I have a lot of guys that come in and out of Cali as they are training with me for their upcoming basketball season, and one of the most common questions I always get is, "What are the go-to restaurants around here?" When that question comes up, one of my absolute favorite Mexican cuisine spots to recommend is Javier's. It's one of those places that consistently delivers a great experience every time I go. The ambience at Javier's is perfect whether you're planning a date night or just an evening out with your family. It has a warm, welcoming vibe that makes you want to sit back and enjoy your time there. On top of that, the drinks always hit the spot and pair really well with the food, making the whole dining experience feel complete and well thought out. My go-to dish has to be the seafood enchiladas. You really can't go wrong with any of the options, but those stand out every time. The texture of the enchiladas is spot on, and the salsa complements the dish perfectly without overpowering it. Every bite feels balanced and flavorful, and it's one of those meals you find yourself craving again soon after. I also always make sure to grab the guacamole because, honestly, who doesn't love chips and guac? What I really appreciate is that this guac is different from the typical versions you find elsewhere--it has a freshness and flavor that really sets it apart. I ordered the Mar y Tierra (Steak & Lobster). The portion was just enough to satisfy me, and my steak came out perfectly medium rare. My friend's was noticeably more rare despite us both ordering medium rare. The lobster was tender, although both the steak and lobster were a bit salty. For appetizers, we tried the Empanadas de Camarón and Empanadas de Picadillo, which were good but nothing particularly memorable. I also had the Hibiscus cocktail, which was just okay. Service was good and our waiter was attentive. The ambiance was beautiful and upscale, although the bass was very noticeable at our booth--we could actually feel it shaking. In a nutshell. Food is ehhhh. Drinks are just okay. Ambience ruined by our experience. Staff is lacking direction. Visited 7/24/2026. We arrived approximately 3pm. We were greeted and seated. Our waiter Armando took our order . We were eating our appetizers ceviche and guacamole that I ended up eating with a fork because we'd run out of chips we were waiting so long. Armando returned to our table and asked if we're ready to order? We explained we'd already ordered (with him) He left and we waited. My husband had to flag him down and he'd forgotten to put our order in. So not once, but TWICE our order was mishandled. My husband is a gentleman and did not want me to express my frustration. By this point we'd waited so long the lunch shift turned into dinner staff (literally) and our table was handed over. The new waiter apologized profusely. They brought out my plate, steak picado and ate my meal alone while my husband and friend waited. Our complete order finally arrives and my husband and friend's enchiladas are tough to eat. We ask for the check, The waiter was embarrassed to tell us all checks over $200 automatically add I believe add 20% gratuity (it may be higher). Understand we always tip well, but they should've considered the experience we'd just had. My biggest reason for leaving this review is...before we left I veered to.the restroom. I did not know where the restroom was located so I asked our waiter and he said down that way and to the right As I was walking past a table, a very large size man says to me in a very rude voice "can I help you?" I realized they were having maybe a management meeting. I am not sure who he thought he was talking to or why he took that tone with me, but there is no excuse and I was completely taken back. I asked for the restroom and he pointed towards the other side. This is NOT hospitality or how to treat a guest in your establishment. He needs to learn etiquette. There is clearly a lack of communication and operational problems and the staff was frustrated with each other. Not everyone is there just for drinks. Our waiter continuously served drinks at the bar instead of tending to his tables. Including parking we spent over $300 on a casual lunch for 3 with no alcohol that was simply horrendous. This javiers is located across from the Crypto arena so you know its gonna be busy. But as soon as you walk in you are greeted and added to the waitlist. It does get busy but the good thing is this place is huge so you wont be waiting long unless they are understaffed. From the moment you sit the waiter is asking you if you want any drinks and if you ask for recommendations from the menu the waiter actually gives you some choices and opinions on menu items. The food quality is amazing. Like yeah its expensive but it taste so delicious so be prepared to pay big bucks for the food here. The good thing is that since the food is good you wont be mad when you pay the bill. The drinks are also good but they should put less ice in them. Came here for lunch with my sisters and honestly, the food did not disappoint--everything was flavorful and well-presented. We started with the octopus,which was super tender (not rubbery at all ) and paired really nicely with fresh avocado, herbs, and a light citrusy kick. Definitely one of the better octopus dishes I've had. The shrimp empanadas were crispy, golden, and packed with flavor. Topped with crema, avocado sauce, and fresh onions, they had the perfect balance of crunchy + creamy + tangy. Loved that they were stuffed full or shrimp and not greasy. For the main, the steak fajita dish came with sautéed peppers and onions, a roasted pepper, creamy beans, and guac on the side. The steak had a nice char and good seasoning, and everything on the plate complemented each other really well. The fajitas were cooked to perfection. My sisters ordered the Branzino and chicken quesadillas and Agua chile. The fish was cooked perfectly and didn't come out tasting too fishy and the quesadillas were stuffed with chicken. The atmosphere is definitely one of the highlights, beautiful space, lively energy, and a great spot for a night out with friends or clients. The food was solid across the board. The chips and salsa were fresh, the cocktails were well-made, and the entrees were flavorful and nicely presented. The service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. The reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that the prices are on the higher side, even for DTLA, and a few dishes didn't quite live up to the expectations set by the ambiance. Nothing was bad, but a couple of items felt more good than memorable. That said, I'd definitely come back. I love Javier's! Javier's was the first upscale Mexican restaurant I visited upon moving to California in 2000. Laguna Beach was their first location and I lived just above Main Beach so could walk there. Fast forward, 25 years later and they have expanded and renovated Newport Beach, opened Irvine and launched a gorgeous location in DTLA. The details and tequila here are the best! This location is perfect for a libation and appetizer before a game or event at Crypto Arena. It is a simple jaunt across the street. The margaritas are solid, the chips are thin and the guacamole flavorful. The food was very good and the place is absolutely beautiful. We ordered the quesadilla with meat ($32 or $38, can't remember exactly). It came with guacamole which was really good. We had the mariscos enchiladas ($55) and our favorite one was the lobster one. The drinks were good, especially the guava one but also on the pricey side ($22-$25 each). The best was probably the tres leches cake ($16). The service was generally good but slow at times. Is there a way to leave no stars. My friend and I came for a late lunch. We waited 15 minutes for water. We ordered a steak, medium and short ribs which took almost an hour. The steak was well done and tough, my short ribs were drowning in negro sauce with some after thoughts onions and it was nasty. Don't waste your money for this high-end school food! We had a drink at the bar first and Joey was polite and welcoming. We came for a company holiday outing and the service was prompt and friendly. I ordered the Chile relleno one cheese and the other with meat. The cheese was delicious, I didnt like the meat option, it wasn't a flavor profile I enjoyed. The aesthetics of this restaurant are gorgeous - took me back to Tulum! The enchilada trio was delicious; would recommend. But it's definitely pricey. While I loved the vibes of this restaurant, I don't know if I would come back again. They placed our group of 6 in a corner right next to two other huge groups. We were so tight that our purses were touching. When I walked to the bathroom, I was shocked to see how big and empty the other half of the restaurant was. Why not space people out a little so they aren't squished? The room echoed so much and I could barely hear my friends; rather the voices of the people next to us. The food is delicious. From the presentation of their dishes to the taste, food is always 10 out of 10. Their signature drinks taste good. Service is attentive and friendly. Ambiance is classy as well as casual. The bar area is nice with friendly bartenders. If you come in event days, make sure you have reservations...we did and we did not have to wait at all. Table was ready. They do accept walkins and the wait was not long for walkins. So take a chance you may get lucky. Or eat at the bar. Always a lively place. They also have tvs in a certain area if you would like to watch sports and eat. They also have private rooms where your party can play their own music or watch tv. Very fun place to be. Our waiter, Sebastian, would disappear for 30 minutes at a time, leaving us to flag down other servers just to get basic assistance. We eventually had to ask a manager to track him down. When Sebastian finally returned with the check, we discovered he had charged us twice for tip. He conveniently dropped the bill and disappeared again, almost as if he hoped we wouldn't notice. It was just okay. - special house salad: reminds me of El Torito's Mexican Caesar salad w/ less taste but not worth $18 - trio enchiladas (1 shrimp, 1 lobster, and 1crab) was $50; rice & beans were a la carte & had to be ordered separately for $6 The green sauce went perfectly with the seafood. They could've used a bit more seasoning but I get it. Food temperature was way off and friends told me this is common at their other locations. My plate was hotter than the food. I sucked it up b/c I don't like sending food back unless it is absolutely necessary. I ate ~1/3 and the rest was heated up much hotter in my microwave for lunch today than how I received them at the restaurant yesterday. Lol! The best part of the meal was the chips & salsa. Servers were a bit stingy, however. For 5 ppl, we got one basket of chips and one small bowl of salsa that we obviously couldn't reach at our big table. It took a while for someone to bring more which is the least they could do as pricey as their menu is. One friend came a little late so she asked for chips & salsa while she waited on her food to be served. There was hesitation again. While bagging up our food, the waitress put extra chips and salsa in a couple of the bags. She returned after the fact and said we would be charged for them to go. My friend had a little chat with her and said it was the principle of having them offered to go and not being told there was an additional charge that she had a problem with and we agreed. Needless to say, we took the scraps of chips & salsa from the table and the server bagged up one fresh order for my friend who came late free of charge (as she should have). Would I return? Maybe, someday for the ambience and/or on a date. But this is not a place I would run to as my first choice. The restaurant itself is beautiful!!! But the delay in attending us was frustrating even with the amount of waiters and waitresses we saw pass us by that we almost wanted to leave. The food was delicious and way more for two but also felt like forever for it to arrive to our table that we lost our appetite. Came here for my moms bday on a Wednesday night. Was booked for an early 6pm reservation. Once seated, we saw the private dining area and thought it might be nice to upgrade to there since we were celebrating a special occasion and tried to book it with an f&b minimum. The manager told us there was a seating at 7, so they wouldn't be able to seat us there. Not an issue, at least we tried. They ended up losing out because no one was booked (we stayed until 9 and that room was never filled) and we would've agreed to a f&b minimum that was triple our bill for the night! All good, they saved us a couple grand. Now the food-- it was good but not amazing. For the price point it is steep but again you're paying for the ambiance and "LA Aesthetics". Overall you can probably get better Mexican food, larger portions and at a better price elsewhere..but we came here for a special occasion and the atmosphere definitely feels more elevated. Service was great in the beginning but towards dessert time, it took forever for sometime to take our dessert order and another 30 minutes to fulfill it. By the time we received it we honestly just wanted the check and left. Don't get the churros, not really worth it and had a weird texture. I've definitely had better and at places with bigger portions. The mashed potatoes were extremely bland so it was tough to feel full from the meal without carbs. I ordered a Pineapple mocktail and it tasted like it was straight out of a dole pineapple can :( We did really enjoy our appetizers, Aguachile De Camerón ($32) and Ceviche de Ahi ($26). Portions were small but very tasty, flavorful and great spice. For dessert, we enjoyed their Pastel Tres Leches ($16) sliced cake which wasn't too sweet but very moist and delicious. I came to Javier's DTLA to grab dinner with a friend before an event at Crypto.com last week, and it was hands down one of the worst service experiences I've ever had at a restaurant, especially one that's supposed to be high-end and is relatively expensive. We arrived before our reservation, so we grabbed a drink in the lounge, which was fine. However, at the time of our reservation, they didn't have a table for us and made us wait longer. They couldn't transfer the tab to the table, so I had to chase down a waiter to get the bill and pay before we were seated. When we were seated, the server did take our order quickly, but didn't provide any service roll-ups, so we had no utensils. This wouldn't have been a problem, but when I asked for them, they brought over a handful of forks and one napkin, and then had to track down another server to try and get silverware so we could eat once our food arrived. This server seemed perplexed and first tried to hand me a stack of bar napkins. Finally, our original server came and got us the roll-ups we needed so we could eat. But for a fine dining establishment, this was not what I expected at all. The food itself was fine, but overpriced, and the margarita was borderline undrinkable. My friends and went to Javier's before heading to a concert at the Peacock Theatre. I've been to Javier's in Newport Beach and now I'm Downtown LA. The food was very good. The service was not perfect but not terrible. The waiter needed to be more attentive. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our experience with the drinks and food. I didn't take pictures of the food just the group at the table. I would recommend this restaurant. read more
