I walked past this place years ago and had been wanting to go for a while, but unfortunately when I finally went it didn't meet my expectations. The food was just okay. The pizza was alright but not as good as some of the other options in the area. I will say the bread + butter appetizer was absolutely amazing. It house made focaccia and butter and it is as good as it sounds. Other than that everything was eh. The service was good and attentive. By far best pizza around. This was my second visit and let me say, WOW. The pizzas are truly a work of art. You can tell the products they use are the best quality. We started with the bread sticks and Brussels sprouts. So yummy. We had the meatball and OG Foraged pies. So delicious. Their crust has to be the best around. This area of Montclair is adorable. We chose here because we were meeting friends nearby and this place has gluten free pizza crust. It's so good that even our friends who do eat gluten will choose the gf crust. I had the meatball pizza and it was delicious with the meatball melting in your mouth. A simple cheese pizza is perfect for our group's two toddlers to share. Depending on the time of day you might have to walk a few blocks to find parking. Only downside is due to the size of the place, it's hard to accommodate parties larger than 4. We were a group of 8 but we made do by sitting at two tables right next to each other. Would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting pizza in the area. read more

It's been a little while since I last came here. The food has not changed. I ordered their special pie of bacon & brie. When I went in to order, I asked for the specials and the hostess showed my the other side of the menu which had the specials. She asked takeout but I said I wanted to sit outside. She brought me the pizza in a box but brought me a ceramic plate, silverware and a glass and bottle of water. The ambiance is quaint inside and they have outside dining. The pizza was very good and made fast. It was actually a bit too sweet for me. It must e been the apple mostarda. The carmelized onions were sweet too. I like to try the specials and always different things. Everything was very fresh and I will be back but would not order this pie again. I do recommend this place. read more

My chum and I staggered in here for lunch this past Saturday on one of the uglier, rainy days in recent memory. Attending estate sales can really whip up the appetite, as can frantically searching for a parking spot on Walnut Street when it's pouring and you don't have an umbrella. Anyway. The restaurant itself is very cavernous, which is not a term I use too often to describe business interiors. I feel like most of the time restaurants try to shove as many tables into their space as they possibly can, but this is almost the exact opposite situation. Definitely not a bad thing; it just took a little getting used to. From my vantage point it looked like they had another larger room off to the side for dining patrons so good for them in having the square acreage and just letting it be. As an aside, the hipster music was abundant - we recognized the falsetto voice from Justin Vernon of Bon Iver immediately. If you're not into that type of indie/folk rock, you've been warned. I ordered a margherita pie, and my chum got the pepperoni (along with a gynormous Caesar salad). We also swapped slices as a gesture of good will. I liked mine better, but her pepperonis were very tasty - they had a nice crisp, almost burnt/smoked quality to them that I liked. We were both solid fans but I thought the crust was a little too dominant; it almost went up to the halfway point of the slice. I had a very similar problem recently at Ava's in Kenilworth. It's good crust/dough to be sure, but I think the toppings should go further down toward the end of the slice. It was also a little overdone - this type of Neapolitan goodness should be on the crispier side on the edges in my opinion, but there were several bites that were completely charred (my chum agreed, and it was her only complaint). That being said, the cheese and sauce were very, very good. All the more reason to spread the love around the entire pie. The service was pretty good. I don't recall impatiently waiting for anything, and we never ran out of water. The only mild issue I had was that the menu price for the margherita was $17 (and the waitress announced that price before giving me my portion of the bill) and I was charged $18. Not a huge deal and I didn't mention it at the time, but that was either an error on her part, or an unmentioned upcharge for credit card usage. Just keep it in mind and look at your bill carefully. At $17 or $18, I think that's pretty on par for the area. You're basically paying an extra few dollars to eat in Montclair, which has always been the case. I'd definitely come back. There are other equivalent options in the area for the same type of pizza but I really liked the atmosphere and spaciousness of this place. I'm neutral on Bon Iver. read more

So good and highly recommend! Almost perfect but just a couple minor improvements needed, in my opinion. The 5 cheese pizza is served on white sauce but the cheese wasn't salty and the sauce had no flavor. But we added fennel sausage and the cook and thinness of the pizza is perfect so that helped and I give it a 5. 4/5 The meatballs are super soft and tasty. Comes in plenty of marinara for you dip your pizza in (in our case, it was perfect for the pizza that we ordered)! 5/5 The kale apple salad was delicious! Not overpowered by the goat cheese, apples were sweet, the kale are the small baby size so not too bitter, the hazelnuts were toasted perfectly. 5/5 The service was excellent, our server Mike was super attentive and on top of refilling our water and checked on us throughout our meal but not overbearing. 5/5 The prices are a little high but the quality is there so I'd definitely come back! 4/5 read more

I used to come here often but they stopped selling pizza by the slice and it took a while to get over that disappointment. The arugula artichoke salad was very tasty but insanely overpriced. $15 for side salad portion. Also there were like 20 artichokes and not enough arugula to have some with each bite of artichoke. We were excited to try based on the star rating reviews but it was a horrible experience. 1) Garlic knots: garlic knots are actually not knots rather just rolls. During covid, they stationed a bunch of it on a cake stand covered with plastic wrap right at the cash register area. When it was served they were not warm for some reason. The dough itself is very chewy. The marinara sauce had a nice taste, a bit tangy. 2) Margherita personal pie pizza: We asked for vegetarian pizza, and woman at cash register said this is it, and rest are side orders, and that in terms of vegetarians this is popular dish. We ordered and asked for it to be crispy, or as the man who was getting ready to fire up the dough corrected us "well done". Fine Well, apparently these terms aren't synonymous because when our pizza came, it was anything but crispy dough. It plated on a pizza stand with metal plate, but weirdly enough their pizza plate doesn't have aeration holes under, so the plate conducted heat that was trapped under the pizza which caused condensation and making our pizza wet and soggy. It didn't help that the pizza thickness is thinner than a thickness of a cardboard box. Because of this, when you pickup the pizza it is limps downward. The only thing we'll done about it was the burnt outer crust. It was a waste of $20. We also asked for extra red sauce on side for dipping. The seating inside also was terrible. They placed a large table in the middle, and rest 2 seater tables were placed next to washroom, or in front of the window. Their umbrella protector outside only would help for protecting outside seating from rain, but it doesn't help the blazing sun beams shining inside. I say this without exaggerating, I had to sit at the right position so my partner won't be blinded by the sun as he was eating or talking to me. I having skin health issues was also concerned with the blazing sun, but the best I was able to do was be the one to sit on the window side to face my back towards it. But that sun was so blinding and it was so uncomfortable sitting there. We looked at the meat pizza slices that others ate, and it seems their breading was different thickness, and held better. Unsure why that was. Unrelated, there was an area next to us that was divided by a bookcase. We heard someone sneezing few times back there. We weren't feeling too well later after dining in here. read more

Well, this is a great little spot. The decor is a little drab but let's be honest, we are in this for the food! We agreed to order food from here since one of the group members wanted to try it. The reviews were good so I was excited to pop in. We LOVED the pizza. Service was quick and I appreciate the two areas to serve and cook. There was a negative review about the garlic knots so I had to try them for myself and they were DELICIOUS! I asked if they warmed them and she said yes. I cannot wait to go back. Awesome that there is gluten free pizza by the slice. A lot of pizzerias will typically make you purchase and entire gf pie which can be an overkill if you want a quick snack, so I'm very pleased that's not the case here. Great slices, great flavor, and LOVE the cheese edges along the crust for an extra chew. Delicious. The only downside, and this can just be a personal preference, is the bread to topping ratio. It feels like it's 90% bread and 10% topping. The bread is good though, it tastes like the real thing, I just wish there was a little more topping to go around. I'm not gluten free but mi'lady is. I usually try gf options to compare them to the "real thing". I can say the gf pizza here is pretty darn good. We'll be back. read more

Heard that they had a gluten free pizza. Great, it's hard to find a tasty one. Called and ordered for pick up. Went to pay and IT COSTS $27!!! It was already made for me and I haven't had pre-made pizza in forever and I bought it. But I will not order it again. Crazy expensive. Now for a critique of the actual pizza: I love a deep dish Sicilian slice and was ecstatic to get to eat this (I became gluten free about 12 years ago so it's been a while!) They succeeded in making the unique crust as it indeed an airy, fluffy deep dish style. I thought there was way too little sauce. The cheese they used was too salty and tangy (not sure of the word but it was a sharp cheese vs a mozzarella). The edges were overcooked in way to make the edge cheese hard and crunchy (not a bad thing per se, just wish it wasn't so salty). Last thing I didn't like: it was very greasy. Not your traditional drip-off-the-slice-orange grease, but I had to keep wiping my hands and wash them with soap and water before I could touch anything. My water glass was all greasy. The bottom of the box was soaked I enjoyed the time spent with my slices but I can not justify the cost and ever buy it again. read more

Really enjoy the pizza here! My top choices are margarita, buffalo chicken, and the meatball pies. Was not a huge fan of chicken park but it wasn't too bad either. Suddenly among my favorite new pizza places in New Jersey. The dough is tremendous. Definitely the best part about the entire pie. Really disappointed from the outset 1. Most of the staff was not wearing a mask 2. There was no real signage to identify each type of pizza slice available, so we had to ask. The display counter glass is nearly soundproof so they had to come around the counter to point and explain each slice to each customer. Massless. It really slowed the line 3. Lots of GF options, but mixing it in with everything else kind of defeats the purpose I gave 2 stars because the staff was friendly and my slice of wood fired forager's feast was a very good flavor combo. That said, the proportions of toppings was off making it much too cheese heavy. Additionally, my wife's Sicilian slice was a goopy mess without an original sauce to save it. From the bakery, recommend the: - pistachio babka: full of layers of pistachios and white chocolate - chocolate croissant: great lamination - cheese danish We also tried two pizzas from the wood-fired oven. The bread is phenomal - almost like a chewy sourdough to me. Their pizzas are individual-size and have a very full crust. I loved the tomato sauce on the margherita - it tasted fresh. Wish it had a few more basil leaves - seemed to only be on half the pie. The Buff Chick was packed with flavor. Recommend following them on Instagram as they roll out specials all the time - both on the bakery and pizza side. Right now I think they only offer pick up in store. Dude this place is a hit, no doubt! Our host, Mike, took such great care of us, our meal, and the experience over all! And that's just the icing! The restaurant has ample seating and great for families, dates, or even a casual Tuesday. The homemade bread and butter is out of this world! The pies are perfectly cooked Neapolitan-ish pies with fresh ingredients. To top it off despite stellar food and service their prices are quite reasonable. They rightfully know how to make the dough! I've been waiting for this Yelp page to appear so I can rave about Brick+Dough! Luisa recently expanded/rebranded as a partnership with Chef Meny (of Mishmish & Marcel & Luisa) and Jason Rosenthal, who previously owned Brick + Dough in Union City. There's no shortage of great pizza joints in Montclair, including a few incredible wood fire places specifically. But Brick + Dough is something truly special. Every single pizza I've had (and there have been many ) has been uniquely & wildly delicious, with a crust as perfect as any you'd find in Italy. The sesame & stracciatella especially is one of the best things I've ever eaten. I crave it daily. On the restaurant's Instagram, Jason often shares the process of sourcing the unique ingredients he uses, like plum soaked sesame seeds and yuzu oil, showing his support for other small businesses and appreciation for different cuisines. The flavor combinations used are out of this world, perfectly balanced to the point that you can't even tell what you're tasting but you know it's flawless. I can't say enough good things. I highly recommend following them on Instagram since they give sneak previews of special pies and the heads up when online advanced ordering is available, something you should take advantage of since they often sell out! Opening a new business during a pandemic is bold, but I can't imagine this place not surviving for the long haul. Also, on the bakery side they still offer most or all of Luisa's old offerings, and then some! I haven't had much from the bakery, but from what I can tell, it's all just as delicious as the pizza. I just happened to find this place by googling pizza places in Montclair. Came in and ordered the pepperoni and the buffalo chicken pizza. Both were amazing. Zero complaints regarding pizza or service. Since my visit I've ordered twice for takeout. Pizza is consistently good. I need to try their deep dish pizza next.
