Sol Agave is a spectacular spot for an afternoon happy hour in Santa Monica. Me & my gf stopped by as soon as we landed and they did not disappoint. We ordered the margarita flight, ceviche, flautas, and calamari. The margaritas were very flavorful while each one had its own unique taste. Decided to walk to Sol Agave after visiting the pier. When we arrived, it was pretty empty so we sat at the bar. All the staff were friendly, server was great and the bartender made amazing drinks. I absolutely loved the blackberry cocktail they had. Food was delicious. I had the tampiqueña. Which was a skirt steak on top of a chicken quesadilla. Amazing. Meat was flavorful and tender. It came with this green soup, jalapeño cream soup. I have never tasted anything like it!!! Sooooo goooood. Chiles rellenos were also delicious. Had an great dinner at Sol Agave in Santa Monica. I grabbed a burrito and my girlfriend ordered the lamb, and both dishes were legit fire. My burrito was packed, super flavorful, and didn't fall apart halfway through (rare!). The lamb was tender, rich, and honestly one of the standout items of the night. For dessert we split the butter cake and the tres leches, and both were ridiculous. The butter cake was warm, soft, and crazy good, and the tres leches was probably the best I've had in LA -- super moist without being soggy and just the right amount of sweetness. On Halloween day, my significant other and I had friends visiting from out of the country. We met for an afternoon in Santa Monica and we had a little more time to spend together. I suggested seeing if we could grab a drink at Sol Agave. Very happy that we stopped by. It was mid-afternoon and happy hour time. The bar was relatively empty, and we let the host know we were only going to get drinks, but he allowed us to sit in the patio area AND order from the happy hour menu. We really appreciated it. The customer service was friendly and prompt. I think that since it was Halloween afternoon, it may have been a little less crowded that a normal Friday happy hour. The restaurant was comfortable and not loud at the time we were there. We enjoyed our drinks and the complimentary chips with salsa and bean dip. The chips were super fresh and delicious. I'm not recommending this spot. It felt like a tourist trap trying to imitate Puerta Vallarta's vibe with photos and free shots, but it forgot to deliver authentic Mexican dishes. The dishes didn't reflect southern CA Mexican flavors, the white rice was a no and stood out as mismatched, diminishing the main dishes, a staff member kept taking photos and pushing them on guests like a sales tactic, and we were offered a free vodka shot which added to the confusion about the concept and didn't contribute to a positive meal. This place is located on ocean Ave in the heart of Santa Monica across from the beach. Very nice spot and everyone was super friendly. Our group was greeted right away. We had reservations but arrived about 25 mins early and they still seated us once we checked in. (I was glad that we did not have to wait). Our server was really nice and checked in on our table to make sure we were ok and didn't need anything. This place is cute inside with indoor and out door seating, tables (high and low), booths and a full bar. I ordered the filet enchiladas. Unfortunately my food was cold so I did not enjoy them and took most of it home to heat up. (Heating up leftovers might not be as good). I'm sure they would have been good if served at the right temperature. I did dine here on Mother's Day so maybe that's why the food was cold. Very disappointing experience. We were initially told that our table would be ready shortly, yet several parties who arrived after us were seated before us without any explanation. After finally ordering, we were told our to-go order would be ready in 15-20 minutes, but we ended up waiting nearly 50 minutes. Delays can happen, but the lack of communication and apparent disregard for customers who had been waiting longer was frustrating. A simple update or acknowledgment would have gone a long way. Unfortunately, this experience left a poor impression, and I hope management works on improving both waitlist organization and customer service. read more

The margarita flight was super good, the mango margarita was da' bomb ! The cucumber was refreshing. And you just have to like tamarindo- I don't, but with some limes, it was much better. My husband decided to surprise me with tickets to Cirque du Soleil and it was in Santa Monica, so we decided to eat at Sol Agave. I've been to the one in San Clemente before, so I already had some expectations coming in. The restaurant itself was beautiful and clean, and it had a definite upscale vibe. We wanted to sit indoors because we were cold, but oddly enough we were seated in their coldest part of the restaurant, lol. I'll be sure to ask to sit elsewhere if I come back! First of all A+ service! We came around 1pm on a Monday, we were seated right away since there was plenty of open space. We were a group of 5 and fit comfortably in a corner booth. Three of us ordered the ceviche mixto (mixed shrimp, octopus, and fish) that came with a plantain chip and three small tostadas. We asked for tapatio and a couple of their other spicy salsas. We also asked for mayonnaise, pro tip, this is good on the tostada. :) The ceviche has a little spice due to the chile Serrano but it's really good, and the portion is pretty generous. The servers were super attentive and refilled our water and brought the things we asked for quickly. This is a great spot, I can't wait to return to try some more menu items. Parking nearby can fill up quickly but Santa Monica has plenty of options at a short walk. read more

We waited 45 minutes past our reservation time. The most infuriating part? The management. While the poor servers were running around sweating and trying their best, the manager was completely useless. Actually, "useless" is an understatement--he was visibly drunk. Instead of jumping on the floor to help his drowning staff or talk to frustrated customers, he was sitting right there at the bar drinking with a lady for two hours. It was a slap in the face to every guest in that building. He offered no help at all on one of the busiest nights of the year. When I finally tried to approach him to ask about our entrees (which took over an hour to arrive), he barely looked up from his date and brushed me off with a slurred "we're working on it." If you want to pay good prices to watch a manager get hammered while you starve, this is the spot for you. Otherwise, stay far away.
