Misnomer alert. If you are called "Brick Oven" it would be nice to have the pizza cooked in a wood fire brick oven with a little blackening on the crust. Our pizza was undercooked and frankly flavorless. I would have been happier with DiGiorno. The cheese and crust were goopy together. The salad bar was fine. And my son liked the pasta bar. I feel like this is one of those places that will only go in Utah, along the lines of Cafe Rio, Tucanos and Los Hermanos. They all have in common that they barely resemble the cuisine of the countries from which they claim origin and they are either all-you-can-eat or large portions with extra cheese. Out the many many years I have been at this restaurant, me and my family has never experienced such horrific service. Food was good as always however our appetizer came out as we were getting our check. There were 6 of us and seated us in a tiny booth, so we asked for a different table for more comfort. Our server, Autumn, did not come to our table until after 20 mins of us being seated and it took me asking 3 different servers to get Autumn to come to our table. We tried to shake off the bad start to the evening however it kept getting worse and worse. She would forget everything we asked for and still forger after we reminded her again. Oh dear, I had really good memories of this place from college and uh....it did not live up to my expectations. The kids meals were so pitiful: skimpy sauce on noodles, and sad school lunch style mandarin oranges. The apple beer lives in my memory as something deeply satisfying and tonight it tasted like dirty gas station Sprite. It was full of high fructose diet sadness. The pizza crust tasted like flour dusted cost-cutting measures. I got the bbq chicken pizza which may have been a gamble-- the prefab bbq sauce was somehow both flavor-boring and way too sweet. Is the emperor wearing clothes? The salad bar has smelly bagged lettuce. The grapes that were beat up and tasted suspiciously old. The bacon on the salad bar was mostly cold chopped fat, was the bacon ever cooked? I couldn't tell if it had. The tomato on my personal pizza had been refrigerated.. real cooks know better and know the difference. I understand that they have to sous chef ingredients but severing diced vegetables from the fridge on a pizza crust has no flavor. My personal pizza had a soggy bottom because the veg was not processed properly. At the very least, throw the veg on a grill with salt to release some of the liquid from the veggies.I couldn't tell if the crust was any good. I hope someone reads this so that you at Brick Oven can do better. read more

I know that Brick Oven has been a staple in Provo for years and years. My wife and I visited it out of nostalgia as we had visited it many years ago and thought we would go back. We remembered it as really good, of course we were in college and didn't have much money, so Brick Oven was more like the expensive restaurant for us. Anyway, we went there with nostalgia on their side. Whoops! We both felt like salad and ordered the heap sampler. It looked to me like it was the pizza version of Brazilian barbeque. Huge amounts of pizza that would be readily available at my every whim. What a concept. Loved the concept. I couldn't wait to raise my green flag to have the pizza just keep coming. The salad bar was fine. After eating salad I was still ready to raise the green flag, but unfortunately there was no green flag to raise. You had to wait for the server to bring the pizza to you. Well... Where were the servers? We are still wondering. After 20 minutes of waiting, we found our hostess and asked her if pizza came with the heaps of pizza or if it was just a salad bar. She apologized and pizza came which was barbeque chicken. Not good. It was dry and had red pizza sauce, not the barbeque sauce I am used to. No worries. 15 minutes later, we repeat asking our hostess and the pizza comes. it is fettucini pizza. Uh.... It does not look edible. Pass... Hard pass. 10 minutes later, we finally get meat pizza (one slice) and pepperoni (one slice). 2 minutes later, our server comes by and asks us if we are ready to go. No. The answer is no. We aren't even through eating three pieces of pizza in an all you can eat pizza situation. One piece was not good (the barbeque) and the other pieces were ok, but not great. Yikes. We specifically ask for more meat lovers pizza and pepperoni. While we wait patiently and I continue to look for an imaginary flag which makes pizza come out continually, we get asked again if we are ready to go. Holy... This is how careless they are about that place that was once thriving but now hanging by the coat tails of nostalgia. They use to pride themselves with quality ingredients, top notch service! It has been the same old trash as it has been after Glee Zumbrenen sold it. On to my experience the waitress was really nice she was really polite and cute, but not really attentive as in refills and coming around with the pizza sampler but I don't pin that on her I have really noticed that is really common there, they don't practice nor were they trained on it. The pizza crust was really doughy and had a rubbery texture to it! That was very unforgiving you need a very good crust to make a very good pizza, the cheese was very dry and was almost on the point of hardening! It was awful and lots of grease dripping from one slice. The sauce was super bland! Lacking in flavor I wanted to give the pasta bar one last try it looked very unappetizing, it probably was sitting in those heated pans for 3 day lol the garlic bread are ok just average The root beer is amazing and the suckers you cant go wrong with those! I have never written a bad review for a restaurant before. I usually think that everyone is just trying their best. Unfortunately, Brick Oven has proven that they do not care at all for food safety. I ordered from their salad bar and got myself a salad with a little bit of everything from the bar. I went back to my seat and as I was eating the salad I noticed something moving by my fork. It was a live moth. When I informed the manager of the issue we told them they needed to change out the whole bar because we did not know where in the bar it came from. As we left the restaurant my friend asked if the bar was changed and was informed that they only changed out the lettuce meaning that it is quite possible that the bar was still contaminated. They also were very rude when we complained and didn't want to give us the money back from the salad bar since we did not want to eat from it anymore. They did ultimately refund that small portion of our meal, but it made me worry about the quality of their pizza preparation as well. Overall I will never eat there again because it makes the TV show Kitchen Nightmares look more like Kitchen Daydreams. read more

This place has gone down hill over the years. My family and I used to come here every Monday night for dinner. Anytime I come here now, it is out of tradition from coming here so often in the past. My most recent stop here reminded me why we stopped that tradition. Just the thought of eating here as frequently as I used to makes me feel sad now. Our big extended family still comes here every now and again, but every time people are displeased with their food. And someone usually leaves feeling a little sick. My grandma, who loves this restaurant by the way, didn't even like her food when we stopped here most recently. When she mentioned to the waiter that her lasagna "tasted like soap," they were very kind and did what they could to fix it. But my grandma had pretty much lost her appetite by that point. One of my best friends waitressed here for a semester while at BYU, and while she loved the environment, they would often work her into the ground and didn't pay well. She left with a bad taste in her mouth. (literally and figuratively) The pizza can be good, but is pretty overpriced. My friend and I ordered a BBQ chicken pizza one time that they put marinara on instead of BBQ sauce. That was gross... Overall, if you haven't tried this place before, I would recommend trying a lot of other better pizza joints, salad bars, and pasta restaurants in the area before I would recommend this place. read more

I keep coming back here with my family for nostalgia's sake (and family tradition) and it seems that lately we've all left disappointed. It used to be so good and so fresh, but now they seem to have to have lost what made them so good in the first place. Their pasta, salad bar and pizza used to be amazing-- but everything just takes kind of bland now. Some of their pizza is still good, but seems overpriced for what you're getting. I love supporting local places, but it's really getting tough justifying coming here. It's too bad because it's in a cool location and I like that it employs so many students (though I've heard whisperings that they're not the best to their employees). As a pasta lover, I always get the Pasta Bar. They have many different noodles, including whole wheat, and an array of sauces. Plus delicious hot garlic bread straight out of the oven. A BYU tradition! It's been around since my parents and a great place for a birthday party! However I'm just not a fan of their pizza or food. Their salad bar is nice, but their pizza is eh. I was young and in love, I thought brick oven was the coolest place, mistaking high prices for good quality. Today... I ordered a pepperoni calzone... so what would you expect me to get? Well olives, mushrooms, peppers, onions, and other undesirables of course. I JUST WANTED PEPPERONI RICOTTA AND CHEESE!! Unfortunately this isn't the first time a grave mistake has been made. I paid... I wept... I left. Never to return. Brick Oven is like hiking the Y. There are lots of other options of hikes and pizza available in the area, yet everyone visiting Provo and all the students feel the urge to go there at least once. Afterwards, you're glad you did it, but realize it's just not quite worth it to make it a regular tradition as opposed to the other local alternatives. You wonder why it's so popular if it's just not quite as enjoyable as others you've experienced. That being said, it IS a fun BYU tradition and there a lot of yummy, more unusual combinations you can order from and they've recently remodeled the building to make it so cute and inviting. Brick oven has been around for years! I grew up coming here for family dinners and having their pizza delivered to my front door. My overall take on Brick Oven is that they are all about quantity over quality, especially since it's conveniently located right by BYU campus. The salad bar is very mediocre -- just the cheapest ingredients you could get away with (iceberg lettuce and mandarin oranges from a can, for example). The pasta bar and soup are average as well. The pizza, garlic bread and root beer are what you want to order. My advice, stick with the classics. Also, stick with ordering delivery or take-out. Although nice, the servers seemed a little young and perhaps a little clueless. Again, quantity over quality. And don't let looks deceive you. The hostess told us we could not be seated until our whole party arrived. They said this was their company policy. Once we were all there we told the hostess. There was 7 of use. They said that would would be seated shortly. There was no one else waiting. We wait for 20 minutes. At 20 a second group came in. They said they had 15 people, but at that moment only 4 people in their party where there. Apparently some one in that group was friends with the some one on staff. They were told that a table had just opened up and they would be seated. Even though their whole group was not there. We went and asked the hostess what had happened and why we had not been seated. The hostess told us that we needed our whole party there. We explained that we were all they and asked why the other party went before us and they couldn't come up with a valid resopnce. And so they apologized and talk to the servers, pushed some table together and got us seated. We then got our waters and sat for another 20 mins. We asked a server who had out table and they shrugged. We had to go ask the hostess again and we found out that no one had been assigned to us. We will not be going back. I would not recommend this place to anyone ever. read more

Sometimes I forget about the little gem tucked away in Provo since I'm not in Provo anymore. Their pizza is good as well as the calzones. But by far my favorite thing is their garlic bread. I came here on a Friday night, and had to wait 15 minutes for a table. I decided to eat from the pasta bar, and must say that there were a lot of options to choose from. You can choose your type of pasta, meat (sausage or meatballs), sauce and garlic bread. The garlic bread tasted so buttery and had a great crisp texture! I thought the variety was great. The only downside is that the portions given each time are quite small. Also, the pricing is relatively more expensive in comparison to other restaurants located in Provo. read more

It was my brothers birthday and we decided to come here. My family goes here a lot. I don't go with them, but they go weekly. There were 8 of us. We all ordered the sampler. $10.99 for all you can eat salad, soup, pizza, and dessert. It's a good deal. I started at the salad bar, picking up some salad, topping it with olives, bacon, ranch and croutons. I grabbed a bowl of clam chowder and made my way back to the table. The salad was okay, nothing special. The soup was good, but the crackers were really, really salty. After finishing up our soup and salad we were all ready for pizza. We waited...and waited...and waited. Service was slow...very slow. Maybe it was because of the location of our table, it was a little secluded, but whatever the reason was, we were all hungry by the time they got around to us. As it's a "sampler", the slices are cut a little small so that you can try everything out. It's a great idea in theory, but in reality with how slow they were to get us the pizza you would finish a slice and wait 5+ minutes for the next little one to come around. The pizza was good, but I've been spoiled with years of choosing between the best pizza places in Salt Lake. I didn't think the pizza here came even close to the great stuff up the road. This is gonna be a mixed review cuz I have pretty mixed feelings about Brick Oven. Pro: The pasta bar. It's honestly really great, they flash heat precooked pasta of your choice and you add whatever sauce(s) or topping(s) you want. It's my usual go to when I come here. Pro: They make the root beer in house and it's... rill dang good y'all. Pro: They deliver. An inexplicable rarity here in Provo. Pro: The cookie Pizza. I mean. It's a pizza made out of cookie, what's not to like. Con: The location. It's right next to BYU so its almost always busy and almost always a huge pain to get to. The building is deceptively large so seating isn't USUALLY an issue but if you're going in the evening when school is in session, plan for a wait. Con: The pizza isn't good you guys. It's just not. The sauce is bad, the crust is almost always overcooked and it's kinda pricey, especially for disappointing pizza. Con: It's fucking freezing in there. Always. Like, shivering, bring a jacket to the meal and don't get ice in your drink COLD. I dont know why, it's baffled me for 15 years.
