Perfect for a late Saturday brunch after sleeping in after a long week of work! I know brunch can be quite an affair- but the good thing about this is place is that you can literally wake up, put on a jacket, and head on over for some good food for cheap prices (and I mean CHEAP.) Definitely not the most delicious thing I have ever eaten, but definitely hit the spot for only $9 (what a deal!!!). I'm a big fan of buying local, and I'm always down for a good "greasy spoon" diner. I found myself in the area with a lot of time to kill early on a weekday and Googled breakfast spots near me. Brighton Cafe had the look of a good diner style spot, and got pretty good reviews. I really wanted to love this place, but it just felt like a bit of a miss overall. I ordered a ham and cheese omelette with a side of bacon and a cup of coffee. Omelette was dry, and had some sort of white American cheese in it, which wasn't that appetizing. Home fries weren't really cooked much - I expected to see some sort of griddle char or something on them, but they were pale and coated in some sort of seasoning that wasn't very good - maybe they were microwaved? But, hey, service was pleasant, coffee was hot, and I ate most of what I was served (left the home fries). They had a steady trickle of customers ordering coffee and takeout breakfast sandwiches (not many dine-in patrons), so clearly this is a regular spot for many in the area. It just left me wanting more. I probably won't come back, but mostly just because I'll not likely be in this area with extra time to kill for breakfast again. read more

Awesome diner at great prices. Came here on a Saturday morning around 10 and was able to get a table of 7 after two kind gentlemen moved to a smaller table. I ordered two eggs, corned beef hash, wheat toast, and home fries. We also split toasted blueberry muffins. All came over very quick and the service was very pleasant. At first I thought the portions were a bit small, but I still took home about a fourth of my meal for an afternoon snack. The classic tale of "don't judge a book by its cover." I had walked or ridden past Brighton Cafe on the green line several times since moving to Boston and thought nothing of it. When I looked it up on Yelp, however, I was surprised to see the majority of positive reviews. So I bookmarked Brighton Cafe and forgot about it for a while. Since its Thanksgiving break, and I'm still too lazy to go buy groceries, I decided to walk to Brighton Cafe for breakfast and give it a try. I was immediately greeted and told to pick a seat anywhere. I cozied up to the counter and was brought a menu and a glass of water. There were several items I would have liked to try (i.e. the Irish breakfast, etc) but settled on "The Big Five" since it let me sample a little of everything. For $7.50, The Big Five comes with one egg (any style), home fries, one pancake, one piece of French Toast, and one meat of your choice (sausage, bacon, ham, or corned beef hash). I chose a scrambled egg and corned beef hash. While I waited for my food, I ordered an iced coffee (medium). The server accidentally gave me a large but didn't charge me for it. It was HUGE - it was enough iced coffee to last me an entire day (and that's saying a lot for a grad student). The food came out fast and I dug in. The food wasn't anything spectacular or out of this world - just simple, diner-style breakfast. But the service was phenomenal. The staff was so friendly and engaging, I added a star simply for impeccable service. So if you're looking for 5-star quality food, this may not be the spot. But if you're a student or on a budget and want some decent, fill-me-up food, Brighton Cafe is a great little spot. read more

I've lived right across the street from this place for most of my life, and this Sunday was the first time I've been inside for brunch. I ordered an ice coffee--the largest size possible (x-large) for $3.00. The waiter came back with a MOVIE THEATER SIZED CUP filled with really good french vanilla iced coffee. The portions here are really big at a really cheap price. I'm definitely going to get more familiar with my neighborhood now. I'm most likely coming back to this place again too! Ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod. This is the best no-frills breakfast place I've been to in so long. Usually when I go, it's packed to the gills, so I recommend not trying to bring large groups through for breakfast. My man and I were finally able to snag a table a couple weeks ago, and it was such a delight. The prices are incredible-- it feels like being back out in the 'burbs again. My man and I were able to eat our fill and have our coffees for under $20 altogether. They also had a plethora of hot sauces on the table for us; I hate hot sauce, but I can appreciate that it was there for the patrons who do enjoy it. :) Service was great. This place is one of the nearest restaurants to my apartment and I sometimes come here if I am way too lazy to cook a hot breakfast. It is only open until 4:00 PM, mainly because this is more of a breakfast and lunch diner. The lady was kind of nice to me, so the service was good. For $2.50, you can get an egg and cheese sandwich either in an English muffin or regular bread. I had mine with regular bread, and it was okay, nothing really special. The next time I came, I decided to order a breakfast combo. I ordered the #5, which consists of eggs cooked any style you like, one pancake, one french toast, home fries, and any breakfast meat (sausage, bacon or ham). I ordered my eggs scrambled, with sausage, and requested blueberries in my pancake, since I like blueberry pancakes. The entree comes with regular coffee. The coffee was just average, even with cream and sugar. The egg portions were small, it seems that they only used one egg. The eggs were tasty, had almost of an homemade taste. The home fries were okay, they have a soft texture when I ate them. The french toast was seasoned with powdered sugar, making it sweeter, and it was pretty good, especially with the syrup. The pancakes were tasty, especially with a little syrup. The blueberries tasted a little like actual blueberries taken from an actual market stand and put into the pancake batter. The sausages had a really greasy taste, and were not really great. The price for the #5 is $7.50, but I had to pay $.60 extra just for having blueberries in the pancake, making the total to be $8.10. However, this dish should be more than enough to get your stomach really full. After eating, I was fully alert, and ready to take on the day. One observation that I found is that the staff uses regular products that I believe you can get from any supermarket. Three particular examples were the orange juice (saw one of the employees use a generic brand in a gallon jug while pouring it to someone), the cream, and the milk (all Hood products). Overall, this is not a bad choice to get a good breakfast, but like I said earlier, I would probably come back here again if I am way too lazy to make a hot breakfast. I would probably come back here again for either the French Toast, the Pancakes or to eat their lunch entrees. read more

I've gone and sat down for breakfast here on a weekend. I've also gotten delivery as well as gone in and gotten take away. Never disappointed. They get their donuts from Union Square Donuts so they're always delicious. Hot coffee is bottomless if you sit down. You really can't beat the prices here for breakfast, especially if you want something simple like breakfast sandwiches and coffee. The staff is efficient and it's a small and cozy place but don't expect to sit around for awhile or spend the day. It's always busy on the weekends so the staff will want you to come in, eat, and leave when you're finished.
