There are a few things I can't say about this place, but the things I will say are worth speaking about. After walking all day and up and down Coronado, my son and I wanted to sit down and eat one last meal before traveling home. We walked up and down trying to see which what was appealing and chose this place. I wasn't thinking anything of it, unfortunately this place is all I think about now. My son and I even though we had no reservations were put outside and squeezed in which I was very greatful for and so was our belly's after. We never went in the restaurant so unfortunately I can't say how it goes in there but it looked busy yet well organized. The waiter might have felt rushed but they sure didn't show it, sitting outside looking in we saw a beautiful bar. It's was a gorgeous day as we sat outside and people watched but that's enough of the atmosphere now it's food time. We got a chocolate milk and Diet Coke with a chicken parm which we split, I have been all over the place and this place has their chicken parm down. The chicken was extremely crispy and the breading didn't fall of the chicken when I cut it up for my son chicken was juice and the spaghetti we got with is wasn't a watery mess like plenty of places I have been to. Very odd experience at this "establishment" (I put it in quotes because I'm not entirely convinced this is a real business). Before I start ripping this place I want to preface by saying our server was great and did everything he could, he was failed by the rest of the staff and the restaurant as a whole especially the kitchen. Meal started off alright however our drinks took quite some time come out (around 20 minutes for a margarita, old fashioned, and virgin mule) which already should have been a bad omen. We then ended up waiting 45 minutes for our 1 appreciate to come out which was 3 small meatballs. The meatballs themselves were just alright, and did not warrant the long wait time at all. Very crumbly and did not have much flavor. Red sauce that came on them and the ricotta scoop that came in the plate were good, but if the foundation (meatballs) isn't solid, everything crumbles (literally). Following this we ordered our entrees: rosemary pizza, salmon estivo, pappardelle carbonara. We waited about 30 minutes after which our server came by to tell us we would need to wait another hour to hour and a half for the pizza since their pizza oven was apparently experiencing issues (??). Despite these "issues" we witnessed parties seated both before and after us order and receive pizzas from this seemingly issue-ridden pizza oven. In lieu of the pizza my compadre swapped her order to the chicken piccata, and we dug in for what would end up being a brutal wait time. After another 40 minutes had passed we asked our server about our order after which he went back to the (problematic) kitchen to likely whip them into shape and remind them there are actual paying customers waiting. Finally after another 10 minutes our entrees finally came out. The salmon estivo was great, very simple roasted salmon filet with vegetables and capers. Was this worth the long wait? No absolutely not but it was still tasty and I found no flaws in the dish. The chicken piccata was just alright. The actual chicken filet and lemon sauce was good but the side of fettuccine Alfredo tasted like prego and barilla at best. The carbonara was a genuine abomination. I truly believe if any true Italian had tasted this dish their soul would have left their body. Carbonara is a dish best known for its simplicity, as the quality of the ingredients should speak for themselves. You'll notice if you take a look at the menu that this carbonara has onion as a prominent ingredient, which should immediately raise red flags for any Italian or even any self respecting cook. This carbonara tasted so strongly of onion it was genuinely off putting. The overall flavor of the dish was very odd as well, just did not taste like carbonara should and this kitchen should be ashamed to produce a dish with this name of this poor caliber. Our server tried his best to make up for things by bringing a complimentary glass of red and a glass of white to our table, but by this point the damage was done and there was really no salvaging this meal. Again I should point out that our server was great, he was just failed by the back of house staff and the menu overall. I would highly advise against dining at this establishment, as you would likely have a better experience at Olive Garden. read more

Coronado is a favorite destination of mine and so I'm always looking for new places to dine. My original intended destination last night was Saiko Sushi but when I saw the line I opted for this next door. Tourists speak highly of the place because they are mostly one and done, but I look for places I feel comfortable with and look forward to returning to. It's a cozy little setting with light music playing in the background. I made my way to the bar where there isn't much action.. or life for that matter. There doesn't seem to be a bartender in charge, just a few women who seemingly take turns. My server was apparently new, because when I asked if there were any veggies I could order on the side.. the deer in the headlights kicked in as she didn't know the menu. She eventually said they could 'mix something up' but at that point I was already turned off. I ordered the Wendt Chardonnay, and later when I asked for a second glass I noticed last minute that she just poured any available bottle into my glass. I never mix, but I guess I had to now. As for my entree, I ordered the veal Dijon which was served on a bed of buttered noodles - and no veggies. It was flavorfully cooked in a white wine sauce but the veal was undercooked. And so, unfamiliarity with the menu, mixing different wines into the same glass, and undercooked meal.. needless to say, I'm being generous with a 4-star rating when I'd really prefer to give 3.5. I had to look back at my review of Il Fornaio (3) which is located right around the corner, but I feel this place provides more value for your money. read more

Every time we come here, the staff are incredibly friendly and very attentive, which always makes the experience even better. We ordered our usual dishes this time and everything was just as delicious as always. But for the first time, we decided to try their desserts -- and wow, we're so glad we did! Even if you don't eat here, you absolutely need to try their espresso martini's! I initially was planning to share one with my friend. As soon as we had one, we saw how creamy, strong and delicious it was, we ended up ordering another 2, and the rest of our table ordered some as well. The food was great. I rarely do Italian out and about, but I'm staying on Coronado for my tenth anniversary and my gluten free wife is jonesing for pasta. I yelped and found other places, but my wife was eyeing this spot, and for me to trust her in picking a restaurant, I know it meant a lot to her. She picked a banger. We had a pepperoni pizza, added sausage and olives, linguine creme scampi, and mezzi rigatoni alla vodka. The best part about this place is the fact that they let you choose the sauce/protein and pair it with the pasta of your choice. For that very reason, this might be my new favorite Italian spot... shame I live in Los Angeles. Vodka sauce was one of, if not the best I've ever had... and it wasn't just barely coating the pasta. There was a little extra in the plate to dip the crust of the pizza in. Pasta was al dente. Zero complaints about this dish. It's a ten.... buuuut if I wanted to make it an 11, I'd do some crumbled sausage in the dish over the bacon. That's just me. Crème scampi linguine was excellent. Usually, I'm not picking a scampi because it's just boring, the shrimp is skimpy, and the angel hair is insubstantial, but I know my wife loves scampi, and they had this creme version I had never seen... plus I get to pick linguine instead. Excellent choice. The linguine gave it more substance/body, the shrimp was actually quite generous, and the creme in the sauce also added more umph. The only thing is after some time, toward the end of the dish, the sauce had seemed to have broken and I got that oily scampi type feeling. Pizza was not the best Neapolitan style pie I've ever had, but it was plenty solid. I'd order pizza here again. Love the giant chunks of fresh Parmesan they microplane over your dish for you as well. Staff and service were excellent, friendly and prompt. Next time I'm in Coronado, for Italian, I'm coming back to try the meatballs and some appetizers. Stumbled on this place on accident and the ambience was so warm and inviting that we had to stop in. I made the major mistake of ordering the pizza. Do not order the pizza here. It was so so underbaked (see picture). You could see in the crust that it was underbaked in the middle. The rest of the group ordered pasta which seemed like a better pick. When we got there, we learned it was a $60 fixed menu with about 5 appetizer options, 5 entree options, and 2 dessert options. No where on the website or when my boyfriend called was that mentioned. The food was all delicious, but at 7:30pm they were already out of gnocchi when that was two of the 5 entree options, so we had to get pasta instead. The service was okay. It was very cute inside though. The bill came and they had automatically added a 20% gratuity, which again wasn't mentioned to us by anyone. It ended up being a $250 dinner including drinks, which it was not worth. We chose this place because it looked to be a little more casual, but when they raise prices that much and guarantee each couple spends $150 before drinks(and didn't advertise it at all), it made it not as great of an experience. We came here on a Wednesday night at 6pm in January and were seating quickly. There's a choice of indoor outdoor seating. The decor is fun and the service is excellent! We started with the minestrone soup, and we both thought it was quite good! Don ordered the carbonara; he thought it was good but not his favorite carbonara. He would try something different next time. I ordered the salmon Estivo. It was so delicious and perfectly prepared. I shared some with Don and he agreed it was excellent. We finished with cannoli's. They were ok but we were surprised that the pastry was tough as we had a little trouble cutting through it. I understand their desserts are made in house so it must've just been an off day for this pastry. We look forward to our next visit. read more

We were lucky enough to get the last bottle of moscato, everything about this meal was amazing. My friend loved her shrimp scampi. I love the truffle fries, veal, seabass and dessert. This restaurant is located in a really nice area of Coronado. It's on the main street near other nice restaurants and businesses. The streets are lined with tall palm trees and has a breathtaking view of downtown San Diego. I don't think you can find a better location to eat at. The service here was phenomenal. We came in a group of 14 and we had no problem receiving fast and attentive service. Catherine was a great server who gave us recommendations on what to eat. The bathrooms were VERY clean. So clean that I would honestly eat in there. The bathroom smelled great and had nice paintings. You can always tell the quality of a restaurant by the type of hand soap they use and I can confirm, I would wash my hands here. We had the Penne Pasta a la Vodka with chicken and it was indescribable. I was licking the plate clean to just get a smidge more of the flavor. It was creamy but powerful at the same time. The complimentary bread they give you complimented the sauce well. The bread was like a focaccia, very similar to corn bread. The salad you get for the antipasti had a nice tangy vinaigrette. I also tried the sausage pizza which was surprisingly good. I'm not a big "artisan" pizza fan myself but the dough was perfectly cooked. It had just the right amount of crust burn to make it enjoyable. Hats off to the chefs here. The prices are pretty steep. You will be breaking the piggy bank to eat here. Don't expect to walk out of here for under $65 for a meal for two making this a ($$$$) for me. The flavor more than makes up for the prices so it is worth the trade off. Bottom Line/TLDR: great pasta and even better location. read more

This used to be my favorite Italian restaurant on Coronado. But things have slowly been changing. Happy hour used to be till 6. Now it's 5pm. The appetizers that used to be on happy hour 1/2 off have been cut tremendously. And my favorite polenta... gone! The salmon I used to crave. Now it's boring. Used to be a Mediterranean style. So creamy and fantastic. Now tonight tried the new one... covered in capers and a butter sauce. Tasteless. And served with butternut squash/ tomato/ mushrooms. Used to be tri colored potatoes. No more chicken cacciatore, no Osso bucco. No more Mon/Tues steak specials. And so many other items deleted. The staff and service are still wonderful. Bets tiramisu anywhere. Cute little Italian spot in Coronado! I was out with a group and didn't get to take any pictures, but I really enjoyed the food and experience here. Meatball and bruschetta appetizers were fantastic! Both came with three of each. The complimentary basket of fresh focaccia bread with oil and vinegar was well liked. I ordered the chicken piccata entree and the chicken was very tender and the lemon butter sauce was delicious. It came with a small side of pasta. Portion sizes were reasonable for the price. They do have happy hour until 5pm with half off appetizers so I'd try to go for that! Service was good as well. They have mostly indoor, and some outdoor, seating plus a bar. read more
