Just what we needed! My daughter just moved into an apartment a few blocks from here, and moved in on January 1. So we had been up late celebrating New Years, and were tired & hungry from moving things into the apartment. Brighton Cafe was SWAMPED with customers, and the line was huge, but they were moving things along at a good clip. Our waiter Wu Tang was super nice and took great care of us. The coffee never stopped flowing, and the food was good diner fare.Clearly a popular neighborhood hangout. I'm sure we'll be back. read more

I got the "Big Five" which consists of a pancake, an egg, a slice of French toast, hash browns and 3 sausage links for $7.50. The coffee is horrendous. The iced coffee is basically water, which is why they must put so much cream and sugar in. However, it's cheap and if you want some cheap sweet terrible coffee this is the place. Food is exactly what you'd expect for the price. No frills, definitely most things you could make better yourself at home, but they aren't trying to appear as if it'll be a life changing experience. They do what they do well and they provide cheap food and a nice atmosphere in a college neighborhood. Banana bread is pretty good! read more

I miss this place! Bit of a dive, but they have a yummy breakfast and when its right across the street from your apartment, it cant be beat. I especially love how the menu says "Cuppa tea" and how they apparently randomly have some weird pasta dishes. I'd stick w/ breakfast at this place. I hate when people have one bad experience at a place (ie: Waiter brought me regular when I asked for diet) and proceed to trash it on yelp. With that said, I have had 3 bad experiences here, and that is my magic number. Everything here is standard, but the service is MISERABLE. My third strike was the worst offense. I walked in and sat down with a group if 5. 20 mins passed and I finally got up to ask someone to take our drink order. 10 more mins pass, they come by. 20 mins later they come back and ask for food order. Food took 30 mins to come out (at a diner). I almost walked out without paying because after the hour and 20 it took to get food on the table, it took an additional 20 to get the check. I waited patiently to pay because I am not a monster. 2 stars, because the only redeeming quality is that they serve New England iced coffee, which is hard to come by. read more

Starbucks can't spell my name, but these people know my coffee before I'm awake, and you just can't put a price on that. Food was really poor. I was misled by the reviews to believe the breakfast would be "good" and "solid." But my wife couldn't choke down the mealy pancake. The french toast was just the worst, and covered in raw cinnamon powder. We also had eggs and bacon and home fries, but none of it was very good. A big disappointment. Absolute top greasy spoon! Best place for weekened breakfast. They're always really friendly and fast. The more you go, the better it gets. It's so inexepnsive, I often feel like I'm ripping them off. $5.50 for an entire breakfast plate?!?! You must be joking right? After begrudgingly moving to this area of Brighton after a fire, I recently found this simple and cheap diner, and for this coffee drinker who loathed not having a Dunkie's nearby, it was like the clouds parted and the birds sung. Their iced coffee is the most amazing concoction on the face of the earth. It makes me happy. Unlike the big coffee chains, when they put cream and sugar in the coffee, they take time to stir the coffee until the sugar dissolves and the coffee and cream are nicely joined. The iced coffee may be sweet for some tastes, but for me, it is amazing. Their hot coffee is great as well, and is an excellent warmer while you wait for the T on those so called "cold" days Boston has (nothing here is cold to me - I'm from Western NY!). I have gone there a few times a week for coffee since October, and I have never gotten a bad cup - always filled to the top, and no burnt coffee or bad brews. Food wise, their plates and service are what is to be expected from a family run diner. I've grown up going to diners, and I never have known diners to have the most attentive service, because all of their employees are wearing many hats. (I also may be overly tolerant towards service because two members of my immediate family work in food service.) The food is simple, greasy, but is great when you would like brunch and have nothing in your kitchen to make brunch with. My standby is the Greek omelet - anything with feta makes me a happy camper. All in all, the coffee is AMAZING, the rest is what you can expect from a busy family run diner. You aren't going to the Four Seasons, you are going to a diner - thus, you may have to adjust your expectations accordingly. read more

OK this place is like a hole in the wall and with an old, eroded sign you may just miss the place. However, if you can find Waldo you can and should find the place. It's the perfect hangover breakfast spot, or just a "I don't feel like walking far" breakfast spot. It looks like a dive diner, however, the food is good and you can't beat the prices. When I moved to Brighton I was looking for a breakfast joint and a great place to grab a coffee in the morning. When I noticed there was no convenient Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts I became concerned. I decided to give this place a shot. At first I wasn't sure because of the "divey" atmosphere. But the food ended up being amazing and the coffee was always brewed fresh. Unlike Starbucks, they don't over roast their beans, and the ice coffee has less acidity then Dunkin' Donuts. My only issues are that they serve coffee in styrofoam cups which is a bit of a turn off for me and that the spinach they use in their omelettes tastes frozen and has an overpowering flavor. The issues aside, I will give them five stars because the amazing service and good food (the alternative is feeding money into a corporate chain). When I am rushing out the door in the morning I can call ahead and have them make me a custom breakfast sandwich to go with any veggies, bread, cheese, or eggs that I like. When I pick it up I get my Greenmountain roasters coffee with soymilk and the staff is always quick, courteous and friendly. In terms of price, it usually ends up being the same or less than a breakfast sandwich and coffee at Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks. read more

I come here every few months whenever I have a craving for a diner breakfast, but I'm finally writing a review because this recent new chef has the scrambled egg with cheese and sausage item down to perfection. Well, I don't actually know if it's a new chef but this breakfast was much much better than the previous visits. I ordered two eggs, scrambled with cheese. It was fluffy and cooked just right with the cheese perfectly melted and oozing slightly out from the center. I know I'm making a big deal out of this but it truly is a big deal. The fluffiness and texture of scrambled eggs is hard to get right. I've tried (and am still trying) at home, but let's leave that alone for now. In other diners, I've had scrambled eggs that were over cooked slightly and the eggs become dry, not so fluffy, and even leathery sometime, or if its slightly undercooked (which I actually don't mind), you don't have that golden brown look to it, it's still not quite fluffy enough, and the cheese doesn't get fully melted. And having the cheese in the middle is key. I've had it mixed in but then it doesn't have the impact it should, or on top which just feels like an afterthought especially when the cheese isn't gooey. Anyways, onto the sausage. Yes, I know, what's so specially about sausage they didn't even make and only had to fry it up? Yeah, well, I love my sausages and I've only been to a couple of places that can get it just right, where that perfectly fried crispy skin encases a juicy inside. Also, I must mention it since it's a bit rare for diners, at least for my breakfast, they weren't heavy-handed with the oil, which may be why my eggs turned out so well. So 4 stars because I love my sausage and eggs and this place has the best so far, the fast and efficient service (I totally agree with the other reviewer about the polite and nice but not overly friendly staff which I prefer as well since I usually want to eat my breakfast in peace), and it's relatively cheap. Not 5 stars since I haven't tried the rest of the menu, the decor is lacking but for the cost of the meal, I wouldn't have it any other way, the orange juice was thin and probably from concentrate, and the home fries were bland. From what I could taste of it, the home fries seasoning seemed fine, there just wasn't enough of it. My eggs arrived raw (the whites) and when I asked for them to be cooked longer, the waitress argued with me saying that's how I asked for them. I live right across the street from this place and my hangovers/late mornings are so thankful for it. While the quality isn't exactly gourmet (think: what your mom would cook for breakfast), it is DIRT CHEAP. The potatoes are really good, the iced coffee is great (more milk and sugar than coffee, but that's good with me!), and the place is very quaint. The service is iffy, but again -- it's DIRT CHEAP.
