albondigas: loved it! very tasty. but VERY small, its literally 3-4 meatballs - camote: we were intrigued by this, but it ended up being kind of meh - chicharron: solid, nothing super notable - enchiladas: solid, nothing super notable overall, the food was decent, but didn't blow me away. same with the ambience -- some good, some bad. and at these prices, i personally wouldn't go back. But it was cool to check out. read more

Service was impeccable! Wait wasn't too long on a Friday night after 8pm, ambiance and vibes were there. Food was good but at the cost of price point since portions are quite small. I do think there's equivalent quality around LA where you don't have to break the bank, but glad I got to try it! read more
