Stir fry with prawns
Carole B.

Twas a cold wintry night in Ashland after a long drive up from San Francisco, when we found this cozy yet roomy place tucked away on the second floor. Really thought we were in for a treat. But while the service was impeccable, the chef has some 'splaining to do. Exhibit A: the pork loin special. My mom, and many others no doubt, often said people eat with their eyes. When we feasted ours on this unappetizing pile of monochromatic mush, her words came back to haunt me. There was little flavor or texture variation and the meal came off as institutional. As for Exhibit B, my vegetable stir-fry with added prawns, I can admit I was being a little pollyanna-ish in ordering an Asian inspired dish at a non Asian restaurant. The vegetables seemed to be a mix of fresh and frozen and the flavors needed a boost from the sriracha I requested. Overall a beautiful place to enjoy the Ashland vibes, but I might limit my order to liquid libations the next time around.

We stopped in for some apps before seeing a show, and everything was great! We had the loaded fries and they were very unique and delicious, and the drinks were also all delicious! The server was nice and quick, and everything came out hot and quick. Pricing was a little high, and the restaurant was very busy and loud, but that's to be expected on a weekend! Definitely would go back to try more of the menu!

The best ambiance, very cool vibe and the food was outstanding! My favorite Ashland restaurant. Servers were excellent and very personable.

I love the decor. Theres a level or elegance with rustic charm. I was happy to see plenty of vegan options for me. The server was able to guide me through the menu and here is what i got: - spicy blacken cauliflower appetizers ( delicious) I enjoyed the flavor and the little kick of spice -baked olives - fresh vegetables stir fry W tofu. I was very happy with the flavors and quality of food.

We were just passing through Ashland and decided to give this place a try. Great ambiance in an upstairs restaurant. Beautifully decorated for the holidays. Our server was great, a ton of knowledge on the area and the menu. We ordered way too much food so we could try multiple dishes so walked out stuffed! Everything we tried from the warm olives to the loaded fries to the salad to the steak was delicious. If we ever stop in Ashland again I would love to try it again.

Having just been married, we chose this restaurant for our minimoon because it seemed unique, comfortable and affordable. We were pleasantly surprised by the food, and the service was a perfect mix between attentiveness, respectful privacy, and friendly conversation. We had a wonderful experience, and will definitely return.

The Brickroom is located upstairs in a historical building on Ashland Main Street. Given that the building is considered historical, there are no elevators, which makes it inaccessible to visitors who can't climb stairs. However, once you reach the floor the Brickroom is on, it is well worth the climb. The ambiance is relaxing and the food is very good. I had a Cubano sandwich with fries. The sandwich had the perfect blend of meat, cheese, and spicy mustard. The fries were shoestring and nice and crispy. I also had iced hibiscus tea which paired well with my meal. My waiter made sure I had everything I needed and was friendly without being intrusive. I will definitely return to the Brickroom when I visit Ashland.

Great drinks!

Comfortable relaxed, very casual environment to get a drink in the middle of the day. Kinda of hippie, groovy, bohemian crowd on the day we visited. Food was tasty, definitely created to pair with drinks or a beer. Background music was low and rhythmy. Prices were fair, drinks were really good. Service was a bit slow, but friendly.

As locals, Brickroom is one of our favorite weekend brunch spots. Highly recommend! However, in our social circle, the Brickroom burger is legendary and I finally had my crack at it. The two features of the burger that stood out were the bread and the cheese. The bread was very light and airy. It had a nice carmely flavor, but gave very little resistance, letting you efficiently reach the chuck patty where good stuff is happening. The cheese is the other big factor. The menu says it's served with a "chevre aioli," which I think is fancy-talk for "there's a little goat cheese on it." That's a solid move! Often I find with these thick, non-smashed patties, the seasoning can be lacking because it has a tough time penetrating through the full thickness of the meat. The goat cheese gives it a punch of salty flavor that carries you through the full thickness of the bite. And lastly, the crumbly lettuce along with the creamy "aioli" sauce gives a silent homage to the Big Mac. Similar vibes, but more elevated. The ambience at Brickroom strikes a nice balance. It doesn't try to do too much but also feels higher-end. The service in my experience is mostly hands off, which sometimes feels right when you want to focus on being with friends or just eating. I've always had a good meal here!

I loved how this place is designed and decorated. We came in for lunch on a very hot 100F day and inside it was cool and cosy. the services was friendly, fast and efficient and the food was pretty good too. My wife loved the salad she ordered (forgot what it was unfortunately, but I added a photo). There's also a nice little patio facing away from the main street that looks very nice and quiet, but it was too hot to be outside that day. If I'm in Ashland again, this would be a really good option to come back to.

Definately recommend this place for good food, cool ambiance, and kind, considerate service! All the food was so good and they had great gluten free substitutions as well. Our server, Reed, was very kind and helpful when we ordered and we enjoyed the experience even more with him as our server. We loved it! Would recommend to our friends and would definitely come back!

The service was fantastic! My two servers/bartenders were Javar and Taran! They were super personable, made a fantastic drinks, and had excellent suggestions regarding menu items. I was kind of bummed that one of the drinks that I wanted was out of an ingredient, and the substitute they offered was lovely. In fact, I ordered three.

Do they take reservations?

Thanks for the question. I was not certain myself because they seemed to take reservations but I was told they don't when I called to make one for dinner. When I got to the hostess station they had a book that looked like a reservation list but… Read more

Bar Juillet: Where Perfect Cocktails Meet Perfect Fried Chicken…read more Bar Juillet has quickly become one of our absolute favorite go-to spots in Ashland and Southern Oregon. It all starts with the best fried chicken you'll find anywhere in the region. Hands down. This restaurant and cocktail bar delivers on every front. The cocktails are crafted with real skill and balance, and their wine list is outstanding a thoughtful mix of local favorites and world-renowned producers that shows just how seriously they take their program. I've eaten here multiple times, and one thing you can always count on is consistency. The service is warm and attentive, the food is always executed beautifully, and the atmosphere makes it easy to settle in and enjoy the night. They do get busy on weekends, so reservations are smart, but even if you end up waiting, it's absolutely worth it. And if you can grab a seat at the bar, do it. The bartenders here make it an experience all on its own. Reliable, delicious, and truly one of Ashland's standout spots. Bar Juillet never disappoints.

As a chef at two James Beard-winning restaurants, a server, owner, and consultant, I have dedicated my life to the food industry and the people within it. I'm from Ashland, and I was so happy when places like this started showing up in my hometown. Good food and atmosphere can be so hard to find. Coming home to Ashland can be a true oasis for my family. My wife and I have made it our life's mission to make our daughter feel equal and included. Our daughter was born with a rare condition called AMC and does not have normal function in any of her limbs. She currently spends 3-4 days a week in physical therapy to continue building strength so her body and organs can function properly. We were visiting family at the park and suggested stopping in for a beverage and snacks to escape the heat after a long day. We typically plan everything ahead to ensure wherever we go can accommodate my daughter's wheelchair and needs. When we arrived, we thought, "Wow, perfect, she can wheel right in and up to one of the many open tables." Once we were "greeted" by the host, I realized we were not who she wanted to deal with. Three kids, three adults, a stroller, and a wheelchair. She looked like she wanted nothing to do with us, like we were dirt on her shoe. "No reservation," she said. I replied, "Yeah, so sorry, we figured since it was a Monday night right when you opened, and there were only two two-tops seated, we could probably find somewhere to sit." I reassured her we would not stay long enough to impact reservations at the larger front tables, which usually have reserved markers on them but did not at the time. We could all feel that she didn't want to seat us, and we left despite me practically begging to make something work for us, because I know she could have if she wanted to. Being from the industry, I understand what kids can do to an atmosphere, and I know a lot of restaurant workers don't enjoy dealing with other people's children. But when we went outside and my daughter cried and said, "They didn't want me there" So I loaded my daughter's wheelchair back into the car so I could carry her up the stairs at Brickroom, where one employee was working the entire place and took amazing care of us, I might add. We resorted to a booster seat for my daughter since she couldn't use her wheelchair there. She ended up falling out of the seat and slamming onto the hardwood floor. She cried and was embarrassed. The young man tending bar while also waiting every table rushed over with a bag of ice to comfort her. It was honestly touching how kind he was. When we left Brickroom, we had spent more time there than we originally intended to spend at Bar Juliet. As we walked back by Bar Juliet, we noticed the restaurant was still only about half full, and one of the large front tables had remained open the entire time from around 4:10 until 5:40 when we walked by again. I had to stop and ask the host why she couldn't have seated us considering that table never filled. Her only explanation was, "Our kitchen is slow getting food out." Such an incredibly weak excuse. I hope she understands she was wrong and that she made my daughter feel unwanted simply because accommodating us wasn't convenient for her. I have never left a review in my life, but I was so saddened and disgusted by this experience that I felt I had to.

The service is good, we've been there with our family and with a large group, and they have always been very patient and friendly. Alchemy is in my top 3 favorite places for a dressy dinner when we are visiting Ashland. The only slightly negative thing I have to say is that we were there celebrating a birthday once and at the end of the meal our server brought out a candle on a small, flat ceramic dish. The birthday girl's comment was, "You just spent $300 on dinner and all they brought me for my birthday was a candle?" It seemed a little chintzy since most places will give you an actual dessert, not just a candle, but at least they brought a candle. Other than that tiny little thing, we still love to eat here and will be back when visiting in the future.

The latter changes seasonally--in our case it was a dashi broth with a variety of local mushrooms and vegetables. Both dishes were good, with my steak cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes amazingly creamy without tasting too buttery; the dashi broth was delicious as well. We also split the steak tartare, the house bread, and the chips & dip (seasonal special) as appetizers. With the exception of the chips & dip, the appetizers were good but nothing outstanding. The chips & dip, however, were REALLY GOOD! I did not know you could elevate potato chips like that, but their house-made chips are delicious and I would highly recommend trying them. Both my fiancé and I were not a huge fan of the sauce (just a little too creamy, it's really smooth though so if you like creamy sauces you'll probably enjoy it!), but just eating the plain chips was amazing. They even brought us a second serving of chips for free since we hadn't used all of the dip! We also ordered a pear tart for dessert which I would also recommend getting! Delicious crust and good pear flavor.
