As a Coronado local I eat a the Brigantine for a weekend lunch with some frequency and generally enjoy the food. This weekend was the exception because of the waiter who was wearing an ill fitting mask that continued to slip below his nose. After observing him walking around and carrying food to a table with his low riding mask I felt compelled to comment to him that he needed to keep his mask over his nose and then distance ourselves from him as much as possible for the duration of our meal. I realize some people don't care but since there are rules in place, I should be able to expect compliance of restaurant employees. read more

Very nice ambiance! Nice presentation of food and cloth napkins. The downside was the fresh crab in the crab and shrimp salad. Perhaps our mistake. We expected lump crab meat as that is how we have always had crab on previous crab or seafood salads. Instead, the crab look almost ground....most likely canned. It was soooooo strong and fishy. We ordered extra lemon wedges in an attempt to tame the fish taste, but in the end the crab was completely inedible. Ate only the top lettuce (a lower lettuce tasted fishy), boiled egg and tomatoes. Our waiter advised that he would let the chef know of the problem. No adjustment was offered, but we didn't expect that. Bottom line.... Nice place in some ways, but verify that you are getting LUMP crab meat as the fresh crab served was absolutely inedible. So bad, in fact, that even typing this I'm getting nauseous again. read more

This my first Happy Hour at the Brig, since their Coronado location totally renovated it about a year ago. I have to say as a long-time local and happy hour & brunch patron of it's former layout & décor (darker, intimate private booths and lots of wood paneling) the new opened-up, modern look (exposed ceiling ducts and harder floors/wall surfaces, etc.) really aren't an improvement to me. The acoustics really suffer in terms of reflected noise to point you have to communicate with raised voices. Oh well, guess this craft-beer brewery look what is in right now. The food & drink menu still reign, though....and my wife visiting from Spain was salivating for the classic spinach salad. We also had HUGE fish pieces for our HH tacos. The fried artichokes also were nice. Brig brews and margarita specials also maintained standards. To top off, Selena was a very welcoming, pleasant & professional server. So in summary: 5 stars for food & drink happy hour values / 2 for new décor (poor acoustics). read more

Everything about our meal was perfection. Good service, delicious drinks (blueberry lemonade whattup!) and they brought all 4 dishes out together, which I always think is a nice touch. We had the mussels to start, the macadamia crusted mahi was a hit, and my boyfriend loved his seared ahi which had an Asian-fusion twist. We finished with the s'mores brownie (worth it!!) and a Brigantine Coffee (even more worth it). We'll definitely be back. read more

We have been going to Brigantine when we visit San Diego for many years since a friend took my wife to the Shelter Island location years ago. We also go to this location in Coronado when we visit here. We have always had a good experience, and this one was as good as ever. First of all, the renovation to the place is amazing. Very contemporary, yet comfortable. Lots of light, and you get a fantastic view of the Hotel Del Coronado out the window from the patio. But the star here, in my opinion, is the happy hour. Try to come on Taco Tuesday if you can because that menu is available all day long and not just during the already fantastic happy hour. And this visit, I ordered a grilled swordfish taco and a fried calamari taco. My wife ordered the grilled mahi mahi taco. Though I realize that some people eat more fish tacos than we do, we find it hard to believe that anyone could have better fish or seafood tacos. They were absolutely amazing. We each also ordered the spinach salad that was on the happy hour menu, and it has to be one of the best deals in town. It is covered in the perfect amount of bacon, egg, and vinaigrette dressing, and it's a really large size for only $4.75. Top that off with the fact that we had an excellent and super friendly server, Jessica, who highly recommended the flourless chocolate cake, which we decided to split. It was really good. It was my favorite meal during our stay, and we will definitely be back. Some people apparently complain about the high prices on the regular menu, but I don't consider them any higher than a lot of other restaurants in a tourist area. Besides, the happy hour is completely affordable, and the quality is top notch for everything I've ever ordered. Just be aware that the happy hour menu is slightly different from location to location. For instance, we love the potato skins at the Shelter Island location, but they don't have those here. The latest news is that Brigantine is taking over the old Anthony's Fish Grotto building on the bay near downtown San Diego. If the renovation there is anything like this one, it will be a fantastic experience with a great view of the bay. Rest assured, we'll be trying out that place after it opens! read more

Even though my last couple of experiences at the Del Mar location were bad, I was in Coronado and saw the sign and decided to give Brigantine another try. I love their artichoke fritters - but that was the only good thing about lunch. The seafood Louie salad was full of yellow lettuce and drowned in dressing. The service was slow and uneven. I wish the owners would pay attention to these problems because Brigantine used to be one of my favorites. I went to the one in Del Mar at least twice a month. From start to finish, our experience at Brigantine was so disappointing. We wanted to go there because my boyfriend used to work at another Brigantine location and has great memories, plus it was our anniversary, so I thought it would be special. When we were seated, we were at a table completely facing a wall, which was very awkward. We were finally greeted by someone after 15 minutes of waiting, and all she said was "are you ready?" We told our server it was our anniversary and that my boyfriend used to work for the company, and she replied "cool! Are you ready?" My boyfriend got the taco plate and was very pleased. I got the chicken with goat cheese polenta. Apparently the kitchen doesn't know how to properly course entrees because 5 min later our server says "the fish and chips are ready now but the chicken is going to be a while. I can either bring the fish and chips now or bring both entrees together but one will be cold." I've worked in fin dining restaurants for 15 years, and that is something you NEVER ask a guest. Long story short, my boyfriend obviously didn't want to eat cold food so he got his first and ate alone. Then I got mine and it was FREEZING cold! I asked for a new side of polenta because it was the part of the meal I was looking forward to most, and the server brought out a completely different polenta with meat in it. It was clear our server has very little knowledge of the menu. When I asked her for the correct side she looked at me like I was crazy. I was hoping that a manager would have come over to try and smooth things over, but nope! Poor management and ever worse service. NEVER AGAIN!!! and if you're wondering, there was never a mention of our anniversary. Don't go here if you want a special experience. I want my hard earned money back read more

For the appetizer we had the seafood fondue. It was ah-mazing! We each wanted a little steak and seafood so i ordered the signature swordfish, he ordered the steak and we mentioned we'd just share from each other's plate. To our pleasant surorise, Sariah, our server, had the chef just plate it so we each had half a portion of each other's entree...surf & turf! Man this place has gone down hill since the renovation. The hostess and waitress were both nice and the food came out quick, but the food wasn't as good as it use to be. The poke tacos were pretty much a tomato coleslaw taco with one measly slab of ahi. The whole place was empty on the lounge side and we had the pleasure of a loud table of 8 sitting practically on top of us. Maybe consider switching around the floor plan so that the big tables aren't next to the two tops. It felt claustrophobic. Since the place has been redone it's as if everyone echos. It makes me sad that it's lost its charm. The old brigantine had a romantic appeal to it and this place is just like every other restaurant. read more

I sat at the bar while my husband went to the restroom I received 1 menu (which was not a dinner menu) I stated to the bartender that I need 2 he just walked away I thought he didn't hear me a asked again he snapped at me and said "I herd you" that bartender never took a drink order. The next bartender didn't ask us if we wanted a drink as couple sat down after us he waited on them when my husband said we would like to order a drink too, but he took care of them, which I mentioned we were here before them. Pretty disappointing. Service was slow and food was not hot. I think it was our servers fault. She rarely stopped by and was slow about taking our order. Slow delivering drinks and the food took a long time. If it was hot I would blame the cooks, but it obviously sat waiting for the server to hand out. I gave them 2 stars cuz the crab fondu was really good. Very thing else was a rip-off. I spent $200 on meals worth about $50. Oh, and the salad ordered before dinner never came and we had to remove it from the bill. We also told our server the food was cold and she offered to replace it. But who wants to wait another 30 minutes for that? The manager walked by once and didn't say a word to us. So we are the cold food and left... Never to return. read more

A couple guests in our party are not huge sea food fans (myself included) and the pork chop Daniel recommended was delicious. BEST CRISPY FISH TACOS EVER! That is really all that you need to know. So I went to college in San Diego and it was literally almost a weekly tradition to head to the Brigantine for Taco Tuesday or Happy Hour. Their crispy fish tacos are out of this world! Now that I live in AZ, I crave them regularly so naturally, I just HAD to go when I was visiting my best friend this past weekend. The Coronado location has been renovated and 'modernized' if you will. It looks amazing! As always during the summertime, there is a huge dinner crowd so a reservation is highly suggested but regardless, it is worth the wait. We went for dinner but they still let me order the fish tacos off of the bar menu! YIPEE!!! I almost shed a tear when I didn't see them on the dinner menu. (Just kidding, i'm not that crazy. ;)) But seriously, they're the bomb.com. They come with delicious corn tortillas, A HUGE piece of crispy white fish, RANCH, cabbage, shredded cheddar cheese, and a lime. The best part is their homemade hot sauce that you can squeeze on top! {similar to sriracha!} I can't wait to visit again the next time that I am in San Diego! I was surprised by the rating Brigantine got on Yelp because I have come to this restaurant often on my visits to Coronado. But cautiously, I did choose to go here for dinner tonight. The food was delicious and the service was impeccable. I have come to know this restaurant. I had the classic Caesar salad and the fish and chips and both certainly exceeded my expectations. The salad was crisp and the fish was crispy and the french fries we're home cut. I do recommend this restaurant and give it a five star rating. read more

Taco Tuesdays here is one of the best in town. Well portioned and the fresh fish and shrimp taco ingredients are my favorites. Tacos are offered with a variety of sauces but you can ask for any of the sauces for any of the tacos. Beer selection is great and wait staff very attentive and friendly. read more

Two years later: four stars saved by our server Carley. The bad: we had reservations for 2. Hostess first tried to seat us in the absolute MOST UNDESIRABLE table, even though the restaurant was only about 50% occupied at the time. Tiny table for two, in the back room against the wall.....we requested another table, and she moved us to a slightly better table, more open, but in the main traffic area. My husband made some comments about the whole process. And then our server, Carley, appeared. She moved us to a nice booth--great view. Carley is why this review is a 4 star instead of a walk away. Service was perfect, not slow or rushed. Martinis were excellent--perfect combination of ingredients, and full glasses. Food was good: calamari appetizer good, but dipping sauce bland. Steaks were good, although my filet was more medium than medium rare as requested. Good value for price. Carley even threw in a creamer brûlée for our anniversary! In short, because our server, Carley, was excellent, we will probably return. read more

Food was right down the middle here. Not great and not bad. Portions are small and I ordered the swordfish was a little bland and could have used a little more excitement. The vegetables served with it were not fresh or they were over cooked so I would recommend another side. My wife ordered the scallops which would have been much better with 4-5 scallops vs just the 3 that is with the dish, which is at I feel a bare minimum of being called a dish. After being in Seattle for the weekend I was craving some seafood. So decided to go here with friends. They said it was one of the best places for sea food. It's a local spot. They have great happy hour specials. I had the Caesar salad with salmon and the salmon was a little fishy but the salad was really good. The Brigantine is a local family-owned chain of 7 restaurants in San Diego County. The Coronado location is perhaps my favorite due to the proximity to the beach and the Hotel Del. The Happy Hour menu (available everyday except Saturday) is excellent value. Menu items I've had at this location include: Grilled House Oysters ($8) - this small ass-kicking appetizer features 3 oysters drenched in melted shallot-shoyu butter covered with chow mein-like wonton strips. Despite the butter, these go down cleaner and with more purpose than traditional New Orleans-style charbroiled/grilled oysters found elsewhere. People love The Brig's fish tacos (deservedly so), but the grilled oysters shouldn't be overlooked. Fish Taco ($3 each during happy hour) - The Brig's gringo-style fish tacos are really damn good. I opted for the grilled pollock, and got a large chunk of perfectly-cooked fresh fish with tomatoes, onions, red cabbage, and mild cheddar cheese in corn tortilla. If you like the tacos at South Beach Grill in OB, you'll also enjoy these, as they're very similar. Clam Chowder ($4.25 per bowl during happy hour) - The Brig unfortunately serves a prime example of what clam chowder shouldn't be: thick and roux-y. Flavor is acceptable, but the texture is wrong for this Massachusetts-raised chowdah-head. Because the soup is over-burdened with flour and butter, the actual clams themselves do not have a discernible voice in this dish. Pescetarians beware: The Brig's clam chowder contains salt pork (though I'd argue that this is one of the things they got right). Calamari Strips ($6.25 during happy hour) - this is another so-so plate. While I liked that these were not traditional calamari rings, I was not a fan of the accompanying ketchup-y cocktail sauce or the disappointingly bland jalapeño cream sauce. Also, the calamari could have been any generic sea-meat. I suppose the mild flavor of calamari is why it is so popular, but here the texture is also lost due to the thickness of the dark cornmeal batter. My recommendation is that you come here for a few bites because you're already in Coronado during happy hour, not because you want the "the best seafood in San Diego," "best fish taco," or other hyperbole that occasionally is associated with this place. I would not recommend this restaurant. My wife and I just got married over the weekend and wanted to spend a quiet Sunday on the island. Saw that this place had decent reviews and thought we'd give it a try. We ordered: - Sashimi appetizer: $14 for thinly sliced seared tuna which wasn't fresh and came with a terrible teriyaki sauce, ginger, wasabi, and 1 pair of chopsticks. It was very difficult getting a server's attention so we just ate it with a fork. - cioppino: very bland. The seafood again is not very fresh for being right on the beach. - Ribeye Steak 14oz: Wasn't bad but wasn't very good. The side of truffle fries was the best thing about this meal. The steak comes with a fat slab of some kind of herb butter on top which sounded appealing at first but I realized it was just too greasy and again the freshness of the meat was an issue for me. I ended up eating only half and taking the rest back to my hotel where I took a bite a few hours later and had to throw it away. I also ordered a scotch and water with no ice. A double in fact. The only thing they really doubled up was the ice. My wife doesn't drink but she decided she'd try a raspberry "cooler" that night. It was very sweet. We paid a little over $90 including tax and a very poor tip. It really should have been closer to $100 but we just couldn't allow ourselves to pay for the poor service. We also waited nearly 30 minutes to be seated and when we finally walked through the dining hall we noticed there were several tables that were open but our hostess walked us all the way to the very back corner of the restaurant which made flagging down a server difficult. This table has a speaker installed right above it and the server kept asking me to repeat what I was saying. I hate pulling out the race card, but it did make my wife and I wonder why the only non-white patrons at this restaurant were seated at possibly the worst table in the place after waiting half an hour even though there were several open tables. Ok, so for my new job I had to drive out to this retirement home on this island called Coronado to give a presentation on plastic dishware. The company was too cheap to fly me so I had to drive like 20 freakin hours. I basically work for a bunch of douches. (Yes, I'm talking about you, Dwayne.) Anyway, I get to the island and I have about 5 hours to kill before I have to do my thing. I'm driving around and I see some hotties outside this place so I pull in. I walk up to the bar and I'm like, "Bro, fix me up." Within 5 minutes I have a tall, frosty mojito sitting in front of me. I'm like, "Seriously?" And he's like, "Very." I make sure none of the hotties are looking and I throw it back. Not bad. Suddenly, this hottie sits down right next to me and I'm like, crap, this chick probably thinks I'm into dudes because I just slammed this mojito. Wrong. She looks at me and is like, "Is that a mojito? I LOVE men that aren't afraid to drink mojitos in public." I stopped by here on a search for fish tacos, at the recommendation of the hotel concierge. Apparently they weren't prepared for the Labor Day weekend because there weren't enough waiters to cover all the tables and not enough cooks to prepare the food fast enough. On top of this, the waiter we had just started earlier in the week. The GF and I both ordered the fish tacos, but were both underwhelmed by it - partially because of the fact that it was deep-fried, not grilled. Also because by the time the food finally did arrive it wasn't very warm. Our waiter tried his best, but also neglected to bring us the bread we requested, until we reminded him the 3rd time.
