Perfect for a late Saturday brunch after sleeping in after a long week of work! I know brunch can be quite an affair- but the good thing about this is place is that you can literally wake up, put on a jacket, and head on over for some good food for cheap prices (and I mean CHEAP.) Brighton Cafe had the look of a good diner style spot, and got pretty good reviews. I really wanted to love this place, but it just felt like a bit of a miss overall. I ordered a ham and cheese omelette with a side of bacon and a cup of coffee. Omelette was dry, and had some sort of white American cheese in it, which wasn't that appetizing. Home fries weren't really cooked much - I expected to see some sort of griddle char or something on them, but they were pale and coated in some sort of seasoning that wasn't very good - maybe they were microwaved? But, hey, service was pleasant, coffee was hot, and I ate most of what I was served (left the home fries). They had a steady trickle of customers ordering coffee and takeout breakfast sandwiches (not many dine-in patrons), so clearly this is a regular spot for many in the area. This place was in walking distance to where we were staying while visiting MA. It wasn't busy at all and had a lot of open space for seating. Our waitress brought us coffee right away and took our orders shortly after. My boyfriend had starting asking specific questions about how the food was cooked, and the waitress immediately asked if he was lactose intolerant. So huge points for that astute realization. We ordered breakfast dishes that came out fast and hot. And scrumptious! We weren't bothered while eating, and the waitress came over once more to refill our coffees. When I looked it up on Yelp, however, I was surprised to see the majority of positive reviews. So I bookmarked Brighton Cafe and forgot about it for a while. Since its Thanksgiving break, and I'm still too lazy to go buy groceries, I decided to walk to Brighton Cafe for breakfast and give it a try. I was immediately greeted and told to pick a seat anywhere. I cozied up to the counter and was brought a menu and a glass of water. There were several items I would have liked to try (i.e. the Irish breakfast, etc) but settled on "The Big Five" since it let me sample a little of everything. For $7.50, The Big Five comes with one egg (any style), home fries, one pancake, one piece of French Toast, and one meat of your choice (sausage, bacon, ham, or corned beef hash). I chose a scrambled egg and corned beef hash. While I waited for my food, I ordered an iced coffee (medium). The server accidentally gave me a large but didn't charge me for it. It was HUGE - it was enough iced coffee to last me an entire day (and that's saying a lot for a grad student). The food came out fast and I dug in. The food wasn't anything spectacular or out of this world - just simple, diner-style breakfast. But the service was phenomenal. The staff was so friendly and engaging, I added a star simply for impeccable service. So if you're looking for 5-star quality food, this may not be the spot. But if you're a student or on a budget and want some decent, fill-me-up food, Brighton Cafe is a great little spot. read more

Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod. This is the best no-frills breakfast place I've been to in so long. Usually when I go, it's packed to the gills, so I recommend not trying to bring large groups through for breakfast. My man and I were finally able to snag a table a couple weeks ago, and it was such a delight. The prices are incredible-- it feels like being back out in the 'burbs again. My man and I were able to eat our fill and have our coffees for under $20 altogether. They also had a plethora of hot sauces on the table for us; I hate hot sauce, but I can appreciate that it was there for the patrons who do enjoy it. :) Service was great. I've lived right across the street from this place for most of my life, and this Sunday was the first time I've been inside for brunch. I ordered an ice coffee--the largest size possible (x-large) for $3.00. The waiter came back with a MOVIE THEATER SIZED CUP filled with really good french vanilla iced coffee. The portions here are really big at a really cheap price. I'm definitely going to get more familiar with my neighborhood now. I'm most likely coming back to this place again too! I've gone and sat down for breakfast here on a weekend. I've also gotten delivery as well as gone in and gotten take away. Never disappointed. They get their donuts from Union Square Donuts so they're always delicious. Hot coffee is bottomless if you sit down. You really can't beat the prices here for breakfast, especially if you want something simple like breakfast sandwiches and coffee. The staff is efficient and it's a small and cozy place but don't expect to sit around for awhile or spend the day. It's always busy on the weekends so the staff will want you to come in, eat, and leave when you're finished.
